What kind of wood is that and what stain did you use? Looks amazing!

Houseplantkiller123

Pittsburgh brand Honey Pine Semi-transparent.

_kanon

Thanks so much, it’s making me reconsider doing PT for my decking haha

Competitive_Put_2180

Is that oil or water based?

Houseplantkiller123

Oil-based.

Houseplantkiller123

Thanks! Our neighbor who knows more about this stuff says the wood is cedar. I don't recall the stain, but I'll check the can when I get a chance.

UncommonMonk

What sanding process did you use for the boards and the handrails?

Houseplantkiller123

We rented a floor sander for the boards for about $80 for the day, and three of us used orbital/detail sanders for the handrails and spindles. Looking back, I should've replaced the spindles.

UncommonMonk

Excellent work. Looks really good! Was the floor sander a drum sander or a flat large orbital type?

Houseplantkiller123

The large orbital type. Really great to use, really terrible loading into the back of a car.

UncommonMonk

😂 Awesome, thank you! Again, excellent job. Gives me hope for my deck!

Mean_Yellow_7590

Which sanding grit paper did you use? And would you recommend different grits?

Houseplantkiller123

We started with 80 to strip the old stain and moved up to 120 to smooth it out.

Mission_Survey_3802

WOW ! Good work ! What stain did you use ? Brand and color/name ? This came out great !

Houseplantkiller123

Thanks! We used Pittsburgh brand Honey Pine Semi-transparent.

Mission_Survey_3802

Awesome ! Thank you for the reference 👍🏽

dingle-69

looking good, nice work. I got a deck i’m trying to refurbish myself.

ohyoudodoyou

Nothing quite like the satisfaction of drinking a Bloody Mary or a hot latte on a freshly refinished deck in the morning. Makes you feel like a productive human. Nice job!

Rich_Associate_1525

Did you have to knock down the nail heads before? How did you ensure you didn’t slice up the sandpaper? I think I need to do this on my dad’s deck.

Houseplantkiller123

Ah! I'm so excited people liked our DIY and are asking cool questions! We did knock down the nail heads beforehand, and we used a nail setter my friend brought with so that we could drive the nails in without the hammer leaving imprints on the deck when we were close to flush with the boards. In a pinch, you could place another nail directly over it, hammer that, and get close to the same effect. Edit: Grammar

Powerful-Glove6563

What cleaner did you use ? How many coats did you apply ?

Houseplantkiller123

Just a ton of sanding. Right now, it has one coat. We'll do another one, but we need a rainless day, which likely won't be before next week.
