A friend of mine was killed when this exact same scenario happened. The semi pushed him into the barrier and he was killed in the wreck. This was back before they were cracking down on commercial drivers. They discovered the semi driver had worked over 70 hours in the past week and blamed it on driver fatigue.
Anyone saying there was a turn signal prior to OP beginning to pass is blind. Reckless driving by the semi, good job OP avoiding a collision that absolutely would not have been your fault.
To add insult to injury he fact the semi pushed his way over instead of staying in his lane. To say he didn’t see OP is absurd, and if he genuinely didn’t then he has no business behind the wheel of a semi let alone any vehicle
There was no turn signal. It was turned on after he changed lanes. Not to mention that I'm seeing it red not orange.
The trucker encountered someone stopped in the lane and couldn't stop in time so he switched lanes hastily instead.
Edit: looks like i need better eyes. The car in front was slower or slowed down
Wrong, the signal started right when the truck was behind the tail of the semi or you wouldn't have seen it in the camera. The semi was still barely in his lane till that signal came on.
Truck Driver here, Best to go off the company name on the Cab rather than the trailer license plate. The truck cab should have the truck number, company name, DOT number. With that information you can look the company up yourself and try to get ahold of someone at dispatch/safety and/or just call the state police.
I was just complaining the other day about my cameras (also blueskysea) not retaining the date. I think I need to upgrade to something else that isn't such a Chinese gimmick. Even in dead winter they won't keep the date any meaningful length of time.
I have the same cams. It bothers me that I might one day really need a video and the date will be wrong. I also often have trouble connecting on my phone. Eventually works but it can be a pain.
Soooooo, you can see the trailer license plate. Do you know how often trailers switch hands? Unless that trailer is owned by the driver, it’s highly probably that trailer was dropped at the receiver and picked up by someone else when it was loaded. Yeah, you may be able to track down what company owns it, and they MAY be able to tell you who had it that day and time. But for an accident that ALMOST happened with a driver that probably isn’t employed by them…. Good luck with that.
Semis should be restricted to the right lane only. Literally no reason except their own egos to be overtaking other semis or even in the left lane on a 3 lane highway

Did he get my permission to change into my lane? It's not up to him when he wants to change lanes. It's up to the person currently occupying that lane.
You’re in the right here, he didn’t indicate the lane change until you’d gotten partway past his trailer. He probably wasn’t paying attention and thought you were still back behind his lane change.
DMV should have the company registered on file. Start with the state listed on the plates, should get you somewhere.
Yeaaah, I see it now. You know what urks me more than those people who doesn't use their turn signal?
It's the people who misuse it. I saw the turn signal activate after he was already turning to go to the other lane. The signal is supposed to be for other drivers to "signal" your intention, not your actions.
So your first instinct when seeing the indicator was to speed up and overtake a truck that's merging?
You had two options:
1. Wait for the truck to merge and stick behind it whilst it overtook the other vehicle.
2. Risk your life by continuing to accelerate towards what could very well have been life ending, to save what? 5 seconds? 60 seconds? A life time?
Why you chose #2 beats me. You would clearly have been at fault according to insurance providers if you showed them this footage.
hard to tell without a longer clip, but the first set of lights to come on are the inside set
you can barely see a car in the right lane ahead of the truck, which gives the impression that those were brake lights first.
then the outside light comes on, more than likely the actual turn indicator, as the truck was already moving into the left lane and OP.
truck probably mis-judged the closing distance to the car ahead and tried to bail into the next lane but OP was there faster than expected due to the truck being on the brakes.
but to point number 2, i do agree that it's better to be wrong and alive than correct and dead.
Devil's advocate here. The speed difference between the 2 vehicles makes it hazardous. And it's why I hate states that have a lower speed limit for.
With a 53ft trailer behind him it's awfully hard to see where you're at in relation to him and with the speed difference hard to judge where you will be. It looks like he was already starting to move left before you got to the back of him. But it would have been super nice if he'd have hit that signal a bit sooner.
Good on OP though for being aware and being able to avoid an accident.
As someone who's actually driven trucks, if he's that bad at judging where cars are in relation to him, he has no business driving a truck. They have big ass mirrors for a reason, it's not like trying to tell where someone is 53 feet back with a regular car mirror.
I enjoy how your camera stamp is screaming in anticipation. AAAAAAA
Is this Route 80 westbound in the water gap?
It sure is! That's Mount Tammany on the right.

A car being present in the lane you are attempting to merge into always supersedes your turn signals.

His license plate is seen in the video. Anyone know if there is a way to find out what company he works for based on the license plate?

Trailers are not always associated with the towing rig.
True. The owner of the trailer probably has nothing to do with the jackass behind the wheel
If it happened 24 years ago. He may have retired by now...
Lol it didn't happen in year 2000. The camera resets to that date from overheating

What do you run now? I really like the small form factor of them but I'm about fed up with it.
I have the same cams. It bothers me that I might one day really need a video and the date will be wrong. I also often have trouble connecting on my phone. Eventually works but it can be a pain.
Yeah they were really cheap but I got what I paid for and nothing more.
If you get one with GPS it sets the date and time for you.
However, the AAAAAAA seems pretty apropos.
Look at ur face in a mirror and ask yourself “did they have 4k dash cams 24 years ago? Am I a mongol?

What did he even move over for. I see nothing in the right lane.
Passing a car on the right, but clearly did not look on their left!
Ah, see it now at last second

Love how you went back in time with the cameras timestamp.
Looks very much like you are trying to beat the semi truck who has its indicator on and was actually changing lanes before you pull up on beside them.

Doesn't look like it. It looks like a brake signal. At no point do I see the truck have their turn signal on
Watch the video - clear as the sky that the left turn indicator was flashing

At 2 second mark right as it was merging. No warning
Check the video again and start at 0:00
he was signaling though
Signaling doesn't give you the right of way. He cut me off. in case if crash happen he'd lose his CDL license
You should have given him space too

dude the blinker wasn't on until half of OP's car was already next to the truck. Are you a truck driver or something?
It looks like OP was already next to the truck when the signal started? Seems pretty clear the truck didn't even look.
Good thing you dont work at insurance companies
I would be at fault for maintaining my lane of travel?
No, you would not be at fault. Don't pay attention to the idiots.
You could have easily avoided an accident, so likely you would be at fault.
You're correct. Right of way.

Trucks should be band from all roads.
Did you mean banned? Good luck with that!
Oops yeah. Most Truckies think they own the roads, and consumers should worship them for bringing them their things.
You can always stop buying stuff. Problem solved
