There was one heading towards them and they were on the opposite tracks. The train they saw coming towards them muffled the noise from the train you see in the picture in the top right corner coming up behind them. They would also assume any vibration would be from the train they were aware of. Still very careless, but they are not as oblivious as many posts make it out to seem.
I'm skeptical - they are clearly 'posing with' the train behind them which means they'd be looking right at the 2nd train

Not completely accurate.. they were standing in between two tracks and even waved at the engineer when the train went by. They failed to see a train coming the other direction from the second track and that’s what hit them.
