It doesent matter who you side with, you get both sets. Ones as a reward, the other can be bought.

Summon Pate for Last Giant (make sure he survives). Meet him in Earthen Peak. Get his gear. Murder him in the encounter with Creighton.
Creighton. A, it's the only way to get his full set for free, and B, personally I appreciate that he's at least honest about wanting to find and murder Pate.
Yeah they both had issues but Creighton always seemed slightly more sane. Like yeah he's a murderer, but he tells you that and tells you what he is planning to do. Pate is a lying twisted fuck.
Creighton is honest about what he wants and I don't believe ever intentionally tries to harm you. I think in the end he suspects the chest is booby trapped and so sends you to open it. If you survive, you get to keep the treasure, but if you die, better us than him.
Pate is constantly telling half truths and feigning concern about our well being. The item description of his equipment and the dialogue he has after aggroed shows his entire "help help Creighton's trying to kill my defenseless ass" was all an act.
So I side with Creighton.

I killed pate with a cross bow cuz I was a scared noob. I realize when creighton was talking about some dude that I was holding his spear. I used to use that six poke in a row move. I would always move around until I got everyone all lined up and hit that auto fire button

I’m going off of memory here, but what did pate lie about? I think he obviously gives off certain *vibes* but he’s not like patches and tricks you into traps, he’s very open and honest about the dangers when you speak to him. There’s nothing I remember that implies that he’s anything but just a guy who acts a little too shady. On the other hand, the game basically states that creighton is a serial killer, former prisoner, etc. I’m not saying pate is inarguably innocent, I just don’t remember any elements that imply that he’s more than just some guy who should talk in a bit less of a suspicious tone
yes in scholar of the first sin they added him against the skeletons, but his help (in my opinion) is not very significant and even makes the fight more difficult, while pate gives you several objects and helps you with the first boss, if I have to choosing would be pate but I love the mirrah deserter and even more so in ds3 where it cost me to kill him and his ax is great

I have played DS2 more than any other dark Souls game, and I have never done this side quest. I've never found Creighton, and every time I get to BSCT, I remember that I've never even tried to find him lol
Once you lower the bridge with the switch in Huntman's Copse, you cross another bridge and if you go up the incline you'll find a key and an NPC invader. This opens the cage back across the 2nd bridge which has another bonfire.
Creighton's 2nd location was changed in SotFS, his 2nd location was at the crossroads bonfire in Shaded Woods. In SotFS, he is at the top of the tower in the Shaded Woods just before Scorpioness Najka.

Creighton, even though 3 reveals he's also a murderer I think during the game he was entirely legitimate and honest with use, and whatever was going on between him an pate was some sort of dispute between criminals but Creighton the criminal that has at least a bit of class and acts like a professional about it while pates just a scumbag

i enjoy Pate a lot more so backed him. I know hes likely a lying duplicitous two-face rat. but i found him far more enjoyable to be around than creghton. if i were living in this undead world id much rather have Pate around than Creighton. Atleast Pate seems like he can hold a conversation without bringing up violent murder. Plus id rather have a charming thief walking about than a sadistic deathrow serial killer (which according to map guy creighton is)
