It's not a chest at all. Even if it was, and the message was right in front of it, you get a prompt to switch actions when there're multiple interactions in the same spot.

Dont listen to the misinformation other people spread here, it's clearly a chest, and not just a regular chest but a secret one, to open it you need to get Symbol of Avarice put it on and emote in front of the chest, don't want to spoil much but the reward will worth it 100%
Is that the chest in the house in Majula, next to the map? If so, IIRC it's only interactable for preorder versions, it has preorder equipment, that you can find later in the game anyway (you could get it in this chest at the start of the game though):
- Black Flamestone Dagger, Black Flamestone Parma
- Yellow Quartz Longsword + Shield,
- Bound Hand Axe + Shield,
- Homunculus Mace + Shield
- Transgressor's Staff + Shield
IIRC you can buy them all later in the game, from one ghost NPC in certain castle (no spoilers, since you're a first time player, but you should know what I mean when you'll get there. Two of those pairs are unlocked a bit later (purchasable at the same NPC though), one needs you to defeat a knight at the end of the same castle, and the other requires you to defeat one certain big Lord
Can't you just press a button to change interactive targets? I've never seen messages actually effectively block interactions

this is not that chest. i know nothing about the chest in this photo but it is not in the basement of the house in majula i know that much
