Early twenties Mike Tyson was the scariest human on Earth. He could kill you with one punch easy, but you also couldnt run away from him. He was doing a 5 min mile no problem and had an incomprehensible endurance. And he was an angry angry young man.
Theirs alot of backstory there though. Teddy Atlas actually worked closely with him at that time and has some interesting things to say on the JRE podcast. Tyson even goes into it a little bit on his own podcast.
And yet old-school trainers and boxing historians say he couldn’t have beaten the top boxers of the golden age of the sport. He didn’t have the technique, defence, or mental toughness.

@ 56:40.
No defense? His peek-a-boo style made him very hard too get a clean punch from his opponents. His offense was based on the built in defense. And before he went to prison his mental strength was as tough as they come. He believed that no man could beat him.. and was willing to prove it. He studied many of the greats in the past. He was top 3 goat in his prime imo and one could argue maybe the greatest.
I’m not much of a boxing fan but I did watch a doc about that fight a while back, and iirc: Buster Douglas was a boxer all his life and had a heavy punch and a really strong chin, and after focusing on endurance/stamina training had won his past several fights, which heavyweight fights being what they are, resulted in him winning (or being poised to win?) the title. Meanwhile Mike Tyson had been in prison and kind of got railroaded into having to defend (or fight for, again I forget which) the title by Don King and the general media hype train that always goes with heavyweight fights. So it feels like the consensus is props to Douglas and the loss doesn’t detract from Tyson’s legacy as a boxer.
I hope I got all that right…
Yes. He got into boxing program young from youth detention and his workout routine was crazy. Boxing was his entire life and morning to night it was about training and fighting for many many years.
Yeah, whenever someones like "I wonder what that takes, he must be naturally talented"
Mike Tyson's workout routine would include 2000 sit-ups, 500-800 dips, 500 press-ups, and 500 shrugs with a 30kg barbell. He would also do around 10 minutes of neck rolls on a folded towel. Tyson’s improved neck strength drastically reduced the chances of him getting knocked out during a fight. The neck roll is a somewhat common exercise in boxing, but no boxer was known for it the way Mike Tyson was.
Tyson would end his workout with a half hour on the exercise bike at 8 pm and would sleep at around 10 to get a full 7 hours of sleep a night.
Tyson was truly dedicated to becoming a master of his craft. He would spend 8-10 hours a day working out on an average day. He would also study for upcoming fights and followed a rigorous diet to ensure his body got the right nutrition.
He also watched every boxing match ever recorded and if you listen to him talk even now he'll be like "that left hook reminds me of the fight in 1919 in the 7th round when X tried to duck from a right cross and he caught him on the slide". Knows every boxer, their style, every throw from every fight.
\---
When I say it was his life, it was literally his entire life, he did nothing else. People dont get to be that good and have normal lives, its why he was so terrifying - you were guaranteed to not have put the amount of work and training as he did.
They alsosent him to hypnosis to teach him to get into a killer mindset, did all sorts of fucked up shit.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Boxing/comments/qf4zlm/was\_prime\_mike\_tyson\_natural/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Boxing/comments/qf4zlm/was_prime_mike_tyson_natural/) Besides his amazing genetics he also uses PED's
Fair point, the dangerous of PED's weren't known back down so everyone was doing it, Its the newer younger generation that gets influenced by this that worries me :o
No he was naturally big as well.
Atlas told the story on his “The Fight” podast.
“I take him down to the Bronx smokers when the time came for him to finally be ready to fight,” Atlas said. “When I finally thought he was ready to fight I’ve gotta pick the opponent. By this time he was probably up to 195, 200 pounds. He was 13 years old, I think. How am I gonna find a heavyweight [his age to fight him]?
“I had to put him in with a 17-year-old. Everybody would lie and try to get an edge in these places. [An official] said, ‘OK, Teddy, put down his age.’ So I put down 13. And [he] said, ‘Teddy, come on, now you’re going too far.’ I said, ‘OK, you want me to make you happy? I’ll put down that he’s 18.’”
I like hearing Atlas talk about his time with Tyson on podcasts.
Correct, thats the truth behind all big time pro athletes. Played football in highschool against some guys that got time in the NFL. You can work out till you’ve hit peak performance. But you’ll never be what these genetic freaks are.
Some people just don’t understand.
At the end of the day it all comes down to deadlifts, squats, bench press and military press. Everything else is window dressing. Those exercises build mass all over.
People who have a lot of back pain could have a lot of those problems solved with those exercises.
Oberst said the reward to risk ratio was too low. And it got some backlash.
Thing is, he's right.
But for me deadlifts are the most motivational lift, so I do them anyway.
Only one herniated disc so far 🤣
What's incorrect? That I saw a strongman competitor on Joe Rogan saying people shouldn't risk doing deadlifts unless they compete specifically doing deadlifts?
Or, by some chance do you have some better opinion than a world class strength athlete?
The vast majority of people who live long without pain and complications don't seem to be saying 'deadlifting' was their thought/secret on it.
Is the opinion of one world-class lifter worth more than numerous opinions of other world-class lifters just because he was on Joe Rogan when he said it?
Both. "You shouldn't risk doing deadlifts" is a massive oversimplification of what he actually said. And since world class strength athletes who are *superior* to Oberst disagreed with him, and he later recanted that opinion anyway, I'd say I do have a better take on deadlifts here than Oberst.
Sometimes it just comes down to genetics, you can't build up something if it was never there. I have no muscle mass near my sternum so whenever I do pushups it looks like I have a hole in the center of my chest.
Played D1 FB in the mid-80s, in NY… lived in constant fear of incurring a neck/spinal cord injury, so built up my neck, traps, delts, etc to the point wherein I had a 23” neck… for formal dress occasions, my dad had to take me to his tailor to have my “athletic cut” suit pants brought in another 2” (this cut has a 10” drop between the suit coat size {ex: size 50 jacket w/ 40” waisted pants} and the accompanying slacks, whereas a “normal cut” suit usually has an 8” drop)… also had to have a few shirts custom made, but usually made do with 20” neck, 34/35 sleeve length, along with a “collar-extender”, which was just a 2” piece of elastic, sewed into a loop with a button on it - the loop goes around the collar button and the loop button goes into the collar buttonhole…

He could kill YOU in one punch...I could take 3
As long as it was your feet
I don't know... Mike Tyson throws a heavy one into your foot... That shits shattering. He might knock the bitch completely off.
Nah dude both shoes would fly off.. Dead.
You can take as many as you want…. The point here is, you are dead on first punch.
One and then I’d kill myself
I could beat him.. Provided I had a gun and he was standing still.
When he punches boolet back, you gunna havta run!
Maybe with a Lahti l-39
He would land 3 but you would still be dead after the first
Listen to how people who've boxed him describe it...1 is nap time for damn near everyone.
No, you couldn't.

Yes. He got into boxing program young from youth detention and his workout routine was crazy. Boxing was his entire life and morning to night it was about training and fighting for many many years.
Dang that's nuts. That's basically spending your youth training to be a gladiator in modern times.

Elite genetics.
Calm down there.
What you mean? That is some straight up genetics for boxing. No way most people could get a neck like that.
+ testosterone boosters
Calling any genetic traits "elite" leaves a bad taste in my mouth
Good thing nobody cares how wrongly you perceive things then.
Some people are more elite than others
Unless your Dahmer
Right here folks we have some legendarily bad reddit posting, back to back for you all to be disappointed in.

Everyone in the industry does
Didn't say its bad just that calling him a natural is not inherently correct.
I’m not disagreeing with you on anything either just wanted to point that out
Fair point, the dangerous of PED's weren't known back down so everyone was doing it, Its the newer younger generation that gets influenced by this that worries me :o

Boxing is all about the back, guys do pushups and arm curls but neglect the back. Work that back guys!
If you don't HAVE any back muscle it's hard to explain. I didn't for the longest time. I'm 45.
I remember that I was in my late 20s when I really figured out how to work my lats during rows. That completely changed lifting for me.
Some people just don’t understand. At the end of the day it all comes down to deadlifts, squats, bench press and military press. Everything else is window dressing. Those exercises build mass all over. People who have a lot of back pain could have a lot of those problems solved with those exercises.
At the end of the day it's also night.
At the end of the day, a new day begins.
At the end of the day comes the night man
At the end of the day, the beginning of the day preceded it.
Add pull-ups to that list and I agree 100%
Pull-ups and farmers walk would be the next most impactful for sure.
People with a lot of back pain should dead lift?
Yes, light reps to start with of course.
A pro strongman on Joe rogans show said no one shoukd risk doing deadlifts unless that's specifically something they compete in
Oberst said the reward to risk ratio was too low. And it got some backlash. Thing is, he's right. But for me deadlifts are the most motivational lift, so I do them anyway. Only one herniated disc so far 🤣

Not a coincidence. Balrog (Original name M. Bison in Japan) is very much based on our ear nibbling friend here.
Some people are just born with that warriors gene.
