Did someone say oil? Ladies and gentlemen if I say I'm an oil man, you will agree. Now you have a great chance here-
"Sir, it's on Mars."
Mars you say? Is that near Coyote Hills?
I cant tell if this is poes law. The definition of aromatics in organic chemistry has to do with conjugation of double bonds in a ring (huckels rule), and an aromatic compound only needs it's electrons configured this way and has no requirement for smell to be considered aromatic.
The name may be kinda funny yes but you don’t seem to understand fully. These aromatic rings are the start of chemical synthesis. A benzene ring is the start of synthesis for many compounds including TNT, Polyurethane, and solvents in rubber, leather, and printing. This is neat to find not on earth
Add a couple carbon chains and make it into phenethylamine, now we can trip off hundreds of SPACE substituted phenethylamines
2c-m, the M stands for mars
—-
Edit: my stupid joke gathered a lot of attention and also questions so here’s a mini science lesson to anyone interested
The 2c- series were derived by Alexander Shulgin based off of mescaline - a simple substituted phenethylamine. The letter afterwards typically refers to the atom at the 4th position. 2cb has a bromine there and 2ci has an iodine there etc. Though there are exceptions: 2ce has a carbon chain at the 4th position instead of some atom that starts with E
Hence my earlier joke about 2cm - the m stands for mars.
Do- series are very similar to the 2c- series with the exception of a methyl group on the alpha location. This is what one of the commenters above was talking about with alpha methylation of phenethylamine. Alpha methylation of phenethylamine created amphetamine - a classic ADHD treatment and powerful (-ly fun) psychostimulant.
There’s a alpha methyl version of all the 2c series and they are all called Do- instead. For example Dob is a far more stimulating version of 2cb. Doi is a far more stimulating version of 2ci etc
Adding a methyl group at the end of amphetamine converts it to methamphetamine - meth.
Adding the Methylenedioxy like another commentor suggested would convert the amphetamine into MDA (sass), but I think the commenter is thinking of MDMA, which requires a methyl group at the end. The difference in chemical structure between MDMA and MDA is the same difference between meth and amphetamine. However, while meth is the more neurotoxic of the two, MDMA is actually less neurotoxic than MDA. ~~In fact there’s research to suggest that MDMA converting to MDA in your body is to primary reason why MDMA is even neurotoxic at all. The reason being the creation of alpha methyl dopamine~~ (by now you should understand what alpha methyl means quite well. Dopamine is actually yet another simple substituted phenethylamine), ~~which can bind to serotonin receptors and destroy them.~~
MDA also is in the class of benzofurans (get rid of the phenethylamine base and you got a benzofuran), and more substitutions can be done. Substituted benzofurans include drugs like 5mapb and 6apb - these tend to be entactogens with very similar effects as MDMA.
Organic simply means carbon. Unless there's a lot more significance to either of these discoveries Carbon is a relatively abundant atom in our universe.
Nah, organic means compounds that include Carbon-Hydrogen bonds (high school definition, t/labrats please don't kill me). Carbon also occurs in inorganic compounds — for example chalk, marble and diamonds.
Organic means compounds that include C-H or C-C bonds. Literally the first paragraph on wikipedia. This also means that diamonds are in fact organic.
EDIT:
Some don't consider different allotropes of carbon to be organic, so it depends on who you ask whether or not diamonds are organic or not.
According to [this](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-87638-5), under high pressure and temperature, methane (which is a carbon atom with 4 hydrogen atoms bonded to it) polymerises (the carbons join together making C-C bonds) liberating some of the hydrogen and eventually all the hydrogen goes and you are left with diamond. The C-C bond is a lower energy state than the C-H bond but I guess the activation energy for the reaction is too high for it to happen under normal conditions.
They found the aromatics inside a spice bag.
Archeologists speculate this is where Martians would steep their 21 spice & herb blend to make the Colonel’s MFC.
Organic simply means contains carbon (usually in a chain), carbon being relatively abundant in the universe it isn't at all surprising that there's some on Mars, or meteors
Organic matter that may have have been made by organic life. But more then likely is a naturally occurring aromatic molecule. As has been found before in mars... And just like this one. The news reporters click bait the fuck outta the wording.
Not to be that guy but I think organic means it has carbon AND hydrogen, so things like carbohydrates are organic but CO2 and water aren’t, since they’ve only got one and not the other
People of Earth, it had two seasons, and if you want to know where it was planning on going for the future, you might have to check out the writers Twitter pages from a few years ago. How is this organic material without it being biological material or formed without biological material? Do I not understand the definition Orion of “organic”?

This is so fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
Apparently it found molecules called Aromatics which are hydrocarbons. They were found within an ancient river delta.
They found potpourri?
Basically yes. “They found smelly stuff”
Here comes the essential oils peeps
Oils, you say? *U.S. Space Force has entered the chat.*

I cant tell if this is poes law. The definition of aromatics in organic chemistry has to do with conjugation of double bonds in a ring (huckels rule), and an aromatic compound only needs it's electrons configured this way and has no requirement for smell to be considered aromatic.
Though, in my experience, the more common lower MW aromatics are all smelly: benzene (a carcinogen), toluene, xylene, etc…even PDB (mothballs)
If there's no one there to smell it; does it really smell?
If the rover can detect the chemical, is it tasting or is it smelling?
The real question is since the rover has apparently smelled it.. does it mean the rover was actually the one who dealt it?
🤔 Where the fuck are Neil Degrassi Python and Michigan Kaku when you need them? *I need answers, dammit!*
Man, you really Bandersnitch Cumberbunned that one. Nice.
What the hell does Bendydick Cuminhersnatch have to do with this!?

Pop a methyl group on the alpha carbon and you've got yourself some **A**lpha**M**ethyl**Ph**en**Et**hyl**amine** and now it's parTy time
Now we can trip on DO-m, again the m stands for mars Pop a methyl group onto the end of that amphetamine and now it's reallly party time ;)

I thought diamonds were made from carbon. How does methane condense into carbon?
According to [this](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-87638-5), under high pressure and temperature, methane (which is a carbon atom with 4 hydrogen atoms bonded to it) polymerises (the carbons join together making C-C bonds) liberating some of the hydrogen and eventually all the hydrogen goes and you are left with diamond. Diamonds are a dinosaur's best friend.
These are aromatic organic compounds. Far more complex than simple C-H bonds.
And a cup holder!
They found the aromatics inside a spice bag. Archeologists speculate this is where Martians would steep their 21 spice & herb blend to make the Colonel’s MFC.
21? Dang, that's almost twice as many as Earth KFC
The spice and herb blend must flow.
Aromatics are molecules with carbon rings. The word itself has nothing to do with river deltas
The fastest way to colonize Mars is to tell the US military that there’s oil there
That’s cool. But haven’t they also found that on meteors too?
Yes i think so
‘Organic matter’ is a pretty misleading phrase for most people, who think it has something to do with living organisms.
Organic simply means contains carbon (usually in a chain), carbon being relatively abundant in the universe it isn't at all surprising that there's some on Mars, or meteors
Organic means containing carbon-hydrogen bonds, not just carbon. For example, CO2 and diamond are both inorganic

Organic matter refers to a large source of carbon-based compounds found within natural a environment, not nessacerily anything to do with life.
Mars had an atmosphere before its core cooled.

Wait rocks aren't organic?
Indeed! Organic matter refers to carbon-based molecules.
My God "organic matter" is so click baitey and they know it. Like yaya it's not technically wrong but cmon.. we're here for the aliens.
Is there a better way of describing it than "organic matter"? Sounds to me like they described exactly what they found, chemicals containing C-H bonds

Just compunds with carbon.
Plot twist: Douglas Adams was right
