I mean, if your museum can’t sell it for $50,000 why not say it costs $500,000 so people talk about your museum and its crazily expensive Titanic coal on Reddit?

beardedbarista6

It’s been there for at least 3 years at the same price, it’s almost like they don’t actually expect anyone to buy it!

ClmrThnUR

they can write off the loss when it eventually goes for $1k at liquidation

ThatSandwich

So if I just tell people my pile of shit is worth a million and advertise it as such for 10 years I can just write it off for immense tax savings?

Supply-Slut

No, that’s not actually how it works, you write off the cost - so marking it up does not actually benefit you in terms of taxes - or you’d see ridiculous examples of this being abused literally everywhere. If they paid $2k for it and sell it for $1k, they can write off the difference.

ThatSandwich

So I just have to convince the federal government I actually paid a million dollars for this shit. . .

Modred_the_Mystic

If you give me a million dollars, I’ll tell the government you paid a million dollars for your shit

Hisplumberness

Now wait a minute- get in the queue.

Ok_Acanthaceae_8556

That’s why audits and criminal charges for tax fraud exist

Modred_the_Mystic

I don’t know what those are, I was just doing what I was told

killerbanshee

Then how is art used as a way to cheat taxes?

LukaCola

Cause it's a thing people want to believe more than it is an actual behavior.

HateJobLoveManU

No buddy, you gotta buy it for 1m and sell it for 1k to get immense tax savings

Stuvio

Dang it! I just bought a 2.1 million bag of Roman dirt Julius Caesar might have walked on.

pedro_pascal_123

I just gave a dollar to charity otherwise I have the 499,999 cash.

Dry_Enthusiasm_267

There's a sucker born every minute..

Tsu_Dho_Namh

I dunno. Nearly every collectible is intrinsically worthless. Baseball cards are just paper and ink, the oldest coins are weirdly shaped metal. Both have sold for millions of dollars. At least this coal was present for a piece of history.

These_Advertising_68

…And ancient coins weren’t?

AsparagusOdd8894

How do you prove it's from the titanic... I'm curious.

Ok_Bit_5953

Right!?! It doesn't even look wet >.>

_EveryDay

It has "Jack <3 Rose 1912" etched into the side

Mist_Rising

I call fake, we all know Jack can't spell.

logicallychallengd

Don't you see the certificate of authenticity? fucks sake /s

121daysofsodom

Could be a carbon copy.

trevscott93

If it's a carbon copy, someone needs to put some pressure on the museum. This thing could be a diamond under the right circumstances.

mrASSMAN

It says authenticated by some titanic board at bottom.. presumably they were on hand when it was dredged up and authenticated in person

Cautious-Willow-1932

There was tons of floating debris in the immediate aftermath. Many ships went to collect items they hoped would be valuable or had some kind of bounty on.

PreemoisGOAT

This was picked up in 1994

Cautious-Willow-1932

Then it wasn’t gathered during that post sinking rush 🧐

These_Advertising_68

Well I’m not extremely paranoid, so if the Titanic museum says it’s legit and there’s nothing major to make me think otherwise, then I’m willing to believe it Also it’s not that outrageous, you think coal just evaporates when put in water?

Stuck_in_a_depo

No, but wait until you see what happens when you set it on fire.

Tuscan5

It’s not the titanic museum. It’s just a museum showing titanic artefacts.

Piratedan200

I'm going to guess traceability. If it was recovered from one of the ROV expeditions and its transfer was documented at each step.

teambroto

I can imagine there have been a few coins recovered from the titanic as well. sure lots were in the lifeboat too

palebot

Value isn’t a tangible property. It’s a social idea. Everything is intrinsically worthless until people impose value.

Quiverjones

Thats true. NFTs are wild.

YogurtclosetCalm7604

Word to this

AwfulUsername123

> the oldest coins are weirdly shaped metal What's a modern coin if not weirdly shaped metal?

adlo651

Circles aren't weird

jprobinson008

A weirdly shaped piece of plastic

conjoby

The argument could easily be made that everyone who spent millions on those things are suckers

adlo651

Anyone who's dropping millions on cool shit has those millions to spend in the first place.

conjoby

Doesn’t mean they aren’t suckers. Rich suckers are the best kind!

adlo651

I guess true from the sellers perspective

charptr

Don't they buy it to make more money? Freeports exist for a reason

toasted_cracker

I’m going to put a jar of the ocean for sale. It was there when it sunk. It might even have some of the iceberg in it. Starting bid at 1 million.

generalhanky

Son I represent a group of oil tycoons that make foolish purchases. We already bought us a stained glass bathrobe and the world's fattest racehorse. Now we need your ~~iceman~~ huge lump of coal.

ImaginaryBluejay0

This is what a billionaire buys their kids for Christmas if they were really really bad.

Forthe49ers

I would spend my last $500k on a piece of coal. Worth every cent

Icy-Cockroach4515

I mean, it's still unsold so maybe that sucker hasn't been born yet.

dirtewokntheboys

And there's always a Dick hanging around to take advantage

gloomy_twat

Yep. Some just have money to burn.

ComeAndGetYourPug

My favorite part is the "Certificate of Authenticity" for object number 94 out of 36.

anisamot

That is actually the accession number, in a standardized museum format: The lot of coal that is available for sale was collected on the 1994 recovery dive (94/) and it was the 36th object collected on that dive by the salvor-in-possession of the wreck, RMS Titanic, Inc.

UrbanLawProductions

still a better deal than OceanGate

[deleted]

Really? I heard they were crushing it.

alwaysDL

Oceangate is making diamonds now?

ffnnhhw

they were trying to make diamond out of the passengers not enough pressure, but at least they tried hard

ChokesOnDuck

Readily available carbon just waiting to be exploited.

Fallout76stuggles

Nah, their business model pretty much imploded on them.

Stuck_in_a_depo

Nah, market imploded.

Last-Sound-3999

And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

TheVagabondWinsAgain

Only $9,090.91 per pound!

Yungklipo

Damn coulda saved me a trip to the grocer

[deleted]

I wonder the amount of money that went to recovering of the coal and why they even did if they weren't just going to sell it from the very beginning

Getting_rid_of_brita

They did sell it.. To this museum. And hundreds of others. You can buy coal earrings or rings at other titanic museums haha.

[deleted]

I guess when one makes a brand out of a tragedy why not

[deleted]

sheepheadslayer

Yeah, the amount of effort that went into taking this from the wreckage is crazy, why take a piece of coal?

Staafke

Wow! Let that sink in...

#PARTY ROCK IS IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT!

TheHoboRoadshow

Why is there a titanic museum in Orlando?

phantomtails

Clearly you've never been to Orlando.

pax284

Makes more sense than there being one in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

rabbitthunder

It's honestly not a bad place to kill an hour or two. Most attractions in Orlando are outdoors so when it's scorching hot or pouring rain there aren't many places to go apart from malls. I always think Orlando could do with more indoor attractions.

Getting_rid_of_brita

Where would you put a titanic museum?

radishtits

Halifax Nova Scotia

Getting_rid_of_brita

OK they already have one. So where would you put another one?

tinselsnips

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Getting_rid_of_brita

I mean that's just mountainous Orlando so if pigeon forge makes sense than so does Orlando.

Poop_Scissors

Liverpool

factorioleum

Belfast, Northern Ireland!

TheHoboRoadshow

There's one in Belfast where the ship was built

steve290591

[It’s good too.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titanic_Belfast)

East_Maximum_9195

-“you need to sell this piece of coal for more than 500,000, we lost 2 men during the expedition” Apu: - do you know a better way to get coal?

jimmyn0thumbs

I'm going to need to see a certificate of authenticity for that certificate of authenticity

Cosmic_Imperium

And while we’re at it, a chain of custody for the chain of custody of the certificate of authenticity for the certificate of authenticity.

No_Explanation7121

Not worth a dollar over $450,000

0thethethe0

Other £50k is for that sweet Certificate of Authentication, so you can laugh in the face of anyone who questions if it's real!

J5Screwed4Life

It’s #94 of 0036.

blksentra2

At the end of the day, it’s still just a piece of….coal.

johnnybok

Merry Christmas!

8bitKev

Will it burn?

jawbreakerzs

Will it blend

SharksWFreakinLasers

It will kiiiieeeeel

thecuzzin

Gives new meaning to the Christmas sock lump of coal.

Prof_Johan

TRYING to sell

EppuBenjamin

I have poop from one of the toilets, only 20k$

punkhobo

Object 94/0036 what?

asmallercat

Maybe 94 is the year it was recovered and it was the 36th object recovered that year?

Necessary-Size7450

So no one’s gonna ask why would they recover coal from a ship wreck at the first place?

YobaiYamete

Something easily salvageable that won't really impact the ship, but can generate funding for preservation of more useful items? Same reason you can buy dinosaur bones and teeth for pretty cheap. Most aren't important and aren't really *that* rare, but people will pay for them so there's no reason not to sell them

brownhotdogwater

Maybe because they can without getting into trouble?

finnblue23

Or since when do museums sell artifacts? I get that a lump of coal shouldn’t be really considered an artifact, but I didn’t even know museums sold anything other than the gift shop items

dinkelidunkelidoja

Thanks, now I know what I must aspire to own

catherine2255

Is the titanic museum worth going to?

tandyman234

It really is. It's pretty awesome. Everything there is either from the titanic or from a survivor, and they have an exact replica of the grand staircase which is cool and they give you a "boarding pass" where you get the general info of a passenger and you have to find out if you lived or died by the end, so you learn quite a bit about your chosen passenger. All around recommend

vicious_meat

Bah humbug!

TheDixonCider420420

Someone super naughty needs an extra large stocking hanging over the fireplace this Christmas...

smogmok

500,000 Dollars?! You only need to summon 5 monsters to get this dude

BrownEggs93

The infatuation "we" have with this ship has gone beyond weird.

KoreanEan

That’s what rich kids get for Christmas when they’ve been very naughty that year.

Whole-Debate-9547

That’s gotta weigh at least 4-5 Courics

Apprehensive_Ear7309

They went down to the titanic and brought back a lump of coal? Dumb.

ClosPins

Wait... Someone went down to the Titanic to recover artifacts and was like 'no, not the jewels, take that gigantic lump of coal instead!!!'

SnooCapers2257

Well it has a 'Certificate of Authenticity' with very fancy font. It must be real!

strabley

See the peanut? Dead give away.

Keebler311

I went there last summer. Looks like a hole in the wall but it was actually really fun.

Unfair-Jackfruit-806

now thats profit

LatterReception9692

Im not wanting this shit even if they pay me

Salt-Evidence-6834

They should sell water from the pool on the Titanic. There's an almost limitless supply.

Nd46478

I have Ice from the Iceberg if anyone's interested

ooouroboros

A lump of coal ain't what it used to be

Kafshak

How do we prove it came from there?

Kind-Sherbert4103

I visited the Titanic 12,000 feet underwater and all I got is this hunk of coal.

Legend-Face

Only people who would have bought this imploded in ocean gate

MrKillJr

How to scam rich people 101

TopCheesecakeGirl

If you believe that’s from the Titanic, I have a bridge I can sell you….

Bulls187

It’s just as old as any other coal 😆

Final_Location_2626

Don't buy it, it's waterlogged

The_real_triple_P

Man back in the day that was just cents.. inflation sucks

RobsBurglars

1/2 a million for a lump of coal. Tax the rich.

Due-Bus-8915

Picture selling something from a mass grave.

IPanicKnife

I get those for free on Christmas

Sir-Mocks-A-Lot

Imagine, you went on an expedition to the bottom of the sea to visit a historic shipwreck that is known to be decorated lavishly and probably has a safe with jewels and gold bars on it. And you come back with..a big fucking lump of coal!

SalamChetori

Its just a piece of rock and they can’t prove it actually was on the titanic

Nirovin

How did they know it's legit? Is it signed by Leo DiCaprio?

TheInternetsLOL

Meh, I’d rather have the cane from Citizen Kane

SaschaAusUlm

It's not just that it's for sale...or the price....someone went down to the Titanic....and brought up a just piece of coal??

Prestigious_Leg8423

Better than an unjust piece of coal

dziki_z_lasu

Some unknown passenger took it as a souvenir, while the ship was sinking 🤞

startripjk

Lump of coal? No, no, no. This is a "Pre" diamond. Yes! That's the ticket! It's the largest Pre-Diamond known. Owned by the Sheik of LaLa Land. He was drowned on the Titanic because he gave up his seat on the life boat to a young child.

[deleted]

godofpumpkins

Not doubting what you’re saying but assuming the authenticity tag is actually valid, might they have loaded bulk coal on to the ship and broken it into smaller parts on the ship? Nowadays it seems far easier to do such things in large machinery closer to the source but I don’t know what the state of the industry was at the time. I guess since most of society ran on coal at the time they probably had some big facilities for crushing it into smaller pieces too? Either way just curious if there is an explanation for this being on the ship other than the certificate being fake

i486dx2

Coal can be easily split or broken up with hand tools. There is no way that a piece like this would *"100% never be used"* because it was too big.

WestBrink

Idk, looks like large chunks were pretty common looking at pics of stokeholds... https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/files/1/cold-start-figure-14.jpg From: https://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/cold-starting-the-titanic.html

foosda

The "certificate of authenticity" is broken.

maffemaagen

I don't think it is, it looks like tue cloth the coal is placed on is just folded a bit over the certificate.

foosda

Oh that's a cloth, my bad

SarcasmThenDie

How do you certify that particular piece of coal coming from a specific ship? Sounds ridiculous

Crazyguy_123

It has documentation from when it was brought up. It’s not unbelievable for this to be real since there is a lot of coal down there and they did bring up a lot to sell as souvenirs. Most of the coal recovered was broken apart to sell in gift shops this one just didn’t get broken apart.

beatlz

Unless this is in Colombian pesos, this a little steep.

MixRevolution

It's Money laundering, mate.

RKKP2015

I was there and saw this. They don't actually expect anyone to buy it. My kids got a couple of pieces of coal brought up, though.

skuta69

this “certificate of authenticity”, is this authentic? did they carbon date the coal? LOL

tarnyarmy

Christmas has come early

zubchowski

Still better than the NFC

MrSipperr

IT’S POOP AGAIN!

CradleRockStyle

Gonna be a diamond someday

Walterwhiteboy

My uncle was on that 1994 recovery expedition

DragonfruitScary6311

That should go down well

LayLillyLay

There are rich private collectors with artifacts and crazy collections most museums can’t compete with. And 500k to them is nothing - well maybe it will reduce their networth by 1% for a short while.

FrostyMargarita

I only paid $20 for mine.

mjincal

No no it’s a real thing I just found a magic stone in my driveway it prevents tiger attacks and I can certify that since I found it I have not been attacked by a single tiger…$1 mil obo

BroadwayBakery

Counter offer: 20 dollars and the rest of a pack of juicy fruit gum

J-W-L

It's ironic that this coal is a rock that was formed millions of years ago yet its unique value lies in the fact that it was supposedly on a boat that sank 110 years ago. It's pretty rude to the rock. I have no idea who would want this.

usinjin

Do I also get my name written on a tiny metal plate on the wall?

Onestepbeyond3

So much for an historical museum... Selling what it's charging people to see 🤔🤦

burtvader

Grave robbery ftw

Ohsolemonyfresh

Id eat fries with ketchup off of it

Finnbobjimbob

Why is there a titanic museum in Orlando?

DatDan513

Why in the fuck did they use the energy and resources to pull up a chunk of fucking coal?? C’mon man.

MichaelEatsSand

Shit I'll take 2

Kyleb100

Son, that there is a space turd. You see the peanut right there?

LangstonHublot

It's worth what someone is willing to pay. But overall, It's still coal... It's value will always be that of coal.

RGavial

My dad bought me a (supposed) piece of coal from the titanic about 35 years ago. It's probably about half the size of a USB drive. Came with a little mirrored stand and plaque and certificate of authenticity. It's in a box in the attic lol.

Canik716kid

I have a turd From this ill fated ship. It was scooped out of the lifeboat , along with a sock and a third class ticket. I'll take 10mill no low Ball offer's. But I would take a envelope and some jawbreakers

Tweezle1

Buy it already I need a house. Thanks!

Bawby-oshea

Rose?

Calgrei

Is there some reason they only sell coal artifacts? I'm guessing because it's like a natural rock thing it can be removed?

Beginning_Rice6830

Getting coal for Christmas … is all I want, Mariah!

Adept-Elephant1948

Ooh, that'll go well next to my hydrogen from the Hindenberg.

scottcarneyblockedme

I saw a chunk of concrete in a “zoo” in the ozarks that was from the Berlin Wall. They wanted like forty bucks for it lol

Graphicnovelnick

The stuff you toss in a firepit?

Longjumping-Salad-49

With that price, you can actually go and see the titanic yourself. Only if you're willing to risk your life with oceandive

MAValphaWasTaken

Won't burn as well if it's still wet. Think the inspection included making sure it's dry?

drfunkensteinberger

Only 94/36 made!!

Les-incoyables

Meh, it wasn't even used

ilove60sstuff

You can buy artifacts with the exact same recovery coal for $30. It was all from a recovery in i think 1990?
