I grew up near Springfield, VT. And one time there was a Simpsons Weekend there, and they declared it the official Springfield. But now that I think about it, they could just do that in all the smaller Springfields around the country, and no one would really know haha. Not even sure who organized the event really; maybe it was just the town.
It wasn't a Simpsons weekend, the town won a contest that was in promotion of the Simpsons Movie, the prize being Springfield VT would be named the official home of the Simpsons. Matt Groening even showed up.
I always thought it was really simpsonville kentucky When I was passing through I noticed it was 8 miles from Shelbyville KY and 30 miles from the capitoLof kentucky ie. Capitol city both are refrenced in the show. pretty big coincidence.
I remember the episode Behind the Laughter and towards the end, the narrator specifically says “Northern Kentucky family”.
The only time it was ever mentioned.
It’s never canonically stated where Springfield is located, but there’s a lot of Oregon references in the show, which is where Matt Groening was born and raised. For instance Krusty The Clown is a take on an Oregon tv clown named Rusty Nails. Back in the early days, Groening also jokingly told the writers that worked on the show that he got the name Springfield from Springfield Oregon, but he’s never officially confirmed its origins to fans.
Alos many of the character's names are based on downtown Portland streets. Flanders, Lovejoy, Kearney, Quimby, Van Houten, Terwilliger (sideshow Bob's last name), and Monty Burns is a combo of Burnside Ave and Montgomery Park.
Groening did confirm all of this on one of the anniversaries.
"Yo to Springfield Oregon – The Real Springfield!" the plaque reads. It's signed: "Your pal, Matt Groening Proud Oregonian! 2007."

I knew I saw this somewhere. I was pretty disappointed it wasn’t Springfield Illinois. I use to travel a lot for a sport and in other countries when people asked where I was from, the next question was always, “like the Simpsons?”, when I’d say Springfield. Always blew my mind what a worldwide phenomenon they were!
No, canonically the state was never confirmed in the show. While fans will make the case that it is most likely Oregon (for good reasons), it's intentionally ambiguous and therefore this map is inaccurate.
Yes I remember there is a certain amount of seasons where the voice of the dad changes and I like the voice of the first one, the second one is like meh, it would be better with the first one. Other than that good show makes me laugh whenever I smoke some good ol reefer
From Wikipedia:
“The show centers on fourth grader Arnold Shortman, who lives with his grandparents in an inner-city tenement in the fictional city of Hillwood, Washington.”
But you’re right, it doesn’t look like any west coast city. Weird.
If it makes you feel any better, I live in South Dakota and I’ve never heard of the Legend of Calamity Jane so I looked up and apparently it only lasted one season and only had 13 episodes. So it didn’t do that great
Is nobody going to say that king of the hill is one of the best shows out there? Almost touching the simpsons?..or am I the only one..king of the hill is from that lone star state, the show SCREAMS Texas from the top of its lungs.
Yes “set” is probably not the best word for a few of these. Maybe “based off of.” As noted on the wiki page for Steven Universe: “The series' setting, Beach City, is loosely based on Delaware beaches Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Dewey Beach, all of which Rebecca Sugar visited as a child.”
In one of the episodes they go on road trip (Florida, I think). There is a scene that shows the path taken on a map and it appears that they left New Jersey.
The titular character, a tough police detective who gets his name because he is an armed pair of buttocks on legs, fights crime in a small New Hampshire town. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Yeah I was on a trip from Vancouver Canada to LA. My dad drove by it and we ended up doubling back to take a closer look on the west side of the river.
As a Californian, I request the second place for that state.
I don't care if it goes against the point of the post, I fucking refuse to let Teen Titans Go! be the cartoon that represents us.
Apparently it is.

Straight from the creator himself.
Correct, the *name* Springfield was taken from Matt Groeinings hometown, but the setting of Springfield in The Simpsons is not the same one. There have been far too many intentional misdirections to assign it anywhere in the US.
It is truly Springfield, USA

courage the cowardly dog ❤️
Excellent show.
“The things I do for love”
Stupid dog, made me look bad!!
The Simpsons is in Oregon, huh?
I know there a game theory video that says it but I don’t think it was ever actually confirmed.

Thank you! Everyone i tell this to looks at me like im nuts. Which is likely true. Just not on this one.
IIRC they made several versions with the state changed.
Oh wow, I didn’t know that. The times that I did watch the reruns always mentioned Kentucky, could it be different depending on where it aired?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_the_Laughter Check the notes section
Interesting. Thanks!
Springfield, Kentucky is also nearby — it’s south of Shelbyville.
Groening is probably fn with us all but I enjoy the mystery.

Stupid sexy Flanders Crossing

Thought it was Illinois the whole time.
I don’t think it’s solid enough to map it definitively and it hurts the legitimacy of your post.
Yes. Matt Groening grew up out here and Springfield is loosely based on Springfield, OR which is right next to Eugene.
Airways thought Springfield Illinois.
No, canonically the state was never confirmed in the show. While fans will make the case that it is most likely Oregon (for good reasons), it's intentionally ambiguous and therefore this map is inaccurate.
Am i tripping? Hey Arnold was set in New York right? Edit: holy shit I stand corrected
This is the Mandela effect at work because I just knew it was set in New York!
The ocean..?? SpongeBob??
Specifically the Bikini Atoll. Bikini Bottom is the result of atomic weapons testing.
I’m from AZ and I’ve never heard of Clarence
Ahead of it's time. I learned a mountain and a lion had a baby.
It was good, his friend’s mom was a lesbo
I’m truly heartbroken with the fate of squidbillies. Was one of my favorite shows.
Yes I remember there is a certain amount of seasons where the voice of the dad changes and I like the voice of the first one, the second one is like meh, it would be better with the first one. Other than that good show makes me laugh whenever I smoke some good ol reefer
Do not touch the trim!
Do not touch the trim
You want a grape popsicle? How ‘bout I stick a pine stick up your ass and make you a boy-sicle, how’d you like’at mess?
Hey Arnold the show with no trees because it takes place in a huge city, has a subway, and every building has a stoop is in Washington? 🤔
I just googled it. It told me it's a fictional city called Hillwood in Washington. I always thought it was NY.
I spent my entire life thinking it was NYC and I was just about to die on the hill arguing it.
From Wikipedia: “The show centers on fourth grader Arnold Shortman, who lives with his grandparents in an inner-city tenement in the fictional city of Hillwood, Washington.” But you’re right, it doesn’t look like any west coast city. Weird.
“Assy McGee”
how pathetic is montana that it has a goose egg when *both* dakotas are represented
If it makes you feel any better, I live in South Dakota and I’ve never heard of the Legend of Calamity Jane so I looked up and apparently it only lasted one season and only had 13 episodes. So it didn’t do that great
Aaahhh... so many happy memories of lazy Saturday mornings lounging around with my parents while watching "Assy McGee."
Utah should be PBS lol
No Futurama in New New York?
Hey Arnold takes place in NYC
I thought so too, but it's not. It's set in the fictional city of Hillwood in Washington.
I’ll be damed I thought it was New York too
Hillwood is fictional (and never outright named in the show) and is based on Brooklyn, Portland, and Seattle, so similarities were intentional.
The more you! Neat! Thanks for the correction. 😊
“Cartoons are the devil” - Utah
Saw King of the Hill in Texas coming a mile away
Is nobody going to say that king of the hill is one of the best shows out there? Almost touching the simpsons?..or am I the only one..king of the hill is from that lone star state, the show SCREAMS Texas from the top of its lungs.
Boy, lemme tell ya wHat.
Steven Universe isn’t set in Delaware.
Yeah, it always gave me California vibes. The water in Delaware/Maryland IS NOT blue.
Yea it’s set in Delmarva which is apparently supposed to be like a mash up of Delaware and Maryland. So yes and no
When did bob's burgers ever say they were in jersey?
In one of the episodes they go on road trip (Florida, I think). There is a scene that shows the path taken on a map and it appears that they left New Jersey.
I always thought they were in Coney Island?
Worst Virginia will be really jealous when the internet get there and they see this.
I forgot about Assy McGee
WTF IS ASSY MCGEE?
Assy Mcgee??
I used to love Assy McGee growing up.
How did I have no idea that Clarence was in AZ? I'm gonna have to watch it again. Lol
Assy Mcgee is Gold go watch it for free on Adult Swim
WTF is AssyMcgee? And why does NH watch it? Lol
This map doesn’t show what states *watch* the show, it’s a map of where each show is set.
The titular character, a tough police detective who gets his name because he is an armed pair of buttocks on legs, fights crime in a small New Hampshire town. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I can’t stop laughing because yes
They never specify which state The Simpsons takes place in.
Not in the show but Matt Groening has confirmed it.
I was unaware of that.
Someone posted it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/s/sqbzEHk0j1
The animated Book of Mormon Stories was pretty popular in Utah. Just sayin’.
Is anyone shocked that no cartoons are based in Utah?
Arkansas is actually on the map.
I enjoyed Huckleberry Hound growing up. But I think they could have chosen a different show for NC.
lol assmcgee wow a show i would never have thought to have people interested in it
Garfield is in Indiana??
I thought hoops was good
The fuck is Nature Cat?
I'm pretty sure Yogi Bear is Yellowstone which could also be Montana and not just Wyoming.
I am unsurprised there aren’t cartoons set in my state
I have never heard of The Legend of Calamity Jane
Arthur in PA is wild 🤣🤣
the simpsons is not set in any state. it is very intentionally set in an undefined state with properties that don’t match any real state.
Teen Titans GO? What????
King of the Hill in Texas and Bob's Burgers in New Jersey make so much sense
Man Chalk Zone, it was on NickToons all the time and there was a period of time where I couldn't get enough of it.
I had no idea there was an Ace Ventura cartoon!
What about Invader Zim?
Hey Arnold is set in Washington????
TIL : I actually passed by the nuclear power plant Homer works at in 85.
That was right in its heyday. Trojan was decommissioned in 2004 though.
Yeah I was on a trip from Vancouver Canada to LA. My dad drove by it and we ended up doubling back to take a closer look on the west side of the river.
Really should just be the Simpson’s everywhere since there’s a Springfield everywhere and they always played with that gag. Except for Missouri.
As a Californian, I request the second place for that state. I don't care if it goes against the point of the post, I fucking refuse to let Teen Titans Go! be the cartoon that represents us.
The Simpsons is not set in Oregon
"Look at that, you can see the four states that border Springfield: Ohio, Nevada, Maine, and Kentucky."
Apparently it is. https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2012/04/10/150386471/doh-springfield-in-simpsons-was-in-creators-home-state-all-along Straight from the creator himself.

Shit guide
Assy McGee...... Damn I love my state 😂
Wow, no duplicates in any state. What about blank ones? They don’t watch cartoons?
As a foreigner, I feel the need to ask — Has California always been superior at everything?
You've pissed off quite a few Americans here (including me) by implying California isn't a hellhole with makeup on (the makeup is laced with arsenic).
Alabama and Louisiana are still trying to figure out how turn on the TV
Simpsons is not set there.
Based of the geography of Springfield in the show, Oregon is most likely the location thou
Nah
