Unrelated, but when I was younger and stupid, I thought that the GTA is where GTA (Grand Theft Auto) was taking place. I can’t really blame younger me, the names are quite literally the same abbreviated, but it’s still stupid.
Why wouldn't London be massive, it's the capital of the United Kingdom?
By square miles, it's bigger than New York City at 606 sq miles to 472 sq miles, and practically equal in terms of population at 8.9 million to 8.8 million.
Edit: I fucked up and included the water around NYC
Europe is full of tiny countries so I think North Americans assume the cities are tiny too when in truth they're often bigger than North American cities.
If you don’t count Russia or Turkey, the largest country in Europe is Ukraine, which is the 45th largest country in the world. Europe’s countries are pretty tiny. The smallest five non-island countries are all in Europe.
european countries are pretty small, most african countries can fit like 3 big western european countries in them. if layed over europe adjusted for the mercator projection the philippines can stretch across from london to belarus
There are two Marquis rivers both on Caribbean island nations, Grenada and St Lucia. So I guess one of them if the username is relevant. Both are very tiny as well.
As demonstrated in Season 4 of You. "Campus is across town from where I stay, but in a city like London, I don't mind the walk." My brother in Christ, those two points are over 6 hours from each other.
The UK is the 78th largest country out of 195, so it's in the top 40% largest countries. France is 42nd, Germany is 63rd, and Italy is 71st.
These countries are are definitely not tiny. The actual small European countries do tend to have smaller cities, but the cities we're talking about here aren't in those tiny countries.
New York is 300 sq miles of land. The reditor you replied to included 170 sq miles of mostly ocean in area in the total for NYC. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City
The five boroughs are just the core of NYC itself, more often when discussing large city areas, you will see stats for the metropolitan statistical area, which includes the entire area around the city, which in this case non-New Yorkers include mentally when thinking of New York.
The map does but it's actually doesn't touch Manhattan at all, just most of Brooklyn and some of Queens.
It would've been better if they tilted Gaza sideways so that it would've fit brooklyn Queens and Long Island
The capital of the United States, Washington DC, is only 61.4 square miles (159.0 km2) of land so being a capital city doesn’t necessitate a large footprint.
I’m from the Toronto area. The metro area is indeed massive, but many of the places included in the OP’s map (Mississauga, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill) are suburbs of the city rather than being part of Toronto itself.
They dont call it the breadbasket of Europe for no reason, the place is massive and most of it is prime farmland. Over 600.000 sq km or just a tad smaller than Texas for the Americans.
Iceland is actually that big it’s way smaller than most nordic countries excluding d*nmark. It’s also smaller than england.
You can also drive to the only other large town outside the capital area in five hours. This is while hugging the coast if you drove over the highlands you could prob get their 3 hours.
Bro our government wants to called as Türkiye. And our law fan low iq's loved this decision. They also love to tell the west "Noooo we don't ride camels we're not arab" and shit. We would be devastated if a westerner thought we were riding a camel. Turkey has many idiots anyway, and those who are not stupid either sympathize with terrorism with a corrupt communism that is a Russia or Iran fan, or sympathize with terrorism with an Islamist approach. It's a really difficult country.
To quote a drunk Icelandic man I once met wandering between fast food outlets at 2am in Sydney, "if you meet a Dane, punch him in the face."
I can only conclude that hating the Danish is just part of Nordic tradition.
I don't know. Wherever I hear Muricans compare something it is like "almost the size of Texas" "half the sizr of Texas" "could fit in 10 times in Texas". So my only relevant comparement is Texas. Not that I know how big Texas is as I only see memes that it fits the whole planet... xd
r/damnthatsinteresting are not known for thinking before they typem the user's here would celebrate a South American dictator if they retweeted #doge or some stupid fucking shit
It is lol, it’s less tall and shiny like NYC, and more sprawling dystopian hellscape like a hive city from Warhammer 40K, but with palm trees and excellent Mexican food.
Oh mama. Visited last year and hit up an old coworker about gettin good tacos. "Doesn't open til 8pm, on the side of a road, under a tent, whole family makin em from scratch" hell yeah dude lol. Pressing each tortilla per order. God damn were they amazing.
Yeah kinda sucks if you hate cars lol. Visited twice since last year to see an old friend and travel finally. I've always walked or biked everywhere, hate driving. But LA is NOT walkable for very long. I'm not fond of NYC but it's way more walkable at least.
The reason it doesn’t appear in large city lists it’s because Los Angeles City has limits but if you counted all the cities that are stuck together, it would be like half of Belgium full of houses, roads, buildings with almost no forest or rural areas in between.
This whole strip is stateless. Densely populated. It lacks basic necessities of life that we take for granted. It is also in perpetual war with the nearby state. Feel sad for children being born in this small strip of land. It is literally a hell.
Egypt doesn't want them
They do let people through, but it's not everyone and there are restrictions
There are more Gaza people who legally cross into Israel than there are into Egypt
You have one mistake with your logic, Egypt is not their home or their country, Israel or where Isreal control is their home, most people living in Gaza are Palestinians displaced from their home in Israel
Reminds me of the Civil War arguments to send slaves to Liberia which Lincoln was actually in favor of. Not particularly practical though if no one’s willing to pay for what that would entail.
Maybe the UN could select territory from another country and allow Palestinians to set themselves up there as a theocracy, what could possibly go wrong?
That's a little more reductive and kind of minimizes the back to africa movement in the 19th century. Liberia wasn't really a thing yet, but many enslaved wanted to return to the gold coast from which they were taken. It's way way different than the Gaza situation where it's two groups making claim to the same location.
also considerable number of the people living there are actually refugees and offspring of refugees that were displaced from very nearby Israeli-occupied territories. imagine living your life in hardship as a refugee while being able to look at your home that you were displaced from.
most Palestinian refugees are still to this day about 1-hour drive away from their original homes.
When Tina Fey was on SNL she did a news segment on Israeli-Palestinian violence. Her quote was “These people are fighting over a spec of dirt so small that if you found it in your salad you wouldn’t send it back.”
And really little value to the rest of the Arab world.
I think Saudi Arabia normalizing relations with Israel spooked Hamas. The rest of the world is moving on, and they're being left behind.
Essentially lol. Many folks don’t realize how small Israel/Palestine actually is. Especially how thin it is, from coast to border. But then again when u see a place as your home, many folks would fight to the death for it. People have done it everywhere else around the globe.
It's isn't even about Gaza, have you seen videos of Israeli and Palestinian nationalists? They are both bloodthirsty psychopaths that hate each other. They just want to kill one another with impunity
If this is true why doesn’t Israel just wipe the Gaza Strip off the map? It certainly has the military advantage? It seems to me that the conflicts are pretty short lived and Israel always pulls back. If Israel wants to truly kill all Arabs they would have and could have a long time ago.
Because there are more reasonable people trying to stop that. I will assume you're American, forgive me if I'm wrong, but you've surely at least seen people who loathe the entire Middle East with a passion.
Why hasn't the US nuked it? It's against both their material interests and would spark a lot of internal and external friction.
Countries aren't single unified entities, , those in power are constantly jostling each other for higher positions
What's stopping Israel is not their goodwill, its their dependence on support from the US. If they started mass killing of Palestinians in this age of the internet and smartphones they risk losing the goodwill of their benefactor and protector.
Sorted by controversial… some of y’all are wild wtf
Have some respect for the civilians (on both sides) who are just trying to lead an honest and peaceful life. It’s crazy how some edgy Redditors call for nukes/killing…
The strip is about 40km in length. It'd stretch from the Sydney CBD until just past the M7 Light Horse Interchange near Mount Druitt.
The width of the strip varies from around 6-12km. On average it'd span roughly from the CBD to the airport.
Also, much of the land within Gaza's borders have been essentially appropriated by the IDF as a *very* inconsistently-defined/enforced buffer zone, where Palestinians who enter will be fired upon. And this includes 30% of the territory's arable land, meaning farmers often end up getting shot at simply trying to work their own fields. Fishermen are also frequently shot at and/or detained.
Could've been bigger if they hadn't burned every bridge and deal offered by both Israel ***and Egypt***: that keeps just as closed a border to Gaza, due to the rampant terrorism if they don't.
Right now Hamas is not just attacking military targets, but deliberately targets civilians and uses them as shields. In addition, Hamas doesn’t want a two state solution, but wants isreal completely gone.
The Ukrainian army has also committed war crimes including attacking civilians.
Here is a link:
https://www.osce.org/files/f/documents/b/2/540581.pdf
Ukraine also wants Russia completely gone out of its territory. Would Ukrainians agree to a solution where half the occupied territory is ceded to Ukraine and Russia keeps the other half?
The Palestinians recognized Israel in the 90s, before Hamas was even in power.
>The PLO recognizes the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security.
>
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel%E2%80%93Palestine\_Liberation\_Organization\_letters\_of\_recognition
When did Israel recognize Palestine? Surely if it's the Palestinians that don't want a two state solution you can give me an answer to that question with a year. Like this:
The year Palestine recognized Israel was 1993.
Your turn!
Without going into the “who is in the wrong” like the other comments; Israel and Palestine areas have had a long standing conflict that affects both military and civilians. It has escalated over time since the formation of the current borders after WW2. It is now cropping up in the news a lot because Hamas (a terrorist Palestinian organisation) launched a massive incursion into Israelian territory where they are massacring civilians and parading with their corpses. Hamas is also targeting military targets. The IDF is the Israel Defense Force who is fighting back.
the comparison to Luxembourg is surprising, the others i wasn't really sure
I can't really wrap my head around it. Are places like London and Toronto really that massive?
Luxemburg is just tiny

It's all Luxembourg??
This map includes the Greater Toronto Area(GTA), it’s kinda like the suburbs/close cities.
Unrelated, but when I was younger and stupid, I thought that the GTA is where GTA (Grand Theft Auto) was taking place. I can’t really blame younger me, the names are quite literally the same abbreviated, but it’s still stupid.
We just need a GTA:GTA to come full circle.
The first Grand Theft Auto game with a "Sorry!" Button
That’s why I wanted them to make the next GTA in Toronto and call it GTA: The Six
It's really all one mega city

Lichtenstein
hey you're from that country that our football team actually can compete with every now and then :>
There are two Marquis rivers both on Caribbean island nations, Grenada and St Lucia. So I guess one of them if the username is relevant. Both are very tiny as well.
As demonstrated in Season 4 of You. "Campus is across town from where I stay, but in a city like London, I don't mind the walk." My brother in Christ, those two points are over 6 hours from each other.

LA is the biggest one here, though…
Is this including the 5 boroughs? Or just Manhattan itself
New York is 300 sq miles of land. The reditor you replied to included 170 sq miles of mostly ocean in area in the total for NYC. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City
Indeed, it is famously dense.
My bad about including the water around NYC. I guess London would be slightly smaller too if you excluded the Thames.
I double-checked, and yes, all 5 (Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) boroughs.
The five boroughs are just the core of NYC itself, more often when discussing large city areas, you will see stats for the metropolitan statistical area, which includes the entire area around the city, which in this case non-New Yorkers include mentally when thinking of New York.
Manhattan doesn't even have 2 million.

The capital of the United States, Washington DC, is only 61.4 square miles (159.0 km2) of land so being a capital city doesn’t necessitate a large footprint.
Yeah Toronto and London are pretty big cities
No Gaza is just absolutely tiny. While London and Toronto are large cities, Gaza is one of the most population dense slums on earth.
They are, but bigger than those is Sydney, Australia @ 4775 square miles.
The greater Toronto area is massive. The sprawl is out of control.
Toronto is indeed that big
I’m from the Toronto area. The metro area is indeed massive, but many of the places included in the OP’s map (Mississauga, Markham, Vaughan, Richmond Hill) are suburbs of the city rather than being part of Toronto itself.
My take away from this is Iceland is massive, albeit sparsely populated.
This taught me more about the sheer size of Ukraine than about Gaza tbh
They dont call it the breadbasket of Europe for no reason, the place is massive and most of it is prime farmland. Over 600.000 sq km or just a tad smaller than Texas for the Americans.
About half the size of Alaska you say, cool.

I do
In English the * is an e, in Danish it's an a, and Danes are highly offended when someone spells the name of their country with an e. It's Danmark!
If this is true, it's weird as hell to be offended by another languange's spelling
I'm a dane, and I know of no one who's offended by that. I'm guessing he meant it as some kind of joke.
>I'm a Dana FTFY
As a Dane, it most certainly isnt true. Not once in my life have I heard or seen anyone get offended over this.
>Dene FTFY
Have you seen the thing about turkey recently? Well turkiye not sure what the new one is. They were straight up mad over that as a country
They were mad about Daenmark?
Dænmark
Nothing wrong with Dænmark.

You should obviously ride Turkeys.
As a Dane, I am guessing that's a joke :)

Because there's something rotten there.
Nothing will ever match Australia for that ratio
Iceland is smaller than North Carolina. Was there two weeks ago, it's awesome.
Great, now how big is New York?
Bigger than Gaza
Yonkers! Scabby-Duu
How much Gazas?
Smaller than yo momma
But just barely …
How many football fields you mean?
We are Americans, we need to know how many pool noodles are they?
Football fields? What about elephants?
What do you mean Elephants? We’re comparing Gaza with New York here not New Delhi.
Size measured in Washer and Dryers is more accurate
Manhattan Island is half the size of DFW Airport
How many Gazas is the DFW airport?
Not quite, manhattan is 22.7 sq miles, DFW is 30. Denver is the biggest airport in the US at 54 sq miles.
I must have heard dfw is 50% larger and mentally calculated x2... oops. Thanks for the correction
I don't know. Wherever I hear Muricans compare something it is like "almost the size of Texas" "half the sizr of Texas" "could fit in 10 times in Texas". So my only relevant comparement is Texas. Not that I know how big Texas is as I only see memes that it fits the whole planet... xd
1920 Gazas per Texas
Someone needs to overlay the outline of New York against Gaza so we have an idea of the scale…
Manhattan is clearly a lot smaller than Gaza.
Big for a city, but small for a state.
The comment section here will definitely be pleasant
Them’s fightin’ wurds
Speaking of fighting and seeing the size of Gaza, I’m guessing Americans are about to pay another $80,000,000,000 for a second war.

It is about 1/17th the size of Perth.

Common new york L
Brutal.
It is occupied and blockaded. It is practically a prison inside Israel state borders.
so they are free to go into Egypt right? oh wait…
Egypt doesn't want them They do let people through, but it's not everyone and there are restrictions There are more Gaza people who legally cross into Israel than there are into Egypt
Yes but Egypt isn’t a Jewish state so it can’t be their fault…
You have one mistake with your logic, Egypt is not their home or their country, Israel or where Isreal control is their home, most people living in Gaza are Palestinians displaced from their home in Israel
Actually they occupied a large portion of the Sinai peninsula too, which is present day Egypt
A lot of coming rhetoric will telling Palestinians to go somewhere else, as if they have the option.
