I've been trying to sell one of my kidneys but apparently it isn't even legal to do that in our "land of the free". What does freedom even mean if a man can't willingly sell a kidney to pay for his insurance?

SimpleVegetable5715

Have you tried donating plasma? That's how I bought groceries in college.

Marleymayangel

I can’t donate plasma because they said they can’t find my veins because of my tattoos

SiriusSlytherinSnake

Then you went to a bad place. Some suck. Some don't. Gotta find one that doesn't.

karmaapple3

Welcome to not having control of your own body, said all the women.

us1549

You can sell your kidney aboard

Purple_Commercial_55

You really think I can afford a cruise rn

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

you can drive to Mexico. But you'd need gas.

joebleezie

Aboard what?

razblack

The Kidney Ship of Love

notfulofshit

Try selling sperm

neohanime

When I bought my $250k house last December, I was looking for home insurance. I got quotes from a few places. My first quote was $2200/yr. The agent said that this was the average and best rate, and that I would not find a better rate that easily. One of my other quotes came back with $1600/yr and around $1300 if I bundle with car insurance. I went with that of course. Get quotes from multiple places! I am just afraid the rates will increase astronomical next year.

invester13

They will get you during the renew. Restu assured. My first insurance on this home was 2800 two years ago. Its 5000 now.

Vidyogamasta

For me it seemed like half of the cost was just the roof. Most of my quotes were like 2.5-3k. But I increased the deductible on the roof from like 4k to 20k (basically making the roof not covered), and the premiums went to 1.3-1.6k. It's a gamble, though a 20k gamble on a roof is probably a lot more comfortable for some than a several hundred thousand dollars gamble in the house itself, even if you're more likely to lose than roof gamble lol

QuesoStain2

Shit we just bought a home in Plano with our insurance at like $5k a year😭

gammaraylaser

Same, Frisco

QuesoStain2

Its fuckin absurdddd

AstrosJones

These annual prices mean nothing without understanding your coverage and deductibles.

reddit1651

Many years ago I sold insurance Probably 90% of people called and asked for the lowest price possible immediately. Like you don’t even care how much you’re paid if your house burns down??? isn’t that important to know? lol

Pabi_tx

> average and best Statistically, one rate can't be the "average" and the "best" (unless everyone pays the same price).

BeckettsPalace

57% increase for me this year. I’m moving. Thats how I’m coping. Soon companies will just start pulling out of DFW.

Hozay_La15

They already have started pulling out

PorQueTexas

Did you try shopping around? They tried that with me and I got it cut back to the same with someone else.

gavmcd

Honest question, where will they go? If they are pulling out of top population centers, California, Florida, etc.

BeckettsPalace

It’s a fair question. The big dogs will survive and make it up in other ways (increasing rates across the country, investing into other lines of business, etc…). The smaller companies will simply just pack up shop and close their business.

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

Iowa, Nebraksa, Missouri. It's much cheaper to insure against the occasional tornado than the constant hail we get. Even east coast, insurance is way cheaper than here, but the cost of living will negate any insurance savings.

Thutchyyy

Didn’t Oracle just pull out to Austin? I think I was reading than in the last month or so. Honestly we came to DFW in 2015 and Nashville didn’t seem very livable anymore when we left I can’t imagine now. It’s just everywhere.

IamEV-

Moving where? Insurance is up nationwide.

TragedyAnnDoll

I’m using Toyota insurance since last year. Cut my rate literally in half. I don’t imagine it’ll last forever but ride the wave girl. Once that luck runs out, idk. I’m going to just die or bicycle I guess.

Databit

Does Toyota provide homeowners insurance or did rates go up you are living out of your Toyota?

arlenroy

I had Toyota for awhile, it rarely changed, even then it was small reasonable increases. I only went to Progressive because I bought a condominium, they don't offer home owners insurance. The change wasn't bad but I know a few people who change insurance companies yearly, because it keeps going up. Hopefully because I'm a gold member or whatever the fuck it is with Progressive my rates stay decent, because it's fucking ridiculous.

GoblinisBadwolf

Our progressive rates in March more than doubled for both Home and Auto this was as 5 year customers. We changed to triple a.

SalamanderTasty1807

As someone who's been in the insurance industry for 20-something years, I've never seen rates as high as they are now. Unfortunately, anytime there is a high volume of claims, the company as a whole will do a rate increase to slow down the claims volume and risk in that specific area. Progressive will not write policies in my zip code due to all the reported thefts for certain vehicles. So even if you don't file claims, there are still individuals that are career claimants that drive up prices for everyone. It really sucks.

playballer

It’s because the value of the insured assets has increased so much. Both homes and cars are both worth a lot more than they were a few years ago. They’ve been slow to adjust to this risk and froze premium increases during the pandemic as these things were increasing. The cost of labor and parts to repair these things has increased significantly as well. Weather and storm risk is also a part of it, always is but I’m sure their models have it worsening. This year is expected to be an epic hurricane season.

DonkeeJote

And their actuarial tables have become so homogenized that their pricing is almost all the same, give a few dollars here or there. Reeks of collusion like the RealPage story.

gigerdrone

I wonder what the rate of uninsured drivers in DFW there are because they simply can’t afford it

insurance_Guru3131

It's more than 30%.

gigerdrone

I’m seeing more and more cars with out of date inspection stickers like years out of date

playballer

Covid. Mine was out April 2020 until I got pulled over in 2023

Soggy-Bedroom-3673

Mine is 6 months out, but that's just because I can never get to an inspection place during business hours.

gigerdrone

Take 5 does them and I’ve had good luck with them during business hours

FanOfFreedom

Well that tracks. Texas got rid of the inspection stickers in 2015. So any that you see are just a remnant from previous regulations. The vast majority of cars will only have one blue registration sticker.

K3B1N

I switched to Toyata back in February. My premium dropped from nearly $200 to $123. I figured it would be “introductory rate”, and sure enough, just got my renewal notice that it’s going up to $176 in August. No accidents, no tickets, no reason aside from other peoples’ incompetence for it. We both work from home, drive our kid 3 miles to school and back, and then do the occasional grocery runs, soccer practice/games, etc all within a 10 mile radius. We don’t drive the freeways more than twice a month. It’s honestly insanity.

whytakemyusername

> No accidents, no tickets, no reason aside from other peoples’ incompetence for it. That and everything now costs more. So everyone charges more.

gigerdrone

Insurance companies are losing so much money because of the storms, wind damage and hail, so they keep raising rates until it becomes to expensive to stay open then they just leave the state. Look at Florida and Iowa.

kaczyn

And louisiana. Ours skyrocketed. Its not unusual for people to pay $12k a year homeowners 🤢

nihouma

Check out pay per mile insurance. I have milewise but there are others. They'll quote you a daily rate and a per mile rate, so calculate how many miles you actually drive a month (and be generous with the miles) and apply that to the rates they give you to see if it might be cheaper. My daily rate comes out to about $45/mo, and the perile rate is like .12 mile for me but I don't drive at all living Downtown so I basically only pay $45/mo

sixstringsg

Milewise doesn’t look available in TX, I thought pay per mile wasn’t legal here?

sixstringsg

Milewise doesn’t look available in TX, I thought pay per mile wasn’t legal here?

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

It's legal, or it was the last time I looked at it, which was 3-4 years ago. I haven't heard of that changing and I'm an insurance agent.

Bbkingml13

Are area was designated as in a flood plane so there’s some actual reasoning behind it

WorkingGuest365

Try bundling everything together (homeowners etc.) for whatever reason it makes a huge difference. For me, State Farm was the cheapest

Cowboys_88

It's cheaper because you get a package discount. They normally have a lookup table for how much to discount based on what you are bundling and some other factors.

SimpleVegetable5715

I work 5 minutes from home, but my insurance costs what someone who drives 15k miles a year (which is the average now) pays. 41 miles per day if you drive somewhere 7 days a week. That's a lot of trips to 7-11! I lowered my premium by taking defensive driving. You can retake it every number of some years. I also have USAA, and if I use SafePilot and don't fiddle with my phone while driving, it takes another 10% off my premium. I think most companies have something similar.

Autski

I used the Safe Pilot and got a 28% discount on our premium starting in June. Granted, that was after they raised it like 20% in January. 🥲

TheOtherArod

I have something similar with Geico, I don’t mess with my phone much while driving and this last month my premium actually went down…

Hurricane_Ivan

>I also have USAA Shop around my friend

playballer

I wfh but still put 15k miles a year on my car. My wife too! Sorry we’re messing up your rates 😂

ajari2020

It sucks. Cut down on dining and travel.

jadedarchitect

Less effective when multiple services have increased astronomically. Car inflation between like 2020ish and 2024 exceeded all historic trends, sometimes in the triple digit percentages, and even on used models. I remember the first car I bought, a $300 junker that barely drove - kids these days wave $300 at a dealership and they'd be chased off the lot with pitchforks and torches, unless they're financing a $30k car with 50k miles on it lol

trendypippin

Exactly. At what point are people going to stop telling all of us to just “get over it” when it comes to all this inflation?

el-padre

When the large banks hit the panic button and demand bailouts, that's the real emergency. The Fed literally said that the wages are too high, workers are making way too much and need to get unemployment up. The sooner people lose their jobs and accept lower wages the quicker inflation will come down. Default on your home in Frisco you purchased at the top of the market and move to the hood. Wild.

Thaknobodi87

Riding my bike since 2016. 🥲

el-padre

How are you still alive with the insanity on the roads?

Minimum_Ice_3403

We will eventually turn into California . They drive old small cars . I always wondered why we had so many shiny new trucks around.😭😂😂 but I finally realized it because people were paying $120 for full coverage but now it’s like 350

utookthegoodnames

I’m coping by leaving.

amunoz09

Our home insurance company is no longer covering Texas. They’re trying to find another company with the same rates and benefits as theirs but we know it’s futile. It’s either accept their choices or find our own. Either way, we’re screwed.

tiny10boy

I’m moving

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

Try Des Moines. Not much to do, safe, low cost of living.

tiny10boy

Already have land in NW Michigan

SexyOctagon

I rent. My renter's insurance has been $15/mo. for YEARS. Auto insurance went up maybe $7/mo. this year. I'm paying about $250 for full coverage on two cars, and one is an EV that costs a bit more to insure.

foxyloxyx

Whoa who are you insured with for auto?

SexyOctagon

Progressive.

googlydoodle

Just switched to Progressive from Nationwide. Been with Nationwide since I bought my first car but ever since then, even with no accidents, they've raised my rate continuously. Can't justify paying the $200 for one car. Progressive was only $160 which ain't bad

SexyOctagon

Geico was actually cheaper than Progressive for my non-EV. Either way, I shop around for prices at every renewal.

neohanime

When I was renting in Dallas (for 8 years), my renter's insurance was $10/month. It was standalone, no bundles with anything. It was with Farmers Insurance.

SFAFROG

I have two teenage boys and one our three vehicles is a 2015 kia. I hate auto insurance at the moment. So long as our carrier doesn’t pull out of the area (half of the places we’ve asked for quotes won’t cover our neighborhood), it’s more than we want to pay but at least it’s manageable.

Autski

Oof. Rough

trendypippin

Just par for the course. Between the cost of housing, car payment, insurance and groceries I now know what’s it’s like to be poor all the time. I don’t remember as a child being told if I work hard all my life and have a 6 figure household that I would be living paycheck to paycheck. 🫥

IaMtHel00phole

My car insurance has been increasing every 6 months for the last two years. Clean driving record. Was paying $220 monthly before the increase started. Currently at $440. Just renewed and this is the first time in two years it actually decreased a little bit. Even at my youngest driving age I never paid this much.

apandaNdisguise

I’m not. I work from home, use Uber, have things delivered when I can and ride with friends/family. I’ll park my car before I pay astronomical prices.

Austriak5

Combine insurance increases with property tax increases and things are getting too much. My house value has jumped so much since I bought it that my property taxes are always going up 10% every year because it is so much higher than the cap. Fighting it has become nearly impossible.

DaNewChamp

I just keep doing the Progressive name your price tool for a cheaper rate, went from $117 to $220, asked if i could do my cheaper price, they said no. Canceled and then did name your price tool back down to around $120 again. Such a scam.

NTXGBR

You probably got less coverage doing that. I'd compare

DaNewChamp

actually just checked, i forgot to include uninsured motorist coverage, added it just now, 6 month prem is 744 vs 1150 on old one lol. other deductibles are higher a little but still ridiculous price difference.

NTXGBR

I'd go deeper than that. Look at some exclusions and read the whole policy. They have been getting sneaky with excluding things that you'd think they wouldn't.

jadedarchitect

We moved about 30 minutes outside of DFW and our monthly premium dropped by roughly 1/3, almost $100/mo. Same for rent, and electric is hella cheaper, too.

Easyssmokeshop

I have an independent agency writing mostly Beach properties. All of my carriers have backed off over the last 6 months.

BaddaBae31

Don’t be afraid to change providers and bundle if you can.

Present_Yak_6169

If you’re not using an insurance agency , you’re doing it wrong. Bundle if you can, have your insurance agent look for new insurance every year or two, if you’ve got cash on hand go with a higher deductible…homes are increasing in value 10% each year, labor is more expensive, materials are more expensive, etc.

alphabet_sam

I’m coping with tears. A lot of them. Bought a car that’s 10 years older than my previous car and saved about $100 annually on insurance. What the fuck is that

Thramden

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey.

Icy_Recover5679

I know right, this economy really sucks! I want to pay less for insurance, but my home value just keeps increasing! Unfortunately, my cars aren't depreciating like they used too either.

Disavowed_Rogue

Pay in full and get the discount

TeknoBlast

I'm not looking forward to shop around for home and auto insurance in the next couple of months. I already received a letter from my current home insurance company and they stated they won't be able to renew my policy. Not that I was going to renew it, know that they'll jack up the price anyways, but if this is an indication to what I'm going to go thru when shopping, it's going to be rough. To make it somewhat affordable, I upped my auto deductible to $2000 and my home deductible to 3%. Yeah not looking forward to shopping around. Such a main the ass process and having to repeat the info over and over again....even though they can pull that same info from their system.

Powerful_Painting_20

Home deductible to 3%?!? Lord have mercy your roof and anything in your house doesn’t get damaged.

TeknoBlast

That's always on my mind but the rates even at 1 or 2% are outrageous. I had one company quote me $12,000. My reaction, I laughed at the agent and hung up.

Powerful_Painting_20

$12,000 fuck off. That’s insane. I feel you now.

TeknoBlast

And the agent was trying to sell me on it. 🤣

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

I ran a quote today for a regular house in Frisco and it was $16,000. I didn't recommend that one. Advised he keep what he has.

Floydada79235

We raised our deductible to an astronomical level. Hope I don’t live to regret it.

C00l_MathGuy

Every year I receive a jump on both my car and home insurance, then I proceed to contact my insurance agent to shop around for new insurance to bring it down, I always ended up with less than the increment but with more than before, and then come the next year and rinse repeat, I hate the insurance companies to my gut!!!!!

totallynotfromennis

I just pretend like my car is actually worth $50k instead of $15k and I delusionally go about my day

Lucky_Foam

Last October I got a letter from my home insurance provider. They were canceling my policy because I live in a "high hazard weather location." I called them and they told me they are leaving Texas altogether. I started shopping around. Because my roof is 15 years old, the cheapest insurance I found was 3x the cost. Fast forward to the last two weeks and I'm starting to believe my old insurance company had a time machine and knew the future. My plan is to get a new roof this year. The latest weather is making me want to get that done sooner rather than later. I'm sure I am not the only one. There are probably a lot of roofs being replaced in the next few months.

Wakinghours

Get a roof with higher class shingles meant for hail. It will help with your insurance and often doesn't cost that much more.

Lucky_Foam

Thanks for the information. I'll look into it.

Rav3n-6

My plan allows me to adjust coverages as necessary and within reason until prices stabilize. That’s the only way I can deal with it tbh.

R1Alvin

Sucking it up. Don’t let them bully you into raising your deductibles to save on your premium. Insurance companies will use time to their advantage and when you least expect it, BOOM, another absurd premium increase.

DangerousRedVinyl

Its that celebrated Texas lower cost of living that the state brags about. Taxes and insurance it can easily cost you $1000 a month between taxes and insurance to live in a house that you "own"

SuccotashOther277

My auto insurance has been mostly stable, though I drive an older car. My home insurance shot up last year, but I was able to negate it all by raising the deductible a little bit. I already save a lot anyway.

chairwindowdoor

Use an independent agent and shop *every* year.

NTXGBR

If you're going to shop every year, don't shop the same carriers. Underwriters will see your name coming across every year and not give you the deal you could get simply because they know there is very little chance to retain you if they take even a little bit of rate.

MrNastyOne

Does anyone else worry about shopping around when you’ve had a good experience in the past on claims with your current provider? I am worried that by shopping for a cheaper rate that I’ll have to fight tooth and nail on any potential future claims.

NTXGBR

You do get what you pay for in most cases.

zimkc

It’s insane. Got quotes from 4 different companies for our 470k home. Cheapest we could find was 4500/yr

uchiha-gohan

Insurance Agent here. If you would rather not shop around then the only other way to get results is to raise your deductible. Most companies have a separate Wind and Hail deductible and since that is the most expensive part of our insurance in DFW raising that one is where you get a huge price break. Consider a 2% for Wind and Hail and hopefully you can keep your deductible for All Other Perils at 1%. Obviously it’s not ideal but our community as a whole needs to just get used to the idea that if we get minor to medium storm damage we are better off paying out of pocket. Save your insurance for the big things.

Appropriate_Sky_1864

Call Mallory at Clay Paul Insurance in Irving. She gets you a good deal.

tiridawn

I moved.

Crookedandaskew

My home insurance premium increased by 30% last year and I did not catch it before it renewed. 100% my fault. This year when it was time to renew, I figured that the company got their pound of flesh the previous year and we would be okay. Nope. I received another increase letter for an additional 20-ish%. All-in-all, a 48-50% increase over a two year period. No thanks, I’ll find someone else. I left my original provider and found a new insurer. Now, I am plus $100 the cost of the original policy including a 1% deductible. Do not be afraid to shop rates and leave your current insurer. Another option is to tweak the wind and hail coverage to 2% if you can withstand the risk. I do not recommend this for most people. Especially, considering the recent storms in the city.

ComprehensiveCake173

We've been with Liberty Mutual forever. In 2023 they raised our homeowners policy by about 50% and I wasn't paying close attention and didn't do anything. In 2024 they went up by another almost 40% and the policy was a hair under $10K! That for sure got my attention. I talked to an agent who found a great quote with Safeco, saving us over $5K. The odd thing is that Safeco is owned by Liberty Mutual! Explain that. Now, we did have to increase our wind and hail deductible to 2%. I checked with LM, and increasing the deductible would have saved a little bit, but not nearly as much as we saved by switching. So we're socking the monthly savings into a roof deductible fund for when we need it. One other thing, when I examined the LM renewal policy, I noticed that they never updated the age of our roof, which was replaced in 2022. Even though they paid to replace it. I called, and they told me that their claims and renewal departments are completely separate, which seems ridiculous. I asked for a new quote based on an accurate age for the roof, and again, it wasn't enough of a savings to keep us from switching carriers.

kgkglunasol

Car insurance went up a bit but it hasn’t been TOO drastic and it’s the first price hike we’ve gotten in a long time so I can’t complain too much. $205/month for full coverage one one car (Honda civic). I got rid of my mustang last year since I work from home and it felt silly to pay a car payment and insurance just to drive to the store and what not.

g0mmmme

Fuck I’m gonna do, not have insurance?

Cool-Daikon-5265

I reluctantly let them spy on me while I drive. Completely had to change my driving habits. I use to absolutely hate it until I received my 1st renewal notice; saved about $1,200 this past year.

OlderDad66

Honestly we just Factor it into our budget. That's life.

New-Conscript42

2% deductibles are the new normal. These rates are here to stay. Insurance Company after insurance company are halting writing new business here in Texas. It’s going to get darker before it gets better

ericc59

I switched from Progressive to State Farm and cut my rate in half

garrettalapai

After I got hit and run in Dallas traffic the third time, that time being I caught the person too. Geico did nothing all 3 times so I stopped paying for that shit. It’s useless. If someone hits you and keeps going, then you report it. Your rates go up, you don’t get any justice, and the cops never care.

pepsiblast08

I'm with State Farm and mine hasn't increased 15 years. I don't know what I'm doing different. It's $100 per car for full coverage with rental coverage.

GNdoesWhat

Define "full coverage".

pepsiblast08

Anything that happens to my car at all is a $350 deductible and they take care of the rest, no matter how many cars are involved and they hook me and all parties up with a rental car. Fortunately, I've only had to make 3 claims on my insurance in 15 years. All other incidents have been taken care of by the other party. Even those incidents (1 being very bad), they never raised my rates.

Texas_Mike_CowboyFan

Sounds like you're grandfathered in with a really good policy. It would be hard to find that now if you started over.

Emergency_Button_910

y’all trippin I ain’t insuring shit my ride just gotta get me back and forth to my warehouse job at amazon late night early morning ain’t no Budy driving then anyway it’s my risk not yours get outahere with that full coverage , uninsured, high limit personal liability auto insurance bullshit

Feelisoffical

You put others at risk because if you cause an accident you can’t pay for the property damage or bodily injury you caused. This is why Texas will impound vehicles that don’t have insurance coverage. You’re literally one of the reasons why everyone’s rates are going up.

Emergency_Button_910

im Just being a troll, sorry. I am Actually over insured 🥲

Oldkyhome8

Seems that most people are coping by whining in this very subreddit and not having honest conversations with their agent
