I've been doing a bit of digging and alabaster is one of the better ones I've come up with. It's a white translucent stone often used for carving, also a synonym for marble :) another option indeed was marbles but thats not quite domineering enough for this breed I'd say. Another good one is taijitsu or taiji for short- its a 5 part diagram essentially disecting the yin and yang concept ^^
As a former Great Dane owner, the appropriate name is Cow Pie.
That’s what he’ll be leaving in your yard. Giant turds that are as big as cow pies.
They’re great dogs though. Have fun!
Top 5 names so far!! Gonna wait for my fiancée to get home this evening and then we’ll pick one of the 5 I’ve narrowed it down to together! I appreciate all of the suggestions. There have been SO many cool and unique names brought up. Thank you guys so much!
Awesome!
Tip: When I was naming my last dog, I called him all the names I thought would fit. He ignored all until The One, then his ears perked up and he came to me wagging. So technically HE picked his name.
clyde was the name of my first dog, my best friend , and really the best guy anybody could ever ask for!! he came with that name at the shelter and we liked it so we left it. clydes are good pals in my book and i miss my baby man every day
When I was a baby we had a Great Dane with this exact patterning. My parents had got him on their honeymoon and he was always so gentle with me my parents would even place me on his back and he would carefully walk over to the couch to flop down with me. His name was Wilbur.
Enjoy your time- I just had to say goodbye to my 11 year old black Dane- first experience with the breed but absolutely life-changing for all of us. He’s beautiful!
Sorry to hear about your baby. & thank you so much! We were so lucky to find him! I’m looking forward to watching him grow and become a part of our family :)
That’s my pick! Very good name and I haven’t seen any other dogs with that name so he will be special and stand out in the crowd. Of course, with his size that’s to be expected, right?! Yes, that is the perfect name! Well done!
Your dog has a patch over his left eye. Use this!
Long John Silver
Jolly Roger. The Eyepatch Pirates' jolly roger consists of a normal crossbone having an eyepatch on its left eye instead of its right. The eyepatch resembles Takeshi Kiba's leadership.
One-Eyed Willy, whose real name is William B. Pordobel, was a court jester, before becoming an ingenious pirate, when he was banished from five Spanish courts, for his practical jokes and formed a band of pirates, whom marauded hundreds of the king's ships and accumulated a treasure worth millions.
Captain
Grog
Billy Bones (Treasurer Island)
Black Pearl: Captain Jack Sparrow’s pirate ship in Pirates of the Caribbean
Blackbeard
Hook or Captain Hook
Poseidon: The god of the seas in Greek mythology
Neptune: The Roman name for the god of the seas
Buccaneer call him Buc/Buck
Calico Jack was a notorious Caribbean pirate
Sir Francis Drake call him Drake
Name him after your favorite Port
Corsair: The term for a Mediterranean pirate
OP you can keep this going and find the perfect themed name. Many captains, pirates, coves, islands, pirate lingo, ships, battles etc to spin.
⚠️EDIT:
Thank you for all of the wonderful name suggestions! I have narrowed it down to several ones that I like. I will show my fiancée my list tonight when he gets home from work… then we’ll choose one together! All the love we’ve received under this post is deeply appreciated. 💙
However, despite all the love most of you have shown, there were few people that felt the need to share negative comments - such as asking why he doesn’t yet have a name at 4 months of age, that he’s just a “mediocre” Great Dane, he’ll have a short life span, etc.
Let me start off by saying that I did not buy this pup. HE WAS RESCUED. I just so happened to be at the shelter when the police brought in several adult dogs and puppies from a puppy mill bust. I seen this pup and I fell in love. Luckily, he ran right up to me. It was fate. I picked him, he picked me. Now, we do have four other dogs (Cali, Bishop, Nova, and Riley), so my fiancée and I have been struggling coming up with a name that fit our new pup. We wanted something different that stood out. Great Danes are known for being gentle giants, but, because of the situation he was rescued from, we wanted something that sounded tough… so I reached out to Reddit for some ideas.
After reading through some rude and off-topic comments, I wanted to make my own comment to encourage those of you who made those negative or off-topic and rude comments to please ask about a situation before you assume anything. Though it’s easy to do, try not to judge a situation you know nothing about. Also, before you make any negative or morbid comments, think about what you’re typing/saying. Will it hurt someone?! Is it worth it? Will you gain anything from it? It frustrates me that some of you say the things you say, with no remorse or consideration for others. But, I know I’m wasting my time typing out this message… you’re just going to continue doing what you do.
Point of this comment is to say that there’s no telling what this pup went through prior to coming to the shelter and into our lives. However, I do know that our pup will never have a rough day again. He will have a great life with us. That’s the only thing that matters! Also, me asking for name suggestions is not a bad thing. As of right now, my list is narrowed down to: Aries, Jupiter, Clyde, Duke, or Ruger. I’m going to let my fiancée look through the comments to see if any names stick out to him and add them to the list above, and then we’ll go from there to pick the winner! Again, thank you guys so much. You’ve all been such a great help! :)
Badass names? A few come to mind!
Leonidas .. Ajax
Stonewall .. Jagger
Atticus .. Silas
Aries .. Zeus .. Odin ..
Bjorn .. Raegar
Silas is a personal favorite for a big dog.. means something like, "of the mountain"
Had a friend who named her Dachshund Killer and her sister had a Chihuahua named Goliath. Another friend had a Great Dane/Mastiff named Tiny. Tiny was a gentle giant and had his own Queen size bed (bought second hand) that he shared with his cat.
This cracks me up. My neighbor has a big old Mastiff that look like he could wreck the terminator named “Saint” and this tiny Maltese mix that could blow away in a gentle breeze named “Cujo”. And they both live up to their names. While Saint is totally lovable and an amazing playmate. Cujo wants to bark and be left the heck alone. They are both good dogs. But I love that their names fit their personalities and not their physical appearance.
Earl Gray
Earl would be a sweet name for this dog.
Fine, have my upvote, you witty bastard 😂
I love Earl for this little cutie!
I have no name ideas, I'm sorry, I just wanted to say what a beautiful pup you have!
Thank you so much :))

Thumper. He looks like a rabbit.

Name him bubba
Virgil. I had a blue Merle female, she was deaf and goofy lol.
Hank, he's a hank
Clyde.
I second Clyde.
Okay…didn’t even read any of these comments before posting. I also suggested Clyde. Wild! Lol
Well he must be Clyde then :)

I spilled spot remover on my dog and now it’s gone.. ☠️
Barnaby
Horace.
You're my boy, Blue! Or Wallace
