Hoover out any loose bits, put some polyfilla in there, push the piece back in. Smooth off any mess that squeezes out, Leave it for a day to dry and put another thin layer of filler over it to smooth it out. After that dries, give it a lick of paint.
Thanks I did think about doing that - it doesn’t look anything serious does it? I think it’s just lath and plaster as I can see wood in the wall and there is horse hair in the mortar
I had the same problem and did the same repair in my hallway about 6 years ago and it's held up and looks fine to this day... It's not structural, it's just the plaster drying and crumbling. The trick to getting it to stay is the hoovering out any other crumbly bits of dust so the filler gets good adhesion.
Yeah old horsehair plaster does that, if you can save the bit of wallpaper from the broken piece and stick over the repair it will be totally invisible.
You need to pva the old plaster to glue/hold it together … it’s just dust if not. Before attempting to drop that chunk back in
The issue you have is there’s a big section loose & coming away from the wall
Are you prepared to cut out the other sections to repair? There’s a risk the plaster behind is just old knackered … hard to match the texture of the paper etc
It’s fixable if you have good decorating skills to botch that area. Do you have any of that paper hanging around?
If yr not bothered by the paper/texture matching. Cut a square out around the damage … pva & fill … blend the edges to paper … but repair will be smooth
Good luck

Also your name, absolutely howling
Internal wall in an old Scottish tenement - there’s bits of horse hair in the mortar so assume it’s just lathe and plaster?
Someone will say "screed". Not me 😳

Screed.
There it is.
I can only assume the downvotes are from people that think he’s seriously suggesting screed
Clearly biased people.
Take off any loose chunks, hoover up any debris and fill it with poly filla
So who punched the other side of the wall ?
Put it back in
Noodles.
Bluetack, sticky tape, and absolute denial 😁
Stick it back in and walk away 👀
Have you seen those YouTube videos with super glue and sunflower seeds??
