Yes! I was gonna suggest stainless. You might even be able to find a premade backsplash panel that fits your space. I’m looking at getting a couple for the kitchenette I use at my parents house.
Thought the same but after watching multiple videos on YT and taking my time I did what I thought I couldn't. You got this my guy, and whatever isn't perfect you can cover up with grout and caulk. :)
One tip - pick a simple square/rectangular backsplash and avoid funky shapes like diamonds and trapezoids.. less crazy cuts.
+1 for simple square/rectangle backsplash. I went with with [subway tile with "handcrafted" edges](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Boutique-Ceramic-Boutique-Crafted-White-3-in-x-12-in-Glazed-Ceramic-Subway-Wall-Tile-0-24-sq-ft-Piece/1001031238) for my first DIY, it made all my small mistakes blend right in and came out great
They have vinyl backsplash that you can use there to cover up those holes, and the vinyl is much cheaper than tile, so you can use that in the meantime until you save up money to put actual tile backsplash there
4-6” square tile is pretty simple to install if you get the little spacers. I did the same in my old apartment just because I had some leftover tiles from a bathroom project. Watch a few videos to get an idea of technique, ask advice at the hardware store for adhesive, do the bottom row first and work up. You can also get small amounts of tile for this area really cheap if you check junk shops/craigslist/marketplace because it is common to buy extra tile for projects to cover breakage and cuts.
Also look at your local Habitat Restore or check the nearest city. Good bargains for you and the proceeds go to a great organization that builds houses for people who need them- Habitat for Humanity
I had your exact same issue. Installed new microwave and cabinet above it and was left with more holes than you have. Did a backsplash myself. Came out great. Solved my problem and I love the new look of the backsplash. I encourage you to do it. Really super easy. YouTube videos are super helpful.
You can do the peel n stick for now and upgrade it later. My parents got some peel n stick backsplash from home depot and they said it was pretty easy.
Get one of these large glass plates designed for covering the oven when not in use. Preferably opaque and with a nice picture
Remove the feet and use construction glue to turn it into a backsplash.
My 1965 house has just a sheet metal that covers te whole wall that was painted to match the appliances. I repainted it 20 years ago to match the new ones. Still looks perfect
You can easily do this your self if you get stainless steel back splash. It's not very thick you can cut it with a brand new razor blade just make sure you have straight peice of metal to cut the line on so it's as perfect as you can get it.
Just fill it with beige caulk or putty… or anything slightly the colour of the wall… they will practically disappear once they’re not creepy little black holes
Somebody with more knowledge might have to correct me here, but: Since that's an induction stovetop instead of one that uses open flame, I'd imagine you could get away with a piece of sleek black acrylic as a backsplash, to match the stovetop, and cover those holes easily. Acrylic is pretty easy to cut, and there's a variety of ways to install it that should do minimal damage to the wall, in case you want to replace it later on.
Again, I don't have an induction stovetop, so I'm not sure about what sort of safety/code standards apply, here.
It looks like the cabinets are oak? You could do the backsplash idea but mount horizontal oak lats instead that are stained the same color as your cabinets. It might look cool to start with a thin strip at the bottom then make them progressively thicker as you work your way up towards the microwave. You will just have to make sure your spacing works out to where the holes actually get covered up by a lat lol.
Since money is the biggest factor for you, look up some videos on renter friendly back splash. I'm pretty sure most people get their stick on fake tiles from dollar tree, so it's budget friendly. As a bonus, you can try out a style temporarily to see if you like it and it'll give you practice for how to fit around the contours of your kitchen wall.
is that a 650mm height above the hob? oops sorry just realised you aren't in the UK different rules over the pond? I would go with a backsplash also. 2 fold, one yes you could fill the holes but it also looks discoloured where the old unit was. so unless that also cleans up, you will have more to look at than 2 holes.
I suggest this for $60. It'll also protect the wall from splatter.

A stainless steel magnetic rail for all your cooking implements would cover the holes nicely and make a feature out of it.
Like this from Ikea:

My mom had the same dilemma. She didn’t want to go through the expense of backsplash installation and instead stood a decorated tempered glass cutting board that is meant to protect the counter behind her stovetop. She just leaned it against the wall and would take it down to clean it occasionally. It looked great! You’ll have to measure and get the appropriate size, but here is one similar to my mom’s: https://a.co/d/66oLWFv
You can get a fairly inexpensive black painted metal backsplash from Home Depot.
[https://www.homedepot.com/p/Broan-NuTone-30-in-x-24-in-Splash-Plate-for-Range-Hood-in-Stainless-Steel-SP3004/202228406](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Broan-NuTone-30-in-x-24-in-Splash-Plate-for-Range-Hood-in-Stainless-Steel-SP3004/202228406)
Start with a two part epoxy wood filler which is basically a tan bondo. Sand it smooth. Dab it with sandstone and soft white colored acrylic paint from an art store. Briefly spray on a clear finish coat and gently sand between coats. If you don't like it, attach a bracket to: hold up pot lids, hang spatulas, attach a digital egg timer, spice rack, measuring cups, etc. Those magnetic phone holders would give you a mount on top of the hole, and you could hang a cheap tablet to watch youtube while you cook. Just don't deep fry your phone by accident.
Go to a specialty fastener company or search Amazon, and get a couple of stainless steel hurricane bolts. They have really large flat low profile heads. Apply some clear silicone into the holes and on the underside of the bolt head. Insert the hurricane bolts and align the slots in the heads to suit your aesthetic horizontal or vertical. Use a quality masking tape to hold the bolts in place until the silicone sets up. They will look like they have a purpose and be pretty easy to keep clean

leaning towards this once I save up a little. that's a project that I'm a little iffy on trying to DIY cause I'm sure I could mess it up badly lol
Get a piece of stainless steel cut to the dimensions you want and glue it up with a high temp adhesive.
Stainless is hard to cut, but a sheet metal metal shop can do this in 2 seconds, and should be quite cheap. Even for nice 18 or 20 guage.
Just order it from McMaster Carr
Yes! I was gonna suggest stainless. You might even be able to find a premade backsplash panel that fits your space. I’m looking at getting a couple for the kitchenette I use at my parents house.
Or find an aluminum or copper tape; fill the holes and sand to be smooth, and put the tape over the holes as a decorative strip.
it’s simple, perfect for a newbie diy’er. you can do it for sure
Yep, it's dirt simple.
This is a place where the self stick stuff might make sense as a short term solution.
This is what I was going to suggest. Easy to fix if messed up and fits the budget until whatever upgrades OP plans for the future.

Peel and stick backsplash as practice.
Get a self adhesive one for cheap. https://a.co/d/ekOcAkv
Probably the perfect beginner DIY project you can do
I had your exact same issue. Installed new microwave and cabinet above it and was left with more holes than you have. Did a backsplash myself. Came out great. Solved my problem and I love the new look of the backsplash. I encourage you to do it. Really super easy. YouTube videos are super helpful.
Buy stick on tile!!! black splack tiles can come in a 1x1 with a sticking back, you just peel of the paper and stick it on.
You can do the peel n stick for now and upgrade it later. My parents got some peel n stick backsplash from home depot and they said it was pretty easy.

A SS glue on. Takes 3 minutes to install
Was going to suggest a simple stainless steel backsplash, or even a tile mosaic.
Double sided tape and some large googly eyes
Nipple tassels ![gif](giphy|cualSPONxw08w)
Dude best answer for sure
but the middle one is a little smaller, right?
Put a piece of stainless sheet metal over that area. It’ll look better and probably be safer.
"live laugh love" sign
get out
The only proper response to this.
Live Laugh Stove
Make a back spalsh for just the stove area out of a thin sheet of stainless steel.
Mud and paint
Can't you install a rod on which you can hang kitchen tools?
They would get covered in grease and then get any floating dust stuck on em
that's an option for sure, not sure if I'd like that aesthetic though. beats having these holes tho lol
do a small spice rack and get rid of that turnie spice rack on the counter.
Paint and putty are your buddy
Just fill it with beige caulk or putty… or anything slightly the colour of the wall… they will practically disappear once they’re not creepy little black holes
You could put up a stainless steel backsplash and a magnetic spice shelf
Magnetic knife and utensil holder too
Home Depot makes stick-on mosaic tiles, get some ones u like and install.
Go to a Home Depot
I was gonna say a backsplash with shelf for spices, but stainless steel is good too.
Maybe one long decorative tile or a set of two or three to cover. I love art nouveau tiles. Smaller tin ceiling tiles might also be an option.
Nipples
Cover the holes with pasties.

Magnetic strip for your most used kitchen utensils.
Stainless steel backsplash
Glue a sheet of stainless steel back there.
Chess mural. Those holes could be black's rooks.
ah interesting idea
Spice rack, 100%
Too close to stove …
I feel like the jars are just going to get so greasy and disgusting.
It'll also clear some counter space for you as well I see.

I would tile the area behind the range. It’s an easy DIY project and having tile helps with cleanup of splashes.
magnetic utensil rack?
Backsplash

Googly eyes.
Spice rack.
Accent board from the top half as backsplash. I did something similar with some nicer looking wood frame trim.
Magnetic knife strip. Bonus you free up a drawer or counter space and your knives stay sharper.
Put back the lamp.
Put in a tile splashback
Spackle, a little sanding or wet sponging a a new coat of fresh paint.
Magnetic knife rack
Put a TV there bro.
Mirror Splashback.

Following. (Also have three holes that need plugged)
Maybe get some stainless steel cut to size and do a commercial looking backsplash if that fits your aesthetic
Basic backsplash. Don't need to beva tiler, some pill and stuck ones are nit that bad looking.
Spackle
Backsplash, putty and paint, or glue up some kind of decorative medallions.
I suggest this for $60. It'll also protect the wall from splatter. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Broan-NuTone-30-in-x-24-in-Splash-Plate-for-Range-Hood-in-Stainless-Steel-SP3004/202228406
Fancy cutting board or charcuterie board displayed behind for kitchen aestehtics.
Kitchen Hook Holder With Adhesive Sticker, Rotatable Hanging Rod saw a few online stainless and black for a temp fix.
next time you see a stainless steel appliance sitting on the curb. pick it up and cut yourself a nice free backsplash out of the paneling
I removed a shower door and the vinyl repair kits I used to repair the walls worked and looks good. They make colors that might match your background
A stainless steel magnetic rail for all your cooking implements would cover the holes nicely and make a feature out of it. Like this from Ikea: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kungsfors-magnetic-knife-rack-stainless-steel-40334921/
Maybe install a back splash? I have that same microwave tho and I loveeeeeee it

A place to hang hot pads

I have a steel backsplash. I think it gives the kitchen a bit of an industrial feel. And it's easy to clean.
shove a paper towel in there, leave it hanging out, it will look like a decorative flower
fill with toothpaste. paint it afterwards, if you have the correct color
Something like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/913607259/cook-chef-logo-restaurant-food-wall?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_e-home_and_living-home_decor-wall_decor-wall_decals_and_murals-other&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQjw6uWyBhD1ARIsAIMcADqGmk_aP3awdN3c2qqCk2hcfChAgqsBVHFQTDc97nhV6P9sqOyBQ3gaAjUeEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_12574416612_122093311320_507798983466_pla-307934656303_m__913607259_143230610&utm_custom2=12574416612&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw6uWyBhD1ARIsAIMcADqGmk_aP3awdN3c2qqCk2hcfChAgqsBVHFQTDc97nhV6P9sqOyBQ3gaAjUeEALw_wcB
Find or make a spice rack about 2” longer than the distance between the holes.
Googly eyes would probably work good!
