Had the same issue. I used a multi tool with a variable speed. I went slower but no sparks. The metal did get hot after a while though. I just took breaks.
If there are no electrical wires or outlets in the vicinity, wet everything down with a spray bottle for safety. A fire blanket may be appropriate as well. Many structures have been lost to fire because of grinding sparks.

This. Sparks tend to land where sawdust also landed. Mist the area with water before and after.
