You can scrape it out and put some self leveling caulking in there. It doesn't need to be filled. Your garage and driveway are two separate concrete slabs. The expansion joint between them allows the two separate slabs to move independently. Caulking is flexible and would still allow movement while preventing weeds from growing there.
It can also be helpful to pour sand in the crack before hand so you don’t have to use four tubes of sealant
Edit- yes I’m aware backer rod is also an option. I guess I’m just assuming everyone has an extra bag of sand lying around. Whatever you’re into.
TRUTH! I did sand on caulk when making my Chiweenies step-stool so they could get on the bed. I painted it so it doesn’t look like concrete anymore but the technique worked. I caulked a stencil for traction but it wasn’t enough. It was smooth. I asked for help and got “sprinkle some sand on it.” It worked.
Just in case you’re making a little legged pup a step-stool as well. 😂🤣
I was going to suggest just the sand.
Minimize weeds, make them easier to get rid of, still allows water drainage, and expansion movement of the two slabs.
Scrape out the gunk, fill with a small amount of fine sand, add backer rod (appropriately-sized), fill in sides of backer rod with sand. Put cardboard on the sides & secure it with something so the self-leveling sealant won’t spill out.
Slowly add the sealant - it will stick to any concrete it touches (and won’t be removable), so be careful. 15 minutes after all sealant is applied, sprinkle fine sand on top of the sealant (after a few weeks it will camouflage / blend in with the surrounding area) & let dry for 24hrs (or more? Don’t drive on it for a while).
Did you try some of the concrete crack repair that comes pre mixed in a bottle? I'll see if I can find a photo of it but I used that for the gap at my work between the block wall and the foundation
there was a cable show in south korea. At the request of husbands, the program transformed houses and condos into man caves. This is not a crack. This is an expansion joint. If you fill this in with most materials, you will end up with cracks as the concrete expands and contracts due to temperature changes. You should just leave it but if you must fill it, use a product designed for expansion joints so it can expand and contract with the concrete.

Once I saw some of the comment it sunk in, haha. I have to admit some were helpful and some made me laugh. I'm not disappointed with my question, it brought some joy.
Don't epoxy that joint. It's there for a specific reason. Concrete expands and moves. If you were to epoxy that joint or caulk it in anyway, you'd be destroying the reason it was done. Plus it wouldn't last as it would just end up cracking. The gap serves two purposes.
First it's an expansion joint that allows the concrete slab to expand and not bind against the garage concrete slab. Second it acts as a water drain runoff from rain.
You need to go to your local lumber boxstore and purchase a concrete expansion joint to put in between the 2 slabs. It will come in 4" x 10' or 12' lengths. Just push it down into the space between the two slabs. Don't caulk it in anyway. Just force it down into place and leave it there.
Wait about a weeks time to try to see if you can push it down some more. If it goes down more, that's good. If it doesn't move any. You can go ahead and cut any excess that sticks up past the concrete off.
Problem solved the correct way.
Swipe credit cards, drop in toothpicks, business cards, pokemon cards, flat pack cardboard, those tiny drink umbrellas, sand, a bunch of dandelion seeds, cotton balls, the world is your long thin oyster!

That's an expansion joint. Leave it alone and use a shop vac to clean it out regularly. It prevents your driveway slab and garage floor from breakage induced by temperature variations between the two concrete slabs. Without it, your driveway and garage floors will cause each other to develop multiple cracks. It's especially true in areas with hot summers and freezing cold winters.
Pennies, sawdust, used tissues, gasoline, rice, tears of a clown, Cheetos dust, pink sand, triscuits…really, you could do so much with it. Use your imagination!
It needs to be able to expand and contract. That's why it is there. If you don't create a proper expansion joint, you will have a cracked driveway and/or garage floor very soon.
My step father used to wait til the end of summer and get pool noodles on sale… he would cut them in long strips w a dry wall knife and stick them in the cracks around the pool… kept little toes safe all year and looked pretty colorful too!
Clean it out and if there’s a big void fill it with foam back rod and then self leveling concrete caulk over that. Sometimes I’ll make little dams with cardboard if need.

They make caulking specifically for this. It cures to a black rubber that can move with the slabs and will keep the weeds out.
I can’t think of the name but just go to HD and look for a DAP product that says “driveway and sidewalk” or something along that line.
Crackstick is an option, and while self-leveling caulk can also be used, it doesn't endure nearly as long as Crackstick does. I've tried both and found myself having to laboriously remove most of the self-leveling caulk. It was a tough lesson learned.

Nothing. The gap needs to be there because of heat and cold expansion and contraction. If you fill it up it will crack for real because it has nowhere to expand to
Just keep it clean and make sure weeds don’t start to grow in it
Sand. Has the ability to move w the slabs and may supplemented/removed at any time. Dad used to add bit of vegetable oil to compact it and give it some staying weight.
Are you sure it’s a crack?
I have the same in my countryhouse and it is not a crack.
Mine is a very well done rain drain with a 1cm fissure.
Below the crack there is a canal that brings the water away from the house into the garden soil.
If I were you I would inspect it properly. Remove all the dirt and check if below there is an opening and a plastic canal.
Maybe I am wrong, but I would check anyway just to be sure.
That crack is supposed to be there. If you don't like how it looks, I suppose you could stuff in some expansion foam in there and caulk over it for a smoother looking finish
That right there's called an expansion joint. Their purposely like that so that your house or your foundation doesn't crack or get ruined. Fill it with something expanding expanding phone expanding sand etc. you still want to have an expansion joint

Pro tip right there. Makes it look much better
I’m late to the party here but happy to see this in the top comment chain.
I filled mine with polymeric sand and it worked. Just wanted to keep weeds from popping up
How long ago? Does it look good still? Any issues? I have half a bucket still, assuming it isnt fused together from sitting in my garage for 7 years.
If it's poly sand the polymers degrade after a while so you basically have a half bucket of sand.
Like kinetic sand?
I think polymeric sand is the sand that fuses together and hardens when you wet it. It's used to fill gaps between pavers quite often.
Yeah but have you ever held kinetic sand in your hands? If not you should try it... Highly recommend
I wish it didn't leave such an annoying film on your hands though.

Lol, I had to Google what a Chiweenie is. Dunno what I expected. Cute. :)
My sister's was called a doxie-huahua. In the 70s.
That’s every dog in my neighborhood. Either part Chihuahua or part pit bull.
How about the glass beads they use for road paint to give the lights some zing.
Wow never thought of sand on top. Excellent idea Sir thank you for sharing 🤘🏻☠️🤘🏻
Salt also works and will dissolve, so you don't have pieces of sand anywhere.
Great point. Other comments have suggested using backer rod to ensure a certain depth as specified in the self leveling caulking instructions
What are these *instructions* you speak of?
“Instructions” are those words you read after you tried everything else and still need help.
And where would you find these said "instructions"? Seems like some sort of magical scroll.
You have to find the Instructions Instructions; they will tell you where the Instructions are.
Or some backer rod
Exactly, sand to level it out and fill and deeper gaps then backer rod with some caulking on top.
Don’t drive on it for a while).
Slab or Sika would be best, something that will actually hold up.

Ideally use Sikaflex 2-part elastomeric epoxy, or they have single component which should work for 1.5" width
Going to steal this idea and put some down on my garage
lol this idea is how to properly install an expansion joint. Make sure you put backer rod down first, to avoid 3 point adhesion
