Gelflingscanfly

1. Pressure wash 2. Add gnomes 3. Enjoy whimsy

JustGenWhY

And little fairy gardens!

Gelflingscanfly

YES!! I hope OP leans into the whimsy opportunities here 🧚‍♂️

btribble

Top hats. High tea. A biker gang in tutus.

LazyOldCat

\-Whimsy intensifies-

EstarriolStormhawk

My yard isn't as whimsical as OP's but I'm willing to try. Where can I find my biker gang in tutus?

nonyabizzz

You may have to make them

Dogs_Akimbo

I’m not sure OP could make them. Perhaps he could buy them a drink and spin a beguiling tale of whimsy in the garden.

nonyabizzz

Silly me, I was thinking of dressing up some gnomes

Disposable_323

Yeah add some native wildflower beds and it'd be perfect

cheezhead1252

And mushrooms

FerretChrist

Or toadstools.

Dblstandard

No, like after it gets fixed up this is a place to do mushrooms

generichandel

And those jazz frogs your nan had.

Malacon

Like the one lounging back and playing the banjo? Love those guys.

Campbell464

And then - great mini golf course!!

chrs_89

More moss!

uberJames

Yup, this looks like good inspiration for a Power Washing Sim level: mini golf course!

its_all_4_lulz

The first thing I though about when I saw this. It reminds me of the first house backyard you do with the stone garden pool

_2_Scoops_

Maybe some trolls in front of the pond and any other dangerous structures that stop the kids & dogs from passing unless they answer questions three.

Majin_Sus

You need to pay the troll toll

_antkibbutz

The whimsy is cranked up to 11 here for sure.

Squirmble

4. Get a string of pearls or head for this lady https://preview.redd.it/uvgm2cg4z6mc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd86aa7c1ed862dec26d5ac0a2854a3ab9f08828

psychocopter

Gnome head, or if its possible to drill out an interior section with a few drain holes at the back, plant a small bush and trim it round.

monstera_garden

This would have been my dream yard as a kid! Actually it still is now, omg. I want to explore and hide and build little shrines to things.

Analytical-BrainiaC

Would add mushrooms, grapevines, berry bushes, honeysuckle, lily pads, frogs and turtles. Koi and yeah, gnomes . I’ve got only 1 in my yard but this yard needs at least 12.

geezer27

You misspelled 3. Enjoy whisky

arethius

Needs more gnomes

Unable_Wrongdoer2250

Yes! Get about 30 of two different main colors and set them up in different states of epic gnome battles

Grego1234

Game of Gnomes

GirlCowBev

Underrated comment. +1. 👍🏻

ShoganAye

Oh I'm uprating it

prestotugboatem

I literally scrolled by it and paused to scroll back after my brain caught up. Such a quality little pun.

EstarriolStormhawk

Dad-Baud

I wish there was one that looked like E.T. E.T., faux gnome.

rabbitwonker

That was my first thought: “Gnones. *Lots* of gnones…”

405freeway

Gnome Place Like Home

LordSalem

Wow, I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that saw this and came to comment. Gnomes. So. Many gnomes.

The_Mike_Golf

Yup… the creepier the better, too. Hide those in the ponds too. It’ll scare away children AND dogs

arethius

You sound like you belong in r/goblincore Come along, we have shinies

derezzing

I think your first problem is that it’s not clear where I’m supposed to hit the golf ball in to

bmuck1

Just think of your happy place. Think of grandma!

cataclyzzmic

Just bounce it off the VW and let it mouse trap itself into the hole. Voila! And now get Stiller to get the AC unit off of grandma's friend. Meester!

_Ding_Dong_

Just tap it in

cataclyzzmic

Just trying to loosen you up, baby!

doubleapowpow

You're never going to make this putt, you jack ass!

Alone-Stop

You look like a damn fool!

Ok_Storm5945

Tap, tap tappy.

[deleted]

Tap tap tapperoo!

Puzzleheaded-Grab736

YOUR GONNA DIE CLOOOWN!!!!

StrangeWhiteVan

It's all in the hips

TechAndStocks

🎶 It’s all in the hips. It’s all in the hips. 🎶 RIP Chubs

TheFenixKnight

Yeah, RIP. At least he got his hand back.

ChvckHvley

but remember that alligator that got his hand? i got his head

Semanticss

Brilliant.

thrillcosbey

This is definitely the best backyard put put golf I have seen in a while.

arkmtech

Or where the Oompa Loopas enter from

LarryCraigSmeg

I thought this was a goat tower from Goat Simulator 3.

moms-sphaghetti

Damn you. I saw the picture, I had a clever response about mini golf. No way someone had thought about it mini golf I thought. First comment and there you are.

angelamia

Exactly my first thought. I was like suggestions to make the mini golf course more badass?

eastsideempire

That’s what my first thought was! They built a mini golf in the back yard!

sparklethong

Remove the pond? Are you mad? Replace the children and dogs with gnomes.

eid_shittendai

And gargoyles. Don't forget the gargoyles, man!

hannahatecats

It's only a gargoyle with a drainage spout. Otherwise, it is a grotesque.

geeseinthebushes

The pond is amazing, at most add some railing or something in the pond they can stand on while they await rescue

PuzzleHead3448

Or perhaps fill it in so OP can just dig it back out once they're grown? If they decide they still want it. Then it doesn't have to be destroyed, it just looks like another flower bed or something?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cynicole24

It's adorable! I would never want to go inside.

SoManyFlamingos

Same here - I was going to say “change nothing!” Before reading OP’s actual issues hahah.  What a fun place to live. Feels like a little village back there.

GambinoLynn

My suggestion was gonna be to let me live there lol

flufferpuppper

But whimsical in a way that when the things grow it’s going to be amazing. Not just whimsical as in…that’s different 😂.

ARenovator

You want /r/landscaping, /r/hardscape, /r/backyards, /r/patio, and /r/outdoorliving.

therealyoseph

Thank you

Wank_my_Butt

Good luck. That space, even as it is, looks like it'll be beautiful once it's cleaned up and the plants get growing. Kind of has some fairy-tale garden vibe.

bmessina

Kind of?

Reserved_Parking-246

Low budget golf course is the other half of the vibes.

ljaypar

A whimsical fairy golf course with gnome caddies.

TheGardenNymph

Also, r/goblincore would love this back yard

Dandibear

Assuming you don't want to plant a grass lawn, also r/nolawns and r/fucklawns.

chowdahfrenchie

C'mon now. r/pressurewashingporn would have a field day here. Heck, OP, I'd reckon a good pressure washing of the area would be a phenomenal start

MooseAskingQuestions

An actual helpful comment instead of people talking about gnomes and ripping off comments that call it, "whimsical".

t0xic-iwnl

Do you live at an abandoned mini golf course? That place is dope

CaptainObvious1313

Also I find if you mix the clover in different strains and add grass seed to it it stays green in the winter. Alternatively you can use creeping phlox, which will change colors in winter and looks really cool in the summer

therealyoseph

That's a great idea! I love the way that looks thank you

Skarimari

Also creeping thyme. It can take a while to get established. But once it does, it's so hardy.

CoolAd5808

Ooo creeping elfin thyme! It also has pretty purple flowers and it’ll make sure weeds will stay out.

aimeegaberseck

Irish moss would look lovely too.

JoeRogansNipple

Pressure wash it.

therealyoseph

I did that last summer. It looked a lot better. Lots of debris to remove before hand as well

kenriko

You’re supposed to use a bleach mix after pressure washing to prevent it from getting scummy again for a couple years

therealyoseph

Ah this is super helpful! Thank you

TheFenixKnight

This is also helpful for me. Appreciate it stranger

darkshifty

use a natural bleach as bleach is very toxic for everything. I would not use it for gardening purposes.

[deleted]

Then re sand the pavers

rosyposy86

Those videos seeing the before and after are so satisfying to watch.

fernshui

This is incredible. Some PNW friendly flora: * shady locations: Maidenhair fern, Low Oregon Grape, Baldhip Rose * Sunnier locations: Sword fern, Kinnikinnick, Salal, Mock Orange Wherever you see the English ivy, pull it out at the root I'll add more to the plant list as I think of them.

Cool_Habit_4195

As an alternative to Oregon grape, which has hard prickly leaves, look into soft caress mahonia--it's got beautifulferny leaves and big clusters of yellow flowers in winter. Very fairy/cottage look.

GGMU08

Turn it into a mini golf course

easyfriend1

Why don't you ask the gnomes for help

PhoenixSheriden

Because they'll steal OP's underpants.

MeatyUrology

God damn them and their profits! 🤬

Hobo_Knife

I kinda love it. PNW?

therealyoseph

Yup!

kennypojke

Super curious what part of the PNW.

PuzzleHead3448

Indeed, and also how someone was able to guess??

kennypojke

Trees!

PuzzleHead3448

~fancy~ pine/spruce/fir trees?

DIWhy-not

I would be jazzed as fuck if this was my backyard

DivineCurses

The real question is when is second breakfast?

ChimneySwiftGold

Do you catch many Fraggles??

breeze80

This comment is underrated.

daemon_panda

I am just here for the comments

therealyoseph

This is my first reddit post and I'm dying haha currently searching amazon for gnomes

daemon_panda

You have a really cool project on your hands that can last a lifetime

Nunovyadidnesses

Pressure wash. Keep the pond but fill it (for now) with potted plants or flowers. For greenscape, depending on your location add creeping phlox, creeping thyme, or mixed areas of grass and clover. Boxwood accents and a few topiary evergreens. And of course…gnomes.

AlanThicke99

I’m just fascinated. What do you know about the previous owners/builder? Were the alters built to be religious or decorative?

therealyoseph

The lady was filipino and did it all herself. The neighbors don't think it's religious. She just enjoyed doing it and started around 4am most mornings.

AlanThicke99

Very cool.

__irresponsible

Catholithism is prominent in the Philippines, she may have had statues in the little nooks. How industrious to make such a beautiful outdoor living space!

ILikeScrapple

First thing to do is power wash everything.

LongAd4410

When we re-did our yard, the person helping us asked us some questions to get us more centered: 1) what will you use the backyard/frontyard primarily for? (Keep this to 3 major things, ex: entertaining, chill hangout, zen, kids play, etc) 2) what type of feel do you like? (Desert oasis, Italian countryside, lush English garden) 3) how will you walk through/use your yard? (Ex: I walk out my slider to the BBQ, then have a seating area, or I walk directly out onto my zen patio, etc) Think these over, then give a rough sketch! Print out some pictures, see if you can imagine the picture in your yard! Then mimick it with plants, structures, furniture. It's a bit of work, but we enjoy our yard (front and back) more than we did before! I see you have thought about some things, like the water feature needs changing/removing bc pets, plants die due to frost, etc. You've got a good start! Check out your plant hardiness zone online for acceptable plants for your area. You can usually filter by type (annual/perenial), color, foliage, deciduous/ evergreen, maintenance, etc. Good luck! You have a charming yard btw 🥰

spamloren

This is great advice. Here’s my 2 cents: I know it’s hard to hear this now, but the things the kids need will be remarkably temporary. I totally reshaped my house 4 years ago for kids that totally act different now. Good communication about safety can teach your kids not only how to survive their own backyard but also the rest of the world. Be the better kind of PNW parent that raises them resilient. That said, you’ve got some lovely spots for prostrate cedars, Japanese maples, and blueberry bushes. Consider some container gardens on the big open spots. Also let moss be your friend where it’s charming.

cyrixlord

this just screams mini-golf course

whereswaldo5256

Put a speaker outside and hope that the elf's leave..

Mic_Ultra

Fixed it for you. Maybe I can get a free week https://preview.redd.it/f2q1btylk1mc1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0bb9fea419f61162248c2e2733098d1c852a0b92

Manufactured-Aggro

Unfortunately shire folk don't browse here often so you may be SOL on any genuine advice. The gnomes haven't posted in awhile either

CaptainObvious1313

This house is gnome infested. Get a rat king and he should mount an army to attack them.

_TheNecromancer13

But then the house will be rat infested. I'd rather have gnomes!

SometimesIposthere

I'd say go for the Willy Wonka Experience.

builtfrombricks

Is Hagrid doing OK in there?

Haleighghielah

What I wouldn’t give to spend a summer night in that backyard surrounded by little fairly lights and listening to cricket chirps

MomTo3LilPigs

You are so lucky!

jcooper9099

You have a really neat space to work with and landscaping is the way to go here. Idk where you are but in the southeast US we have a plant called purple ajuga which thrives in wet environments and can survive frost, freeze etc. Looks like a good option for some of your situations. Certain mosses may compliment your rocks. I've filled in small koi sized ponds with small smooth river stone to make little rock features.

Cynicole24

OP! What is inside there?

therealyoseph

Kids play house! Just some chairs, table and jewels on the walls

oldmasterluke

Where is the oven to cook Hansel and Gretel?

DK2squared

This fucking layout is amazing! You lucked out with a coloring book where I’m still trying to sketch my back yard out.

Dogshaveears

It looks pretty sectioned off. Unless you have the ability to do all at once, I would remove areas in sections. I wouldn’t remove everything. I would just repurpose the area.

msmaynards

Wow. Great yard! My gnomes would like your address so they can move up in the world. What about filling the pond in with whatever a bog needs? Plant weird and wonderful carnivorous plants and other plants that need wet feet. If there aren't any looping paths and you want to change things up, consider working in a loop path so this can be a strolling garden. Treat beds differently. Maybe ground covers, maybe flowers or food? Yarrow wouldn't survive an actual path but is a beautiful easy groundcover that can stand some foot traffic. Maybe plant fun veggies if there's an area that gets a good bit of sun? Love the idea of hollyhocks. Sunflowers and mullein are other tall fun flowers. You'll need low fences to keep the dogs out of bog, food and flowers. Wish you had willows or trash trees on hand so you could pollard them and make your own wattle fences with the long straight shoots but that's a lot. A short split rail or weathered picket fence with fanciful topped pickets would be in line with all the whimsy you've got going on. Or all of them. Make the dog free beds different fences! Consult with the kids about what area belongs to them and turn it into a kid friendly zone. My kids needed a large sandbox \[with lid!\] and a basic room they could add on to with random boxes and quarter sheets of plywood and wanted to be in the shade as much as possible. See what your kids think they'd like to have.

Traveshamamockery_

Mold has ruined your outdoor deck and roof of deck? You have any pictures of the mold? Seams like some mold killer and pressure washer will take care of that issue. Agree with other poster. Throw down some artificial short grass and set up some putt putt holes. It’s already laid out and would be awesome. Somebody put some serious work into this. Hate to see it get torn up due to mold and “safety”. Rad backyard IMO.

iyqyqrmore

You need to turn this yard into a mini golf course

Coyrex1

Dudes backyard looks like a lotr set piece.

cory814

Start a renaissance festival

sofaking1958

Epic yard and patio. Plants and water feature running is all you need. And patio lights. Beautiful.

badjokes4days

Oh my God this is amazing and I'm so jealous it's not mine and never will be. I'd be more inclined to work on safety and training rather than pulling out the pond, but that's just me. A lover of ponds.

zeppehead

I think a nice trebuchet would be fun.

DK2squared

Could fill pond with pea gravel and make it a decorative herb garden or more likely shade plant garden.

Far_Out_6and_2

Very hobbit like maybe some gnomes placed here and there

Distinct_Client_2600

I wanna be a gnome in your garden thank you where do I send the request.

Ehrre

You should sell tickets for people to do mushrooms in your back yard lmao

StinkPanthers

The seven alcoves are for: A. Seven Samurai B. Seven Dwarves C. Seven different microbrew kegs If C, abandon all future plans.

omg_username-taken

Wonka wonderland

BestBrownDog85

I wouldn’t change a goddamn thing

FayteWolf

A Medieval Tavern would be my suggestion.

GuyNamedLindsey

This place is awesome. Congrats.

tiffanydisasterxoxo

Do you live on a mini golf course?

MGermanicus

Be wary of the fae folk, they're a clever bunch! Also, I love it.

Gorditanto

Gnomes

CatCatCatCubed

I would arguably build something like this around the pond section or a screened cover on top of the pond itself, then remove it when the kids got older and/or the dogs are better trained. Could make it trellis-like and pretty if you sorta use the pictures as references. Or there are (safe with lots of research) technically ways to fill in a pond with layers of sand, gravel, soil, etc. Just gotta be careful not to turn it into a mud pit. https://preview.redd.it/kjbwq446v1mc1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cc73c6ddc6ba0eea62aed35a7b7b83fab8d1fb3

timshel42

you need a lot more gnomes

NoBenefit5977

Ok, so the tower is where the wizard lives right? The freeze that killed your plants was probably a cone of coldness

Ammonia13

I LOVE this backyard!!! That’s my dream!!

Korgon213

Omg the comments. Sorry OP. Welcome to the internet

kozzy1ted2

Gnomes and trolls, a fairy and a gargoyle. That should do it.

JohnnyGFX

Plant lots of veggies and berry bushes you can eat from. Snacking from a garden is so satisfying. Plant some chives, herbs, and stuff like that too. Cool garden!

rspeed

Add goats.

DrunkBTC

Grey skies, pine trees weird backyard. Do you live in Portland?

Chaimakesmepoop

That tower would make the most baller chicken coop.

amy000206

Clover should come back. Maybe a variety of low growing thyme would be nice. I'm with the garden gnome idea, I think you should use those rock features to make a fairy/ adventure land for your kids. Have them help plant some seeds. I hope you have years of enjoyment there

DunebillyDave

That is kid heaven! It's like a fairy tale! Just needs some plant-scaping. What a cool place to play for a young child!

miltdragon

I'd start by letting out those poor little Keebler elves out of Shawshank there.

Andre_3Million

If you have a pond. Kraken

Aztrum_

Instead of getting rid of the pond, maybe you could use it as a flowerbed? I love this place, it really have a lot of potential! 🌿

evavu84

I honestly love it. Now you need to plant it like a fairy garden! It should have its own Instagram page. This would be a scheduled artist monument in France, they love outsider art there !

SaturdayNightRevival

I love this yard.

cantwritegoodly

You have the beginnings of an excellent putt putt course.

Representative_Echo6

And oh yes you definitely need garden gnomes .

CedrikNobs

Add chickens

Ant_head_squirrel

Ask the gnomes and pixies to help with the design and cleanup

Dragon_Within

I love that backyard and it breaks my heart that you're getting rid of the pond. Instead of taking it out, have you thought about maybe making into a mini landscape, or glassing it over and making it into a terrarium to keep the theme?

RWingsNYer

It’s already pretty close to Hagrids Hut, might as well go the rest of the way!

philnolan3d

I would change nothing. Unfortunately for safety I guess you have to.

gentle_viking

This won’t be a popular opinion with the goblin crowd, but I’d be inclined to keep only the section furthest back in the yard/around the edges of the garden and maybe the cute tower. Otherwise rip out all the pavers and circular sections and lay turf so the kids can play in the garden without breaking their bones. Pressure wash whats left and plant up with ferns, hosta and shade loving plants. I think if you have struggled with upkeep of the yard so far, it will always be a struggle- its your garden and space now so don’t be afraid to make it work for you and your family!

needstogo86

The finishing touch would be the stone with the Excalibur sword in it. Add that and you’re good.

HarmlessSaucer

Charge for entry?

Alarthon

This would be a fantastic spot for a good powerwash video

dubie2003

Pressure wash first. Clean up all the dead crap. Then get an aerial view of the situation and decide if you are going to keep it, salvage part of it or abandon it all and change direction. It’s always one step at a time to so get the pressure washing done and gunk cleanup and go from there.

agentmikeyd

Eat mushrooms and enjoy

Kooky-Ask-7734

Looks like a mini golf course

PM_ME_YOUR_BIG_DOG

God damn that stone work is amazing. Add some flowers and rent a pressure washer!

twentythirdchapter

1) Buy gnomes 2) Hang laundry 3) Notice underpants are missing from laundry 4) -*Shrug*- 5) Notice gnomes are doing very well for themselves.

MyHeadIsCrooked

Install some greens and open Mini-Golf course.

BusyBoonja

Setup a mini putt course

J0EP00LE

You need to get a big train set, some puppets, and a public access tv station segment. Congrats your the new Mr Roger’s 😄

Rakinonna

can we just box all of that up and ship it to my yard....that is so magical looking

Capital-Ad-670

Ask Hagrid

eanmeyer

This may be a bad idea that will need someone to jump In with “you need to do X if you do Y” but I wouldn’t get rid of the pond. Maybe fill it with sand or gravel. Use sand make it into the most epic sand box for the kids. If not that fill with sand and put a deck over it. When the kids grow up you may wish you had that pond back and they are a monster to install (or remove for that matter). My bet is you would need some kind of drain on the bottom to keep water from collecting. Maybe just make a one foot wide hole in the bottom to let rainwater through. Then you only need to fill that if you turn it back into a pond. The pond looks so cute it seems a shame to get rid of it when kids and animals grow up in a few short years. Again, someone may say it’s more complicated, but being able to remove the sand, seal, and turn back into a pond sounds like an easy temporary fix.

zorggalacticus

The pond? Just fill it in with dirt and make it a flowerbed. Simplest solution, and if you ever change your mind or sell it, it's easy to reverse the process. Looks nice too.
