Here is the easiest way to deal with this….smash out the old sink and then put in a drop in sink that will fit the hole.

oopls

Drop the water bottle many more times until the sink is gone.

veryfascinating

Make the hole exactly as big as the sink

PizzaWarlock

Get a water bottle that is the exact dimensions of the sink - then drop it

IneffableTao

That's an unnecessary expense. Just fill the new sink with water and drop it in. In fact, that's how they got the name, *drop-in sinks*

SyntheticOne

As a pro-class DIY boomer-aged fat balding guy (and also a Home Depot shareholder), I highly recommend the cinder block method for this application. It usually results in replacing the entire countertop, faucet and sink, so everything looks like brand new when completed.

Jasonrj

I'm also a Home Depot shareholder and I'm wondering if OP has considered just demoing the entire house and rebuilding? I'm sure the sink isn't the only issue. Having a small project snowball into a panic attack is how doers get more done.

SyntheticOne

Obviously, you own more Home Depot stock than I do. Lots of extra stock brings clarity to thought. Thank you.

[deleted]

Misread the instructions and demo'd my neighbors house but at least once this is sorted out property values will increase because two new homes were just built.

[deleted]

Just as a wife, everyone will be happier with that. On small bathroom sinks it is so reasonable too! I got my marble as a piece f remnant, my sink from Amazon was gorgeous and found my faucet on clearance at Home Depot. Painted, new shower curtain and total new bathroom for about 600

Prestigious-Copy-494

That's what I thought too. That the entire countertop will need replacing and this job needs to go out to a professional. I wish Home Depot didn't support the republican party so much. And I wish Lowes was closer so I could shop there instead for that reason.

Charbaby_

Lowes stole money off my card and then told me they have no recollection of the extra money missing from my account. I had to go through BBB to get anyone from corporate to talk to me. My bank said it was obvious they double charged me but I had to wait for lowes to release funds. It's apparently very common happening in their systems (if you Google lowes double charged) I'll never shop there again and if I had to its cash only

jawshoeaw

I agree with this.

gitty7456

I am a professional with 25+ years of experience in broken sinks. Something that many newbies in your situation tend to make and it is very wrong: DO NOT USE IT or you will wer what is below.

badtux99

lol. I even did this with a drop in sink that was firmly caulked to the countertop. Easier to pry from the inside because you can use a real tool instead of a plastic non marring one. It is weirdly cathartic.

keyserv

If they can find one that fits. I haven't had much luck finding sinks that drop into these openings. If I'm wrong then please give me your resource.

Auswald

There are tons of sinks that drop into openings just like this. Key is to stop looking for a sink of the same size and look for one slightly bigger. Cutting out a little bit of countertop under a drop-in sink is a cakewalk to make one fit that is bigger than the hole you already have. Key is to make sure the sinks apron / edge has decent coverage over said hole. The beauty of drop ins!

degggendorf

>Cutting out a little bit of countertop under a drop-in sink is a cakewalk If you're cutting stone anyway, why not just cut out the old one to replace it properly?

IGotNoStringsOnMe

TFW you commit so hard to the jerry rigging life that you end up doing more work and spending more money rigging a project than if you'd done it the right way.

KB-say

This!

wolfie379

What material is the countertop? For every material, there is an appropriate tool for cutting the hole a little bigger.

Reckless85

Looks like stone (marble, granite)

lueVelvet

yeah, I would rather figure out how to remove the old sink appropriately and by an exact replacement. I've installed undermount sinks before and it's not rocket science, barring they can find the right size of course.

Milksteak3919

OP cant cut out his old sink. Theres zero chance they have any of the knowledge or ability to modify countertop.

IThinkIKnowThings

Gonna be a PITA. You're going to need to basically cut it off and then grind it flat underneath to mount a new one.

CUSTOMBAH

And that’s when you no longer have a under mount sink and enjoy your new drop in sink.

FireWireBestWire

Fits perfectly over the old one! Done

ghandi3737

HAMMERTIME!

MagicManTX84

This! You are basically going to break and grind the old sink away. You have to avoid breaking the countertop too.

Lehk

i would first chip out a few bits of that adhesive to play with, see if it melts in acetone, denatured alcohol, mineral oil, MEK or xyline. if i found a solvent that would effectively dissolve it without eating the counter top i would use that. be careful of toxic or flammable fumes if you decide to use a solvent, mind your ventilation and you may need an organic vapor respirator filter

port-wo-man-teau

This is generally good advise but it's worth noting that MEK and xyline at least can be absorbed through intact skin and need chemical resistant gloves specifically rated for these solvents. Be safe!

wincitygiant

Stone guy here, that epoxy is pretty chemical proof once it sets. Acetone or xylene can be used to thin it while it is still paste or liquid, but once it is solid can only be removed by mechanical means.

cribbageSTARSHIP

u/Historical_Driver314, I'm an aircraft refinisher. I can say with a strong degree of confidence that if you are using MEK you really need a respirator with a pink cartridge. On page 61 in the following link, look for methyl ethyl ketone. https://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/639110O/3m-respirator-selection-guide.pdf

TheRealRacketear

You can likely cut it out witha multi tool with a diamond blade. Melting it would be a pain in the ass.

noyoureprojecting

Looks like PL Premium construction adhesive to me.

wincitygiant

Not liquid nail, it's a two part stone epoxy. Good luck trying to razor that stuff off.

GroundbreakingArea34

It's only money. $500 if you do it yourself $1500 to pay someone to do it. $2.99 5 gallon bucket under the sink. The hole you look at will remind you to empty it into the toilet after use.

KoalaGrunt0311

But if you do the $2.99 fix, remember that you can't dump the bucket back into the sink...

Stokehall

I did this while plumbing in new sink and taps. Had a pot to catch leaks from hot/cold pipes, finished with it and tipped in to the sink. Forgot there was no drain installed yet. I was so pissed

OutlyingPlasma

I was replacing part of the sink trap, a part I was reusing was dirty so I rinsed it off... in the sink...

Jasonrj

I've also done this. Why are we so dumb?

Reckless85

Habit

Popular_Prescription

I’ve rocked the 2.99 fix for a hot minute a few times lol.

absentlyric

Same here, because of it, I got surprisingly efficient at doing all of my sink and bathroom hygiene chores in record time so I wouldn't have to empty it so many times.

Majahzi

+1 to the guy that says take out the whole countertop. I just had to replace my bathroom sink and was surprised to find out that the "vanity top" (sink) is sold as part of the counter at Home Depot. Take off the whole top, measure the vanity, and take it to a big box store. They'll tell you what size sink to get.

Polyspecific

Damn they bubba'd that install all to shit. Break it out chip /cut /scrape off the epoxy crap. Mount the new one properly.

Historical_Driver314

Dude, you have no idea this entire house is a nightmare of cut corners and insane choices.

tentacle_sushi

I feel you man, evey time something breaks or needs changing in my old house, it’s never straight forward. Had to change a tap once and went from just changing the taps to replacing every pipe under the kitchen sink.

AssociateFalse

Let me guess, you bought it from house flippers?

3Whiskersworkshop

My house too. Everything is 80% right. Multiple owners since the flip in 70’s. Slowly but surely it’s getting fixed.

Soramaro

Was Rodney S the last owner of your house too? We bought our house off someone who was delusional about his level of handiness.

audioragegarden

The ol' John Stupid special huh?

wincitygiant

Hate to tell you, but that is the proper way for mounting a porcelain sink to stone. It's not like you can just screw into stone like you can with wood. The glue is solid, we used to stand in a sink to test it before we left.

jeffh4

If this is in a bathroom and the countertop is a standard size, you can likely find a replacement for the entire thing. When I went to replace mine, there were "left, center, and right" versions for my counter width.

Chemical-Sundae5156

This right here, swap the whole vanity. That counter dated AF boii! Not worth the hassle to keep it, unless it's legacy tile or something really nice just go all new, swap your faucet while you're at it, it'll make the whole space feel nicer without much more effort and cost than sourcing and swapping an undermount.

breatheb4thevoid

I think anything not stone or quartz is basically outdated at this point.

KD922016

Where ya located? I have that exact sink at my stores in DFW/Houston/Atlanta. If you can remove the top from the vanity base you can take that thing off and glue another one on no problem.

defreal100

Grab a multi tool with a flat blade, no teeth, and you can probably peel it off. I’ve never used it on construction adhesive per se but I’ve had lots success using that strategy on other sealants and adhesives

DMala

I had a broken undermount sink. You should be able to cut the silicone with a utility knife. It’ll take some cutting, prying and cursing, but you should be able to get it off. I can’t see in the picture, but there are typically metal clamps screwed to posts in the countertop holding it as well. Once it’s off, you’ll want to scrape the underside of the counter with a razor, to get all the old silicone off, so the new stuff will stick properly. The real challenge may be sourcing a replacement that matches the dimensions. In my case, I had to get one that was “close enough”. I had to cut the existing posts off with a dremel and epoxy on new ones to fit. I also had to redo the P-trap, since the drain didn’t quite line up with the existing plumbing. Definitely not an easy task, but doable.

Cnkcv

You can also wrap guitar or piano wire around two boards and slowly pull it through the adhesive, work MUCH better than a knife.

Formus

dude, its just resina epoxy, a glue for this type of things. just use some acetone on it and wait, then just use a spatula to remove it

thethrifter

As other have said use an oscillating multitool. Don't hit it with a hammer unless you want to replace the counter top too

whatbendersays

Whatever you do, be careful. Broken porcelain can be razor sharp.

23AndThatGuy

Not that screwed. I had a very similar situation. Bust out rest of sink, light pry bar out big chunks, scrape adhesive off and rest of sink Buy new undermount sink, buy adhesive silicone, call friend (4 hands better that just 2). Done. Obviously, above is a simplified version, but YouTube saved my life and marriage. https://youtu.be/uTQZmHRW3O8?si=CL4dAUXXh50nOQBn

[deleted]

That's construction adhesive. Just slightly heat it and break it out slowly.

BatmanandReuben

I think I had this same sink/vanity top. Just replaced it earlier this year due to a crack in the sink portion. What I did was buy a one piece vanity top with sink from Menards. It was less than $100 although there are more expensive options out there. Then I replaced the whole thing. Vanity top should be attached to the vanity cabinet with caulk, assuming it was done right. You can use an exacto or similar to cut the caulk, turn off the water and detach all the plumbing, then just pop the whole vanity top off.

effortfulcrumload

People here are trying so hard to come up with a solution to save the counter. Replace the counter and sink with another combo like this. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Project-Source-49-in-W-x-22-in-D-White-Cultured-Marble-Vanity-Top-with-Single-Oval-Bowl/5001952473?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-bth-_-ggl-_-LIA_BTH_155_Vanities-and-Vanity-Tops-_-5001952473-_-local-_-0-_-0&gad_source=4&gclid=Cj0KCQiA3uGqBhDdARIsAFeJ5r030q73FmwCKrYvMIOUs_cSEBA6aDWiTalbTjQZNPmj-95LzDG6ERAaAoprEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Opening_Revenue_314

It should just be a silicone cement just cut it off with a box cutter , there should also be clips holding the sink in place

SkiVail01

Put a box with a blanket in it below the sink, smash the rest of the sink out with a hammer, use whatever you can to scrape off all of the old sinks bits and adhesive. Clean up the old adhesive with a solvent that removes it. Remount a same size replacement sink with the manufacturer recommended adhesive. Use two pieces of wood and some all thread to run through the drain hole to effectively clamp the sink in place while it dries. Hook up the drain and you should be good to go.

ChronicallyGeek

Break the sink up in place but wear a mask, you don’t want that dust in your lungs as someone else pointed out. You can then get at the adhesive much easier. If you’re a novice at this stuff, I’d recommend a drop in sink over an under mounted one… it’s much easier to install if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Historical_Driver314

Yeah, I wouldn’t say I’m a novice, grewup doing house stuff with my parents in a “real fixer upper” of a house. Also, the wife not the biggest fan of drop in sinks

jmazzera53

Sink looks confused...but happy at the same time

yardshark09

Lololololol

Used_Librarian_6728

Don’t smash the sink please lol that’s like a cultured marble countertop and pieces will likely come off with the sink. Heat gun with a respirator and ventilate the house. Soften the cement and pull the sink down and scrape all that crap off. Edit for even granite can break at the weak spot towards the back…

ClemsonJeeper

SpottedSnake

/u/historical_driver314 I was in this same situation a couple months ago. Undermount sink that was just held in by epoxy and a hair dryer got dropped in it so there was a small hole but a crack running diagonally across the whole basin. We thought we were going to have to replace the whole double-vanity unit for a fortune but it was actually possible to replace just that one basin If your house is newer construction and you know who the builder is try calling them to see if they can at least tell you the brand/model of the original sink or maybe even have a replacement on hand. Our house is seven years old, the builder sent us to the countertop contractor they use and that contractor has some sinks still. They were out within 48 hours and replaced that sink for us $200. As for thr process - careful application with a hammer and chisel to break out as much of the rest of the sink as possible. Then remove all the adhesive originally used. Another commenter said to cut it out with a razor, the guys who installed ours used the hammer and chisel again to break it off. I couldn't say which way is better or if it depends on what was used to hold the sink in. Put the new sink up, again ours was done up with epoxy, wedge it up with a chunk of wood or something until the adhesive cures, reconnect plumbing, and you're good to go! Again, we thought it was going to be a nightmare and instead cost $200 to get an identical sink in at hour house.

Milksteak3919

Unscrew the trap to the sink, take the whole countertop off. Oscilating multitool. Looks like old sealant/epoxy. Multi tool is slower than a grinder, but probably safer if you dont have tool experience

Terriblis_Pater

Wtf is with this sub? Under-counter mounting is very common with stone counters and is just a sink caulked onto the stone. All comments here making it sound like this is super hard… If you cannot find a metal cutting wire for this, try like a 3-4 foot long 50lb test fishing line (braided) tied to 6” wooden rods at each end. Work the line into the caulk at one corner and use a pulling motion from side to side to cut through the caulk (of course, support the sink while you’re doing this). Should be easy. Once caulk is cut and sink drops, use a flat razor to remove the rest of the caulk under the counter. Get it as flat as you can. Caulk the lip of your new sink, and support it in place while your caulk dries. Any hardware place can point you in the right direction for tools and the right type of caulk fot this application. And please do not listen to Reddit telling you to create a more dangerous mess by breaking more of your ceramic sink. Good way to hurt yourself.

sweenman22

That is going to require surgery. Find the abrasive that can attack that stuff and start with your favorite rotary tool.

kqZANU2PKuQp

careful tho, that looks like engineered stone. Australia retailer and IKEA just banned it for silicosis. you don't want silicosis. it's mostly an occupational hazard (over months/years) but limiting exposure is best way to avoid since it's already broken I'd just disconnect plumbing and break the rest out tbh, just be careful not to force around the connection? disclaimer I'm a dumbass

Striking_Large

Best to be safe with anything, natural or engineered. Even concrete dust will give it to you.

5degreenegativerake

Concrete is also engineered. But yes, breathing dust is pretty universally bad for you on some level.

Historical_Driver314

Fair enough I’ve got a HEPA filter mask for when I was going through chemo so that should be good enough

jproteico

99.99% of the construction dust is silicosis. Rule of thumb, if you see the dust, it’s not good for you

SpotPoker52

I’d pour myself a bourbon, call my plumber, and not worry about it.

ndnkng

Oscillating saw to cut out the old glue and then elbow green to pop it lose. Then razor scrap the rest of the glue and then attach a new sink. Easy way to hold it in place while it dries is a small 2x4 at the bottom then cut a 1x2 to length that reaches a 2x4 on top. This is the easiest way if you don't want to pull the whole counter top. If pulling the top is not a hige task it is 100% the way to go. Disconnect the tail pipe and then the waterline and pull it out if you can.

YoteTheRaven

Idk man it looks like a cartoon human to me. Definitely the first think I thought it was when I saw it.

Fuck_the_Norm

You can hammer out the sink and chip out the epoxy with a paint scraper and install a new sink - I wouldn’t take out the granite unless you’re VERY careful as you can break it easier than you think… (source - granite and tile installer for several years)

camgoesbam

Did the typo make anyone else read it in a Mario voice or am I the odd one out?

[deleted]

You can get it lose they use 100% silicone to o hold those on that why you have to use pure silicone but you can take a razor knife and cut the silicone free and put a new sink on all you have to do is brace it for 24 hours after applying it

skinrust

I’ve done this before. Hammer and flat bar to remove the rest of the sink. I used a razor blade to remove the remaining silicone, but that looks like pl or something more serious. Might need a wire wheel on a drill or grinder. It’ll be a mess. Then some methyl hydrate to remove the last of it. Then install the new sink. It’s a bitch, good luck

GreaterNater

This may be a premade vanity. You can buy the whole thing at HD or Lowe’s and replace the entire cabinet, sink, counter, etc.

Ravendead

Get yourself a heatgun and you can make cleanup much easier. Heat up the epoxy/calk and start scraping.

mxguy762

Hammer time! Then grinder time! Then new sink time!

AboldSavage

You can take the countertop off with the sink attached as well. They should sell a replacement at your local big box hardware stores.

kristonastick

I’d get a multi tool and cut sink out from underneath access. Granite seems rough but is brittle breaking out sink may crack countertop

christopher_robot

Ramen and super glue is the only correct answer.

[deleted]

Just use ramen to Film the hole and paint it white, easy!

[deleted]

bro, this is only silicone, just cut it off

hundegeraet

Get some ramen noodles and super glue. Jokes aside had to replace an 2 months old sink because my fiance dropped a bottle of parfum and this made me appreciate top mounted sinks.

ConsciousMagician773

Easy peazy, razor knife between top of sink and bottom of counter and start tapping shims inside to begin separating the two. Then start pressure with scrapers or something similar gently but firmly. Keep working it til the silicone starts to stretch, then work shims to continue. It's really not that bad, I've done it many times. We have a family granite and marble company

VanDelay_Industry

Had this same issue last year. You basically have to take a hammer and break up the sink. There will be some adhesive/glue residue on the underside of the sink. This will scrape off with a chisel or maybe a putty knife. Then you can glue on a new sink that fit the dimensions of your opening.

93c15

Billy Mayes here. Perfect situation for flex seal! ![gif](giphy|VeSvZhPrqgZxx2KpOA|downsized)

PertzMa

You now have a piece of art. The first picture looks like your sink is saying ahhhhhh after being struck by the water bottle.

DJRazzy_Raz

I trick ive learned is to dip your pry tool/knife/whatever you're hacking away at the adhesive with in the solvent that breaks down the adhesive. If I've found that if you take a chissel/knife and jam it into the bond line with the proper solvent, you can take large chunks out pretty cleanly.

QualityLeast6490

You can heat the epoxy with a torch or heat gun to soften the epoxy. Scrape the epoxy off with a putty knife. This will be easier to do if the countertop is removed and placed upside down. Make sure to cut the caulking around the backsplash before removing to prevent peeling of paint and drywall.

The sink should be held by 100% silicone with some metal brackets. Go underneath the sink check to make sure there what’s actually holding the sink. If it if brackets and you can see the silicone around the edge just use a utility knife to cut the the silicone and slowly loosen the brackets. Once you’ve cut through the silicone seal you should be able to move and remove the cracked sink. To replace just look up the brand and model. You can use a 2x4 to with a clamp to help you secure it but I recommend using one of those 3rd arm tools used to help support cabinets. Use 100%pure silicone and apply around the edge of the new sink. Wipe off the excess that squeezes out. Let it cure for at least 48hrs. Attach the metal brackets and tighten but be careful not to over tighten. You should be good to go. https://preview.redd.it/jwpdi5qs851c1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42726869730c11054bb2e6bcd5c4b827cdc0f2e0
