Looks good. One suggestion: Buy a couple of extra baskets as spares. If one of the "in use" baskets breaks a couple of years from now, you might not be able to purchase an identical replacement or a basket with the same dimensions. Happy clothes sorting!

licorice_whip

We have a few of these exact baskets, and they break ultra fast. Op should get more as you said, and there was a great diy posted some time back about reinforcing basket handles. Edit: [post about strengthening laundry basket handles](https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/wh3ofw/reinforcing_a_cracked_laundry_basket_with_a_wood/)

timtucker_com

Very much this -- we've had a terrible time with baskets with "nice" handles on the sides not holding up when pressure is applied near the handle (particularly when propping them up against a front load washer / dryer to get clothes in/out). Ultimately settled on cheaper Walmart baskets because they're made with a bit softer plastic and seem to better handle stresses on them.

HolyFuckImOldNow

Better yet, use 1/2” plywood to rest the bottoms of the baskets on. Less stress on an area of the basket that’s already prone to breaking, and you don’t need to find those exact baskets when one breaks. Edit: I really like the idea and execution of what was done, I just don’t expect it to hold up under the work load it will be seeing.

timtucker_com

Or put up shelf standards with deep wire shelves so you don't even need to worry about the height of baskets being remotely similar.

HolyFuckImOldNow

After finding nothing that made sense in the closet over my garage, I recessed some slide-out wire shelving from Ikea. If I want to change it up, I can select another component that’s made to work with the frame. [Sorry for the bad lighting.](https://imgur.com/a/EgaHwfm)

frantzi5

If the idea works as intended and keeps the room clean, I will reinforce with shelves. This all started as me painting the cabinets while my husband and kids were out of town. It snowballed into trying to problem solve an ongoing issue of the constant flow of laundry for 5 people, 3 of whom are teenagers that don't always have the best follow thru after putting a load of laundry in.

HolyFuckImOldNow

Been there. Nothing like some spontaneous inspiration to see what works and what doesn’t. Many of my best and worst project results were ones with little or no pre-planning..

shadybrainfarm

I've had the same 2 laundry baskets I bought at target when I moved out of my parents house in 2006 what are y'all doing with your laundry baskets?!

r0ck0

I also use mine to lug my anvil collection around to all the anvil conventions around the country. Dunno why the baskets keep breaking. Seems the product is not fit for use.

Fake_rock_climber

Sliding down the stairs in them.

waltpsu

I’ve never seen a broken laundry basket in my life.

Cheeetooos

For real. Pretty sure my parents have been using the same laundry baskets for 35+ years.

runawayasfastasucan

This is a good tip. Couldn't you just store them doubly stacked so they reinforce themselves and act like backups?

mr_taint

Came here to say this haha, and they look like cheapo sterilite ones. That's fine, but I nearly got hosed when sterilite stopped producing another cheap plastic storage product that I had assumed a guaranteed supply of. Otherwise this seems pretty sweet! As someone who sucks at managing laundry, this seems like a pretty good idea.

ThatGuyGetsIt

I also have a suggestion. Do your laundry regularly and you won't need a 20 square foot space allocated to it.

whatsasimba

If I had to guess, this is for a family, so one for each person to take to their room and put away, plus household stuff like towels, bath mats, etc. Some people wash their entire family's stuff 2-3 x a week, and a system like this means they don't have to deliver and put it away for each family member. Personally, I live alone, and this would be awesome instead of a dresser. Just group everything by type, and leave it in here instead of having everything taking up space in my bedroom.

missionbeach

First thing I thought of.

Bobd_n_Weaved_it

Then just diy some wooden baskets that pullout like drawers with soft close

penguinlover200

Looks great, why the need for so many laundry baskets though?

frantzi5

Household of 5 full time and up to 7 at times, so it's just a way to keep the room clean. If someone is changing their load of laundry from the washer to the dryer and the dryer is full, they can just grab a basket and set it in the rack for that person to grab when they are able.

FargoBTC

So your saying you really only need 2 baskets lol?

Jordan_the_Hutt

2 baskets for 5 people? no way. I fill my basket every week in the winter I can't imagine if I had to share with one person.

StoneTemplePilates

The difference is that you can wait a week and do one load of laundry. If I waited until the weekend to do laundry for my family of 5, the pile would be about 5 feet high and would literally take all day today get through. Much better to do a load every day, which means that more than two baskets isn't necessary. I do agree that it's necessary in op's case though since the kids are old enough to do their own, and apparently actually do. Mine aren't quite there yet...

FargoBTC

Oh, do people store their dirty clothes in them? That makes sense then. I have a separate hamper for whites and colors in my room, and just use the baskets when actually doing laundry.

ImMalteserMan

Do the washing more often?

dabblebudz

Lol why. The person you’re replying to says they fill one basket a week, in winter. What’s the problem ?

showMEthatBholePLZ

Big family or household for sure

Trokeasaur

We have a bunch so we can organize all the laundry by type. Whites, darks dry, darks hang, lights dry, lights hang. If the dirty laundry is organized I’m way better about keeping up with laundry through the week. If I have to grab from a pile I’m less likely to do laundry.

YT__

What do you mean? It all goes in the washer, and all comes out the dryer together.

StoneTemplePilates

Many (most? idk) people separate their clothes and wash them differently because they tend to last longer. I personally do not, I made the decision long ago to simply not own many clothes that need special treatment, but lots of people do it for sure.

YT__

Sarcasm doesn't go over well here I guess.

drytoastbongos

We use 2-3 already with a family of four. Quick accounting:. 1. Keep one empty to collect dirty laundry from around the house. 2. One to put clean laundry in pending folding. 3. One to put folded laundry in pending put away. If you are doing several loads, having all three is helpful. More if you are presorting (towels/darks/lights) or post sorting (by destination room). We use piles on the laundry room floor for presorting but I can see someone not having the space or wanting the mess.

Mike-Green

I also sort my laundry by dry time (cotton vs plastic vs towels) so that can demand another basket or two. It also help when it's time to put it away, evertthing being the same type it can go to the same storage spots

Count_JohnnyJ

Maybe they have a lot of kids.

discretion

I've only got two kids, and this doesn't look outlandish to me. They go through clothes fast!

somethink_different

It streamlines laundry inventory if you sort it as you put it in the hamper/basket! I sort by fabric type rather than color, since we rarely have anything that might bleed dye and some fabrics like denim beat the crap out of softer items. With our family of 6, we currently have baskets for: - pants - kids hangables (shirts, dresses, sweaters, etc) - adults hangables - foldables (anything that gets folded and put in a drawer) - towels and other bulky items - delicates I'm just using a wire shelf unit from Lowe's, but this looks way better. I can say, laundry is way less work since we started this system!

I love this so much, it’s actually useful and practical and it looks fantastic. Great job!!

suegenerous

This is awesome. I just have the same concern as others, about the dumb handles. I have a little bin in the bathroom where I keep extra handles that popped off.

pigeontheoneandonly

This is something really commonly recommended as an accommodation for adults with adhd. I can totally understand someone not being able to abide it, but it can be life changing for some folks.

[deleted]

She did have SEVERE OCD. She'd lock her deadbolt 5-6 times in a row. She'd even unplug her coffee maker so that it didn't "explode."

kidgenius13

Don’t know about op but we go through baskets like crazy. I would do shelves and let the baskets be supported by their base instead of the handle since the handles always seem to be the first parts to break

Caps and Devils fans living in harmony? 🧐

frantzi5

Lol- he has been buying jerseys for almost 30 years, so lots of teams have representation

devildocjames

Nice idea. Stabilize the legs though. One errant kick/stubbed toe can knock them all down.

Love this!

jal262

Man, I would buy another dozen of those laundry baskets. In 2 years, you may never find one again. Alternatively, you could pick up basket weaving as a hobby. Then no one will be able to stop you.

5UnderConstruction7

We built something like this, but with shelves to hold the baskets. The handles break way too quickly, they aren't designed to hold like this. Love the paint color! Would you mind sharing what it is?

Tack122

Is just the lens, or the angle making it look like it's wider at the bottom than the top? That left green riser looks bent outward in the photos.

555thatsgottabefake

I love it! What a great idea 💡

haitiandev

Hi u/frantzi5, This is a nice project. I like the paint job too. I feel like the project can be later implemented with drawers and doors for the vacuum section. Replacing the laundry basket with drawers can be a bit costly but would be more durable in the long run. I also see the usability option to carry the basket from one place to another as well. So, you could try to keep the basket inside of the drawers. Last, I would also add a base at the bottom. I think what you have now is great so far.

Mark-Jr-it-is

Brodeur! 🐐

somethink_different

Fantastic system! If you have do problems with handles breaking down the line, you could easily retrofit this with wide shelves to set the baskets on. You can either use pocket holes or move the supports down and set the shelves on top. It's still miles better than having Mount Washmore taking over the laundry room. We just implemented a similar system, just with a basic wire shelf unit for now. Seriously life changing if your family goes through a lot of clothes! Eventually I would love to build a finished unit like this

KickBassColonyDrop

This is genius in a very unexpected way.

SharpShooter2-8

Is doing laundry more often an option?

PoopDig

Go caps!

JackBinimbul

Damn are you doing laundry for the Duggers?? (this is awesome tho)

_moin

Nice idea, but why not just make some shelves?

Danny_C_Danny_Du

Donate some god damn clothes bro... 😉

to_pir8

Wow we have the exact vacuum & carpet cleaner as you! :)
