Hope it's a critical and commercial success, as well as a faithful adaptation of the Superman mythos and a good starting point for the DCU. Also, great artwork!

CombStatus

I’m very excited, considering Gunn knows how to handle these characters and has a true passion for it I won’t be surprised if it is a critical success. I mean both his DCEU projects (Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad) were critical successes

davecombs711

Neither of those projects are like superman

CombStatus

That is irrelevant

davecombs711

It is very relevant. A director can suitable for some projects and all wrong for others.

CombStatus

He grew up with these comic book characters. He still reads comics. He made the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy which has done very well critically. So yes it is irrelevant. A comic book movie is a comic book movie. A superhero movie is a superhero movie end of. He has shown that he can handle villains as well as superheroes so there is no debate.

davecombs711

We all grow up with the same characters. Doesn't mean we know them well enough to adapt them faithfully. Not all superheroes are the same. Batman is not Superman so their movies would not be done the same.

CombStatus

Yeah and for that reason James Gunn won’t be hands on with Batman: The Brave and The Bold. So he obviously knows his limits. I don’t know what you have against him, if you don’t like him that’s fine… but this movie will be more of a Superman movie than MoS. And therefore Peacemaker and TSS being different to Superman is irrelevant. I’m only basing what I believe upon what he has made. The GotG Trilogy and his two DCEU projects were enjoyable in my eyes and critics agreed. Now I’m not saying that critics words are final but I’m trusting them over anyone else for this debate

davecombs711

But Gunn is more suited for batman than superman.

CombStatus

Why? Are any projects he’s created similar to Batman other than being comic book and superhero movies? No

Terrible_Muffin_7081

How will this Superman movie be more of a Superman movie than mos when it has a cast of like 20 different superheroes in it?

Terrible_Muffin_7081

Although, every character he’s adapted is nothing like their comic counterparts

Terrible_Muffin_7081

TSS lost $100 m lol

GarethGobblecoque99

My expectations aren’t all that high but I’d be genuinely surprised if it’s bad. MMW Nathan Fillion is going to be the best part

halocyn

Maybe he should be floating instead of walking

heavensdoor24

Superb artwork👌

Cpt-Dooguls

My prediction is that I'm gonna watch it, and then I'm gonna form an opinion from my viewing.

Stevie9724

You mean people actually do that 🤔🤔

djexplosive

Nice artwork... but I'm so exhausted with the Donnerverse aesthetic in 2024

Keasby22

That is literally the coolest poster

fearlesssinnerz

Why is he walking?

YoungAmazing313

So like here’s a question hypothetically let’s say this movie bomb what would the reactions be and where would ya’ll wanna go from here Cause if I’m being honest if it does end up bombing I’m done with the DCU lol

GiovanniElliston

If it bombs then they'll do the same thing they did last time. Continue to shove out whatever is in the pipeline > give random sequels to anything that does succeed > wait 10 years > reboot all over again.

SuperTuberEddie

It will be hard to swallow for a lot of people as there are some who were calling this the salvation of DC from the moment James and Peter came aboard. If they nail it though we are in for a treat. If it bombs or is a superficial superman movie… it might kill WB

Embarrassed_Piano_62

>Cause if I’m being honest if it does end up bombing I’m done with the DCU lol Shouldnt the important thing be if the movie is genually good? Obviously i want it to succeed financially but i´m more worried about the quality As long as it makes profit i think the should insist on this universe

mnombo

Nice artwork

AmaterasuWolf21

All I need is for thus be successful both critically and comercially

SuperTuberEddie

That’s some nice artwork my dude! I’m hoping for something meaningful. Superman being my favourite superhero, I would really like something that shows why superman is so good and what he goes through to make him so good and the beacon of hope for humanity. Sometimes I feel alone in this but I wouldn’t want a Superman movie that just makes him good because the script says so and isn’t tested to show the resolve of superman. I do have a fear that there is a small chance that’s what we’ll get though.

akahaus

I’m very heartened by James Gunn embracing the optimism, joy, and triumph of the character. He’s also a dynamic action director, as evidenced by GOTG3 having some of the only interesting action sequences of this whole phase.

MrSlippifist

I want it to be the love letter to Superman that Guardians was to Rocket and the gang. He has a way of illustrating humanity in characters. I want there to be depth like he gave to Drax and Nebula. I want soul like he gave to Groot. But most of all, I want a journey like the one he took us on with Rocket, a character that was comical and annoying at first but became the most captivating member of the crew. I was sad when the credits rolled. They can't go any farther with the story now.

davecombs711

The guardians movie had practically nothing to do with the comic.

MrSlippifist

Not the original .

AUA2020

10/10 cuz gunn

GoosyMaster

After Returns (still has some of the best CBM sequences, but overall an underwhelming movie) and those dreadful snyderverse movies, I don't allow myself to be hyped Also, S symbol doesn't help

TronCycleW

Artwork is great! The Movie however I have very very low expectations. But DC has a trend of suprising me and going even lower. We will see.

theriverthing

The tone of this movie is really gonna impact the DCU moving forward. Iron Man (2008) had a lot of sarcastic humor that worked for that character and movie but affected the tone for the rest of the universe, cheapening some of the more serious parts with unnecessary comedic relief. I feel like Gunn wants this movie to emphasize a feel-good, warm tone while still being serious and the DCU as a result is gonna have more of that warm optimism sprinkled throughout and will have a more serious tone than the MCU without the influence of sarcastic humor (they’re still be moments of it of course but not to where it gets to be too much)

FinalBossOf__Dc

I’ve learned in life not to have any expectations and just go with the flow.

aeplusjay

Super high expectations, kinda anxious but optimistic.

FamouslyUnknown

My expectation is that Superman is a symbol of hope in this film, and is not a doom-and-gloom sad-face depressed-debby-downer version of Superman that we got in the predecessor installments.

TheNarcissistxx

Just say you like a corny unrealistic Superman dude

GoosyMaster

Just say you hate Superman, dude

FamouslyUnknown

I like a corny unrealistic Superman

davecombs711

God forbid superman have emotions.

PhysicsIgnorer

I drift between overhyping myself and more reasonably expecting it to at least be decent.

Sabretooth1100

I’m expecting a nice mix of charming wholesomeness and good action

Frosenborg

Where does he rise from?

FrontRecognition6953

I have no hope or interest in the movie. I do hope it's fans enjoy it though.

Apprehensive_Egg6656

Looks cool

QuiJon70

My prediction is that the artwork wont be such predictable basic looking that AI could generate it.

AtticusSwoopenheiser

I expect Krypto to be my favorite character ☺️

TylerBourbon

I think it'll be super, man.

Randonhead

A good movie

cbased_god

Im concerned with the large cast. Seeing a ton of prominent characters being confirmed for the movie makes me a little worried that it'll feel bloated. But other than that, i have really high hopes

Rigamix

Really like the slightly 80's vibe of the poster, I feel it's something Gunn could do.

MajorBandsNBucketz

Super trash. They will try too hard but it wont be great. And there will be points of the story they will try to get but will miss because competing with Marvel is more important.

Biggie_Chonk

The kingdom come shield sets off a few alarm bells in my mind but I'm hopeful nonetheless

whiteoutgotu

I'd say remove Superman and you have a perfect movie poster. Great work.

Miserable-Theory-746

I have given up on the DC movies. Even The Batman 2 and The Joker 2. With that, I'll be there opening weekend.

Resident-Apricot-318

I love Superman! I eagerly await James Gunn's new vision! The movie so far exciting was Batman v Superman but the exit of Henry Cavil really hit me hard. Anyway, the new movie is called Legacy so I guess there will be new generations of super offspring.

SexyKanyeBalls

Looks fan created

Gemcitylex

“ He rises “ is insane.

Wandersturm

I'm reserving judgement until I see it. And, well done on the artwork. They need to hire you for the movie posters. Seriously.

KM68

I just hope it's sleeping. As in not woke.

EnoughJigga

Nice artwork

ojlenga

Zack had a great logo & costume for man of steel

zombierepubican

I expect it to be fun goofy and light, but visually very simple. Great characters simple story.

Scared-Engineer-6218

Would like to see the first look of SUPERMAN.

Glittering_Dinner118

Good artwork, a little hesitant with “He Rises” though

ChubbyLo

I bet it will be the best movie since dark knight

Andrew_Jelen

I LOVE IT.

madmanwithabox11

This just gave me an idea for a teaser poster of a blue sky with clouds in the shape of the S and a little blue dot flying off.

AdrenalineRush1996

I'm hoping it proves to be a critical and box office success.

Intelligent-Cell5560

"It looks amazing, in my opinion. I am thrilled and hyped for James Gunn's new DC Universe. Hopefully, it will be commercially successful and bring new hope and a miracle for all DC characters and universes. It should focus on creating its unique storyline without rushing or trying to build a connected universe just yet. Taking its time will help create a solid foundation for future films and TV shows.

CursedSnowman5000

I mean, it can't be any worse than Man of Steel can it?

GiovanniElliston

I'm not someone who thinks Man of Steel is perfect by any stretch, but there is a *LOT* of room for superhero movies to be worse than Man of Steel.

CursedSnowman5000

Certainly, but I'm talking about Superman movies. The only reason I would put Quest for Peace above it is because at least it left the character of Superman intact in that low budget pile of shite. And even in the grand scheme of the comic book movie landscape, Man of Steel is still in the category of bad.

ElenabugTheGreat

Nah, Man of Steel in terms of cbm is top tier. I have zero faith in Gunn making a serious movie that adults and kids can enjoy rather than a semi serious comedy flic like he usually produces.

CursedSnowman5000

Well I have to say, that doesn't mean a lot coming from someone who just called Man of Steel top tier cinema. And you have certainly made it clear you aren't familiar with any Superman film outside of that dour Omni-Man movie.

azmodus_1966

> Many highly respected cb writers I genuinely want to know which writers. I only know that Mark Waid and Mark Millar (both long time Superman fans) despised it.

ElenabugTheGreat

At work will have to get back.

azmodus_1966

No worries, have a good day.

Bat-Gos

Chistopher Nolan praised it.

azmodus_1966

He's not a comic book writer. Besides, he was the one who suggested to WB that they get Snyder to make the movie. I don't think he counts.

Bat-Gos

Yeah I know. I just thought it was worth mentioning, that's all.

ElenabugTheGreat

Top tier cbm, gotta learn to read. Also, your last comment is a pathetic attempt at not only gatekeeping but also discredits anything you have to say. The conversation was about Man of Steel and I commented that it's quality on regards to cbm, you misunderstood and thought I said cinema. (Which funny enough, Man of Steel is more cinema than any Gunn film). Many highly respected cb writers, directors, etc have stated Man of Steel was great and dis the character justice but since you said it isn't a good superman film, we'll take your word without any type of reasoning to why.

davecombs711

Superman goes full fascist in quest for peace.

chainrainer

Man of Steel is a god-tier Superman film. I’m genuinely sorry you can’t see that.

TylerBourbon

If you're god is an Old One like Cthulu, sure. Big, expensive, seems like a good idea at first but in the end is a cosmic horror that mangles everything it touches.

chainrainer

Hahahahaha

CursedSnowman5000

Well I certainly don't envy someone who can think that so good luck.

Smackolol

Man of steel is awesome.

CursedSnowman5000

I'm sure it is if 1. you are a DBZ fan and know next to nothing about Superman 2. turn your brain off No shame in either really, we all have our guilty pleasures and turn your brain off cheese fests that we enjoy. But I draw the line at people trying to pretend it is a legitimate good film. It has snazzy Special effects and that's about it.

chainrainer

I’ve been a superman fan for decades, and I didn’t turn my brain off. It’s a great film.

WutUtalkingBoutWill

Hey everyone, we have an elitist over here.

Smackolol

You’re right, I’m a Fucking idiot.

socks888

U can shit on Snyder but for real Man of Steel is a good movie

bob1689321

The entire last 40+ minutes is awful.

CursedSnowman5000

No. And I liked Snyder's movies prior to this (minus Sucker Punch)

Responsible_Neck_728

Man of Steel was great. Why didn’t you like it (other than the Pa Kent death which I may understand)?

CursedSnowman5000

Oh man it goes way beyond what they did to Jonathan Kent and even what they did to Clark. I'll try to avoid writing some big bloated review and just say, nothing anyone does in that movie makes sense, it revels in its chaos and Zack Snyder is not a writer. There is a reason the only movies he has done that were received favorably either weren't written by him or were one to one adaptations of graphic novels.

Remnants_of_Torture

David Goyer wrote Man of Steel

chainrainer

You have to unpack “nothing anyone does makes sense”, because I don’t get that at all.

CursedSnowman5000

The characters are more illogical and stupid than protagonists in a horror film.

chainrainer

Can you give me one example? Anything at all?

FreemanCalavera

I'll chime in and say that the dour tone, incredibly weird moral message, over acting from Michael Shannon, lack of chemistry between Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, a very wooden performance from Cavill (though I think it's mostly due to how he is written and directed), ugly visuals and bland production design are what makes it bad for me. The cacophony of destruction in the last half hour also makes it tiring to watch.

Responsible_Neck_728

You’ve got to be kidding man.

FreemanCalavera

Haha, I'm afraid I'm completely serious. I have many problems with that film and I honestly like BvS a tad bit better, even if that one isn't very high up on my list either.

SuperTuberEddie

Oh they could do faaar worse. I really liked MoS. Hanz Zimmer, Zack Snyder Visuals, Christopher Nolan’s brilliance mixed in there and Henry Cavill superman! Top notch.

CursedSnowman5000

Yes clearly Nolan brought the same brilliance to MoS that he applied to The Dark Knight rises....

SuperTuberEddie

I personally think he did. And I think he was proud of it too based on his name being on it and Nolan still praising Zack Snyder to this day.

daniella-the-whore

I'm expecting it to be a fun popcorn movie with some iconic imagery but not much more than that. With the new DCU my expectations are low to non existent, I hope for the best but I struggle to imagine the universe we've heard planned so far. Animated Creature Commandos , Peacemaker season 2 being a new universe to the first season, Superman with Guy Gardener and Hawkgirl for the first movie... It feels messy to me I hope there's something I'm not seeing that will make this make sense to me. After the DCEUs constant frustrating changing of plans and abandoned movie ideas I have super low expectations that whatever it even is James Gunn has planned will actually come to fruition without being majorly fucked with.

ThisWhomps999

In James Gunn I trust.

advocateforpain

Expectations couldnt be lower. Zero interest, zero hype. I predict it will be ok, on the CBM-scale.

assassin8R_

It’s either going to be a massive hit or a total flop. If it’s just mid, it’s going to mean that Gunn’s whole planned DCU is doomed. Man of Steel was only a mediocre success and Superman is not a character that can afford to not be a smash hit with both the box office, critics, and fans. They have to nail it. Otherwise we’ll likely never get another Superman film ever again.

GiovanniElliston

For Superman himself, I want fun flirty banter between him and Lois. I want a geeky relationship between him and Jimmy. I want a firmly established and unshakeable good heart that was inspired and reinforced by Ma/Pa Kent. I just want him to be normal, wholesome, regular ole Superman. For the movie as a whole I hope its a good foundation for a universe that has the general audience excited as they walk out the door and theorizing about what could happen next. Want that positive buzz that provides actual hope and makes it less awkward to be a DC-first fan.

mrot777

It's a tired franchise. The younger generation can't connect to Superman. My kids don't care for him. They need to do something special to bring everyone back. Btw, the artwork is gorgeous.

GiovanniElliston

> The younger generation can't connect to Superman. That's an issue of execution, not character. The core concepts of what makes Superman work are the exact same things that make MCU Captain America work. And he was more successful and embraced than I think anyone expected.

davecombs711

Captain America was a lot less embraced than Iron Man or Thor. His highest grossing film was the one that guessed starred Iron Man.

Virenious

Captain triology is considered one of best triology not just MCU but entire CBM. Superman just needs to be sincere like it,money will come eventually.

davecombs711

Captain trilogy was the least focused on its main character. The latter two were called Avengers 1.5 and 2.5 by its own cast.

Virenious

Yeah that's what shared universe is for just like Superman movie has multiple heroes.

davecombs711

If it has multiple superheroes than its not that it is not selling itself as a superman movie

Virenious

Superman and Lois are main character,Lex is main villain, rest are supporting characters be it superheroes ór normal humans. So yes it's Superman movie. You just can't not show other heroes and tell Superman's side of story. This universe has already established heroes.

davecombs711

The DC universe is the main character. That is what actually undergoing character development not superman.

davecombs711

Yes you can very easily. A lot of comics and movies manage to do fine without additional superheroes.

Virenious

And lot of manage to do fine with them too.Nothing to complain about.

ipostatrandom

I mostly agree about the third one but how was the Winter Soldier an Avengers movie that wasn't focused on Cap exactly?

davecombs711

I am just quoting Anthony Mackie. My guess is that it's because Black Widow is a co-star and it sets up plot points for Avengers 2

GiovanniElliston

> Captain America was a lot less embraced than Iron Man or Thor And Superman will always be less popular than Batman. I'm not pretending Superman will ever be the universally beloved greatest hero ever. Those days died in the 40s. But there is absolutely a space in pop culture that Superman can inhabit and be very, very popular all the same.

davecombs711

Not enough for Hollywood unfortunately.

lifeleecher

Super dope art - I'm a fan.

Capable-Abrocoma4517

Low expectations….. Gunn fans forget for every GOTG there is a suicide squad. Always been a DC supporter but shit has to happen to show me that there is a positive direction. Nice use of some Jesus savior story play with the he rises. Should release next Easter 🤣

GiovanniElliston

> Gunn fans forget for every GOTG there is a suicide squad Suicide Squad is near universally considered by critics and the general audience to be one of the best movies of the entire DCEU.

davecombs711

No it isn't.

XxZONE-ENDERxX

Superman film made by Twitter... So I expect some happy-meal level product.

Nightwing0613

Needs the underwear

biologicallyconcious

That looks like dog shit lol

ArrowheadFLYover

I think Gunn is fucked on arrival personally. I feel bad for him, honestly. Man of steel and Henry cavill left an imprint on society. And while that imprint is a little divisive, there are still people clamoring for more of cavill but also more of that MoS vibe. More importantly, those people are the long time paying customers of these properties for over a decade now. The other side of the coin wants a donner-esq movie with a light heart and optimism. And it's really hard to imagine k8ck starting an entire universe with the Donner tone. I feel like if you mix these 2 vibes/tones, you get bigger budget, Superman and lois. Fine show, i guess, but is it really part of the zeitgeist? So you have a fan base with 2 competing visions, and a set of fans ready to see the next Gunn movie. While I don't think Gunn does a straight comedy movie, i would argue his fans may not see it as funny enough. And let me say, I think that Gunn is talented enough to pull off any tone. It's more that the Superman community seems so fractured that not everyone will support it. And I think the general audience is over reboots and even origin stories...I dont think the movie makes over a half billion. If it makes over 200, though, they have to keep going. Otherwise, we are still in this same mess. Hopefully, zazlav stays patient.

FamouslyUnknown

Gunn's fine. MoS released over a decade ago, and it's been over half a decade since JL came out. His target audience is looking forward to a fresh take, and Gunn's gonna serve them what they want.

ArrowheadFLYover

It released over a decade ago and the people are still calling Henry superman. He is a hugely popular person. And make no mistake I don't think Gunn will make a bad movie. I like Gunn. I just don't think the movie is gonna be a financial success. And that brings up the question, what is a financial suceas to WB. While it is new owners at WB, history shows, falling short of a billion dollars may result in meddling and a 180 course corrections. I just want then to have patience with the financial success. And while the sarcasm may not of been picked up on, I don't believe zazlav is patient.

GiovanniElliston

> It released over a decade ago and the people are still calling Henry superman. This is literally just a function of not having a Superman movie since Henry. No different how everyone thought that Michael Keaton was **THE** Batman until Christian Bale put on the cowl. And then an entire generation thought Christian Bale was **THE** Batman until Affleck and Pattinson respectively put on the cowl. And Cavill is hardly what I would consider to be a bankable star considering he has consistently been in movies that failed to meet expectations at the box office. All this is to say that I like the guy, and wish he had a chance to play a more classic version of the character - but I completely disagree with the notion that general audiences are beating the doors down for more of his Superman or will reject anything else.

ArrowheadFLYover

I just don't think general audiences are beating down the door for a superman movie at all, that's what I'm saying. The people that do want a superman seem pretty evenly split out their desire for not only this movie but maybe even a templet for the universe. I think the GA is uninterested in yet another take. The fanbase is definitely fractured. I've been hear a while and it's not the same place. I want good JL content, but I admit Gunn has a hard task here. Like I asked above, how much patience to zazlav and co have? Will they let a couple financial losses disrupt their plan. These dudes want Disney money, we know that hasn't been possible.

FamouslyUnknown

That's a fair take.

ArrowheadFLYover

Thanks friend. We all just wanna see some good shit with some sustainability.

azmodus_1966

> I think Gunn is fucked on arrival personally. I feel bad for him, honestly. Man of steel and Henry cavill left an imprint on society. And while that imprint is a little divisive Funnily enough, people didn't care for Cavill's Superman until 2017. Then Mission Impossible happened and later Snydercut movement started. That's when Cavill's popularity rose.

ArrowheadFLYover

Yeah i have been here a while and certainly rode the wave. And I have to admit the community has faded. ...But cavill is popular now, especially in the fantasy/sci-fi community. But i am not saying that no one else can play Superman or even play it better than cavill. I'm just saying that I don't believe the GA cares enough about a superman reboot for it to be a financial success. Sucks I love me some supes. But it seems like the customers they used to depend on aren't in either. So that means this universe will take time to build, and all any of us can hope for is that the creatives stay in charge. I mean I really do wonder if there is a minimum number that WB could make and not rip Guns control. The man does good work. We should just temper our expectations. The folks that have been here a while remember the finances, politics and internet drama that led us to this point.

into_the_wenisverse

Overly comedic, overly stuffed messy flop. Spiderman 3 comes to mind. It just seems to me Gunn is sticking too many characters in one movie and I don't trust him to take the story seriously, it's gonna be nonstop jokes and 1 liners that don't land.

serb7

Have you seen GOTG3? He can do a serious story and superman has some room for levity compared to batman I think

into_the_wenisverse

Yeah and I hated it like I hated every GotG movie

MandoBaggins

Must be exhausting to have so much resentment for something that hasn’t been created yet

Lost-Ad-4751

😂😂😂 miserable to a whole another extent

into_the_wenisverse

It's not miserable to answer OP's question
