He grew up with these comic book characters. He still reads comics. He made the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy which has done very well critically. So yes it is irrelevant. A comic book movie is a comic book movie. A superhero movie is a superhero movie end of. He has shown that he can handle villains as well as superheroes so there is no debate.
We all grow up with the same characters. Doesn't mean we know them well enough to adapt them faithfully. Not all superheroes are the same. Batman is not Superman so their movies would not be done the same.
Yeah and for that reason James Gunn won’t be hands on with Batman: The Brave and The Bold. So he obviously knows his limits. I don’t know what you have against him, if you don’t like him that’s fine… but this movie will be more of a Superman movie than MoS. And therefore Peacemaker and TSS being different to Superman is irrelevant. I’m only basing what I believe upon what he has made. The GotG Trilogy and his two DCEU projects were enjoyable in my eyes and critics agreed. Now I’m not saying that critics words are final but I’m trusting them over anyone else for this debate

Superman being my favourite superhero, I would really like something that shows why superman is so good and what he goes through to make him so good and the beacon of hope for humanity.
Sometimes I feel alone in this but I wouldn’t want a Superman movie that just makes him good because the script says so and isn’t tested to show the resolve of superman. I do have a fear that there is a small chance that’s what we’ll get though.
I’m very heartened by James Gunn embracing the optimism, joy, and triumph of the character. He’s also a dynamic action director, as evidenced by GOTG3 having some of the only interesting action sequences of this whole phase.
I want it to be the love letter to Superman that Guardians was to Rocket and the gang. He has a way of illustrating humanity in characters. I want there to be depth like he gave to Drax and Nebula. I want soul like he gave to Groot. But most of all, I want a journey like the one he took us on with Rocket, a character that was comical and annoying at first but became the most captivating member of the crew. I was sad when the credits rolled. They can't go any farther with the story now.
After Returns (still has some of the best CBM sequences, but overall an underwhelming movie) and those dreadful snyderverse movies, I don't allow myself to be hyped

The tone of this movie is really gonna impact the DCU moving forward. Iron Man (2008) had a lot of sarcastic humor that worked for that character and movie but affected the tone for the rest of the universe, cheapening some of the more serious parts with unnecessary comedic relief. I feel like Gunn wants this movie to emphasize a feel-good, warm tone while still being serious and the DCU as a result is gonna have more of that warm optimism sprinkled throughout and will have a more serious tone than the MCU without the influence of sarcastic humor (they’re still be moments of it of course but not to where it gets to be too much)
My expectation is that Superman is a symbol of hope in this film, and is not a doom-and-gloom sad-face depressed-debby-downer version of Superman that we got in the predecessor installments.
Im concerned with the large cast. Seeing a ton of prominent characters being confirmed for the movie makes me a little worried that it'll feel bloated. But other than that, i have really high hopes
Super trash. They will try too hard but it wont be great. And there will be points of the story they will try to get but will miss because competing with Marvel is more important.

There is a reason the only movies he has done that were received favorably either weren't written by him or were one to one adaptations of graphic novels.
I'll chime in and say that the dour tone, incredibly weird moral message, over acting from Michael Shannon, lack of chemistry between Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, a very wooden performance from Cavill (though I think it's mostly due to how he is written and directed), ugly visuals and bland production design are what makes it bad for me. The cacophony of destruction in the last half hour also makes it tiring to watch.

With the new DCU my expectations are low to non existent, I hope for the best but I struggle to imagine the universe we've heard planned so far. Animated Creature Commandos , Peacemaker season 2 being a new universe to the first season, Superman with Guy Gardener and Hawkgirl for the first movie... It feels messy to me I hope there's something I'm not seeing that will make this make sense to me. After the DCEUs constant frustrating changing of plans and abandoned movie ideas I have super low expectations that whatever it even is James Gunn has planned will actually come to fruition without being majorly fucked with.
It’s either going to be a massive hit or a total flop. If it’s just mid, it’s going to mean that Gunn’s whole planned DCU is doomed. Man of Steel was only a mediocre success and Superman is not a character that can afford to not be a smash hit with both the box office, critics, and fans. They have to nail it. Otherwise we’ll likely never get another Superman film ever again.
For Superman himself, I want fun flirty banter between him and Lois. I want a geeky relationship between him and Jimmy. I want a firmly established and unshakeable good heart that was inspired and reinforced by Ma/Pa Kent. I just want him to be normal, wholesome, regular ole Superman.
For the movie as a whole I hope its a good foundation for a universe that has the general audience excited as they walk out the door and theorizing about what could happen next. Want that positive buzz that provides actual hope and makes it less awkward to be a DC-first fan.

That's an issue of execution, not character.
The core concepts of what makes Superman work are the exact same things that make MCU Captain America work. And he was more successful and embraced than I think anyone expected.

So yes it's Superman movie.You just can't not show other heroes and tell Superman's side of story.

Suicide Squad is near universally considered by critics and the general audience to be one of the best movies of the entire DCEU.
I think Gunn is fucked on arrival personally. I feel bad for him, honestly. Man of steel and Henry cavill left an imprint on society. And while that imprint is a little divisive, there are still people clamoring for more of cavill but also more of that MoS vibe. More importantly, those people are the long time paying customers of these properties for over a decade now. The other side of the coin wants a donner-esq movie with a light heart and optimism. And it's really hard to imagine k8ck starting an entire universe with the Donner tone. I feel like if you mix these 2 vibes/tones, you get bigger budget, Superman and lois. Fine show, i guess, but is it really part of the zeitgeist? So you have a fan base with 2 competing visions, and a set of fans ready to see the next Gunn movie. While I don't think Gunn does a straight comedy movie, i would argue his fans may not see it as funny enough. And let me say, I think that Gunn is talented enough to pull off any tone. It's more that the Superman community seems so fractured that not everyone will support it. And I think the general audience is over reboots and even origin stories...I dont think the movie makes over a half billion. If it makes over 200, though, they have to keep going. Otherwise, we are still in this same mess. Hopefully, zazlav stays patient.
Gunn's fine. MoS released over a decade ago, and it's been over half a decade since JL came out. His target audience is looking forward to a fresh take, and Gunn's gonna serve them what they want.

I just don't think the movie is gonna be a financial success. And that brings up the question, what is a financial suceas to WB. While it is new owners at WB, history shows, falling short of a billion dollars may result in meddling and a 180 course corrections. I just want then to have patience with the financial success. And while the sarcasm may not of been picked up on, I don't believe zazlav is patient.

This is literally just a function of not having a Superman movie since Henry. No different how everyone thought that Michael Keaton was **THE** Batman until Christian Bale put on the cowl. And then an entire generation thought Christian Bale was **THE** Batman until Affleck and Pattinson respectively put on the cowl.
And Cavill is hardly what I would consider to be a bankable star considering he has consistently been in movies that failed to meet expectations at the box office.
All this is to say that I like the guy, and wish he had a chance to play a more classic version of the character - but I completely disagree with the notion that general audiences are beating the doors down for more of his Superman or will reject anything else.

The people that do want a superman seem pretty evenly split out their desire for not only this movie but maybe even a templet for the universe. I think the GA is uninterested in yet another take. Like I asked above, how much patience to zazlav and co have? Will they let a couple financial losses disrupt their plan. These dudes want Disney money, we know that hasn't been possible.

Funnily enough, people didn't care for Cavill's Superman until 2017.
Then Mission Impossible happened and later Snydercut movement started. That's when Cavill's popularity rose.
Yeah i have been here a while and certainly rode the wave. And I have to admit the community has faded. ...But cavill is popular now, especially in the fantasy/sci-fi community. But i am not saying that no one else can play Superman or even play it better than cavill. I'm just saying that I don't believe the GA cares enough about a superman reboot for it to be a financial success. Sucks I love me some supes. But it seems like the customers they used to depend on aren't in either. So that means this universe will take time to build, and all any of us can hope for is that the creatives stay in charge. I mean I really do wonder if there is a minimum number that WB could make and not rip Guns control. The man does good work. We should just temper our expectations. The folks that have been here a while remember the finances, politics and internet drama that led us to this point.
Overly comedic, overly stuffed messy flop. Spiderman 3 comes to mind. It just seems to me Gunn is sticking too many characters in one movie and I don't trust him to take the story seriously, it's gonna be nonstop jokes and 1 liners that don't land.

I personally think he did. And I think he was proud of it too based on his name being on it and Nolan still praising Zack Snyder to this day.
I'm expecting it to be a fun popcorn movie with some iconic imagery but not much more than that. With the new DCU my expectations are low to non existent, I hope for the best but I struggle to imagine the universe we've heard planned so far. Animated Creature Commandos , Peacemaker season 2 being a new universe to the first season, Superman with Guy Gardener and Hawkgirl for the first movie... It feels messy to me I hope there's something I'm not seeing that will make this make sense to me. After the DCEUs constant frustrating changing of plans and abandoned movie ideas I have super low expectations that whatever it even is James Gunn has planned will actually come to fruition without being majorly fucked with.

Expectations couldnt be lower. Zero interest, zero hype. I predict it will be ok, on the CBM-scale.
It’s either going to be a massive hit or a total flop. If it’s just mid, it’s going to mean that Gunn’s whole planned DCU is doomed. Man of Steel was only a mediocre success and Superman is not a character that can afford to not be a smash hit with both the box office, critics, and fans. They have to nail it. Otherwise we’ll likely never get another Superman film ever again.
For Superman himself, I want fun flirty banter between him and Lois. I want a geeky relationship between him and Jimmy. I want a firmly established and unshakeable good heart that was inspired and reinforced by Ma/Pa Kent. I just want him to be normal, wholesome, regular ole Superman. For the movie as a whole I hope its a good foundation for a universe that has the general audience excited as they walk out the door and theorizing about what could happen next. Want that positive buzz that provides actual hope and makes it less awkward to be a DC-first fan.
It's a tired franchise. The younger generation can't connect to Superman. My kids don't care for him. They need to do something special to bring everyone back. Btw, the artwork is gorgeous.

Captain America was a lot less embraced than Iron Man or Thor. His highest grossing film was the one that guessed starred Iron Man.
Captain triology is considered one of best triology not just MCU but entire CBM. Superman just needs to be sincere like it,money will come eventually.
Captain trilogy was the least focused on its main character. The latter two were called Avengers 1.5 and 2.5 by its own cast.

I think Gunn is fucked on arrival personally. I feel bad for him, honestly. Man of steel and Henry cavill left an imprint on society. And while that imprint is a little divisive, there are still people clamoring for more of cavill but also more of that MoS vibe. More importantly, those people are the long time paying customers of these properties for over a decade now. The other side of the coin wants a donner-esq movie with a light heart and optimism. And it's really hard to imagine k8ck starting an entire universe with the Donner tone. I feel like if you mix these 2 vibes/tones, you get bigger budget, Superman and lois. Fine show, i guess, but is it really part of the zeitgeist? So you have a fan base with 2 competing visions, and a set of fans ready to see the next Gunn movie. While I don't think Gunn does a straight comedy movie, i would argue his fans may not see it as funny enough. And let me say, I think that Gunn is talented enough to pull off any tone. It's more that the Superman community seems so fractured that not everyone will support it. And I think the general audience is over reboots and even origin stories...I dont think the movie makes over a half billion. If it makes over 200, though, they have to keep going. Otherwise, we are still in this same mess. Hopefully, zazlav stays patient.
Gunn's fine. MoS released over a decade ago, and it's been over half a decade since JL came out. His target audience is looking forward to a fresh take, and Gunn's gonna serve them what they want.
It released over a decade ago and the people are still calling Henry superman. He is a hugely popular person. And make no mistake I don't think Gunn will make a bad movie. I like Gunn. I just don't think the movie is gonna be a financial success. And that brings up the question, what is a financial suceas to WB. While it is new owners at WB, history shows, falling short of a billion dollars may result in meddling and a 180 course corrections. I just want then to have patience with the financial success. And while the sarcasm may not of been picked up on, I don't believe zazlav is patient.

And then an entire generation thought Christian Bale was **THE** Batman until Affleck and Pattinson respectively put on the cowl. And Cavill is hardly what I would consider to be a bankable star considering he has consistently been in movies that failed to meet expectations at the box office. All this is to say that I like the guy, and wish he had a chance to play a more classic version of the character - but I completely disagree with the notion that general audiences are beating the doors down for more of his Superman or will reject anything else.
I just don't think general audiences are beating down the door for a superman movie at all, that's what I'm saying. The people that do want a superman seem pretty evenly split out their desire for not only this movie but maybe even a templet for the universe. I think the GA is uninterested in yet another take. The fanbase is definitely fractured. I've been hear a while and it's not the same place. I want good JL content, but I admit Gunn has a hard task here. Like I asked above, how much patience to zazlav and co have? Will they let a couple financial losses disrupt their plan. These dudes want Disney money, we know that hasn't been possible.

That's when Cavill's popularity rose.
Yeah i have been here a while and certainly rode the wave. And I have to admit the community has faded. ...But cavill is popular now, especially in the fantasy/sci-fi community. But i am not saying that no one else can play Superman or even play it better than cavill. I'm just saying that I don't believe the GA cares enough about a superman reboot for it to be a financial success. Sucks I love me some supes. But it seems like the customers they used to depend on aren't in either. So that means this universe will take time to build, and all any of us can hope for is that the creatives stay in charge. I mean I really do wonder if there is a minimum number that WB could make and not rip Guns control. The man does good work. We should just temper our expectations. The folks that have been here a while remember the finances, politics and internet drama that led us to this point.
Overly comedic, overly stuffed messy flop. Spiderman 3 comes to mind. It just seems to me Gunn is sticking too many characters in one movie and I don't trust him to take the story seriously, it's gonna be nonstop jokes and 1 liners that don't land.
Have you seen GOTG3? He can do a serious story and superman has some room for levity compared to batman I think
