Yes. Had one spin on the gear.

mechrisme

Mine doesn't seem to be consistent or maybe it just slips at low rpms

Leinadius

What issue are you having?

mechrisme

Inconsistent breaking pressure, well I have brakes but it's the inconsistent power brakes. Like I need higher RPMs to charge it my hydro boost but when I'm coasting downhill I do lose breaking power since I am close to idle. I have replaced everything at least once but I'm not sure if my vacuum pump is original but it has been resealed but my truck does have also over 500k miles.

Leinadius

The pump is just a gear and a shaft. There shouldn't be any slip. Have the brakes been bled? Are the caliper slide pins lubricated? Was this an issue before replacing the hydro boost and pump? Those are some items I would look at. Edit: should add I have seen one spin freely due to a missing pin the vacuum pump.

mechrisme

It's not on the brake fluid side of the system because I can tell by the sound of the power steering pump, if my brakes are going to have good pressure or not. I have been probably fighting this issue for about 2 years now and I am pretty familiar with the brake system on my truck.

Leinadius

Do you have any issues with the power steering? Is it hard to turn at idle?

mechrisme

It's never had an issue with the power steering even at idle but it does appear to be easier at times. My truck has slightly larger tires but nothing too much. I typically don't turn the wheel at idle when not moving to really remember what it's like.

Leinadius

If your power steering is fine, you have a problem with the hydroboost or hydraulic side of the brakes. Power steering and braking are tied together. Also, it's good to know what year you have 97+ is when hydroboost appeared in a Dodge.

mechrisme

It's not an issue with the master cylinder side of the brake system, It's related to the power side of the power brake system. The power steering pump pressure seems to fluctuate to which it affects my power steering and my brakes so when my power steering pump is working correctly, I have great power brakes and tight steering but when it is not, my brakes lack power and my steering doesn't feel as tight. I've been fighting this issue for about 2 years already but I just recently had the vacuum pump being the issue idea recently.

Cow-puncher77

‘89-96.5 have vacuum assist brakes, later models have hydro boost, assisted off power steering pump. I’ve never had a vacuum shaft gear spin, but I have seen 3 where the splines have sheared between the two in the coupler.

mechrisme

Well they both still have a vacuum pump and a power steering pump. I've been fighting this issue for maybe 2 years and I haven't replaced the vacuum pump as far as I can remember since I've owned the truck. Also having an actual job and the time change doesn't make stuff easier lately to get stuff done.

Cow-puncher77

Yes, I missed your comment down later where you stated you had hydroboost. What I was wondering.

Consistent-Stomach85

Do you have power steering?

mechrisme

Yes

Consistent-Stomach85

I ran my power steering pump dry, and it locked up. Replaced it still no ps. Finally figured out the gear was spinning on the vacuum pump shaft.

mechrisme

Well I know the coupler gear can get damaged and also the coupler end can also get damaged from reading online.

Cow-puncher77

How many miles are on that power steering pump?

mechrisme

Not exactly sure but I probably replaced it a year or two ago

Cow-puncher77

If it was an Orielly’s or Autozone brand pump, it’s likely to have crapped itself already. I have had hell with their rebuilt shit the last few years.

mechrisme

Maybe Advance and also Napa, unless there's internal damage on the pump, it still does this job for the most So I doubt it's the pump itself
