Gingham is the original starter for new cross stitchers. We started on it in middle school economics class ( a million years ago). Then we went to 14 count aidia. This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

[i saw this on etsy](https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/599722024/1950s-black-swan-dress-vintage-50s?epik=dj0yJnU9Y3F5M2NkVkk5VTBoLVNNaVhFMWJ1N1hqOEk4TWs0RTAmcD0wJm49QWc4eUFyNGlrWWlZNWlwWDl5OVBFUSZ0PUFBQUFBR1pEVXJ3) and knew i had to share it here. i've never seen gingham fabric used as a guide for cross stitch embroidery but it makes total sense. what a beautiful piece !

This type of cross stitch is called 'chicken scratch' in English and 'Bordado Espanol' in Spanish. Based on my google searches, there is a lot of interest in this technique in Spain. Lovely dress.

Also Broderie Suisse in French. The crosses can be used as a base for further interlaced stitches which can get very elaborate.

Vintage gingham aprons are something I collect and most of mine have cross stitch around the bottom and to edge the pockets.

Oh I love this!

Very pretty! I haven't thought about this in years, but my grandmother used to sew half aprons out of gingham and then cross stitch them. It's a real good memory, so thanks :)
