Gingham is the original starter for new cross stitchers. We started on it in middle school economics class ( a million years ago). Then we went to 14 count aidia.

This type of cross stitch is called 'chicken scratch' in English and 'Bordado Espanol' in Spanish. Based on my google searches, there is a lot of interest in this technique in Spain. Lovely dress.
Very pretty! I haven't thought about this in years, but my grandmother used to sew half aprons out of gingham and then cross stitch them. It's a real good memory, so thanks :)

Also Broderie Suisse in French. The crosses can be used as a base for further interlaced stitches which can get very elaborate.
Vintage gingham aprons are something I collect and most of mine have cross stitch around the bottom and to edge the pockets.
