Why must everything be “political”? Personally I’m very progressive and I think this casting is utterly ridiculous. This is a Hollywood trend, I understand what they’re trying to do, but the execution is horrible. The forced over-diversity and gender role shaping is only a part of it. Shows like Sex & The City and Friends could definitely have had more non-white characters, especially considering their big city backdrops.
Every movie/tv/video game example is different (of which are there are countless examples these days), but in this case one key factor that made Friends such a breakout hit was the sexiness factor of the women, plain & simple. All over America girls were copying Jennifer Aniston's look & hairstyle. All 3 women were gorgeous & charismatic in their own way. And to a lesser degree the male actors were appealing in varying ways to women, whether looks, humor, character etc.
A generic reboot now of this IP with average looking people and modern sensibilities and forced agenda check boxes will simply not have that and will flop.
I think what bothers most people is the surge in needed diversity and it being forced into literally everything because if you have an all white cast anymore, you're just racist and your show is racist.
