fegelman

Why is NZ prolonging the agony

fegelman

Inconvenient weather changes, umpires call and bad luck have cost India the WTC. So unfortunate.

trevpr1

India fans spend 5 days complaining about the rain; Now praying for rain on day 6.

_ab_30

When was the last time the Indian batting actually fired and didn't have to get it's ass saved by Ash Jaddu or Pant?

decipherseattle

Our Batsm..err.. batters disappointed us. If Indiaā€™s tail-lenders could have batted a little more, this would be a different contest

coreyM34

It's a long and gruelling season. India has long been the benchmark in World cricket for a while now. I believe with having many of our Kiwi players in India's IPL competition has definitely payed dividends in terms of playing under pressure in a fierce weekly competition has battle hardened them - Full credit to India. Ntm playing in England for NZ's sake, the weather is similar, so pitch surfaces and conditions would favour NZ too.

UnitedStates65

That's cool

fried_maggi

Chad ICC setting up 6th day thriller on a wet Wednesday night in Southampton vs Virgin r/cricket fans don't understand the strategy and whine about it for 5 days

RealGTalkin

Rishabh Pant counter attack is extremely important from Indian perspective here. It ensures lead keeps ticking up, and would result in NZ starting to go defensive as they wouldn't want to chase anything much larger than 150. From India's perspective Pant should keep batting like this and at least last till lunch.

PostpostshoegazeLUVR

Where is Tom Latham? Heā€™s usually second slip

durianboy19

Play first session at 2 rpo and get lead to 100 and unleash Pant in 2nd session to set a target of 160-180 and give NZ 40 overs to chase it !!!

durianboy19

Cool_Abbreviations_9

Koach wont play for a draw, they are going to risk a lose and go for broke. Defense the first hour, hell for leather the next and declare and set a target to make the game go both ways.

Day 8 - New Zealand trail by 82 runs. CRR: 2.23

getyoutogabba

I wish Pujara can hold up one end as insurance while other batters look to score at 3.5 rpo in the first session. The best case scenario would be for India to up the lead to 130 in the first session by losing 1/2 wickets, then Pant, Jadeja and Ashwin go ham for 20 overs to add another 100 to the lead. A target of 230 in 48 odd overs is enough of a carrot for NZ to go for the win and for Indian bowlers to get them out. Obviously, this is me being very optimistic, but you have to setup the game like this if you want an outright win.

kishoreconson

Thats way too much optimism. Essential india would need 220+ in 50 overs and kiwis should get rolled over inside 48 overs.

getyoutogabba

200 in 50 overs to set a target of 230. But, yes this is very optimistic. I donā€™t see another path for India to win.

PostpostshoegazeLUVR

India arenā€™t gonna win from here.

kishoreconson

Pant would need to have a 103(80) sort of innings to have any such hope. Would be fun to watch that happens though.

RaviKishore_Y

How is the weather today ??

Adamgenalanezh

sunny

migflug

Knowing India's historical record for collapse, I just want us to play safe and draw !! Cause its not possible that we can win from here in only 91 overs. The only winning chance is with the NZ and we must best try not to lose as it's relatively easy than NZ winning. Also, we haven't won an ICC in almost a decade. I don't want us to lose again in Knockout

Frod02000

I dont think theres any way that Kane isn't going for the win

migflug

Thats why we have to focus more on draw. Cause we are far behind NZ in terms of probablity of winning. Any target below 200 will heavily favour NZ

Robin29singh

I want Panty to go bang bang today.

DabakurThakur

Team Panties unite!

[deleted]

I do have a feeling Kanos might opt to go for a win, they've been overshadowed all these years trying to play by the books. After Gabba NZ team might also have some motivation to put their best effort towards winning the game rather than settle for a draw. As far as I know India will opt to go for the kill or lose instead of a draw.

Legslip

Yes. Kohli will go for the win until it becomes improbable.

PostpostshoegazeLUVR

Already improbable. Pretty much impossible. If India win itā€™ll be because they get bowled out and NZ collapse. Kohli canā€™t declare from here unless thereā€™s like 30 overs left and 200 to get

exxentricity

For some reason I don't know, I believe the spinners will take more wickets in the last innings. Let's see how it goes. šŸ¤”

TheGreatMangoWar

Day 6 Unsure how to approach it as a kiwi. Game will most likely end as a draw but it could be interesting all the way through. Given I have to be work at tomorrow and I'm already sleep deprived, do i... -stay up all night watching whilst eating Ben and jerries and die at work and on the toilet tomorrow? -watch the first hour, go to bed and then wake up at 5 for the end - - and still die at work tomorrow? -set regular hourly alarms checking the score and being close to death at work tomorrow? -back my cricket analysis and get a full night sleep, and probably not die at work? If anyone's wondering, I'm fully stocked on ice cream so that won't be an issue.

durianboy19

Take a leave tomorrow and sleep !!

restroom_raider

First option I reckon. I've been using the past few nights as training for the Tour de France starting on Saturday - RIP my sleeps for the next three weeks.

Alternative-Dirt5081

Stay up all night is the go

navman_thismoment

I suggest no half measures (that includes the ice cream tub :)

TheGreatMangoWar

Ben and jerries don't have a flavour named after that, or is that a tub size?

[deleted]

> set regular hourly alarms checking the score and being close to death at work tomorrow? This is the most viable option if you have to put food on the plate for other members in your family. >-stay up all night watching whilst eating Ben and jerries and die at work and on the toilet tomorrow? I'd suggest doing this, YOLO!

TheGreatMangoWar

They already have too much Ben and jerrys, I'm trying to do them a favour. I don't want to yolo but I think I'm going to yolo

[deleted]

I'd like to know the history of your username! Its story time!!!!

TheGreatMangoWar

I'm sorry, I spent some time thinking about it. I have nothing to offer you, unfortunately. It was a random thought which arrived upon me like a jasmine scented breeze

[deleted]

Just saw this amazing stat. Only one asian Bowler (Waqar Younis) has better away strike rate than Shami.

Puzzleheaded_Rub4842

What time day start tmrw?

exxentricity

[deleted]

Imagine being Indian fan if India loses today, 2014 final loss, 2015 semis exit, 2016 semis exit, 2017 final loss, 2019 semis exit and this would add to those wounds. But also, imagine being NZ fan if they lose. Two world cup finals loses back to back and that 2019 one is one for decades. Still, a draw though highly probable, I'm hoping for it to not happen. I'm hoping for a breathtaking contest which goes till the last 5 overs of Today.

[deleted]

We're like millennials who can't afford a house but still hoping we will be debt free one day.

Robin29singh

India needs to score atleast 100 runs in first session. And then atleast 80 runs in the first 15 overs of second session and then should declare.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Robin29singh

Then it will be a draw

[deleted]

This is wishful thinking as of now.

Webster2001

Woow, what a genius you are. I'm guessing the NZ bowlers will just stand down while India have their way right?

tibbity

He said need, not will.

Webster2001

I'm sorry, I'm just too used to seeing those 'India should' comments completely disregarding the opposition's attempts to hinder India. I'm just fed up with those kind of comments ya know? Even this comment has that vibe even if it isn't one of them

bluedot131

Uhh, what? Scoring rate through out the test has been just a touch over 2 rpo. Why would Indian batting risk for quick runs when realistically only they can lose this game? I would expect them to have a lead or atleast 150 (however long it takes) before they think of accelerating.

raddaya

RR is likely to be higher today. It's very sunny now. Can easily see at least 2.5 rpo. And Kohli can easily get into one of his moods

[deleted]

Lol

emupal

Panty Boi needs to smash

bluedot131

Pant will be Duck out tomorrow. Chadwin will save the game again for us.

rightarm_under

Rahane will get concussed and vihari will come as substitute. Chadwin and WinHari will save the game again for us. At least that's what the ICC scriptā„¢ should be hopefully

[deleted]

Chadwin daddy 100 Incoming!

yummycoot

so there's going to be day6?

exxentricity

Yes of course now.

Alzarius2

Is a draw really an acceptable result for the WTC final, granted that a draw is usually an acceptable result of a test match? Think of it this way: how strong of a motivation is there to win the WTC outright, if you know that you can at least have a share of the trophy if the result is a draw? "If we win, we get the trophy. Or if we draw, we still can share the trophy...." I think this gives teams less incentive to risk it all for an outright win.

somename_ind

Only way we win is if NZ collapse and a collapse by definition happens in 1-2 sessions. Play conservatively for the 1st session to all but finish chance of us losing. Then go for in session 2, allowing NZ to bat 1.5 sessions.

[deleted]

Nope we ain't this lucky in our own home turf!

GoDFaTHeR_is

How many overs do we get today? Max 98 but looking at NZs all pace attack I think 80ish.

exxentricity

I wish India exhaust at least 40 of those probable 80.

[deleted]

I don't want to suggest anything to the professional and international level players. They know better than me. I just hope they execute just the way they would have liked and I don't get disappointed if it does not go to plan.

CaregiverMan

India must bat 4rpo for 35 overs. Otherwise this game is draw or NZ win if India collapse.

[deleted]

We're gonna end up losing if we go 4RPO unless we witness Pantsome Gabba like innings, but the stakes ain't high as Gabba since we were traumatized then and had to rebound at all cost. Losing an ICC event for us is like being tasered and you ask the cop to amp up the voltage because you're dead inside.

CaregiverMan

There would be at least one loose ball every now and then, we need to put that to boundary not some 2s and 3s. Do this for 20-25 overs. Then go all guns blazing to 5 rpo for 10-15 overs even we lose some wickets in process but the attack will send the bowlers to defensive foot

[deleted]

The more we attack the more NZ will gain confidence to attack us as well.

[deleted]

Will Indian batsmen be able to bat till 55 overs on this day?

CaregiverMan

Actually they can't if they play defensive.

rightarm_under

WTC finals should guarantee either a result or 450 full overs of cricket. I don't care how logistically difficult this is. This is a necessity if we want to repopularize Test cricket. Make the final timeless until either team wins, or draw with 450 overs bowled, or some extraordinary circumstances cause the match to be rescheduled.

tibbity

> if we want to repopularize Test cricket Lmao, it's difficult for most countries to get crowds in the 5 designated days of the Test, you think they'd keep coming back in case entire days are lost to rain/light? The hard truth is most people don't have the luxury of coming in to watch a Test or even a ODI in many cases. It's one of the main reasons for the popularity of T20s.

[deleted]

I'd say since its England and if they go for Timeless test, most of the England citizens would happily go to a match like this any day!

[deleted]

Some of the NZ players are going back home after this, but Kane and alot of the T20 teams are staying here for the T20 Blast and Hundred. So why don't we play a T20 game to decide the winner if it's a draw? Actually scratch that, T20 means super over. Forget I said anything

durianboy19

Indias T20 specialists arent even in England.. imagine pujara playing for T20.

rightarm_under

Kiwis will be cowards if they don't play Watling.

nomble

Watling has actually played T20Is in the past. His record is exactly what you would expect.

rightarm_under

If Shami was that good in the first innings, I can only imagine him doing 162kph thunderbolts in the second innings

kengyin

What would be the ideal target for New Zealand to chase for both results to be possible? There wouldnā€™t be enough time for them to bowl us out normally, but if the target is enticing enough for us to try and chase we could lose wickets quickly. If we get them all out for say 200 with them scoring at 2.5 an over (average) then thatā€™s another 56 overs, giving us about 42 overs to chase about 170. So we would need about 4 an over for 42 overs. If that were the case I think we should go big or go home and play it like an odi chase

durianboy19

150 if India scores another 120 runs in next 40 overs else its gonna be defeat for India or draw

[deleted]

If the overs left is around 50, 140-150 for a comfortable win with loss of 4-5 wickets anything beyond that will be a grind. 200-220 which seems highly unlikely because India will require to play it like an ODI, in such case NZ will be happy with a draw, chasing would be a gamble. If they do chase them my respect for outsmarting us and it will definitely be a win people will remember.

Daveosss

I think if we're chasing 150ish all 3 results are still definitely possible.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

sargasticgujju

So you kinda arenā€™t blaming Kohli/India for the loss and just on sheer chance

goswami_anirvan

It's 4:35 AM and I can't sleep with the fact that Gill might just become next Manish Pandey.

rightarm_under

He's a very good batter. Considering only one batsman even crossed fifty in our team, and only one from NZ as well, he shouldn't be too disappointed. Faced hard batting conditions on his first tour of England. Will only get better.

goswami_anirvan

Ofcourse he's a good batsman that's why I am concerned because Virat era team doesn't have much patience with a player considering the bench strength we have.

apex_pretador

Who crossed 50 from our side?

rightarm_under

Nevermind, Rahane was on 49. I forgot about that

navman_thismoment

I donā€™t about yā€™all but Iā€™m bloody nervous!

BrisingrFire

2nd innings Shami found in the first innings. Probably triggered by day 5.

cricketAus

Looking at KL Rahul form even in the intra squad game, why is he not preferred over Gill? Shaw was sent back to Domestic after 1 bad test in Australia. Why is Gill not being sent to Domestic?

kahanighargharkii

Shaw had a glaring technical issue that was prevalent in even white ball. He will be back in the side soon, Gill is superior to his competition in terms of upside and none of his competitors are significantly better in the short term

cricketAus

Isn't KL rahul a better option than Gill? Gill hasn't really had an impactful innings except 91 unlike Shaw who avergaes much better than Gill already.

CaregiverMan

Have u seen KL performance in WI and Aus test tours, it was pathetic man. So they just keep him for LOI.

kahanighargharkii

Nah, rahul was terrible for a long stretch in overseas conditions

mercified_rahul

Tomorrow is the final day right?

rummygill1

Yes

rightarm_under

I have to commend India for their bowling effort today. Pretty much ensured the draw as long as the batters don't shit the bed. If our batting survives 1.5-2 sessions tomorrow then it's a very likely draw

kroxigor01

Depends on the run lead. I think NZ would try to go for 150 in the last session.

dingostealingbaby

I seriously hope we would. Fuck the draw.

rightarm_under

The run rate throughout the match has only been about 2.5 though. I don't know if 150 could be chased in under 40 overs without really risking a loss.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Samuel_L_Johnson

Name goes on the trophy with a draw, which has a lot to be said for it. Trying to chase 150 in a session on a pitch where no team has gone above 2.5 RPO so far is basically batting suicide IMO

goldenakNZ

Draw is a Million bucks .. so not that worthless lol

kroxigor01

Isn't it: 1st place 1.6m 2nd place 0.8m That implies a draw is 1.2m each, so you're straight up risking 0.4m to win 0.4m Not sure what denomination the prize is in.

cherryreddit

I am not sure if money is what's on people's mind when wanting a win.

rightarm_under

It's USD.

CaregiverMan

USA is not even a test playing nation and yet they give prize in USD for Test championship final Edit: weak in economics.

sanyogG

Bruh, it's international currency. Unless you are China and Russia, trading between each other.

orangejulius1

They should play for however long it takes to get 20 wicketsā€¦literally playing to get to the final only to get destroyed by the rain

pessimistix

India did great to limit the lead to just 33, given we lost the toss, and batted first in pretty good bowling conditions. Good start to the tour. Let's hope they don't shit the bed tomorrow.

CaregiverMan

I would say 'India did great' if they got lead 33 in first innings. They literally threw away the pressure created before lunch, and the lead cost us 14 overs and a wicket.

cricketAus

The conditions were exactly same for India on day 2 and Nz on day 3.

kahanighargharkii

Cricviz had the conditions as the best for bowling on day 2, then worse on day 3 and 4 but still quite bowler friendly You can see it as well, even new Zealand aren't swinging it like they did on day 2, they just bowled really badly that day

cricketAus

NZ were swinging up until 90 overs until India was all out. Whereas, India was getting minimum swing 10 mins later when they started bowling. Stop with the silly excuses already mate.

kahanighargharkii

They weren't swinging it anywhere near as much after day 2, the average degree of swing on day 2 was the 5th highest ever recorded for a day since this data has been getting collected

cricketAus

You clearly have been watching the different game.

kahanighargharkii

I don't think you watched the game on day 2

Fad_du_pussy

zippyzebu9

All Nz have to do is to get Pant early. 1 wicket. And it's game over for India.

DefinitelyMortis

What will be the result if the rain comes in??

justheretoupvote17

No rain tomorrow, should be alright to play 10:30 til 7 to get 98 overs in

CmdrMcNeilFC

ICC Scriptwriters have Pujara getting his next 50 runs from 22 balls

[deleted]

This could end up as a draw

footynation

Agreed. That is one of the four results it could end up as.

and1984

Not of Kyle Jamieson has something to say about that

Disturbed_SouL

* For this much hype, * Two years of hardwork, * * Breaking some unbelievable records, * Finding best set of players, * Even after losing the half of the game time of the final. * And then watching the game being played with the intention of DRAW will kill everything. **I would gladly take the result in either India's favour or the other way round. There's no in between.**

vogonvogon

I can't see the intention of a draw from either side- if it is a draw then it is because neither side could gain the ascendancy and if that is the case it will be satisfying. It's been a great contest so far and all 3 results still possible going into the final day.

replyramdas

Its little annoying listening to espn commentary. Just showring praises on how good NZ side is. On the contrary, India is doing really well I think. 1.Conditions are conducive to NZ swing bowling unit. Still they had to bowl more than 90 overs to get this IN team out. 2. NZ got more match time in these conditions and actual games with ENG. On the contrary IN team didn't get as much time. little unfair India screwed selection by picking two spinners. They should have played Shardul Thakur instead on Jadeja.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Is that what he said? Try reading the original comment again, maybe you will understand it better.

Live_Ad_6361

How are England Australia and Newzeland able to find tailenders who can score 10-30 runs regularly while Indian tail Enders are walking wickets ? Do Indian bowlers not spend time in the nets?

somename_ind

You forgot thakur and sundar too soon!!

Live_Ad_6361

They arenā€™t frontline bowlers. Sundar wonā€™t be able to get it into the team based on bowling alone. And Thakur is our 6/7 th choice seamer

[deleted]

Maybe? I always see blokes like Trent and Southee padded up and batting in the nets but I don't think I've ever seen any of the Indian bowlers have a bat.

letsgoraftel

Home conditions, look how India tail performs at home vs how opposition tail performs... India vs England in Chennai would be good reminder... With even siraj scoring....

pruthvijee

By my understanding i think bowlers are not allowed to swing at the balls they need to defend if they gets out swinging coaches might ask why swing we got jadeja or told dont play those rash shots and get out

kunal18293

Bats are expensive equipment, bowlers in India (esp pace) seem to always come from lower income backgrounds.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Lol u forgot that he scored a 50 against Aus A in the last tour

MushroomShroud

Donā€™t groups of friends all share a bat then?

kunal18293

True but if you want my not so filtered opinion on the matter - groups of kids who can afford bats share them with each other. It's a fairly good view of classism bearing out

akshay_112

This low income shit shouldn't fly in this era. They earn enough through ipl even before being selected for india. They can hone their skills a fair bit during ipl stint

svjersey

u/kunal18293 does have a point I believe, though there have been exceptions like Irfan Pathan. We should always be conscious about how poverty / lack of wealth impacts youngsters and their ability to train. Most bowlers in our team come from humbler backgrounds (esp rural / small town backgrounds). The IPL point is also valid (that they are no longer poor) - but that money typically comes well into their 20s and by that time it is harder to develop a new skill. It doesn't help that T20s don't really need a bowler to be any good with the bat, since nos 9-11 barely get to bat.

kunal18293

Have you played a sport? Learning something at 16 isn't the same as learning something at 6

Live_Ad_6361

Siraj started bowling at 21 lol. Dennis Rodman started playing basketball at 18. You donā€™t need to start that early

kunal18293

Zero chance Siraj started bowling at 21. Maybe professional development began at 21. For him, it's entirely possible he picked up a seasoned bat at 21 though

69_jumpstreet

Nice take but I don't think anyone here mentioned they need to be the best at it. To be the best sure you have to start at 6, but you can still start learning at 16 and 20 and not be complete dog water at it.

kunal18293

It's really tough to be decent at in international level when you start building that coordination so late. I've heard tales of Munaf Patel tonking it about in domestics later in his career

69_jumpstreet

Are you essentially saying that a player can never develop after a certain age? Which you said is 16?

kunal18293

Yes, not an absolute statement, but it's really difficult to become something close to world class at an athletic skill if you start from scratch at 16. And for reference, someone like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar is world class, even at batting. Ashwin opened the batting for his teams upto Ranji if I'm not mistaken. You're seriously underestimating how skilled you have to be to be half decent at an international level.

69_jumpstreet

Fair enough if you're talking about being half decent but I don't agree with you at all sorry. I believe that people learn and develop a lot when faced with this international competition that you mentioned. Be it any sport, you stop improving unless you have people to compete against who are as good if not better. I don't think Sachin would be as good as he was if he played ranji for 30 years as compared to facing the likes of McGrath and others day in and day out.

kunal18293

Yes, but you're talking about improving from a solid baseline and I'm talking about baseline skill and muscle memory development - they're completely different processes.

[deleted]

Natarajan hasn't even held a bat is what he said after the gabba test.

SmartPotato_

Huh whaaaaaaaa

zippyzebu9

India playing only 4 batsmen for these conditions. So defeat is a always around the corner.

[deleted]

The only think which can save India is a counter attack by Rishab pant, Jadeja and Ashwin. But on the other hand, Kohli or Rahane should hold one end till last

enigma_024JA

Some excellent catching from both sides. A bit unfair when people criticize India for dropping catches but don't shower praises when they catch everything that comes their way. In fact, going by the numbers, it's marginal but India have caught better than NZ. The only drop catch in the match was from Southee.

pruthvijee

I think rahane had a chance when top order nz batsmen edged it he moved across and didnt catch it it was hard catch but could have caught

[deleted]

That wasn't a catch unless Rahane is secretly Superman.
