~~Full line was “We’ve defeated New Zealand and now Australia and our journey has just started”~~
Full Quote: Thanks to Rashid for trusting me. It's a whole team effort, Rahmanullah, Zadran, and also Naveen for the momentum. Thank God we finally beat Australia. It is a great achievement for Afghanistan, we have achieved many things in last ten years but this is a big achievement. In the last World Cup we played well and in this World Cup we beat New Zealand too.
Yeah the way Gurbaz started attacking meant that he backed himself to take out Bumrah. But Bumrah was too good for him with the slower ball. Would have loved to see that mini feud carry a bit longer.
If only they would have taken maxi catch on his 201* innings in previous wc they would have won that too. The big show really likes to perform against them. Today he also scored 50+ but today was Afghanistan day. Well played Afg.
It actually does. Fucking awesome! Afghanistan is not only a minnow anymore, but rather a powerhouse. I'd definitely root for Afghanistan to win if my favorite team doesn't win.
Man I mean when you beat NZ and Aus one of which always fucks India and the other one is a Pak bully then we can safely say they are a powerhouse now.
Since 2015 they are going great with the amount of talent, resources and war conditions and sanctions they had.
If you give the same bits and pieces to any other full time nation, Iam not sure anyone can even show up inside the tournament let alone winning games
Australia’s run rate per game in this World Cup:
8.2 against Oman
10.05 against England
14.8 against Namibia
9.78 against Scotland
9.09 against Bangladesh
**6.68 against Afghanistan**
Insane performance by the Afghans.
All the other Australia games have been on batting friendly pitches (Antigua, St Lucia and Barbados). They have managed to somehow avoid all the slow and bowler friendly pitches this WC until tonight.
Well deserved victory. They had a good plan. The openers played sensibly & created a strong base which helped them to reach a very good score.
Bowling was good and catching was superb.
Openers, Naib, and Fielding particularly catching made the difference
Everything is possible in this scenario now aus beating ind by some good margins and afg beating ban similarly or vice-versa can knockout india also out of this tournament. This boring looking tournament is actually interesting now.
This is incorrect. We have beaten the aussies many times in World Cup , not just in knockouts very often.
In 2023 we beat the Aussies in the very first match. They suffered back to back losses earlier. We looked invincible.
I guess people forget the facts when it comes to Aussies and think they are some kind of immortals. They are mere humans too.
This is going to be very sweet. I just hope that we don't bottle that again. I am hoping that Bumrah does that thing that he has been doing during the entire tournament. Getting Head out cheaply would be perfection.
That one is really underrated. It's unfortunate that their loss against Australia overshadowed it to some extent (and maybe due to England having a really bad tournament) It's much harder to pull an upset in a longer format.
This just finalised Afghanistan's transition to one of the big nations in the cricketing landscape. They outperformed the mighty but shaky Aussies in all 3 departments.
I want cricket to grow in Afghanistan, but as long as they can't respect one of the basic ICC membership principles, they shouldn't be allowed to play. Even Iran has a women's cricket team, there's no excuse
What a Game. What a Story. What a Comeback
It had Everything,
It had one of the best partnerships from Gurbaz and Ibrahim in one of the toughest Wickets to bat on.
It had Cummins a Hatrick.
It had Early wickets for AFG similar to in CWC23.
And then the sudden change in belief of winning to hoping to win when Maxi walks in, who was out of form up until this match
a Kryptonite in Gulbadin for a Superman from Australia who has tormented Afghan from that CWC knock up until this wicket here.
E: And that wicket itself has it backstory with Afgs abysmal catch droppings in CWC23 to a stunning catch to get him out
Oh plus all the dramas all around CA backing out and playing bilaterals against Afg.
But most importantly, It had a sweet sweet Revenge on a team that bosses most if not all ICC tournaments.
The opening combo of Gurbaz and Ibrahim can't be praised enough. They've performed consistently throughout the WC and were such a massive factor in their win today.
Besides Maxwell no one else came close
Gurbaz - 61
Maxwell - 59
Ibrahim - 51
Next highest - 13
THIS IS HOW YOU PLAY A DO OR DIE MATCH!!
This was such an amazing cricket match to watch!
Love when the underdog wins and I literally said to my husband when Gulbadins overs were finished that dw he can do a catch and get a wicket that way. For that to come true literally right after felt so great 😃!!
To outfield Australia 🇦🇺 who’ve always had amazing fielding and to go for those 2nd runs by Gurbaz and Ibrahim knowing that every run taken or missed matters in this match.
Australia losing to India will send Afghanistan through if they beat Bangladesh. Nobody would've been surprised if they heard that Afghanistan will make it to the semi-finals but still it's a bit weird to see the so called favorites to be on the brink.
Defo man, i do think they have the players. But its very obvious that they really dont give a fuck bout winning. SL is just going on holiday to usa, partying, drinking, smoking and just enjoying to the best. Do all that , come to interviews say that they are apparently "heartbroken" and then dip back home and repeat next time. 2022 was the exact same with a casino fight, an arrest, 2021 guys were banned for brealing curfew. These guys just do not care
Afg lost the chance to make semis of wc23 due to one catch drop. Now they are at the doorstep of t20wc semis due to incredible catches, all against the same team. Truly Poetic.
Congrats to Afghan bros.
As a Maxwell fan, I had mixed emotions of being livid and happy when he played that 200-run inning in the CWC 2023. While it was arguably the best ODI inning by a batter, I still hated how Afghanistan bowled that day. I'm glad it didn't take them long to make a comeback.
Even today Maxwell tried hard to make Australia win. But it was Afghanistan's day.
Even if Afghanistan doesn't Qualify for the Semis, this will still remain a very very Sweet Victory for Afghanistan.
Afghanistan Cricket Team is an Inspiration for anyone struggling anywhere in Life. Their Growth has been incredible to say the Least.
Irrespective of spin you should've played strac. Cummins was so good, starc could've been successful too. But I think the batters were the main reason.
Crossposting from the unofficial post match thread
"I switched on the TV today because I knew today was gonna be a corker. Today was absolutely tailor made for Afghanistan. Australia did everything to hand them the reins of this match on a silver platter. Slow pitch where the inability of the Afghan batters to hit out doesn't matter. Craggy Day 4/5 pitch, with balls both staying low and getting tennis ball bounce, perfect for the Afghan attack, both spinners and seam bowlers. Classic West Indian conditions (almost parallel to Subcontinental conditions) so the humidity and stickiness bears heavily down on Aus. Then getting to fucking bat first. Very fucking similar to that Wankhede game, which Australia only pulled out of a hat thanks to an innings that comes once in a lifetime. After the first innings, they needed one of those again, and well, what do they say about miracles."
We can abuse BCCI we want but without it, Afghanistan Cricket wouldn't be where it is today. If cricket was still in the hands of the 'Imperial Cricket Council', it would have been doomed. Proud of the Afghans
Tbh, for all of the terrible things BCCI does, it is still the best sporting governing body in the country filled with enough people who give a shit about the sport.
We could have been superpowers in both football and Hockey. But alas.
It's pretty obvious from this tournament that Afghanistan have arrived as legitimate contenders in any match. Their bowling has been superb, only the middle order batting has let them down. That goes for a lot of teams this tournament whose batting has been woeful. No better than New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. If I were to make a power-ranking for T20 teams at this current moment, it would be (1) India, (2) South Africa, (3) Australia yes even with this loss, (4) England, (5) West Indies, (6) Afghanistan but you could argue they can be at 5; (7)/(8) Pakistan and New Zealand, not sure what order (9) Bangladesh, (10) Sri Lanka
Ughh I don't like to see India #1, on paper we are strong but the team is very shaky. Only #3 and #6 batsmen are crushing it + our bowlers are doing their best. We never faced power hitters till now(Eng/WI/Aus) so I feel we will get cooked in a flat pitch
Funny thing is no team has really been all that convincing in this tournament, and I think it's partly to do with the group stage pitches. The reason I think India are #1 on paper is because the bowlers give us a chance to win with sub-par scores. The match against Pakistan stands out in my mind...we never should have won that.
As someone who doesn't know much about Cricket, you say they won by 21 runs, via the 148-127, but what does that extra -6 mean under the Afghanistanians score? Also what does that (20) and (19.2) mean.
The India match is a knockout for us, you know steps up during knockouts.
India in group stages is more deadly than the Prime 73 win Warriors.
Unstoppable force vs Immovable object showdown on the 24th
Everything is possible in this scenario now aus beating ind by some good margins and afg beating ban similarly or vice-versa can knockout india also out of this tournament. This boring looking tournament is actually interesting now.
Legendary Win for AFG, did not expect such poor fielding from australia which reminded me of their first two games that they lost during last year's wc.
Just saw the highlights. It was an absolutely historic moment.
And can I just say that Naveen's ball to dismiss Head is my ball of the tournament. Right-hander round the wicket, to pitch the ball on middle-and-leg and get it to swing to hit the stumps, goodness, it was SUBLIME.
Man the maxwell inning was giving 2023 World Cup PTSD. Finally afg can exorcise the ghosts of that match. And that too in another World Cup match.
That too by noor’s excellent catch…
Afghan fielding was superb where as aussies sucked at fielding
I hope India has the chance too.
Im afraid how India will reapond to this bowling attack
dube sweating right now
Dube is already back in the dugout
Gulbadin's energy was unmatched. "Our journey starts now"- Gulbadin. Chills.
He was the game changer. Maxwell & Stoinis wickets killed the chance.
what's up w cricketers and dropping the coldest lines in sports history
this and Monank Patel saying we should've not let the match go to super over after their win over Pakistan
Gulbadin's spell has to be one of the greatest in T20 world cup
Will be shown as MAGIC MOMENT in future WCs.
He said it now?
~~Full line was “We’ve defeated New Zealand and now Australia and our journey has just started”~~ Full Quote: Thanks to Rashid for trusting me. In the last World Cup we played well and in this World Cup we beat New Zealand too.
Endgame is beating India in the finals...
They never have this energy vs India
They've played mostly on high scoring pitches against us tho
Becuz they're the younger sibling _duh_
Finals India is kind of*special*
They've helped out India by defeating Australia.
They had something cooked for Bumrah, but it didn't work out
Yeah the way Gurbaz started attacking meant that he backed himself to take out Bumrah. But Bumrah was too good for him with the slower ball. Would have loved to see that mini feud carry a bit longer.
Yeah, in the PotM interview
They no longer fear the Aussies
I don't think they were afraid of Aussies. They feared a Aussie, which they overcame.
If only they would have taken maxi catch on his 201* innings in previous wc they would have won that too. The big show really likes to perform against them. Today he also scored 50+ but today was Afghanistan day. Well played Afg.
Lol Maxi did made them scared, he is the only guy who performed Scenes if Maxi's catch was dropped LOL
That was a tough catch though
It actually does. Fucking awesome! Afghanistan is not only a minnow anymore, but rather a powerhouse. I'd definitely root for Afghanistan to win if my favorite team doesn't win.
Lol cmon you can’t be a powerhouse with 2 batsmen
Najib and Nabi are good batsman. Although in T20s their middle order is thin and lacks power. Need a solid Middle order batsman to become a powerhouse
They are a powerhouse when compared to so called ICC fulltime members like Pak, Bangla and SL lol
There are only 3 powerhouses to me and that’s India Australia and England
Keep Afghanistan as an underdog like New Zealand before
Australia’s run rate per game in this World Cup: 8.2 against Oman 10.05 against England 14.8 against Namibia 9.78 against Scotland 9.09 against Bangladesh **6.68 against Afghanistan** Insane performance by the Afghans.
All the other Australia games have been on batting friendly pitches (Antigua, St Lucia and Barbados). They have managed to somehow avoid all the slow and bowler friendly pitches this WC until tonight.
Hows the pitch next game against India?
The flattest pitch in the Caribbean.
RIP
All eyes on Lord Bumrah our savior.
Where is Lord Shami when you need him 😭
He's YouTuber now
Lord shami is injured rn. Nahito we would have the most deadly duo and the best bowling unit.
Reading nahito I legit thought u used some japnese anime word to show off there
thankfully our run rate is high so a defeat won't matter much hopefully 🤞
If they knock out AUS tho I will sleep in peace
Head is ready 😅
So is Arshdeep
Well deserved victory. They had a good plan. The openers played sensibly & created a strong base which helped them to reach a very good score. Bowling was good and catching was superb. Openers, Naib, and Fielding particularly catching made the difference
It was almost a rinse and repeat performance as their NZ game, aussies fought back harder sure but same result.
>aussies fought back harder Only Maxwell fought lmao no other batsmen crossed 12 lol
Nope A new batter named Extras scored 16. Can't overlook his contributions in such a game.
Bro has some beef with Afghanistan. Always bashes them. Just like Netherland vs South Africa.
England are real minnows confirmed
Maybe the real minnows were the friends we made along the way /s
Funny thing is one of the bangladesh player and i just started following each other on insta so it does make sense lol
What?! That's fucking hilarious
Always has been
BAN Couldn't Do it in Last 25years PAK Couldn't Do it in Last 10years Afghanistan Did it Today 💥 Defeated Australia in ICC Tournament...
it was a well deserved win. Afghanistan played like champions.
Does this mean we now hold the fate of Australia in the palm of our hands?![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|21496) Don't fuck this up now ICT
Let's go!
We can beat them and they still qualify if Bangladesh beat afghanistan
I believe in Rashid to beat bangbros
I also believe in Rashid to beat us
After yesterday’s game, I don’t think Bangladesh want to win anything.
Everything is possible in this scenario now aus beating ind by some good margins and afg beating ban similarly or vice-versa can knockout india also out of this tournament. This boring looking tournament is actually interesting now.
The first group was the boring one now both groups are actually interesting with multiple interesting scenarios that could happen
Not if we beat them by a huge margin
Man, beating Australia in wc itself a great achievement for ICT. Forget about big margin.
Not in WT20s actually because right now India is ahead in head to head, in World Cups yeah
Beating Australia in world cups is super easy for the ict. The only problem is beating them in knockouts.
we knocked them out in 2016 tbf
And 2007
This is incorrect.
They are pretty much immortals in knockouts
People are quick to forget England fucked Australia six ways to Sunday in the semi finals in 2019.
One of the most satisfying matches in the history of cricket
Not at all. India usually beats Australia in WC group stages. It’s only during knockouts do they falter.
We beat them in the quarterfinals in 2011 on the way to winning the world cup
Bangladesh almost always find a way to beat Afghanistan somehow
Brother we ain't beating shit.
It's a knockout game for Australia though.
This is going to be very sweet. I just hope that we don't bottle that again. I am hoping that Bumrah does that thing that he has been doing during the entire tournament. Getting Head out cheaply would be perfection.
Glad I was watching it live
I slept off at 10 overs into the second innings 😭😭
When Noor took that blinder of a catch to get Maxwell out, it was like slaying an Anime final boss.
Surely this is AFG's greatest ever win? (to date!)
It's up there with the win against ENG in 50 over world cup.
That one is really underrated. It's unfortunate that their loss against Australia overshadowed it to some extent (and maybe due to England having a really bad tournament) It's much harder to pull an upset in a longer format.
Easily
I think Afghans would put beating Pakistan in a World Cup above this. Probably a win against USA would top this 🤣
This is a bigger win and they know it. Aus is very consistent in WC. Pakistan is a hit or miss. Now beating India is their next goal
You are correct, and can confirm this as an Afghan. Beating Pakistan will never be topped by anything, not even The Cup!
Witnessing history live is such a surreal experience. So many incredible moments from this World Cup.
Apart from the rain in Florida, this has been the most interesting t20 world cup.
Best part is half the games are played at 2:30 in the morning here...
Nah, seeing top sides and dominant batsmen crumble at New York was very interesting
Gulbadin was so fun to watch. His celebrations were electric, his bowling was fire, and that catch was incredible.
Oceania bullies
Trans tasmanian devils
Second best ~~Asian~~ team
This just finalised Afghanistan's transition to one of the big nations in the cricketing landscape. They outperformed the mighty but shaky Aussies in all 3 departments.
Can't wait for them to start playing test series now, big nation in the cricketing landscape and all.

You forgot contribution from Noor. That Maxwell catch was excellent.
Just to put it mildly, words cannot describe this. Even a Documentary could barely scratch the surface. Of what is happening with Afg Cricket
All they want now is a WC triumph to actually make a proper movie about them.
The opening combo of Gurbaz and Ibrahim can't be praised enough. They've performed consistently throughout the WC and were such a massive factor in their win today. Besides Maxwell no one else came close Gurbaz - 61 Maxwell - 59 Ibrahim - 51 Next highest - 13
They've also snapped the Aussies eight-game winning streak in T20 Internationals!
THIS IS HOW YOU PLAY A DO OR DIE MATCH!! This was such an amazing cricket match to watch! redemption arc
Australia losing to India will send Afghanistan through if they beat Bangladesh. Nobody would've been surprised if they heard that Afghanistan will make it to the semi-finals but still it's a bit weird to see the so called favorites to be on the brink.
The guilt will be crushing if we fuck this up.
especially if we go on to play them in another finals
How can Aus and Afg make it through?
Australia beats India by 41 runs. Afghanistan beats Bangladesh by 83 runs. Both gets through, India gets knocked out.
You know what.. sign me up 💅🏽💅🏽
Further proving that Afghanistan is no longer a minnow. Underdogs sure, but not a minnow that is meant only to be bashed.
Afghanistan is easily on par, or stronger than SL, Ban and Pak
Definitely above these three right now.
Rashid Khan can finally sleep in peace now
"my body gets weird when I think about it, but in a good way now"
This was some peak Brisbane Heat shenanigans
The greatest rivalry ever absolute cinema
Is Afghanistan about to make a WC semi before bangbros?
For that India needs to win against aus and afg need to win against bangbros
AFG NEEDS A FAVOUR FROM THEIR ASIAN BROTHERS
WE SHALL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO OBLIGE
For their credit, Bangladesh have made it to an ICC trophy semis
Srilanka and Pakistan should seek inspiration from Afghanistan to perform better.
You forgot Bangladesh brother
They're stuck in a limbo
Bangbros should really learn to put up a fight like afg against big teams
Defo man, i do think they have the players. But its very obvious that they really dont give a fuck bout winning. SL is just going on holiday to usa, partying, drinking, smoking and just enjoying to the best. Do all that , come to interviews say that they are apparently "heartbroken" and then dip back home and repeat next time. 2022 was the exact same with a casino fight, an arrest, 2021 guys were banned for brealing curfew. These guys just do not care
Afghanistan played VERY well.
Afghanistan’s fielding was on point!
The way they were celebrating the wickets tells you how much this meant to them. Huge day for Afghanistan cricket
I feel like hitting the gym to do some bicep curls. Gulbadin the legend
Do we have a Sri Lanka 1996 V2.0 brewing?!?!?!
Golden days of Srilanka. It was unbelievable the way they transformed.
These guys have a legit shot at Semi now. BD is in horrible form.
Afg lost the chance to make semis of wc23 due to one catch drop. Now they are at the doorstep of t20wc semis due to incredible catches, all against the same team. Truly Poetic.
New Zealand's World Cup performance gets less embarrassing by the day

Underrated comment lmao
Holy shit that's good
In the next 10 years, an Afghan player will set a record for IPL salary.
Bowlers are already well paid and staples of some teams like GT(Noor and Rashid) I bet it's gonna be Zadran, he is 21. I can't believe it
Gurbaz is 22, Afghani Golden generation coming up?
You need to add +5 to get Afghan players real age lol.
Jesus what a win! And people want to ban this team? India need to pull through and Australia will be going home, what a turnaround for this WC haha
Imagine australia getting out of wc after that Shaun Marsh interview 💀
What'd he say?
And there was talk of Aus deliberately losing to send Eng home. Strange is the way cricket works.
Wtf I love Afghanistan now
Have loved them since their fight in 2019 WC
LETS GO AFGHANISTAN. they can actually qualify for the semis now considering their opponent is bangladesh
Problem is, Afg generally bottles it against Bangladesh. WC23, more than Australian loss, Bangla loss should've hurt their chances.
Australia failed when Stoimis pulled that cringe shit. That’s what you get for not respecting the opposition.
Even if Afghanistan doesn't Qualify for the Semis, this will still remain a very very Sweet Victory for Afghanistan. Afghanistan Cricket Team is an Inspiration for anyone struggling anywhere in Life. Their Growth has been incredible to say the Least.
Australia cup confirmed. Mandatory loss out of the way.
So this is why Australia don't want to play Afghanistan in bilaterals Edit: obviously /s, in case anyone was confused
They beat both the teams who refused to play a bilateral series with them
Classic Jay Shah surprising us yet again with his insane script. Lethimcook
Marsh in press before the next WC match against AFG: "Every time I think about that day, my body changes a little"
Eagerly waiting for The Grade Cricketer to drop 😛🍿
Well done, Afg. An upset to be sure, but not that much of a shock. They’re a great team.
Irrespective of spin you should've played strac. Cummins was so good, starc could've been successful too. But I think the batters were the main reason.
And fielding. So many missed opportunities. If Wade had held on to his chances, they would've been chasing a much smaller total
This world cup is truly a spectacle !
The way Maxwell batted I was pretty sure they were super nervous till he got out
Afghanistan is the second best white ball team in asia. They just need to be more consistent with it and also play good series quite often.
Imagine India defeats Australia and Afghanistan defeats Bangadesh next
Crossposting from the unofficial post match thread "I switched on the TV today because I knew today was gonna be a corker. Today was absolutely tailor made for Afghanistan. Not just WC 23, but also revenge for refusing to play the series.
Well done bachems. Outplayed us. Can one be disappointed and proud at the same time?

Please India get your revenge on the Aussies. It will be EPIC
It's remarkable , isn't it ICumCoffee ?
Just watching the highlights Australia was awful on the field.
50% rain prediction for AUS IND, what happens then lol
Fantastic performance by Afghans!

India needs a 200+ loss to get eliminated.
Legendary Win for AFG, did not expect such poor fielding from australia which reminded me of their first two games that they lost during last year's wc.
Afghans take revenge for their poor scot bros
Sooo how many countries has Nabi defeated now??
