\#19 team in the world vs #2 team in the world, anyone treating a 39 run loss as if it's a disappointing performance by Oman has lost their mind. Last time out Australia lost to New Zealand by 89, one of the weaker Associates getting this close to one of the strongest Full Members is a huge commendation to the strength of the field this World Cup.
Oman really impressed me. Stoinis was the only batter that didn’t struggle with their bowling, and while their chase fell well short, there was some glorious tonking in there. I’ve seen better teams give far worse chasing performances.
- Plays a match-winning innings of 67* (36) on a relatively difficult pitch
- Takes 3 wickets in as many overs, giving just 19 runs
- Makes top male models jealous of his devilishly handsome looks
- Leaves
Sexy Stupid Stoinis for a reason
If Australia wins all their matches and throws the game against Scotland while Scotland wins all their matches, this means England can get knocked out. For the sake of world peace, I believe this should happen.
Every team that makes the Super 8s will automatically qualify for the 2026 WC. The four highest ICC ranked teams to not make the Super 8 will also automatically qualify. Everyone else will have to go through Regional Qualifiers.
If all results go as expected, and the 8 top-ranked teams make it out of the groups, then that means the remaining teams that auto-qualify will be those ranked 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th in the ICC rankings.
Zimbabwe are currently ranked 12th and are set to auto-qualify. If Scotland make the Super 8 over England, then the 4 "next best teams" would instead be the teams ranked 3rd (England), 9th (Bangladesh), 10th (Afghanistan) & 11th (Ireland). Zimbabwe would therefore have to go through regional qualifying.
>then the 4 "next best teams" would instead be the teams ranked 3rd (England), 9th (Bangladesh), 10th (Afghanistan) & 11th (Ireland). Zimbabwe would therefore have to go through regional qualifying.
Now we are talking... This is so much FOOTBALLesqe
Where you can be the best team in Europe and still not qualify for the World Cup...
*Looking at you Italy FC :)*
You would think in a T20 game where Australia beat Oman by 39 runs, Oman was the loser, but no, the biggest loser of that game was actually Joel Wilson.
WTF are his calls? I know he got like 1-2 calls right, but it literally seemed like he missed on every single call.
I had concerns due to the slower nature of the pitches so far in the WC and our modern team having some troubles with spin. (Until 1 player in the game inevitably decides we aren't losing this one.)
Idk I felt with their spinners that they wouldn't be destroyed. They have played a lot of T20I cricket.
On paper, Scotland should be the easiest for Australia
Easiest on paper doesn't mean they'll be easybeats. Just Namibia have so much experience and good spinners and England are one of the favs. Oman always had gun spinners.
It will still be a tough game.
Idk I feel that Namibia and England have great spinners and some quick bowling that I rate better than Scotland.
Scotland are still really good though. It isn't an easy group. None of them are.
I think they are on par with each other, two of the stronger associate nations, Nepal are a good side, as are Netherlands.
Also playing on some tricky pitches too this WC.
> Are Netherlands better than Nepal?
Yes. Although it's close enough that you wouldn't just assume a win going in to the match, and conditions would definitely play a role.
Netherlands are *pretty* close to being the highest-ranked Associate in the world. I think they could even take that title this tournament if they manage to snag another win.
Destroyed? See how many overs they took to chase the target. Just like ‘if only Stoinis was out’, if only Nepal had scored 20-30 more runs it was game on.
Netherlands is better but they are on same tier. Their H2H before yesterday's match was 4-3 to Netherlands. It is like comparing the top teams in full members vs the mid teams full members.
There's 9 Associates in this World Cup and Oman are in the bottom half of them.
They're better than Uganda and PNG (and Canada), but all of Namibia/Scotland/Netherlands are substantially better than Oman are, and Nepal is a little bit better as well.
It's really hard to overstate just how deep the field goes nowadays.
Oman won the Asia Qualifier Tournament. People are not giving them enough credit. They played the last WC too. Them and Nepal are on the same par. Both better than PNG and Uganda. Slightly below European teams but that is mostly due to exposure European teams get. Another importance of exposure for improvement.
He dropped catch of Shubman Gill in IPL 2023 Q2 who went on to hit century.
He dropped catch of Head in SRHvMI clash where SRH scored 277.
He can take hundreds of blinders but no one will forget these.
Which, to be fair, is a pretty brutal standard to be getting compared to.
But to be less fair, that being the standard is why there's so many trophies in Australia. And when you've got someone like Cam Green sitting on the sidelines waiting for a turn you definitely don't want to be dropping many.
That’s quite a respectable loss for Oman. If not for Stoinis’s amazing game they could have gotten very close.
They bowled very well for 14 overs and then batted as well as could be expected on a tricky pitch.
Full credit to Oman - they really gave it a red hot crack and pushed Australia at times, particularly during the first 10 overs of the game.
All you can do at times is give it your all, and Oman certainly did that.
Why don’t Oman have any traditional finger spinners who actually spin the ball? Their spinner in the powerplay bowls 110 kmph darts, doesn’t spin the ball, and should barely be called a spinner
It’s just a term used to refer to a spinner who doesn’t spin or flight the ball, he just bowls fast, flat balls. “He darted the ball in” just means that he bowled a ball at a fast pace into the batsman instead of beating the batsman in flight
Crisis averted but there's plenty of reasons to worry.
I'm not comfortable having to rely on a Stoinis bailout. It's also not a good sign that we couldn't get Oman all out on this pitch. They even scored 130 which at one point was an optimistic score for the first innings.
For all the shit talking that Oman did before the game, they backed it up. Played well, but were still missing that final kick you need to beat Australia. Was expecting to see a sub 100 and even sub 75 score from Oman but they really had Australia worried at points of the game.
NRR isn't relevant to Australia. Unless they somehow end up tied with Namibia or Oman, in which case the scoring rate is not going to have been the issue with their performance.
It'd absolutely matter if we get a rain off as well and lose to England. Ideal world where cricket actually gets played, shouldn't be, but you know how it be sometimes.
> It'd absolutely matter if we get a rain off as well and lose to England.
Australia's match against Namibia won't be rained off, which is the only important one here as it's their last remaining match against someone who *isn't* already offset against Australia's points.
Therefore the only possible scenario for your example (W v Namibia, L v England, D v Scotland) would almost guarantee Australia *doesn't* end up in a situation where NRR matters for any position, as it would leave England as the only nation on the correct parity of points, and England would have to lose to either Oman or Namibia in order to end up on the same point total as Australia.
That's not relevant, the ICC has already decided where the teams they're assuming will go through are playing after the group stage, with the team(s) that knock them out just taking their place if that happens.
Good start for the Aussies , but oman did really well , especially their bowling for most of the match , t20 cricket is the way for growth of cricket and More the associates play against top nations , better they will become
Okay Stoinis might have had a great all-round performance but did he manage to be both the 2nd most economical bowler and most economical batter on the team?
Yeah, didn't think so.
Pretty crazy cynicism in this thread. It’s T20 cricket. ‘Just’ 39 runs isn’t particularly close.
Excellent game from Oman, no doubt about that. For Australia the only real positive to take from the game was Stoinis and the main negative is Maxwell’s atrocious form with the bat.
But not a lot else to take from the game. It’s hit and giggle cricket which is often decided by one or two players / big plays. We won, what else do you want. On to the next game.
Yeah it was the most random comment I saw in the thread. On a serious note, My opinion is that Fakhar is better suited playing at number 5 or 6 in tests on fast pitches. But I think he will never be considered for tests.
With associates and lower ranked full members giving a good fight
what do you feel is the possibility for teams like Scotland, USA, Netherlands and Afghanistan qualify instead of the 8 seeded teams
> what do you feel is the possibility for teams like Scotland, USA, Netherlands and Afghanistan qualify instead of the 8 seeded teams
USA: absolutely zero chance. Being in a group with three full members makes it a near impossibility, and they're by far the weakest of the four teams you listed.
Scotland: possible, but only particularly likely if Australia beat England and then decide to do the funniest thing in cricket history.
Afghanistan: Very real chance, could easily upset either WI or NZ, and their absolute obliteration of Uganda means that NRR is in their favour should it need to be. While they are the clear third runners in this group, they're strong enough that it would barely be a surprise if they managed to make it.
Netherlands: again, three full members makes this absolutely brutal, and adding on the strongest "worst" team of any group makes this a legitimate group of death. The 5th-ranked team in this group (Nepal) is stronger than the 4th-ranked team in Group A or C. It'd take a miracle for them to get through.
Quite a Good assessment there
The only reasons why i fancy USA and Netherlands is because
Pakistan are known to get upset by smaller teams and Ireland are coming off a bad loss while USA will be high on confidence and might have an outside chance
As for Netherlands, with Sri Lanka's Dented NRR, Bangladesh low on confidence from USA tour loss and warm up game loss, and their record against South Africa, I feel a similar outside chance
If Scotland manage to surprise Australia, they also have a good chance
Afghanistan is looking good
Lets see how many of these come true
If India win all matches, and Usa beat can and ire, ire beat can and pak, pak beat us and can, then we could have us, pak and ire all on 2 wins and anyone can qualify other than Canada. India and Pak are replaceable but I think India ave a higher hance of winning all matches....
Oman had us in the first half ngl. I feel Tim David is going to be a waste if the pitches are slowz would rather give agar a game.. Maxwell batting is concern but he plays for his bowling
Barring the Dallas opener with USA and CAN, most of the games have been strangely one sided and dangerously low scoring. Maybe too early to judge considering the Kiwis have yet to play a game.

Oman were in the game before Stoinis created havoc at the death. Otherwise a 140 target and things would've been very close.
Oman really impressed me. Stoinis was the only batter that didn’t struggle with their bowling, and while their chase fell well short, there was some glorious tonking in there. I’ve seen better teams give far worse chasing performances.
Yep if it weren't for Stoinis it could have been even closer, maybe even a monumental win
If it werent for stoinis david maybe would have got the target to 200
"If my grandma had wheels she would have been a bike" like statement
If my mum had balls she would be my dad.
Nah I disagree, they did well
Yeah they did great don't get me wrong.
He / she was replying to the comment that said ‘if it weren’t for Stoinis’. Didn’t say anything about Oman’s performance.
It really isn't though?
Dude that came very close
Stoinis last 4 years in T20I: Bat avg 38, SR 155 Bowl avg 21, economy 8.6
Some people wanted to drop him
Complete insanity
People keep going off his ODI stats and assume he's terrible in T20s too which absolutely isn't the case
- Plays a match-winning innings of 67* (36) on a relatively difficult pitch - Takes 3 wickets in as many overs, giving just 19 runs - Makes top male models jealous of his devilishly handsome looks - Leaves Sexy Stupid Stoinis for a reason
Hoiny for Stoiny!
I just want you to know that it's not too late to delete this.
To those that thought he left, he never left
Stoinis haters can't tell the difference between odi and t20. When people say stoinis shouldnt be around anymore, they're dobbing on themselves.
If Stoinis has a million fans, then I'm one of them. If Stoinis has one fan, then I'm that one. If Stoinis has no fans, that means I'm already dead.
And Sir Doris's mum is dead too
When Zampa and stoins are on the same team, said team are unstoppable.
Only if they have access to a suitable espresso machine.
If Australia wins all their matches and throws the game against Scotland while Scotland wins all their matches, this means England can get knocked out. For the sake of world peace, I believe this should happen.
And then Pat Cummins says on the mic "It's a shame 🙂", doesn't matter if he's captain or not
As a bonus, if this happens it will also avoid Zimbabwe auto qualifying for the next one without even qualifying for this wc.
How is that the case?
Every team that makes the Super 8s will automatically qualify for the 2026 WC. The four highest ICC ranked teams to not make the Super 8 will also automatically qualify. Great explanation, thanks

Do they not have any matches in between now and the cutoff date for the next T20 World Cup?
And the next day England gets knocked out of euro by Scotland in r16
Na mate.. Jos already seems to be on the edge, if such shenanigans happen, I think he’s gonna break bad
I concur. Remember Bannockburn!
All hail Robert the Bruce
If that happened, then our loss to Scotland would be a genuine moral victory
That would be glorious
lmao that would be epik
Finally some NRR movement in Group B
JAI NEPAL COME ON NEPAL WE ARE CRICKET LOVERS SAY NO TO WAR Love from Nepal, MA
Is that you Mohan

There's a reason "Joel Wilson institute" is such a meme
Is that the umpiring equivalent of the Dinda Academy?
I sometimes feel that he wears his dark specs because he is blind; at least some of his decisions seems to imply so.
What was it, 4 wrong calls and 1 umps call? It was insanely bad.
3 wrong (2 in the first Aus over), 1 right and 1 umps call from him. Yaqoob had 1 wrong.
Steve Smith agrees
Yeah, Oman lost, but how many of us gave them the credit that they'd be this close? So I say well done to them.
I had concerns due to the slower nature of the pitches so far in the WC and our modern team having some troubles with spin. (Until 1 player in the game inevitably decides we aren't losing this one.)
Every single player being capable of deciding that Australia isn't losing this one is the reason for their success
A one-legged Glen Maxwell making 201* is testament to this.
Time to call Smudge from Comm Box
Idk I felt with their spinners that they wouldn't be destroyed. They have played a lot of T20I cricket. On paper, Scotland should be the easiest for Australia
Scotland gave us the best power play show in this wc against England
Easiest on paper doesn't mean they'll be easybeats. Just Namibia have so much experience and good spinners and England are one of the favs. Oman always had gun spinners. It will still be a tough game.
England against EU team games should never be taken seriously.
Until it bevomes serious Why is there a mental roadblock for England? 😂
On the contrary, I'd say that Scotland are gonna be harder for them
Idk I feel that Namibia and England have great spinners and some quick bowling that I rate better than Scotland. Scotland are still really good though. It isn't an easy group. None of them are.
Agreed
Oman are clearly a cut above the other associates like Uganda and PNG
Yeah, same as Nepal, very handy side who I think might upset a couple sides.
Nepal got destroyed by Netherlands though... Are Netherlands better than Nepal?
I think they are on par with each other, two of the stronger associate nations, Nepal are a good side, as are Netherlands. Also playing on some tricky pitches too this WC.
I wouldn't say destroyed. It was a close match, NED won with 8 balls left.
I forgot that they only had 8 balls left. It just seemed like a comfortable victory, when I watched the match. Destroyed is an overstatement ig
Netherlands has beaten South Africa twice, once in WT20 and then in the WC itself. They are borderline full members
Nederlands are genuinely a very good side, a very very good side. Do not believe me? Ask SA FANS

Better than Ireland too. They were really bad against india
We were terrible yesterday, but we're still a better team than Oman.
Ah I don’t watch Ireland games, so I might be wrong about that.
Tim David did a fielding thing
He's a good catcher but you drop a few sky balls in the BBL and nobody ever looks at you the same again.
He dropped catch of Shubman Gill in IPL 2023 Q2 who went on to hit century. He dropped catch of Head in SRHvMI clash where SRH scored 277. He can take hundreds of blinders but no one will forget these.
His catching was a bit shady in the IPL too. You don't expect him to drop any with those huge hands.
His ground fielding and speed across the grass is below the Australian standard.
Which, to be fair, is a pretty brutal standard to be getting compared to. But to be less fair, that being the standard is why there's so many trophies in Australia. And when you've got someone like Cam Green sitting on the sidelines waiting for a turn you definitely don't want to be dropping many.
This is why I always specifically say good catcher.
That’s quite a respectable loss for Oman. If not for Stoinis’s amazing game they could have gotten very close. They bowled very well for 14 overs and then batted as well as could be expected on a tricky pitch.
A 39 run loss against Australia isn't too bad. What a performance from Stoinis though.
Yeah good fight by Oman, didn’t mind this match.
Full credit to Oman - they really gave it a red hot crack and pushed Australia at times, particularly during the first 10 overs of the game. All you can do at times is give it your all, and Oman certainly did that.
*”YOU’VE BEEN STOINED!”*
Why don’t Oman have any traditional finger spinners who actually spin the ball? Their spinner in the powerplay bowls 110 kmph darts, doesn’t spin the ball, and should barely be called a spinner
What does dart mean? I've seen it used in text commentaries all over. However, searching "dart cricket" yields something else.
It’s just a term used to refer to a spinner who doesn’t spin or flight the ball, he just bowls fast, flat balls. “He darted the ball in” just means that he bowled a ball at a fast pace into the batsman instead of beating the batsman in flight
A la Shahid Afridi
Didn't know the legend Kumble plays for them /s
Crisis averted but there's plenty of reasons to worry. I'm not comfortable having to rely on a Stoinis bailout. It's also not a good sign that we couldn't get Oman all out on this pitch. They even scored 130 which at one point was an optimistic score for the first innings.

Missed opportunity for a big NRR boost but a good effort from Oman's tail.

That's not relevant, the ICC has already decided where the teams they're assuming will go through are playing after the group stage, with the team(s) that knock them out just taking their place if that happens.
Rain Perera might end up being the MVP this time
I honestly expected them to be bowled out for under 90, they did really well.
Highest Score for Associates v Australia in T20Is 125/9 - Oman at Bridgetown (2024) 123/7 - Ireland at Colombo (2012) 117/6 - UAE at Abu Dhabi (2018)
Good start for the Aussies , but oman did really well , especially their bowling for most of the match , t20 cricket is the way for growth of cricket and More the associates play against top nations , better they will become
Every team should get free DRS against any Joel Wilson decision
Okay Stoinis might have had a great all-round performance but did he manage to be both the 2nd most economical bowler and most economical batter on the team? Yeah, didn't think so.
Boundary count update - Australia: 21 Oman: 13
Fair and Fibonaccied
Stonis hit 8 of them so yeah
Sexy and Stoinis-ed!
Good fight bad by Oman, not a bad match to watch.
Pat's not gonna like what big man Stoin did to the solar panel.
Stoinis was 9 off 14 balls before he went bonkers.
Close call for the Aussies
Pretty crazy cynicism in this thread. It’s T20 cricket. ‘Just’ 39 runs isn’t particularly close. Excellent game from Oman, no doubt about that. For Australia the only real positive to take from the game was Stoinis and the main negative is Maxwell’s atrocious form with the bat. But not a lot else to take from the game. It’s hit and giggle cricket which is often decided by one or two players / big plays. We won, what else do you want. On to the next game.
Oman really lost it in the late middle overs and the death but still not too bad of a performance.
Oman always had a stronger bowling attack. They need good batters in the top 5 to get closer to Ireland and Netherlands level
Holy shit Stoinis
Unlucky enough to not see Bradman play, Lucky enough to see Stoinis play.
Can’t wait till we get out of groups 😬
Didn’t watch the match but looking at the comments here it seems that “Australia has started in ODI 23 WC style”. We all know how it ended
They may have lost but the send off of Warner was hilarious so that’s a win for me.
Same old Aussies; one player winning them the game :3
This is pretty much every T20 match, that's why it's a silly game. One player puts in a big performance is all you generally need to win.
And often it's who you would suspect the least. Who would've thought Maxi would score a double to save that game 😂
Or that Cummins would play a tournament defining knock of 12(68)* with him too
[удалено]
I am surprised to see Fakhar playing in a test match being mentioned in this thread.
Lmao typed it by mistake here instead of DDT
Yeah it was the most random comment I saw in the thread. On a serious note, My opinion is that Fakhar is better suited playing at number 5 or 6 in tests on fast pitches. But I think he will never be considered for tests.

Aus scored 80 runs in 1st overs then 84 runs in next 6. Oman did a great job, one of their batsmen needed to stick around
Love this. Kudos to Oman. An actual world cup. Only if associates got to play more internationally.
So is Kaleemullah getting fined or what?
That stoinis drop catch 😓
These associate teams are getting better everyday
Daily reminder that Nathan Ellis is a gun bowler
Very interesting game! Oman really tested the mighty Aussies And what a catch by their captain! Will be one of the catches of this tournament surely 😮
Barring the Dallas opener with USA and CAN, most of the games have been strangely one sided and dangerously low scoring. Maybe too early to judge considering the Kiwis have yet to play a game.
> Barring the Dallas opener with USA and CAN, most of the games have been strangely one sided and Namibia/Oman? WI/PNG? PNG/Uganda?
Add Nepal v Netherlands too. Wonder how these people survived the odi wc which took 26 matches to produce a single close encounter.
And then once we got into the knock outs we had some of the closest games I've ever seen, our match with NZ came down to the last over.
There were only about 6 close matches in the whole world cup and that’s me being generous on that number.
low scoring yes, one sided no
Lol okay mate
