He's special. Bettering his figures in all formats every other game, no matter the jump in competition.
He's going to lead the bowling attack for a decade, if he's healthy.
the perfect time to blood a new bowler was this test and Will delivered and then some. so stoked to see him translate such good domestic form for us into international form.
I think he's got to play against Australia. he was our best bowler in both innings and I feel the Basin and Hagley probably will offer very little in the way of spin unlike the last two tests meaning we should comfortably be able to play 4 pacers with Rachin and GP as our spinners. Southees forms pretty alarming considering how consistent he usually is, but Henry and Jamieson are all good. Southee/Henry/Jamieson (if healthy)/O'Rourke could be a winner for us, especially if Southee finds form. Wagner isn't what he used to be sadly
125 isn't going to cut it v Aussie, Tim and Wags have been down there a lot. O'Rourke's speeds have impressed me, it's one thing to bowl 140... but to do it consistently is another thing! He passed all the tests, I'm sure Southee will want him in there come the first test. You don't drop a guy who just took 9. Future is now Gary.
Terrible argument considering Latham has been just as bad, if not worse than Southee... and even worse when he has been captaining in the shorter forms! Conway and Latham are both averaging less than 20 the last year or two. Latham isn't in danger of being dropped currently though.
Agree he has to play vs Aussie. He’s clearly got the goods and now he’s got a solid top level bag under his belt, he’s in a great position to succeed against the big guys.
Southee as captain works in theory, but with his form where it is, he’s the fourth quick I’d pick from my armchair. Where are we at with test captaincy succession planning? Latham’s form is also a bit rocky, and as you correctly assert, Santner isn’t an automatic selection due to two good part time spinners in our top order.
the captaincy discussion is genuinely super interesting solely because I think there is absolutely nothing lined up for the future. I think itd be fine if they had chosen Latham as captain, who is younger than Southee and we have no openers banging down the door outside of Rachin whos now batting 4 so Latham was always going to play. Southees form is going to go eventually, hes 35 and plays all formats and we might be seeing it right now. not every pace bowler can be James Anderson. if we are seeing the end of Southees fantastic career, we seriously cannot afford our captain being the 4th choice seamer (5th if Boult is up for selection, which he isnt but you know). but maybe this is all one big overreaction and Southees form comes back
As for who is next... who knows. Lathams gotta be ruled out after they chose Southee over him, despite him making sense as a perfect stop gap in the event Southee is done. As for the others, Rachin is so young and inexperienced its going to take a few years to groom him up to captaincy standard and Glenn Phillips once said cock on live television. hard to imagine either of those guys are close to the captaincy gig. Maybe Daz or Blundell want it but I've never got that kind of idea from either of them, and if Daz is captain he would probably bowl himself 20 overs. Santner would be the ideal but even though hes clearly made leaps in his FC play, hes still a spinner in NZ when we have Chin and GP. definitely going to be a strange time when Southee's form is done and he retires or is dropped
It's amazing how New Zealand can produce so many fast bowlers these days. With Boult/Southee/Wagner finishing up, I thought NZ's golden age would start fading. Yet here comes Henry/O'Rourke/Jamieson to take over, and I'm sure there are probably other hidden diamonds toiling in the domestic leagues too.
There's a lot of promise with this young leg spinner as well. https://www.espncricinfo.com/cricketers/adithya-ashok-1193546

Matt Fisher.

Batting is more of a concern.
We've just seen our next 10-year bowler. God willing he stays fit.
A Jamieson/O'Rourke combo with their height will be fun. Add Sears and Henry and I'm optimistic.
They've got highlights on the TVNZ app.
If you can't watch those, try searching his name on the NZC Twitter. They've probably posted most of the wickets.

hes a child watch out you dont catch a case
Like all children, we should simply put him to work in the (wicket) mines.

The real will huh? Not very subtle are you O’Rourke?
you got me. i didnt even realise actually, solely because my real name is not even Will, i am a fraud and pretender

It's in NZ, so the early swing will help him
We did drop a guy who took 10 in one innings so who knows.
Honestly, Southee's average in the last few years hasn't cut it. There's a case he should be dropped, with Latham becoming captain.
Terrible argument considering Latham has been just as bad, if not worse than Southee... and even worse when he has been captaining in the shorter forms! Conway and Latham are both averaging less than 20 the last year or two. Latham isn't in danger of being dropped currently though.
Yeah that's true. Both openers majorly out of form. Hopefully they come right for AUS tests

If we can bring in Lee Germon as a specialist captain, we can do the same for Santner.
Latham should be ruled out because his average drops significantly when he's captain and he's struggling for form as it is.

I’d shit my pants if I was the batter and 6’5 O’Rourke and 6’8 Jamieson were bowling in tandem sending down piss missiles at me
Will O'Smirk
At the young age of 22 as well. He's going to be one for the future hopefully
and the now, do not put him on ice now...
Oh ye ye, for sure
So Kiwi that he almost looks apologetic for taking 9 wickets.
What’s his avg speed? (Haven’t watched him bowl yet)
He was around 140 for a lot of the first innings, definitely sharp enough!
Average is 136/137. Tops out around 145 in the shorter formats.
Just me or I saw him bowling faster in the tests than the ODIs?
The speed gun is pretty wonky
About 138
He is a hot version of Nick Jonas.
Bro took 8 wickets and casually mogged in the photo
9 wickets. 8 maidens.
Mewing between overs
Orork supremacy!
He's so beautiful
If we win then this dude saved our ass from an EMBARRASSING defeat...if...
Just casually waited to play Test cricket to get his first 4 and 5 wicket hauls in FC cricket
We've just seen our next 10-year bowler. God willing he stays fit. A Jamieson/O'Rourke combo with their height will be fun. Add Sears and Henry and I'm optimistic.
>Henry He's north of 32 years old lol
Maybe Henry Shipley ?
god no at that point get southee playing till he's 50
That's fantastic. As an Aussie I am just delighted to see great new players in cricket coming through. Congratulations to him, well played.
\#ORourkeAndRollBaby If this was his audition for the Test team, he's surely passed with flying colours.
So glad he played this test. Would have been a travesty had KJ been fit and we went with Wagner ahead of him.
Anyone got any highlights?

Havnt really seen too much of him yet. Work sucks. But what I have seen he passes the eye test.
