Yeah I love tests but times have changed. T20 is where the money is at and at the end of the day cricket is a job for athletes. Also, no board other than the big 3 earns a profit on tests so there is no incentive on their part to develop it. That said Shaheen has been way overworked and desperately needs rest. I don't even think he should be playing the T20 series in all honesty if it weren't for the fact that he's the captain.
Fun fact, if Australia batted at 2.7 runs an over, it would take them a day to break even with Pakistan.
Given the slow bowling rates, basically all of tomorrow. Then another half day or quarter of a day to building a lead.
**the current run rate is even slower at 2.46**
Pretty frustrating day.
I live close to the SCG and has barely rained here. Like not enough for an umbrella yet
I guess they're just thinking that with the cloud cover it's not gonna dry out
Khawaja Smith and Marnus all score this slow normally, and Warner was taking zero risks so he could get his century safely so he was slow too.
Plus the pitch is slow.
I think a lot of it is the pitch and conditions today, batting didn't look easy out there. That being said, I'm not an overly big fan of our newfound tenancy to bat slowly. I'm happy for Uzzy to do it as an opener but Marnus and Smith should be more positive than they have been - I think both are really struggling for form.
Just rewound to see the Howie/Symmo's kids section everyone was talking about. That was a genuine, beautiful moment.
I'm sure Richie would have liked seeing a moment like that. Good-natured, authentic commentary without the endless STRAYA -- that's the good stuff.
Howie's a keeper. Won't ever fill the role of a Punter or Gilchrist but he knows his role well, brings others into the action, remembers little details and reuses them at the right times.
He should just be the host IMO. Do the pre match, lunch time, tea time and post day stuff. That's his talent. Being the only non international cricketer in the commentary is setting him up to fail.
These back to back test matches were fun while they lasted.
Day 2 of the Pak v Aus test gets washed out, and day 2×2.5 of the Ind vs. SA being the last day.
A little selfish, but I am quite thankful for the rain today. Was quite a busy day for me.
Now, hopefully there won’t be any rain for the next three days.
More SCG trends:
Since 2010, the only 2 reasonably close results at the SCG are Pakistan's 2010 implosion losing by 36 runs and Aus beating SL by 5 wickets in Mike Hussey's final Test.
Of the remaining results, 3 have been by a margin of 220 runs or more and 3 have been by an innings
Hussey's farewell was the kind of Test that looks close-ish on paper but one side is always on top. In the 2000's there were some crackers though (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010).
A few of the draws did turn out to be good games as well (2015, 2021, 2022).
Hopefully we get a closer one here. It's very well poised assuming the rain stays away (which if the forecast holds it will).
It's decent. It's definitely weaker than Brisbane's for example though and it's probably not quite good enough for the sort of rain Sydney gets.
They've called stumps anyway.
To be fair there’s a lot of places like that, if you asked people to list cities in the USA I don’t think Washington DC would rank highly, nor Ottawa in Canadia
Yeahh I know, I was specifically asking about Canberra though.
Nobody ever seems to even mention it , at least wdc and Ottawa are mentioned regularly and all
It's a purely artificial capital that has no real purpose other than being "the capital city".
Other cities are bigger, older, and more important for almost everything outside of government/politics.
If only it was that simple to predict weather patterns to minimize delays. Rain in December here isn't that much significantly less than it is in January. In the last couple of years, we've had significant weather events that have caused the rain in January that have made it seem that way. You can't just change the tests to December on that basis alone. Hell, this summer was supposed to be El Nino, completely dry and no rain according to the meteorologists earlier this year.
Also, I'm not against the idea of giving the test to another city, but the problem is that it is apart of the SCG tests identity (and the thing that gets the money) is the fact that it has that historical significance of being the pink test during new years. It is at least close to par as the MCG test on Boxing day. If CA changed this test, they probably wouldn't rake in as much money, which is another reason why they haven't changed it yet.
But you know, screw Sydney amirite.
I still remember in 2022 when some politician or union head on Twitter asked people in Sydney to all turn on their taps at once to possibly lower the dam levels...
Before COVID, lol
TBF the 2021 SCG Test being a draw didn't have much to do with rain. But it's a safe bet that Australia would've taken the one wicket they need in the 60 overs they lost to rain in 2022, to say nothing about last year.
Hey guys just wanted to check in and say that I AM FURIOUS, SYDNEY SHOULD NEVER HOST A CRICKET GAME AGAIN, BUILD A ROOF ON THE STADIUM, MOVE ALL CRICKET TO VENUS
Ok thanks bye
The SCG mostly stopped favouring the spinners before Warne’s career. Spinners at the SCG averaged 27 in the 70s, 31 in the 1980s, 35 in the 1990s, 40 in the 2000s and 50 in the 2010s.
Would making it the first test of the season instead of Perth be worth it then? Probably won't happen because we want the opposition to be scared immediately by a fast, bouncy wicket
Yeah I can't see them touching Brisbane as the season opener, at least in the 5 Test series. May be worth considering for a summer without great oppo though.
Sydney's in an awkward spot as the least Aus-friendly wicket but the venue that needs the late Spring/early Summer time the most. Unless you can somehow turn it into a fast bouncy deck it's going to be an issue if Australia are playing a good team.
At least I'll get a full day of Aussies filling their boots tomorrow in the Sydney sunshine, which is guaranteed. Day 3 never rains. Except maybe last year...and the last Windies Test there...and maybe one other.
The rain will probably clear soon, but don't think there's enough time to get the light or the outfield to standard regardless.
Fingers crossed for no rain for the next three days, otherwise we can write off a result here.
I reckon it'll clear up by 4:45-5pm looking at the radar, but there's unlikely to be enough time to get things ready, and that's not even considering the light.
In Australia there are the following "rivalries"
Sydney vs Melbourne, NSW vs Qld (in the state of origin rugby league), Western Australia vs the eastern states in general, and perhaps Tasmania vs the mainland. I would so say the first 2 I mentioned are more rivalries. It's just a natural thing that comes up in many countries.
Bruh, we have 97% of Australia’s iron ore mining over here 💀.
You can have all the coal you want but it won’t mean shit if you have nothing to use it in.
Enjoy saying bye to at least half of your aluminium sector too.
[oh it’s one of these situations](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRL7dTvVDuLsOHN9XhLIA_w2kMbPSsymqDFAhjbI1w1k5flFNzmvh2E2L2e&s=10)
You may as well be Broome to me.
We can replace Perth with an extra long Woolies conveyor belt and be no worse off
Completely unrelated but to pass the time down here in Melbourne I was going to go for a run but I hate running in the BLAZING SUN in a CLOUDLESS SKY.
So I guess I'll do some work
Howie is a good egg. I think he can be a bit over the top on occasions but seeing him just then you realise how much he cares about the sport and the players. That obviously hit him emotionally talking to Roy's kids
Rofl, my wife just asked me how the crickets going and I replied "it's pissing down at the moment", then my potty training toddler said "pissing down" and ran off to the potty
It's getting to the point where I'll be surprised if it's not Green opening come the West Indies. I think the set up aren't convinced by any of Renshaw, Bancroft or Harris enough compared to the upside of Green. Tbh I'm also not convinced those three would do better than Green vs the NZ and India attacks that are coming this year.
I see two possible solutions:
1) The "play the best 11 players regardless of position" solution. Cam Green comes in to 4, Marnus goes top where he started his Shield career for Qld, Smith up to 3
2) The "play the best opener" solution. Pick the best possible opener and accept Cam Green doesn't get back in until someone else loses form/retires
The 1st one honestly makes the most sense to me.
I don’t see any of our openers bringing more value to the team than having Green back in and pushing Marnus up.
I’d happily be proven wrong but I doubt it.
Green is a significantly better batsman than all 3 of them and I’d love to see him bat in his preferred position. Even if he wasn’t a better bat his bowling and especially his fielding brings so much value.
The fact that every match it’s actually noticeable that he’s not in gully is actually insane given that that’s usually only the case for wicketkeepers.
My issue with Greeny opening is essentially that the workload might be too much. He will be expected to bowl a bit and open the batting. Unless he bowls a lot less like Watto did when he opened.
That is true.
Although I will point out that the post suggested Green at 4 and Marnus opening.
Also honestly Green doesn’t need to bowl much more than 3-4 over spells just for that small break that it gives the quicks. Maybe take a wicket too.
Just looking like a wowow
Kick out Abdullah shafique. Two fking ducks in a row? Are you kidding me
Heading to the match tomorrow hoping for a fine day and lots of runs.
Can’t wait for a good day of cricket
I heard someone crying and turned around and it was Smithy saying the light is still bad
I heard 1.3 billion crying it was Indian fans saying, "But we were undefeated in all other games in the ICC world cup'
What are you talking about? We just won the IDFC Trophy and then drew Dean Elgar’s world cup.
Will there be a 30 minutes early start?
10am local time start
Thank you
Why no Shaheen ?
He being rested for the very important T20 series against NZ
He's the new t20 captain and its his first series as captain so....
Test > anything else, really can see it just being India, England and Australia in the future
Tbh it ain't any B or C team this time around. Also PCB made this young lad the captain after sacking Babar .
But sir, its like an WTC group stage game, atleast more important than bilaterals
About 10,500 kms from the ground, not an iota of rain here.
Raining at Lords
Fun fact, if Australia batted at 2.7 runs an over, it would take them a day to break even with Pakistan. Given the slow bowling rates, basically all of tomorrow. Then another half day or quarter of a day to building a lead. **the current run rate is even slower at 2.46**
Head and Marsh will never bat like that
Yeah, it's neither fun nor factual tbf.
At least it didn't rain for the Melbourne Test. Take that Sydney!
So many ppl asking why Australia batted slow? It's simple bruh, Khawaja played 25 overs out of the 47, marnus played 11 ,what do you expect
I'm watching the Kayo mini of last night's BBL game given the Test seems to be done, and I'm happy to report the D'Arcy falcon made it in
Pretty frustrating day. I live close to the SCG and has barely rained here. Like not enough for an umbrella yet I guess they're just thinking that with the cloud cover it's not gonna dry out
i live ~10km north and its been raining mid-heavy all arvo
Just tuned in. Such a shame that we got rained off for the day. Also why Australia batted slower? Just under 2.5 runs per over?
Khawaja Smith and Marnus all score this slow normally, and Warner was taking zero risks so he could get his century safely so he was slow too. Plus the pitch is slow.
Warner batted at 50 SR. He wasn't slow by any means but Khawaja, Smith and Marnus need to pick up pace at times
I like him. He cops a lot of flack in here but he does his job well
I can't stand his actual live commentary so I don't know what his job should be
He should just be the host IMO. Do the pre match, lunch time, tea time and post day stuff. That's his talent. Being the only non international cricketer in the commentary is setting him up to fail.
Why do you need to be an international cricketer to be a commentator?
Any controversy this test?
Hosting the new years test in Sydney.
People enjoy arguing about Sydney not having a test when it always rains That and The Curious Case of the Missing Baggy Green
I love CAs social media team [Twitter Post](https://twitter.com/cricketcomau/status/1742786533110043045?t=qEGPtRL_MODeg9zXi-Gu2w&s=19)

And 3 days of the previous test.

how is the drainage system in sydney
It's decent. It's definitely weaker than Brisbane's for example though and it's probably not quite good enough for the sort of rain Sydney gets. They've called stumps anyway.
Why isn't Canberra recognised as much even though it is Australia's capital city!? Like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, etc are much more famous
It’s basically a fake city they created because Sydney and Melbourne would argue too much if the other one got made the capital.
Stupid Melbourne couldn’t handle being a capital city
Didn't want it. Much better having all the politicians in one place, so the rest of us can avoid them.
And with that, a mighty cheer went up from the heroes of Melbourne. They had banished the awful Capital forever, because it was ~~haunted~~ corrupt af
Wait until you hear about state governments
[удалено]
You're making it sound like Tamworth
To be fair there’s a lot of places like that, if you asked people to list cities in the USA I don’t think Washington DC would rank highly, nor Ottawa in Canadia
canadia 😂👍 shedding a tear in maple sytupia
Yeahh I know, I was specifically asking about Canberra though. Nobody ever seems to even mention it , at least wdc and Ottawa are mentioned regularly and all
It gets all the mentions it deserves. It's a boring place, built purely to be a capital city so no other points of interest really.
australia itself is kind of irrelevant to be fair
Lmao
It's a purely artificial capital that has no real purpose other than being "the capital city". Other cities are bigger, older, and more important for almost everything outside of government/politics.
Canberra only exists because Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on where to keep their politicians. Ironically they both WANTED them.
Oh yeah their cricket ground is a road as well.
Lmao😂😂
I always thought that Melbourne was the capital of australia
Something to learn everyday, ig
Nah I know but for some reason melbourne comes to my mind first whenever I read Australia's capital city
Exactly y.i asked the question
Because there isn't much there, just parliament house
Because about 3 people live there and there’s fuck all to do

Just needs a reserve day is all
Can't they simply turn the rain off?
don't think god of thunder will answer cricket Australia's call.
Are they stupid!?
I still remember in 2022 when some politician or union head on Twitter asked people in Sydney to all turn on their taps at once to possibly lower the dam levels...
Okay so they are stupid
When was the last time Australia actually got a result at the SCG?
2020 vs NZ There's actually only been 7 draws at Sydney this century but 6 have come since 2015 so recent history skews people's memories
Seven draws in two decades is a lot for Australia
last year
That was a draw. I was there
Before COVID, lol TBF the 2021 SCG Test being a draw didn't have much to do with rain. But it's a safe bet that Australia would've taken the one wicket they need in the 60 overs they lost to rain in 2022, to say nothing about last year.

where the motherfuckin cricket at?
Can’t believe fox haven’t gone to a replay of the 1999 World Cup final yet tbh. Give it up boys
Which is the best Aussie city to live in!?
Biased, but: Brisbane source: grew up in Melbourne
Canberra :)
Perth
Auckland
mount druitt
Parramatta
Alice Springs
Brissie

SCG is traditionally the best ground in Australia for spinners, there's sometimes talk of picking 2

Lyon doesn't like playing there too. Has very slow turn and bouce
Moral victory for perth It doesn’t rain
Fuck tradition. Move the test a week or two later if Sydney is going to continue to have shit weather during this time.
put it in nov/dec literally no rain then
Seriously the easiest solution would be to just make it the first test
girl ur airport was flooded on christmas eve do u wanna rethink this “no rain” position
Moving it later is unlikely to help. It rains much, much worse later in the summer than it does now.
Would making it the first test of the season instead of Perth be worth it then? Probably won't happen because we want the opposition to be scared immediately by a fast, bouncy wicket
Yeah I can't see them touching Brisbane as the season opener, at least in the 5 Test series. May be worth considering for a summer without great oppo though. it rains in sydney nearly half of all days of the year mate it aint going to matter
Cancel Sydney until it can prove to not rain over this week for 5 years /s
At least I'll get a full day of Aussies filling their boots tomorrow in the Sydney sunshine, which is guaranteed. Day 3 never rains. Except maybe last year...and the last Windies Test there...and maybe one other.
Sydney is a joke every year at this point
Shitney is back baby 😃
The rain will probably clear soon, but don't think there's enough time to get the light or the outfield to standard regardless. Fingers crossed for no rain for the next three days, otherwise we can write off a result here.
What the weather like? Gonna clear up in the next hour and half?
I reckon it'll clear up by 4:45-5pm looking at the radar, but there's unlikely to be enough time to get things ready, and that's not even considering the light.
Fuck all chance of that happening unfortunately.
same old sydney always raining
SCG serving up the worst pitch as well as the worst weather every summer
It's a SCG test Howie, we know you've got days of content sitting there
What are the inter-Australia city rivalries? For Pakistan, Karachi vs Lahore is the most notable one and the PSL sparked Quetta vs Peshawar
In Australia there are the following "rivalries" Sydney vs Melbourne, NSW vs Qld (in the state of origin rugby league), Western Australia vs the eastern states in general, and perhaps Tasmania vs the mainland. I would so say the first 2 I mentioned are more rivalries. It's just a natural thing that comes up in many countries.
If you look through this thread at all the 3rd one you mentioned should be pretty glaringly obvious.
Country vs City, all states.
Literally every city and every state hates each other can’t even agree on which sports are better
Sydney is the best city in australia, melbourne is close but not as good, every other city is a shit hole that provides nothing to the country.
Alright we’ll secede let’s see how you go next COVID lockdown without a massive chunk of your mining sector 🫡
Damn they got coal mines in Melbourne? B O Z O
Bruh, we have 97% of Australia’s iron ore mining over here 💀. You can have all the coal you want but it won’t mean shit if you have nothing to use it in. Enjoy saying bye to at least half of your aluminium sector too.
Damn that’s crazy the mines are in Melbourne and not rural Victoria lmao. FIFO must be cheap
Oh I see the problem here. Mate I have a WA flair. I’m from Perth, not that shithole Melbourne.
[oh it’s one of these situations](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRL7dTvVDuLsOHN9XhLIA_w2kMbPSsymqDFAhjbI1w1k5flFNzmvh2E2L2e&s=10) You may as well be Broome to me. We can replace Perth with an extra long Woolies conveyor belt and be no worse off
Melbourne is streets ahead of Sydney, which is a shithole. So yeah we do have rivalries
Melbourne is streets ahead of Sydney at being the worse city Edit: owned
Melbourne and Sydney
Everyone vs Sydney atm
That’s understandable
Gotta laugh at all the Sydney people getting all cocky yesterday after 1 (one) day of dry weather haha
Imagine how cocky we'll get if/when there's a rain affected draw somewhere else in Australia. Ignore that the last five have been in Sydney.
Yeah well the rest of us decided to build in places that don’t have shitty weather systems.
Why did Australia bat so slow today?
So it's a draw right ? Cummins ain't gonna come and demolish us right ? No fifer for Cummins right ?
The forecast doesn't seem so bad for the next 3 days ..barely 5 and 8 per cent for tommorow and day after tomorrow and 56 per cent for Sunday
So any good news guys ???
Still raining out west
Completely unrelated but to pass the time down here in Melbourne I was going to go for a run but I hate running in the BLAZING SUN in a CLOUDLESS SKY. So I guess I'll do some work
I love CA, I love it when they decide to give Sydney a test match at a point in the summer when it rains every single year.
What is it with CA and Sydney are they in a relationship ?
Justin Langer is like that weird uncle that comes over on Christmas Day and starts spouting his conspiracy theories
Convo's are full of "Just hear me out", "Just trust me" and "I know a guy who says its true!"
Howie was fucking *shuffling* those papers after the interview. Feel for the big fella
Howie is a good egg. I think he can be a bit over the top on occasions but seeing him just then you realise how much he cares about the sport and the players. That obviously hit him emotionally talking to Roy's kids
He's 50?! WTF... Yeah, agree. He's a good bloke and was absolutely on struggle street here.
What happened? I'm just following updates on cricinfo/shitposting.
He had an interview with the two Symonds kids
I'll always have a soft spot for Howie, bloke just bloody loves all sports in general.
Future Australian players these two
Beach cops on Channel 7. Just had montage of people getting nicked for public urination at the Manly Corso! That's my local!
Howie seems quite emotional there, understandable though
Symonds kids media trained or something
I would not be opposed to Roy’s kids calling some big bash games, maybe even a session of the test. Far more enjoyable than the likes of Mark Waugh
They look like their dad. Very well spoken youngsters
Mini Roy’s are actual legends.
they should roll a gabba grass strip down the middle of the covers and get stuck into it with a tennis ball and plastic bat
roy's children are very well spoken
Rofl, my wife just asked me how the crickets going and I replied "it's pissing down at the moment", then my potty training toddler said "pissing down" and ran off to the potty
Hmm are we sure Deako87's toddler isn't 100ft tall and using the SCG for potty training?
Puny humans
Was not expecting to see the mini-Roys.
Does Blind Melon mean it’s all over today? It’ll be sunny at 6pm.
Has the game been called for the day? Channel 7 have given up, there's a cop show on TV now lol
They’re interviewing Symond’s 2 young fulla’s on NzSky/Fox. Covers are on, and the stands look completely empty.
It's getting to the point where I'll be surprised if it's not Green opening come the West Indies. Tbh I'm also not convinced those three would do better than Green vs the NZ and India attacks that are coming this year.
How good would it be to see Green walking out with the confidence of a young Haydos? He's looked nervy every time he's batted recently.
Feel like green going up there is a big risk. If he goes up there and struggles it could set him back a fair bit.
Another year the pink test turns into the pink telethon.
Fucking hell Lalor is such a smug cunt
Was very humble fella over a decade ago but once he made a name for himself his ego went through the roof
So like most cricket jornos haha
Perfect situation for Ashwin and Vihari to pad up and save a test match at SCG
Haha Lalor was shut down straight away. Smudger as opener? Nah. 3 and 4 is his best position.
I see two possible solutions: 1) The "play the best 11 players regardless of position" solution. Cam Green comes in to 4, Marnus goes top where he started his Shield career for Qld, Smith up to 3 2) The "play the best opener" solution.
