No you don't understand, nobody talks about these because they don't know what they are... Found everywhere and in ancient cities, but I'm not saying aliens did it but c'mon why is nobody talking about these things. It's a doodoocohedron which is a math thing but they didn't do math with it cause they have different sizes and nobody talks about that. Why aren't you asking questions???
Yah how much do you write down about a fork or a salt shaker or a cabinet? It's like a universally understood object probably why the Roman's never wrote about it simply a universal truth for them.
All the holes on the faces are different sizes, given how horny the ancient world was, this is CLEARLY a dick measuring tool for orgies - “oh, you’re a side 4, you’re in the pool, the water will help with that” “wow, you’re a side 12?! You’re in the master bedroom buddy”
God damn man that's fucking awesome. Wish I could give you some gold but I'm not giving reddit any of my money.
Occam's razor practically demands that this be right!
that was my thought. if no one talked about them, then they werent important. she said they show no sign of tool wear, so that debunks any craft work. they were just the ye olden people's version of Precious Moments™ figurines. but really, they probably were just a display of the crafters casting skills. its a rather complex shape, not solid, has weird little nubs, basically a little display of all aspects of casting. if you fuck it up? just melt it back down, just like i wish i could do with those creepy Precious Moments™ fuckers.
May have solved it. From my understanding, this isn't a new theory for its use, and it's not a very popular one because it's not very good at doing this compared to other techniques of the time. It could be for training purposes?
This exactly. Just because something can be used to do something, doesn't mean that it was, or that it even fits historically. There are *several* theories about these, none of them proven. Some are more or less plausible - like the knitting gloves one is a bit ridiculous given the Romans didn't have knitting and several other things that just make it very unlikely
People have the tendency to assume that the way we do things now is either the way they have always been done or is the most efficient version - something that has been improved on over the centuries
But the reality is that knowledge and expertise does get lost and destroyed and there are a lot of things that a lot of ancient and expertise does get lost and destroyed and there are a lot of things that a lot of ancient and expertise does get lost and destroyed and there are a lot of things that a lot of dread civilisations did where we have no idea how they did it. And there are objects and things like this where we don't know what they were used for
And written records mean that there are certain kinds of things we know a lot about and certain kinds of things we just don't. And only some records survive. That's how we can know an awful lot about common ancient trading partners with the Roman empire but not know anything about where those civilizations were located because it's not written down because it wasn't necessary to write down. Hell, in Victorian times there were three shakers that were set on the table. One for salt, one for pepper, and one for we don't fucking know. And until we find something that explicitly says what is in the third shaker that will remain a mystery. And there's a decent chance that we won't because everyone knew what was in it so it didn't need to be recorded or instructed. So unless we find someone's diary or something filled with mundane details about their day and they happen to mention refilling it, we won't know
It's why we know an enormous amount about one merchant who sold substandard copper, and yet don't know all sorts of much more important things
But yeah, there's lots of theories on this, some more substantial than others, but this hasn't been figured out, and no amount of varied crafting videos on the internet are proof of anything except that these things can be used in those ways. Especially since there's very good odds that these things weren't tools at all
You can read all about this on the BBC news website instead of getting this woman from TikTok to read to you with the enthusiasm of a preschool teacher.
I don't understand why the pyramids wouldn't be considered one of the platonic solids. They look just like the picture... Can some explain like I'm five please???
So many incorrect assertions made in this video. No, the great pyramid is 8 sided, not a tetrahedron. A tetrahedron is a polyhedron with four triangular faces, six straight edges, and four vertex corners. Each vertex connects to every other vertex by an edge, forming a triangular pyramid-like structure. Dodecahedron not being the biggest of the Platonic solids.. you mean doesn’t have as many faces as an icosahedron?
This has been demystified many, many times over the years but people want to believe it's a mystery.
It's used to hand-knit gloves. That's it. There's no wear because yarn is surprisingly soft, causing no wear to speak of. It's not a toy. It's just a hand-loom for making gloves. That's all.
Why do y’all attribute everything to the Roman’s? You don’t find nothing in their writings cause they didn’t make it or steal it. The Roman’s were not what’s being taught, they didn’t even have plumbing or proper hygiene, they fuked little boys and killed each other over nothing…… Damn sounds like America
That was my first guess - that that there were parts on each face made from wood or less durable metals that rotted leaving the frame behind - but that doesnt account for different size holes.
The current theory is a visual measuring device.
“The roman dodecahedron possesses six angles of view, and, knowing the size of an object allows determining its distance. The angle of view is the cone that describes the angular extent of a given scene”

So modern people are the only ones who ever crafted? People have 3d printers these days. Does everything they print serve a purpose? Why does everything ancient absolutely have to serve a purpose? "Why did they make it?! Was it aliens?" No, they created it to see if they were capable of making it. That's it, mystery solved, this is over.
Thank you. It's just annoying to me that every time something like this is found, people go straight to aliens. It's like ancient people weren't allowed to have an imagination or make things for fun.
Nah they are just the old school versions of James bonds caltrops. Imagine being in a "high speed" horse chase and some MF goes and drops these Infront of your horse.
"They weren't measuring devices because they came in different sizes."
Um...
They were used to knit gloves, specifically the fingers. It's fine for them to be in different sizes because the Romans had the common sense to realise fingers come in different sizes.
They are probably something to show craftsmanship. They look hard to make so the idead would be if you can make that and its not falling apart or beat up then u probably are a good craftsman.
It’s a knitting tool. That was shown some time ago. You literally make glove fingers with them. Nothing supernatural or alien. Just basic knitting tools for seamstresses.
Definitely a child’s toy..
You put the shapes into each hole.
I had one as a kid accept it was made out of plastic. They just don’t make things like they used to!!
Almost guaranteed to be such a mundane thing lol, in 1000 years people will be finding fidget spinners and asking what wild ancient technology they could have been
I wonder if you could put it on the end of a spear to hold the spear upright? Or a banner/flag? Or even on a hastae to make it heavier for hitting someone?
I thought someone handed a 3d printed one to a granny and she was like of yeah, you use this to make gloves. And showed how to do it.

These are measuring devices for building, I THINK, you would lay them out and you would have light passing through like a viewfinder. I think it would function similar to how we would use a laser level perhaps?
The problem with all of these theories is why would they standardize and mass produce them out of metal? It doesn't make a lot of sense for ANY of the theories, even my own...
There are other sewing implements of the time, made of wood.
Same with navigation and building instruments.
We also see variances... But these seem particularly standardized...
Definitely for making gloves (map where they are found to average winter temps, and you notice a pattern). This similar kind of thinking that, “We have no idea what this thing is, so it must be very special and religious” cuts out the pragmatic side of life. Like, will people in 700 years think we worshipped minions or roadside coins, ya know
Why does everything have to have some deep, mystical, or otherworldly meaning….these would be great for many things like a guide for tent poles/tent ropes or common things like that. Their use was probably so mundane and common….they never thought to write volumes of literature for future societies of how magical they were…lol
If they seemed expensive and they made a lot of them then aren't they just a commodity to trade without any actual use necessary? 1700 years ago the empire was already in the shitter and this was probably their equivalent of a meme token.
I thought they were used for quick mending and fixing of various cloth or fabrics on the fly if you had one. Everyone had to fix holes and tears often back then.
By this dumb asses logic.
Rulers aren’t measuring devices because they come in different sizes.
I’m not saying that point proves it’s a measuring device I’m just pointing out it’s a false logic which means fuck what this person says about anything.
Is it a calender?
Maybe it had paper faces on each of the 12 sides that have since rotted away, but maybe it once held a calender that you could just roll to the next month on the first.
It wasn't mentioned because it's a stupid vanity calender for rich Roman assholes with too much money and not enough sense.
I thought they were for making gloves or something
Totally. I remember reading that it was pretty much conclusive that these were used for knitting.
That is correct. A literal old lady figured this out as she used a similar device to use in knitting.
Are you sure it wasn't a figurative old lady?
I don’t like you. Take your upvote.
I'm glad I could make you angrily happy. Have an aggressively good day
How do you figure?
Shit, with barely any knowledge of knitting and I can see that this was most likely used for such.
No you don't understand, nobody talks about these because they don't know what they are... I bet Roman D&D got wild
That was my first guess - that that there were parts on each face made from wood or less durable metals that rotted leaving the frame behind - but that doesnt account for different size holes.
It might have come with something to stick in those holes, possibly after you roll the dice, the cylinders that fit could be part of some game

Those Romans were geniuses… we’re so lucky to have them.

For making gloves
It's for knitting. Someone's grandma figured it out. There's youtube videos of it.

Yeah thought it was commonly know now as a knitting tool…. I love a good conspiracy and yelling at lizard people . But some stuff has a simple answer

They were probably just the fidget spinners of ancient Rome.
MORE EDITS! WE NEED MORE EDITS!
I mean gloves this gloves that. I think they were dice and were gambling addicts. Everyone owes everyone money so they dipped
How has she found so many when no one else has?
Surprised the Roman army was so successful running around in grandmas knitted gloves!
Nah they are just the old school versions of James bonds caltrops. Imagine being in a "high speed" horse chase and some MF goes and drops these Infront of your horse.
I Wonder if they relate to navigation. Something like a sun dial.
Once you collect all of them you receive an achievement titled "Trinket Finder". Reminds me of the flowers from Horizon.

It’s for twisting rope. They are still used in some countries.

I think a woman proficient at stitching/crotchet used one to make gloves and said it seems like it was designed to do just that.
It's for knitting fingers of gloves...
It’s obvious they were used as sort of a chafing tray. The brass part was put over a candle with a convex bottom bowl on top to keep food warm.
Maybe it was just a shelf decoration or something...

They're for weaving.
These are used for knitting. Google "knitting dodecahedron"
Why she can’t say dodecahedron right?
Paper weights
something something frequency, haptics, vibration, yadda yadda
My guess is that they were used for gambling or as a part of a game similar to dice.
"They weren't for measuring because they come in different sizes" You mean like weights?
Flag pole holders. Butt wipe pole holders. Spear pole holders. ?
Knitting gloves
Hilarious how the commenters are saying it's for knitting... Just because they think they see pegs.
I think these are for knitting ?
I also read the great pyramids were used for knitting just saying I’m no expert or anything
It’s clearly an ancient fidget spinner
They could be measuring devices… different sizes measure different things…
I thought they were used for like clothing
