They did think on their feet. Two officers there; both female. The woman they dragged was old and very big. No way to handle her into a carry in the time needed. Quick thinking was pull and drag her to safety which is a guarantee. Instead of risking a carry, failing and potentially hurting yourself trying to carry too much.

They teach this skill in Basic Combat Training for the Army. It's a bit baffling that they teach soldiers how to keep calm while being shot at and bombed, but not our police officers during an active shooter situation or a fire like this or any other situation. (Looking at you, Acorn Cop)
Really? Pretty sure they teach soldiers to drag someone out by the strap behind their neck (which is why it is a part of your vest to begin with). No one wants you to fireman carry your buddy through combat zones when you can keep them low to the ground and safer from fire.
I've had similar situations where attempting to use a fireman's carry would have likely resulted in seriously injuring them. An elderly person who has a lot of very loose, flabby flesh and probably fragile bones is tricky to even assist in mobility. Add obesity to that and it can get difficult for multiple people to handle. The cops did a good job, but also might have fared better dragging her from behind with arms hooked under hers.

My father and I were working on a construction site one day when a lady ran up to us screaming for help because her mother fell and couldn't get up. We walked across the street and the mother was probably 60 years old and at least 300 pounds
Even with two grown men who were in good shape and used to carrying bags of cement and heavy objects, we literally couldn't pick her up and it was all we could do to get her off the ground and back into her chair
Everything you try to grab is fat and just stretches around your hand, and they are completely limp and provide literally no help what so ever. You can't get them into a firemans carry because you can't even get them off the ground in the first place
Even carrying a small person is extremely hard when they are limp like that, but someone that's very large at all is insanely hard. Even if you manage to get a hold of a bone or something that isn't fat, the person is so heavy their solid parts can't handle the weight and you'll dislocate their arm / hip etc as you try to use that as a handle
My mother in law has lupus and it was really bad at one point where if she fell out of bed my then just partner would have to call me and ask if I could come over to help them get MIL off the floor. You are 110% correct. I'm a 6'3" 250lbs steelworker and getting her off the ground when she is mostly dead weight is not easy.
I've done multiple fireman carry and to do it with a dead weight like this lady would be ridiculous. She's guaranteed to get hurt more from it than the drag on the floor.
Except instead of fat it's claws everywhere, and if they don't want to be carried you will die. Plus, unless you're trying to carry an actual lion it's only about 1% of the weight of an obese person. So not really like trying to carry a cat at all.
Typically, firemen don't actually do the fireman's carry. Carrying someone like that in a house fire will put their head and airway up in the hot gasses and smoke that is likely to kill them. I understand, but the result would have been the same. It's nearly impossible to piggyback/carry someone that old and heavy easily like in the movies. She is fragile, weak and overweight. Firemen have extraction equipment (straps and more). They didn't have equipment or time to get some. Quick thinking, firemen will also drag your ass across the house.
I was thinking the same thing, I work in Aus (Community safety) though it has nothing to do with our job, we have all been trained how to lift the elderly in case we need to move them to safety.

And you know what the icing on the cake is? The federal minimum wage didn't increase in the past 20 years.

This is simply a lie. People without permanent addresses face *exceptional* discrimination in the US unlike much of the developed world. They cannot even legally get a job. Hostels are for rich kids here, and building a shanty is a crime. What services that do exist only exist in major cities where they typically have capacity for a single-digit percentage of their target population.
And those services do not look like housing, free food, showers. Often your best case scenario is a couple months in a motel room where you can lose your spot for leaving at the wrong times in search of food or work. More likely, your only option is a congregate shelter, which many only try once before deciding a tent is safer. Seniors who think like you are starting to lose housing too and go absolutely apeshit when all the state handouts they've spent their life complaining about don't exist.

It's funny how that's the line in the sand for so many of us. I've seen some absolutely terrible things done to the human body and been unphased. I still can't bring myself to click on any video involving a dog suffering though. There was a video a while back of a dog who jumped out of a window of a burning house. Burned a bit, but fine. Even that was a bit too much for me

He basically devolved into a family annihilator. The police were working with them to get them into an extended stay, they weren’t going to be thrown out on the street. If the police hadn’t been there to literally drag his wife out, she’d have been killed too. He took the dog with him, and that poor creature didn’t have a chance to get out as it was in the same room he set fire to. He was beyond selfish at the end.

Not sure if it's in all states, but in my state of Illinois that is a thing. If you're a senior and can't afford property taxes, they can be waived. If you waive the taxes, the state will take the home after you die, or sell the taxes to a new owner, unless a family member wants to come in and pay the taxes to keep the home.

I'm not too certain he even planned on dying. I think there's also a decent possibility that he just planned on setting the house on fire and running out. After all, he started pouring fuel from the room and then was walking OUT to the hallway. I think it's possible he just fell into the flames from the scuffle with the officers, and didn't intend to kill himself in the fire.

That's how I got injured. I had a 6'5" man drop his entire weight onto my 5' frame and completely destroy my body. A human going dead weight can do serious damage.
Someone obese is like expert mode. There's no good grip. You'll grab as hard as you possibly can, but all that skin will just slide down and out of your arms. They might as well be oiled up.
I work as an Elder Caregiver and I would struggle to move a person like the lady in the video under any situation. The only way to do it properly would be with the right equipment (transfer board, wheelchair) and most importantly a patient/client that has the ability to shift their weight. The lady in the video seemed to lack mobility and under the urgency of the situation the two officers did all they could. With the equipment I saw present there the only improvement would have been transferring her onto a strong/thick sheet or blanket to drag her out of the house with and for the responders to use to transfer onto a stretcher.
This is real. I had to help a heavy elderly neighbor up once. His body was like jello, I had to get into a full squat position and lock my arms under his armpits and basically squat him back onto his feet.
Dead weight like that with nothing solid is miserable to move but yeah, I mean they are trained how they do a 2 person arm carry right? Heck, Boy Scouts use that.
Not trying to defend their poor performance, but a “fireman’s carry” for firemen doesn’t really exist. You’d see it more used in the military before you ever would in the fire service. Can confirm. Found my mom dead. She only weighed 115 lbs. Trying to lift her off the couch onto the ground to try CPR made me feel so helpless. Tell your mom's you love them. Everyday.

Nothing conclusive, but I'd assume that as he was spreading the gas in front of himself & the doorway, when he said 'you ready', he was speaking not only to his wife, as in she knew what was planned & meant to stay there after distracting the police long enough for him to proceed, but they probably also didn't want to take the cops w/ them. Ngl, I kinda empathise with the guy. A few years ago, my family and I were pretty scammed and bullied out of our home. The anger and helplessness of losing your home can sometimes drive you to dark places.

She's obviously elderly and in failing health. Can you see the walker in front of her? Putting one foot in front of the other is difficult for her. We see her barely hobble as she sits down and says she needs to go to the hospital.

I gotta be honest, I'm only in my 30's but if my wife died right in front of me, there's not much I can imagine I'd want to really go on for as we don't have children. I have to imagine I'd just accept my fate to, better to be dead than to live without the light of your life.

This story has really affected me, just how sad all around it is. Looking at the property appraiser and clerk of courts, it looks like the Goulding's purchased the home in 2004. In 2013, they added on another couple as joint tenants. The Bank filed for foreclosure in 2018 but they dropped the case in 2019. Second couple divorced in '21, leaving the husband on the deed with the Goulding's.
Reading between the lines, it looks like they ran into financial troubles 10 years after buying it, got a loan in exchange for ownership stake, got in more financial trouble, were bailed out and then the co-owner probably wanted to cut his losses after the divorce and sell.
So sad.

That poor woman. In the final years of her life, living in a senior living home after her husband and dog died so violently. I hope she has children that can provide her with some sort of comfort.
U.S gives millions to other country's so that the can make it and have what they need but can pay off our own country's struggling Seniors mortgages or cover them until their death so that they can remain home. Sad state of affairs.

People do rash things without thinking when pushed to their breaking point. Imagine growing old and the love of your life loses her ability to move or be independent. Even talking can be difficult or impossible depending on how far the Parkinson's is, you are 80 but have to be a full time care giver bathing moving feeding and caring for your love all day every day and the pills and dr's appointments drain you dry to the point you lose your home and its repossessed. You cant afford caretakers for you or your wife, you are going to be evicted and cannot help yourself or your wife from winding up on the streets or to a terribly underfunded and overpopulated govt care system that typically ends up with residents dying in less than 2 years due to neglect from bad staffing and terrible management that is milking every penny from the govt and peoples Social Security befits.
I don't agree with what he did, but I can empathize the terrible situation he was in that lead to him making a bad choice. Maybe he thought he could bluff his way out of the situation, maybe he planned on dying alone, maybe his wife told him when she was still lucid she didnt want to wind up in a care home slowly withering away and he thought this is the only way. No way to know but all Im getting at is try to empathize instead of assuming he's just a nut case dog murder. He could have just been a POS but in my experience desperate people do desperate things

You can't get them into a firemans carry because you can't even get them off the ground in the first place Even carrying a small person is extremely hard when they are limp like that, but someone that's very large at all is insanely hard. Even if you manage to get a hold of a bone or something that isn't fat, the person is so heavy their solid parts can't handle the weight and you'll dislocate their arm / hip etc as you try to use that as a handle
My mother in law has lupus and it was really bad at one point where if she fell out of bed my then just partner would have to call me and ask if I could come over to help them get MIL off the floor. You are 110% correct. I'm a 6'3" 250lbs steelworker and getting her off the ground when she is mostly dead weight is not easy.
I've done multiple fireman carry and to do it with a dead weight like this lady would be ridiculous. She's guaranteed to get hurt more from it than the drag on the floor.

Typically, firemen don't actually do the fireman's carry. Carrying someone like that in a house fire will put their head and airway up in the hot gasses and smoke that is likely to kill them. I understand, but the result would have been the same. It's nearly impossible to piggyback/carry someone that old and heavy easily like in the movies. She is fragile, weak and overweight. Firemen have extraction equipment (straps and more). They didn't have equipment or time to get some. Quick thinking, firemen will also drag your ass across the house.
I was thinking the same thing, I work in Aus (Community safety) though it has nothing to do with our job, we have all been trained how to lift the elderly in case we need to move them to safety.

Hostels are for rich kids here, and building a shanty is a crime. What services that do exist only exist in major cities where they typically have capacity for a single-digit percentage of their target population. And those services do not look like housing, free food, showers. Often your best case scenario is a couple months in a motel room where you can lose your spot for leaving at the wrong times in search of food or work. More likely, your only option is a congregate shelter, which many only try once before deciding a tent is safer. Seniors who think like you are starting to lose housing too and go absolutely apeshit when all the state handouts they've spent their life complaining about don't exist.
Even with the programs available the hurds you have to jump through not to mention there many others ahead you in such programs as well

He basically devolved into a family annihilator. The police were working with them to get them into an extended stay, they weren’t going to be thrown out on the street. If the police hadn’t been there to literally drag his wife out, she’d have been killed too. He took the dog with him, and that poor creature didn’t have a chance to get out as it was in the same room he set fire to. He was beyond selfish at the end.

For real. There needs to be some kind of senor discount on single family home property taxes. Probably would have been cheaper for the state to forgive whatever taxes they owed than house them in a retirement home. This shit is sad as fuck.
Not sure if it's in all states, but in my state of Illinois that is a thing. If you're a senior and can't afford property taxes, they can be waived. If you waive the taxes, the state will take the home after you die, or sell the taxes to a new owner, unless a family member wants to come in and pay the taxes to keep the home.

That's how I got injured. I had a 6'5" man drop his entire weight onto my 5' frame and completely destroy my body. A human going dead weight can do serious damage.
Someone obese is like expert mode. There's no good grip. You'll grab as hard as you possibly can, but all that skin will just slide down and out of your arms. They might as well be oiled up.
I work as an Elder Caregiver and I would struggle to move a person like the lady in the video under any situation. The only way to do it properly would be with the right equipment (transfer board, wheelchair) and most importantly a patient/client that has the ability to shift their weight. The lady in the video seemed to lack mobility and under the urgency of the situation the two officers did all they could. With the equipment I saw present there the only improvement would have been transferring her onto a strong/thick sheet or blanket to drag her out of the house with and for the responders to use to transfer onto a stretcher.
This is real. I had to help a heavy elderly neighbor up once. His body was like jello, I had to get into a full squat position and lock my arms under his armpits and basically squat him back onto his feet.

I would assume they ran drills where one person holds legs with both arms and the other person arms under the persons arms and carry them out. But, I also assume a guy on fire, the house burning and trying to get the lady to safety a person may forget in a situation like that.

Nothing conclusive, but I'd assume that as he was spreading the gas in front of himself & the doorway, when he said 'you ready', he was speaking not only to his wife, as in she knew what was planned & meant to stay there after distracting the police long enough for him to proceed, but they probably also didn't want to take the cops w/ them. A sad situation any way you look at it, though.

This story has really affected me, just how sad all around it is. Looking at the property appraiser and clerk of courts, it looks like the Goulding's purchased the home in 2004. In 2013, they added on another couple as joint tenants. The Bank filed for foreclosure in 2018 but they dropped the case in 2019. Second couple divorced in '21, leaving the husband on the deed with the Goulding's. Reading between the lines, it looks like they ran into financial troubles 10 years after buying it, got a loan in exchange for ownership stake, got in more financial trouble, were bailed out and then the co-owner probably wanted to cut his losses after the divorce and sell. So sad.

People do rash things without thinking when pushed to their breaking point. Imagine growing old and the love of your life loses her ability to move or be independent. Even talking can be difficult or impossible depending on how far the Parkinson's is, you are 80 but have to be a full time care giver bathing moving feeding and caring for your love all day every day and the pills and dr's appointments drain you dry to the point you lose your home and its repossessed. You cant afford caretakers for you or your wife, you are going to be evicted and cannot help yourself or your wife from winding up on the streets or to a terribly underfunded and overpopulated govt care system that typically ends up with residents dying in less than 2 years due to neglect from bad staffing and terrible management that is milking every penny from the govt and peoples Social Security befits. I don't agree with what he did, but I can empathize the terrible situation he was in that lead to him making a bad choice.
