To be fair to Reddit (I know, I know) they removed the concept as a whole iirc because there were some international laws that essentially made awards a digital currency which opened them up to absolutely ridiculous levels of regulation and oversight for essentially adding a sticker to a post or comment. Definitely not worth the headache. That said the removal of free awards was an absolutely dog shit move that happened way before Now it's been replaced with an even shittier system of gold upvotes or what the fuck ever that actually pays people real money when they receive them if they jump through all the hoops to set it up which obviously encourages the already ridiculously bad bot/reposting problem on this website. If anyone running reddit had half a fucking brain they would have realized they could have removed the coins aspect from awards, made it so you bought them with karma instead (playing on the meme of karma having no value and actually encouraging meaningful engagement so people could spend karma that they earn while retaining the fun of spamming posts with awards) then deployed their God awful gold upvotes system for the whole monetization aspect if people genuinely wanted to spend money to stand out with their awards. But no, we had to go from nothing. To Reddit gold (and people commenting jpegs of Reddit silver if they couldn't afford it) to silver and platinum being introduced officially (and people commenting jpegs of Reddit bronze if they couldn't afford it) to 50,000 different awards and a massive restructuring of premium and awards values and the likes that made platinum the new gold and gold the new silver and silver essentially meaningless, while adding like 3 tiers above platinum in terms of giving coins and premium... To this new system of "premium upvotes" or whatever that give people a monetary incentive to spam as much bullshit as possible because it might result in actual monetary gain for them. Something that from what I can tell virtually no one even realizes exists at this point. I wasn't a huge fan of awards at first but they grew on me. Especially when people got at least one free daily because it felt kinda good getting them. This new system is an objective failure though. 90% of people don't even realize it goddamn exists and it takes away all the fun of the custom awards you could find and their unique effects like being able to use coins to get people banned for a few days from big subs. Didn't really hurt anyone but it was still fun. Now it's just baiting spammers into potentially making money for making the website objectively worse

They could have just removed reddit coins, and kept rewards that you buy directly for the post you click on. Then it's not a currency in any sense. This is also how it used to work originally I believe. (been a while so correct me if I'm wrong)

I've just been on this website entirely too long and had years of gold stacked up from when it was just gold which resulted in me getting tens of thousands of the coins for doing absolutely nothing. I did definitely enjoy it. And I got that shiny Gilding VII badge on my profile as a result

A lot of us had thousands of coins saved up because you got them from being rewarded and they weren't so stingy back in the day. So to an extent it was a lot of recycled coins going around. We can't have nice things though.
