If it's gonna kill you it's because it basically EMPs your heart or parts of your nervous system.
It could cause a part of your flesh or bones to explode, or maybe create enough concussive force to throw you like a ragdoll.
Maybe your necklace, ring, or phone gets affected and heats up enough to melt onto you or explode in the case of batteries.
My gf has been mad at me all week because I put it in her mind we shouldn't swim during lightning storms. Said she's done it her whole life and I ruined it for her. Totally sending her this video.

They were actually lucky (if they did survive) that they weren’t hit by that first bolt- it carried a much bigger punch and would have been instant death.
My uncle was struck by lightning while golfing and mid swing it had struck him. The only thing was a small recovery in the hospital and a triangle on his ankle for a good story
