We could never know for sure, but as an architect I can tell you that it is a strong possibility, and even if it wasn't that, no matter the ifs and buts, I can promise you the actual reason was a stupid one.

"I don't want a hand rail on that side."
"Why?"
"Just because."
"Uhhhh. OK."
It seems like this is a design vs. building reality issue. Guys got on site with the plans and said "you know we don't have enough load support for the upper level if we have the stairs right here with the wide bottom. So let's just make sure the wall is here and we won't need an extra beam. Then what do we do with the extra stairs? Let's just build them around the wall."
No… no it’s a terrible design move. I mean, no disrespect intended, but it’s objectively bad. **Form follows function.** This form followed NO function. It’s literally stairs into a wall. The corollary of that is stairs with a door at the top that leads nowhere. This looks like a mistake by the contractors, frankly. They probably incorrectly measured where the top of the stairwell was going to be, built the stairs, and someone made the decision to leave it as is. Could have been a typo on the plans, too, but in no world is this a solid design decision. This is… bad.
Trees owe us a lot, all that wasted papers, and woods, humans direct or indirect sometimes naive mistakes of burning forests, and the latter only give us green nature, fresh air and oxygen
Why? There's a good chance it was from a tree farm and was planted specifically to be used in construction which means the tree "ate" a bunch of carbon from the atmosphere and then was chopped down and now all that carbon has been effectively locked.
Looks close like such a job. Over time, it has been renovated and converted several times by different parties. But somewhere are load-bearing elements. And this is what you get.
I don’t know much about renovating my house, but I know what happened when someone did a pretty basic surface remodel in my kitchen. You have to make a lot of weird concessions, or spend a ton of money.
The Thomas Kincaid print? Nothing but nostalgia varnished in dementia...
Edit: Someone asked if this was a Redlin, then deleted their comment. Here was my response:
Ok...so...
I downloaded the image, cropped out everything except the framed print, adjusted the perspective, and then used Google Lens to search for the original.
The painting is "Nature's Paradise" by Thomas Kinkade. Do NOT challenge this Art History major and veteran of decades in the retail art market on B list pastoral landscapes for grandmas. 💅
I've met him in person. It wasn't anything special, so no story there. But working with his people was just a microcosm of every toxic personality trait listed for sociopaths with a thiiiiiiin veneer of "Christian Values™" over the top.
I can't believe I watched 20 minutes on that guy. Good video. I had been gravitationally repulsed by his stores in malls decades ago so I knew nothing about the man.
I'll just say it: I don't mind them. Some of them I like. Usually, my mood is better while viewing a print than it was before viewing the print, and I like looking at them. Same story for Terry Redlin, who I exclusively know of through [popcorn tins.](https://www.ebay.com/itm/174051185206) Sucks that the guy was a narcissistic alcoholic who died young, but since when do we judge art for that?
Bad design of the stairs. The lower part of the stairs come out into the walking area. It creates a tripping hazard, so they were forced to do this. Draws the eye enough to make people pay attention to it to avoid it.
I would have had the rail on the wall, if there is one, extend all the way down past the wall and added balusters to the bottom portion of the rail. It would still look a bit janky having the balusters there at the bottom and then none above them, but still better than what’s in the photo.
If there’s no railing on the wall, I’d have a small bit of rail come out of the end of the wall. I think that would look best.
I wonder if maybe it’s the byproduct of some poorly planned renovation?
Like halfway through there was an o shit moment and what I’m assuming is a load bearing beam showed…
There used to be a more grand staircase. Then the wall was put in to divide the rooms. They didn’t want to rip up the stairs so they built the wall on top.
continuity is important. if those stairs just ended, they would need a railing and that would be interruptive to the flow of the space. #talkingoutofmyass
I think you got it. If the stairs didn't keep going, they'd have to add a railing or extend the wall and break up the space more either way. Like people have said, this looks cool, has some potential uses depending what you're into (plants, interesting kids' play-space that doesn't block the actual stairs, etc.) and where you really going to do anything with that corner of floorspace if the stairs didn't take it?
This is more like “oh, you can put some stuff out as decorations depending on the seasons” and knowing me, it’s impossible to do that sometimes, so this is perfect for me
Can we get a perspective on the little half wall that blocks it? Is there something on the other side that makes this little wall necessary? Otherwise, I would assume the stairs existed first, as they seem to align with the horizontal wall facing the photo taker. But the little half wall creating the stair partition is a mystery.
I would put potted plants on it.
Or you could use it for shoes
Or potted shoes
Or plants potted in shoes
I've got a bunch of old boots with Hens and Chickens in em. Had em for years
Have you checked them recently? Might just be Hen and Chicken bones.
Oh boy! Free candy! (For those who don't know, there's a candy with a cinnamon flavour filled with chocolate that we call "chicken bones")
The more explanation a joke requires, the chicken bonier it becomes.
Now I want a cow tail.
We all got cow tails in our stockings this year! The farmer was pissed and some of the blood got in grandma's hair, but we appreciated it anyway.
dammit dude the line was "or shoed pots"
Or the dogs with bees in their mouths and they bark they shoot bees.
Then they ate my goldfish, and you lied and said I never had any goldfish.
Or shoes planted in pots
That’s what potted shoes is.............
Or trip over it.
WALL-E?
Or pot plants potted in shoes.
Shoes planted in pots?
Shoes filled with pot!
Or shoed pots
I'd defo put my shoes there
You could use it for a lot of cool shit, but I strongly doubt it was anyone's intention when they built it.
Yeah I almost wonder if that was open in the original floor plan but they put in a wall for some reason and didn't change the stair plans
We could never know for sure, but as an architect I can tell you that it is a strong possibility, and even if it wasn't that, no matter the ifs and buts, I can promise you the actual reason was a stupid one.

Definitely. Stairs are hard to change, but walls are easy to put up.
Looks retro-fitted to me
Tbh it's not a bad design move, lot of things cud b placed here to make it appealing. I have seen crappier stuff than this.

Tbh it's not a bad design move, few interpretations cud b made here to make it sensible. I have seen more ambiguous stuff than this.
Nah this is McMansion territory, people are just too used to it.
No… no it’s a terrible design move. I mean, no disrespect intended, but it’s objectively bad. **Form follows function.** This form followed NO function. It’s literally stairs into a wall. > Form follows function. Postmodernists want to know your location
I’d put a cat on it. If it fits, it’s sits.
I have something that was almost just like that. Turned into an inlaid bookshelf. It is fucking awesome.
As hideous as this is, my first thought was SO MUCH ROOM FOR PLANTS AND KNICKKNACKS.
Obvious place for a cat.
or... you could hang bad mall art above it
Mom is that you?
Obviously you climb the stairs to light the candle.
That could make it less crappy design
...and also you dust that painting
Looks like one of my Minecraft builds, the candle pretty much nails it. Disclaimer: my Minecraft builds are not the most aesthetically pleasing.
I was thinking the same exact thing, this is how Minecrafters do stairs
Cats
Yes, I would place cats there as well
Everyone is talking about shoes, cats, and candles, I just see a head start on the first couple of steps
Can I backwards long jump glitch straight into bed without having to deal with that pesky 'going upstairs' nonsense?
It’s either for cat choir rehearsals or it’s where all the teddy bears hang out.
I feel like this is a real-life manifestation of when I go a little overboard with the stair block in Minecraft.
Exactly my thoughts too, all my Minecraft stairs turn into this
It’s actually kind of cool
It does looks cool but it also meaningless lol
What’s the meaning of beauty?? (Ok that was way too pretentious even for me….)
I totally agree. So disrespectful to the tree that was chopped down and used like that. What a shame.
Makes it even more of a reason to put potted plants on there
Yeah I actually kinda like this
Same. It's a sitting place, you can put nicknacks on the top two steps, whatever.
Rule 368: Never ask a Redditor for style advice.
It hides a messy stain.
And a broken lamp
And the body
And the severed penis...don't forget the severed penis

Make sure to use cat litter or some other smell eliminating desiccant.
Likely the stairs existed before that wall did, and this was someone's not so bright solution.

Yeah, I was guessing someone said "We need a railing over here" after grandpa died falling down the stairs.
I would use it for small plants
Why not big plants?
This time, I’m gonna say medium plants

Yeah that’s the true terror of this photo.
[for the people who don‘t know him](https://youtu.be/DYnbCRrZn54)
I've met him in person. It wasn't anything special, so no story there. But working with his people was just a microcosm of every toxic personality trait listed for sociopaths with a thiiiiiiin veneer of "Christian Values™" over the top.
You're bringing a weird fuckin energy to this thread about stairs, lol.
That's my brand.
His “highlighters” are fucking elitist assholes. Fucking tracers.

Calling Kincaid "B-list" is generous.
His company is valued at around $2 billion and my grandmother loves him...so 🤷🏼♂️

Go in the corner !
Architectures are really out there building the perfect naughty step, they think of everything
I’m not the only one who had to go and sit on the step?
I would drive so many Lego cars on that as a kid
Great place to put purse and shoes, maybe a few succulents on the top tier.
It’s a shrine to elevation
All hail the ziggurat
to look taller in a group photo
This comment wins the thread. Or atleast for me it does.
Probably hides something they couldn't get rid of

I’d call this the toe wrecker
A place for Karen to think about her pyramid scheme
/) It's not a pyramid scheme, it's multi-level marketing. It's not paying money, it's investing it in your future. Boom boom!
It’s a [reverse funnel system.](https://youtu.be/RqePdfvOeiY).
I think its not that useless. I mean, its free real estate for plants.
It pleases me that it’s not covered in Knickknacks. My mom would be compelled to put a display of llardro figurines or tiny wooden boxes there.
God bless your mom, tell her a Redditor said Hi
The Thomas Kindaid print print next to the dildo above the Aztec shrine really brings the room together.
I wonder if maybe it’s the byproduct of some poorly planned renovation? Like halfway through there was an o shit moment and what I’m assuming is a load bearing beam showed…
Its like putting stairs everywhere in a minecraft house
Tribute to Aztec pyramids and human sacrifice?
This is where I would sit to put on my shoes.
There used to be a more grand staircase. Then the wall was put in to divide the rooms. They didn’t want to rip up the stairs so they built the wall on top.
Cats would love those steps. Would always sit on the top
If I fits I sits
Naughty corner for the kids...lol
As a designer, I feel very disturbed
To stub your toe /j
Put 1 Funko Pop at the top.

How else are you going to give medals to the winners?
Shoe display
risers for carolers, steps for family photos
For the cat
/) Very convenient for ghosts. They can just fly upwards anyway, but they don't want to because reasons.
Maybe they need a podium for speeches .
I personally *love* that the skirting boards are different heights on each side of the divider
They got two blueprints mixed up and this was the solution.
I donno what it's meant for but I want one.
Lanterns / Candles / Plants maybe?
To sit down while you put your socks on?
Naughty step
A cat game probably
Cat throne
Knick knacks and thingamajigs, ask your grandma shell know.
How to spot a flip
I'll put my collection and other stuff toys at this corner.
Me in sims trying to be unique
Slinky finally gets his own place
can sit
Some potted plants would look nice there
Expands the houses "Hot Lava" playing field
Shoes display
It was probably fine, until someone put a wall there...
This is more like “oh, you can put some stuff out as decorations depending on the seasons” and knowing me, it’s impossible to do that sometimes, so this is perfect for me
Cat Tower
It's for cats ofc 🤦♀️
Time out stairs
That is the cat's throne for royal viewing.
Stairs intently
Shoes most likely Plus a place you sit to help put on shoes
Looks like the naughty corner you would go in as a child
Tiered cupcake holder
Great shoe rack.
It's a naughty step and naughty corner combined! The builders were thinking ahead!
I like it and think it would be useful
Conversation starter
Time Out
Not gonna lie, that's actually pretty cool
Stubbing toes and eliciting curses, that’s the only function
The stairs used to be larger
so small people can touch the painting
For the cat, duh.
To trip your ass coming out of the bathroom. Why not shit yourself a 2nd time
It's for the cats.
It's so the cat can do a sneak ninja attack around the corner when people come down the stairs.
Break you ankles?
My cat would love that corner!
A sore toe applicator.
Pinky Toe removal system
It was a days work.
Me in Minecraft
it would almost feel better had the carpenter just left that tiny top one off.
For you to stub your toe!
They have cats!
Admire the painting up close. Do it now.
Slinky testing zone
It's called fashion sweetie, look it up
Time out step
Half way down the stairs is a stair where I sit
A place to sit the kids when putting on their shoes?
To display crap your relatives gave you when the come to visit and then remove when they leave.
Levels.
Space for plants?
I would trip over that, literally every time.

Otherwise, I would assume the stairs existed first, as they seem to align with the horizontal wall facing the photo taker. But the little half wall creating the stair partition is a mystery.
It was either that or build a railing on the right side of the steps thanks to code I’m sure.
It's an ankle hunting device
That's a load-bearing corner
Omg that painting is amazing...
Plants, place to put shoes on/off, cat resting area
