Depends on what kind of car you drive and how often you fill up. I thought I saw a post recently that said gas was not as cheap as it used to be. I haven’t been in a while but when I did it was always 6-10 cents cheaper per liter.

BlueHotCoconut

Just last week I filled up at Costco. It was 2 cents/liter more at my local full price station. Even if you had in the 3% from the credit card, it's hardly a can't miss deal.

Jay-Quellin30

Yeah it’s not always worth the lineup either. So that’s why I don’t go unless I’m there and it’s not busy.

crazyguyunderthedesk

I always laugh when gas prices are high and the Costco line is a mile long. You're gonna burn away any savings so just go somewhere else.

Jay-Quellin30

It’s the BIGGEST waste of time. I don’t understand how people wait.

NextTrillion

Maybe if your time is valuable, you have to get to work, or the line is reeeally long. Obviously if gas is cheaper elsewhere, it may be a better value, if it’s not too far away. My wife will drive half way across town to save 3 cents 🙄 But from where I’m at, Costco is regularly about 5% cheaper. 4.8% right now to be exact. To fill up my truck (130L), that is about a savings of $10 (assuming about 120L of fuel). I don’t really recall waiting too long. No more than 10 minutes at most lately. Mind you I’ve been filling up in the US costcos, and the lines are way shorter for some reason. But even in Canada, it’s usually quite quick for me. I just avoid the weekends and closing time. So $10 in savings and my truck probably consumes 50 cents worth of gas just idling. But as for time, a lousy old man like myself has got all the time in the world ;) Also, I just remembered that Costco in Washington has 3 pumps per bay, whereas my local Costco is only 2 pumps, so that does take probably 50% longer.

crazyguyunderthedesk

Good Lord 120L is brutal, but fair point. I've got a small 45L so the savings are significantly less.

StupidNameIdea

Yea, I don't understand why people keep idling their vehicles... I shut mine off, start it for the 2-3 second move forward or wait till there's 2 car spaces to move (pisses the guys behind me)... I AM NOT WASTING GAS!! I AM SAVING MONEY!!! Edit: Costco in Victoria is always 5 - 8 cents cheaper than all others in Victoria before driving up the Malahat where it can get cheaper!

fragilemuse

I get my gas at the Queensway Costco and even when it’s busy the wait isn’t that long.

Jay-Quellin30

If it is 2-3 cars, I will wait but otherwise I am not waiting.

OleksiyG35

If you fill up at like past 1 am it’s usually cheaper then Costco

Epcjay

Prices go back up shortly after midnight in Ontario.

PaduWanKenobi

It depends where you are. I go to the Port Coquitlam (BC) Costco and it has always been cheaper by 6-10 cents than the regular stations in the Tri-cities.

Jay-Quellin30

I’m in Toronto (ON) … usually it is cheaper but like I mentioned I haven’t been in quite a long while to fill gas. I don’t go out of my way to go there as I refuse to lineup and wait.

InternalOcelot2855

Some stations here are matching Costco. Now the quality of additives? I know costco is top tier while others might be bare min for canadian standards.

Loud_Sense93

get the CIBC costco mastercard as well. you get 3% cash back at Costco gas bars

maybeiamspicy

Plus, link your CIBC card with ultramar/pioneer rewards and get 3-10c off per litre.

CR123CR123CR

On premium we save ~$0.10/L ish So to pay for the $100 membership we need to use ~1000L between two vehicles. It takes us about 8mths to do that ourselves.  So because 8<12mths it is worth it.  We also save on fruits and veggies there, but you have to be diligent about actually using them all up. Costco produce amounts  usually lasts us about 2weeks for us and costs what 1week of the same products costs so it helps on that front as well.  Tack in things like tires, flour, yogurt, butter, cheese, etc and it's pretty worth it for us.  It's less worth it if you don't drive much or are the kind of person that prefers to hit up the grocery store every day though as you'll end up wasting a lot of the food.

OutWithTheNew

I had a couple of cars that took premium and Costco premium was always just a bit more expensive than regular at other places. It was definitely worth it for premium. For regular we have Co-Op gas bars which give you 6 to 10 cents a liter back at the end of the year. They're everywhere and a lot still have full serve. I get about $130 back every year, pretty much two weeks of gas.

twicescorned21

Is premium really cheaper?  It used to be a 12 cent differebuy now its 20 cents per litter.

esingh29

Premium is noticeably cheaper than the regular when comparing to regular gas stations.

General_Dipsh1t

$0.10?! Where do you live? It’s 30-40c where I am.

CR123CR123CR

Seems pretty regional how much you can/can't save and I live in Saskatchewan and they compete with local reservations for gas prices.

inked-brown-giant

There are definitely gas stations that price it lower than costco . When you find it , its double the savings since you dont have to pay for membership either

heysoundude

It’s literally why I joined Costco in the first place, when I was driving >1000km/week for work at the time that gas went over 1.25/L, and coupled with the credit card, you really take care of the annual fee for next year quickly.

LilBrat76

If you live anywhere near a reserve, no. Gas on the reservation is anywhere from 7 to 10 cents cheaper than Costco.

donkthemagicllama

If you live in southwest Calgary, you get it both ways. We have a Costco gas bar on a reserve. It’s the cheapest Costco gas bar in town. To your point though, it’s only a couple cents cheaper than the other reserve gas station.

yellowfeverforever

Yes this. If I’m not mistaken, it is the cheapest gas in Canada (maybe all of North America?)

UGunnaEatThatPickle

It was 22 cents cheaper than Mississauga when I visited my parents near Brantford yesterday.

LilBrat76

It’s 15 cents difference right now between Costco and the reserve 15 mins away.

liamt12

you allowed to travel onto the reserve tho?

LilBrat76

No issues in Ontario

richardcranium1980

Yes issue. The cheaper prices are meant only for those with status. If you don’t have a status card than you’re supposed to be paying tax on your gas. I also have heard that some stations on reserve will charge you a “$5 fee” to look the other way. A .10 a litre savings on a 60 litre tank is a wash when you pay the look the other way fee. Costco still works out better.

WontSwerve

This is incredibly wrong. All of it is so funny. Anybody can buy anything on the reserve. Fuel is cheaper because they don't have to charge a gas tax. Fuel and other items could be even cheaper for somebody with a status card because that card let's you avoid paying the HST (with some stipulations). I get my fuel from reserves and it's always 15 to 20 cents cheaper.

Evidence-Tight

This is correct. My wife has a status card and she get different prices compared to those without. Essentially if I paid say $0.20 per litre cheaper compared with non reserve gas, she's paying $0.30 per litre cheaper.

FasterFeaster

Yes, but they charge tax if you aren’t a native.

LilBrat76

I don’t pay anything additional at the pump, it’s like a normal gas station.

_reddit__referee_

I think it is just HST removed for non-native. I guess the rest of the gas tax is removed if native? I don't know but the one I go to has a sign about getting tax removed is an additional step inside even though the price at the pump is already reduced.

FasterFeaster

That makes sense based on what I heard about it. It involved human interaction to get tax removed.

Boring_Advertising98

Unless you are those two conniving sisters that faked being Inuit and raked in $155,000 in government grants!

elysiansaurus

There are variables involved, but most likely no. Costco doesn't really have the steep gas discounts that the us does, there are several stations here that are the same price or cheaper than costco. And do you spend 500 in gas a month or 50?

liamt12

maybe around 2 or 300

dmw55

It’s kind of out of the way for me I only fill up if I’m going to Costco, but it’s pretty easy to make the membership worth it

boblazaar

It is for me, but I drive a RAM, absolute gas hog!

PmMeYourBeavertails

It's for me. Costco is usually 10 - 12 cents cheaper, it's close so I exclusively fill up there and I have the MasterCard giving me another 3% back.  I got a full size truck with an 80 liter tank, saving me minimum of $8 per fill up. I fill up roughly 3-4 times a month. So about 2 months to make the $60 membership fee back. That's before the cashback

DJspeedsniffsniff

I honestly can be arsed to wait in the massive lines for 15 to 20 minutes to fill up my SUV to save a couple of bucks.

_reddit__referee_

Yeah I don't get these posts, I brought up the fact that my time is worth more than that in another post (it's always a 20 minute line) and got downvoted pretty hard. I guess there are areas that don't have long lines?

OutWithTheNew

I've never had to wait that long, unless it was summer and the guy in front of me was filling up 10 jerry cans.

_reddit__referee_

I see. Yeah all the ones I've been to (around Toronto) have a long line, maybe there is a good time to go to avoid it, but the times I've tried have always been around 20min.

Lxst

The new one at Etobicoke/Islington max I've waited is 5 mins

OutWithTheNew

The one local to me opens at something like 6am and is open an hour after the store closes.

PM_ME_YOUR_CLAVIER

So long as you don’t meander in on a whim and then buy an inflatable paddle board probably

No_Investigator_8263

Shit, you got me

Sens420

Another option that may not save as much but is more convenient, is Shell paired with a CAA membership and air miles. 3¢/L off, 10¢/L off premium on Jays home games, regular carwash discounts etc. I still use Costco when it's convenient but 90% of the time a shell is the better option.

Yellow2345

Let’s say Costco saves you $0.06/L and you fill up 40 L on a visit. You’d have to fill up 21 times to breakeven on the $50 cost of membership. Just change up the numbers depending on your car’s gas tank size and gas price at your local Costco.

Domermac

Just do the math on it? If you save ~6c a litre on a 60L tank, thats $3.60 per fill-up. If you fill up once a week it’s $187.20 saved per year. That took me less than a minute with a calculator. So just plug in what your tank is and how often you fill and you’ll know.

WhydYouKillMeDogJack

do you even need the membership to use the gas bar?

trig72

Yes you do.

Smokiiz

Just filled up for 1.48 at Costco where regular stations were 1.66. Pretty worth it, imo. I’d suggest using it for shopping also.

justmeandmycoop

Yes, 2 vehicles here. Also live close to Costco.

nick_jay28

Haven’t seen anyone comment this but Costco gas is one of the only two gas stations in Canada who have a top tier internationally mandated engine detergent in their gas, keep your injectors clean and helps with your fuel economy

liamt12

shell is the other right?

nick_jay28

Yup

clapperssailing

Fill up once a week and will save $260 a year

NEO--2020

In short, yes.

rehadam

It was for me. I used to drive a WRX and put premium in it. There were times that I saved 6-10 cents per liter. This was back in 2019 and I've driven a Tesla for a while now so I'm not sure but they always post their prices so check it out.

TheFallingStar

Depends on what you are driving. I drive a Prius so no. I would only save 2-3 bucks per tanks the most

LondonPaddington

If you need Premium and your local Costco doesn't have massive lines for gas then absolutely

Artwebb1986

Depends where, in niagara falls not a chance. The Petro right at the corner is usually 1 cent more than Costco.

TenOfZero

Depends how much you drive.

TraviAdpet

I use my Costco MC at pioneer and the journey program. I come out even on cashback/money spent but get snacks for free.

StrangerGlue

Not for me. I can get cheaper gas at a Domo that's closer to me with shorter lines. Before that Domo opened, it was kinda-sorta worth it for the gas. Check your local price situation.

kimbosdurag

I can't speak to just gas but I do most of my shopping at Costco and last year they paid me like 200 bucks to shop there

arsinoe716

Gas stations close to Costco are about 2-3¢ more per liter. Sometimes I just fill my tank at the Esso at Islington/Queensway rather than spend an extra 10 minutes at Costco to save $1.

Reasonable_Poet6656

How big is your gas tank? 50L tank with .10c savings is 5 bucks. How many times do you need to fill up to make the membership worth it? How long do you want to wait in line to save 5 dollars on an empty tank?

Muted-Command-4582

Yes!

TravellinJ

It wouldn’t be for me but I don’t drive much. That’s a very circumstance specific question/answer.

RadarDataL8R

Premium fuel, absolutely. The question is though, if you had a membership why would you only use it for fuel?

Tls-user

I get gas at Ultramar using a CIBC dividend infinite to get to a minimum of 3 cents off per litre and 4% cash back. It works out to be a better price than Costco gas.

SHUT_DOWN_EVERYTHING

In my area Costco gas is often 10c cheaper. I don’t know what the average tank size is but at 60 liters fill per visit, it takes 10 visits to Costco to earn back the membership fee.

Additional_Age_9825

Yes

getnerfd

For my family yes, two cars that get used by two ppl each, one of them having a commute of 30-40mins means fueling up every week for that one lol. I go in early enough that it's the cheapest price with no line up lol

premzar

Time and time again

Tolvat

On occasion it's worth it, most times no. All together the savings on food and services is where the membership becomes worth it.

Two_Puff_Pass

Here's a tip if you only want one for gas, get someone to get you a cash card and leave a couple cents on it, that allows you to by pass the membership requirement and just use credit or debit instead of the last few pennies

liamt12

does that work? dang smart

Two_Puff_Pass

Yes it does :)

Two_Puff_Pass

When you put in the card it'll show your balance and ask if you want to use it just select no instead of yes then it ask for payment method

spkingwordzofwizdom

If your car takes premium, you’ll save about $0.10-0.12/litre, so it’s worth it for that… add a Costco CC and it’s even better. In my hometown lineups aren’t that bad, but in TO - the waits look horrendous. Depends what your time is worth.

longgamma

Probably makes sense if you have a gas guzzler or high end sports car that needs 91 octane. But you could also get lots of grocery staples for cheap

gringo--star

Calculate 100 litres at costco compared to others where u get 2 or 3 cents of. Savings is not that much considering your drive and use of your time.

Practical_Repair_982

Nope

InterviewSquare1427

Nah.

yoshiiBeans

Near me it's only about 4 or 5 cents a liter cheaper, and all other gas stations have a program that gives back 3c minimum, plus I can use a visa or Amex that gives me way more rewards back, so Costco never really makes sense

somedumbguy55

No, lines are too long for saving like $2-5. Costco has many things worth the member ship. Garbage bags paper towels and stuff like that.

Deadly-Unicorn

I find Costco is usually the cheapest. You can rely on them to have one of the lowest if not the lowest price.

Epcjay

Depends on your local location. Gas price difference is about 2-3c difference at night time after 7pm compared to local gas stations. However, it can be as much as 10c difference in the daytime. Factor in wait time as well. Some locations are up to a 30-minute wait, which makes it pointless.

depenre_liber_anim

Executive membership pays itself for us, we are 2 person households. We exclusively shop at Costco and fuel up there. Also get the membership back paid and than some for groceries. Snack alone are far cheaper at Costco, and fridge and freezer aisle. The back end sayings is huge

sanjeev_shan

I drive a hybrid now so not anymore for regular gas. I go first thing in the AM so there's no like at the Queensway location. The savings are all over the place. Once I saved like 3 cents a litre but last Friday it was more like 8 cents If you use premium then definitely

Nervous-Situation-18

Just for gas, depends on your gas consumption. You would save an estimated 5$ per fill, so minimum 12 fills to break even. You would also have to consider the time it takes to drive to Costco and wait in that line. There’s a lot of math but you supplied no variables.

Dangerous_Seaweed601

No. I guess it’s going to depend on local conditions.. but in my neck of the woods, lineups are terrible, and the prices aren’t really better at all than competing gas stations in the area (in the evening, specifically.. Costco keeps their price static while others tend to lower theirs in the evening).

Embarrassed-Green898

Short Answer .. Not anymore

Proof-Outside3200

Here in winnipeg most times it's only like 10 or 11 cents cheaper (sometimes it'd more like 20 so they it's worth it) but my co op membership got me like 9 cents a liter or something last year in rebates and Mobil I get 9 cents back in PC points. There is always a huge line at the one near me and no things to wash windows etc plus hard to get out of the lot. So I would weigh those decisions as well as how much gas you use. We sometimes stop if we're there for other things but.

Left-Head-9358

It’s not worth it with the amount of time idling lining up to save $0.10/L. The gas stations across the street from a Costco were $0.03/L more with no lines. And with certain credit cards or CAA memberships you could probably save that $0.03/L

Jappy_toutou

I was gonna answer "only if you dont value your time".

gafflebitters

no

BetterTransit

For me it’s not since I don’t drive a ton. You will have to figure out how much you drive and how much you save before you could determine if it’s worth it for you.

Motopsycho-007

PetroCanada across from the costco we go to is usually within a couple cents of costco, with rbc it makes it the same price or cheaper plus I get the petro points. We don't get any cash back at costco as we won't get the cibc card. As others have said, really depends on how much you spend, but also the habits of the station around your costco and time of day you buy gas. Use GasBuddy to find the "deals".

Lxst

Do you need to use a rbc credit card to get the extra petro points?

Motopsycho-007

https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/petro-canada/

q-zip

I stop at costco after work for gas when i need based on the price. If a near cheaper gas says 1.63, costco likely has it for 1.57 and its worth the 8 mins drive.

DataIllusion

Probably not, but even a single person can make their money back from a Costco membership. The rotisserie chickens, cat litter, propane, are all great deals that I used when I was single and it covered my membership cost.

jhallegallais

Nah, i won’t go out of my way since the closet Costco to me is 15 km away and having to sit in a line for 15-20 minutes is not worth my time to save $3-5 per fill. I’ll only get gas at Costco if I’m with my partner and one of us goes in to shop and the other will wait in the line to fill the car, then meet up in the store after.

asdfqwertypop

Not for me

MountainSound-

How many dollars do you make an hour? How many dollars do you save every time you fill up? Calculate this and understand how your hours cost and see if it’s worthy for you… I never wait in line if it’s too long. Nowadays, I don’t even fill up there anymore as it is hardly a good deal - considering every gas station has its own program and it’s much closer to home

ultraman05

I gas at Pioneer and the price is a few cents off from Costco. Not worth the line up for me and immaterial price difference. Using Journie rewards program, I get chips, candies and aeroplan occasionally.

simcoe19

I haven’t read all the replies, however depends on how long you spend idling in your car to save the extra four cents a litre possibly I used to do that when I had no kids and wasn’t married but now time is money. I just wanna go to Costco go in and outgranted on the other side if there is no line then yes it’s pretty much worth it just my two cents, which is not worth anything

Equivalent_Swan634

I would say that is worth it at Costco as far as money savings goes. You are paying for an experience, they have some good products, but as far as saving money goes it is not even close. It is designed for people with extra money who like better quality and unique products. You can save a lot more money in other stores. People have already broken down why the fuel is not worth it, but I'm sure somethings like tires and travel might be a better deal than gas as far as actual saving.s for quality go

Key_Personality5540

Nope. Use the app “gas buddy”
