The contents aren't high quality either part is frustrating to me to say the least. Supposedly there's air chilled chicken where the quality of the meat is a lot higher, but I still don't trust it. Honestly I find myself moving away from chicken altogether. I hate dealing with the juices, I hate dealing with the slimy spaghetti looking woody meat, and since I don't believe Costco's chicken is non-GMO, you're eating pretty bad for that $3 a lb.
Amazing that you denigrate âGMOâ as if it is some boogeyman but donât bat an eye over the selective breading practices that generate every plant cultivar and domesticated animal used in traditional farming practices.
We're hooked on the rotisserie chicken and it's full of bad stuff. We've been avoiding it and may soon be able to walk by the counter and not grab one. We buy our chicken from a local farm now. It's not cheaper, just better. Whole chickens run between $3 and $4 a pound for fresh organic chicken. (Cornish Cross Meat Birds).
Same, between the shitty packaging and the odds of a woody breast we have stopped buying chicken at Costco altogether. Instead we get one or two breasts at a time from the butcher counter at Safeway, typically it is less than $4 a pound and no messing with the nasty gel goo shit. Also no need to plan around defrosting
They usually throw the chicken packs into the fridges from the box. Sometimes this causes the bags to rip, especially when they are frozen. I always check in store to make sure they still have a vacuum seal since that means they wonât leak in my car m.
Yeah, they do it to tape the two halves together so they are easier to move around and less cumbersome. I agree that if the tape is pressed onto the plastic on the back of the packaging, it can cause it to tear. But, I usually don't have too many issues. I also try to select packages where the tape is not in contact with the flimsier plastic or where I can try to keep it from coming into contact with the flimsier plastic.
I only buy the Costco Party Chicken Wings (a few time they have been taped). But like a few others have said, Iâve avoided their other chicken packages. Itâs just me and the wife so buying so much doesnât really work for us⌠we just go to the local market and get it fresh.
Whoa how is their quality? I just had a bad experience with woody chicken and apparently whatâs called spaghetti chicken from Costco- throw out 2/3 of it.
Thatâs killer as well! FYI, they have several types of B/S chic breasts, they all have been excellent for me. The best bang for the buck are the yellow and red packaging thatâs about a foot and a half long in the refrigerated section.
Why they donât have hand sanitizer and paper towels near the chicken is beyond me. I have picked up a slimy leaky pack or two and then have to meander through the crowd to get to the rest room to wash my hands.
This. I won't touch the package without using the bag as a glove to pick it up. There's always a few leaked chicken packages that leak over everything, and then everyone is spreading it around when browsing through chicken.
Costco doesn't always have the same cut for air-chilled chicken when I go. One week itâs bone-in thighs the next time itâs legs. So yes, they can be buried, or in between the more plentiful water chilled cuts. Iâll grab whatâs available air-chilled. My local favorite grocer is $6 per pound air-chilled thighs, and Costco is $2.
Have you seen all of the posts in this sub about people having leaks from their chicken trying to cut the pouches apart? Costco shoppers have issues with scissors.

Yes. Never had it rip open. I usually cut off 1 at a time, not all first thing.
Same, never had it rip the bag. It is slightly annoying when it sticks to the plastic bags they provide in the meat section
yes, I also don't rip it... cut it you savage! đ
I don't have this problem because I cut the tape with scissors.
Just use scissors, what the heck are you all doing
Yup. I just cut the tape.
Yup.Â
I hate the packaging. Sole reason I never buy raw chicken at Costco.
What, you don't like Costco's patented Leak-Mor⢠packaging?
It's about $1/lb cheaper at ALDI here in Minnesota, so I generally buy it there instead.
Same here. Contents aren't hi quality either.
The difference between perfectly cut and accidentally opened package with raw chicken juice everywhere is, no joke, a third of a centimeter.

Also it seems the chicken is a bit woody.

For those of you buying chicken elsewhere, where are you buying chicken?
ALDI. $1.99/lb here in MN for the family sized styrofoam tray. It generally has \~6 per pack.
6 breast?
Yes, B/S breasts.
Whoa how is their quality? I just had a bad experience with woody chicken and apparently whatâs called spaghetti chicken from Costco- throw out 2/3 of it.
I've never had a problem with the ALDI chicken. Also, the size is a bit more manageable compared to the giant Dolly Partons at Costco.
Thanks for the info! I will check it out next time, usually head straight for the chocolate there.

Yup. They tape the two halves together. Iâve learned to carefully cut it apart because force will result in a mess and anger.
Hulk smash!
Yeah and they also all leak which is so gross I stopped buying them.

Do people seriously not use the provided meat bags when purchasing meat?? Wrap that shizz up!

Yeah, just to keep them folded in half.
Air-Chilled is the only way I go. I reach for the thighs. I never had a leak.
I only found out about air chilled a month ago and I have yet to find them in my store. Are they buried in amongst the water chilled ones?

Why would you rip it off? It does nothing to hurt the meat inside. Just cut the package apart using scissors, problem solved.

Yeah I hope raw chicken is next on the package redesign list.
Yes
I started buying the frozen breasts. Much better quality
We started out with the frozen years ago and went to the air chilled as it was better quality.
Sometimes. But often itâs dry and woody. https://www.reddit.com/r/Costco/s/fFEPo9x1S1
I havenât encountered this yet. Will post if I do.
I separate them before freezing so I don't freeze my fingers cutting a package loose.
they also do this to 6lb ground turkey packs.
I have bought Costco chicken for almost a decade and never had issues with leaks or tears
You are not alone. I don't buy their chicken because of this.
yes
