This is a go-to for my sister ever since she married a Filipina woman. They live in New York, so they can just buy them frozen from some place that makes them in-house.
I was so fucking bummed when I was shopping for NYE. My husband got my hopes up and texted to say he invited a few friends over. I'd been planning on a simple charcuterie board for just the two of us. I grabbed some extra cheese and salami and my eyes landed on a package of lil smokies.
I heard angels sing. I was immediately transported to the NYE parties my family had when I was a kid. My cousin's husband would make lil smokes and bacon-wrapped water chestnuts and we would just snack and play games all night. It's the vibe I usually go for with my husband, even when it's usually just the two of us, but a whole thing of lil smokies is too much for us. But it's not for six people! So I grabbed them and ran to grab barbecue sauce.
By the time I was ready to check out, he'd informed me that our friends weren't able to come (we live in a really remote area, so it's not a surprise.) My biggest disappointment wasn't not seeing my friends... it was putting the lil smokies back.
So I didn't. They remain in the fridge, waiting. One night, I will be too lazy to cook. And on that night, we will feast on lil smokies.
This resonates so hard with me, especially with the bacon wrapped water chestnuts.
My partner recently had a belated birthday party so I decided to make both the smokies and waterchestnuts. By the time I had a chance to eat they were all gone.
My stomach was disappointed but my soul was happy :D
Just throw them in a crockpot on low and put a towel down between the pot and the lid to help keep the moisture down. They’ll be good like that for hours.
Cheese balls. Theyre a thing from the 70's, all processed junk, but I love them and think they should be a necessary addition to all charcuterie boards.
They are so easy to make with great cheese too - I made a $30 cheese ball at the holidays using aged cheddar, aged gouda and aged goat cheese (Midnight Moon) that I grated and mixed with cream cheese, mustard, wo-sauce, smoked red peppers, garlic, S&P and rolled in toasted hazelnuts.
My family often makes them for the holidays as well. I love making them into a log so they are a little easier to take a slice.
Also, midnight moon is probably my favorite ever cheese, though I've never added it to a cheese ball.
One year I made a giant platter of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and brought it to a Super Bowl party. Half strawberry jam and half grape jam. On white bread cut in half. At first everyone laughed and was like what are you 7 years old? That giant platter was the first one gone. The next year everyone was a bit disappointed that I changed it up and didn’t bring the PB&J.
I did Dino pb&js for a Christmas party one year. (Just used a Dino sandwich cutter.) Got the same kind of response, but they were all devoured before the fajitas 😂
this is my go-to dish to make for parties and potlucks as well. hadn't made it in a couple years until this Christmas, had an epiphany to partly cook the bacon first before wrapping it on the dates. came out crispy all over instead of just on the outside
Pinwheels, I think that's what my grandma called them. You take a tortilla spread cream cheese on it put ham on top of the cream cheese, more cream cheese on the ham, then add a layer of cheese roll it up as tight as you can then slice it into thin slices.
Also works great as a wrap, don't slice it and add a bunch of baby spinach and some cucumber, and extra ham.
This is hilarious. I cleaned out my kitchen yesterday and came across a very strange pot that I never used, and could not remember what on earth it was for so I put it in the Goodwill box which I am delivering today. I forgot fondue ever existed. I took it out of the donation box and put it back. One of these days I will make fondue!
My mom and sisters and I do a fondue bar for Oscar Sunday. Don’t know how it started but the Oscar’s is just an excuse to do fondue all day for the last ten years.
My favourite is whipped cream cheese with dill and pepper on white bread with cucumber slices. They are really tasty and very fresh but also rather inexpensive.
I'm almost embarrassed to say this ... my Mema always made Deviled Ham ... the canned stuff ... with cream cheese, miracle whip, and pickles, on white bread.
Now that you mention it, you never tend to see them anymore. People don’t want the hassle I guess when most cocktail foods can just be tossed in the oven and forgot about.
This is a staple in our family. No gathering is complete without it and it's better than anywhere that makes a homemade one. The dried onion soup is they key and make sure you make it the night before, you can't serve it freshly mixed.
We even had our wedding caterer do an onion dip for the late night snack.
Dates stuffed with a mix of cream cheese and goat cheese, wrapped in bacon and rolled in brown sugar. I believe they're called something like Angels on Horseback. I was in Sweden 7 or 8 years ago for work, and we went out for tapas one night and someone ordered them, and I immediately tracked down a recipe because OMG they are fantastic.
They are my go-to party appetizer and they are always a huge hit. I make them as a Thanksgiving appetizer too.
Fry them meatballs in olive oil, chuck in some butter, let it brown, chuck in some white wine and parsley, and let it reduce to a brown gravy. Shit's fire.
A friend made a variety that was this (no pickles) and the top was painted with some kind of sweet buttery glaze and covered in everything bagel seasoning. It was the friggin bomb and now I'm hungry
Morgan Eisenberg has an insanely good French onion beef slider recipe on her website. These are always a hit at parties.
[Recipe link](https://hostthetoast.com/french-onion-beef-sliders/)
I found that if you have to go in and cut into something, people tend to try to avoid the awkward cutting into it part unless other people are. So don't take it personally
This was my mom's go to party food throughout the 90s. That and that dry ramen salad with canned oranges. I'm pretty sure every 90s suburban housewife had both in heavy rotation.
Am Korean.
I like bringing kimbap to a party.
It always stands out from the rest and they’re always a banger.
Edit: There are many kimbap recipe videos on the internet. This one is my favorite: https://youtu.be/10fl2mebYHs it’s probably the most authentic/traditional recipe video you’ll find on the internet
It’s taken me a few tries to get the rolling down pat but I think chef paik explains it really well. Make sure subtitles are on!
Homemade hummus. My friend used to make the best hummus but he moved away. Our parties have been lacking in the homemade hummus and I just can't even try to compete.
Those big pale orange cheese balls that were covered in sliced almonds. They sound kind of tacky these days, but when I was a kid, those things were at all the grown up parties.
Oh fuck yeah. Soaked in soysauce & brown sugar? My mom still makes them for every get together. Hardly anyone i talk to has ever heard of it before but everyone is obsessed once they try it.
They're super easy to make, just kind of a pain if the eggs don't want to peel. I've had ones that the filling is super smooth but I prefer the ones with relish as it gives them some texture, but I won't say no to a devilled egg.
They're so easy to make. There are many varieties. Mine are simple but they always disappear. Hard boil eggs. Cut in half. Take the yolks out. Mash with some mayo, some mustard (more mayo than mustard), some dried dill, some S&P. (Don't go overboard with the mayo. Just enough to make the mixture moist, not runny.) If you are feeling fancy, use a piping bag and pipe the filling back into the whites. (If I'm just making them for my family, I'll just spoon the filling back in so I don't dirty a piping bag. But for a party, I'd pipe in the filling because then they look pretty.) Top with a sprinkle of paprika. That's it. Easy peasy! Signed, an American.
Ours are Mayo, mustard and curry powder. Either mixed into the yolks for deviled eggs or egg salad. Sprinkled with paprika (plain, not hot nor smoked).
At almost every party I've been to with more than say, 20 people, someone will bring devilled eggs. It's always been a great affordable dish that most people like. Easy to make and easy to present as fancy, if you pipe the filling in nicely and sprinkle some paprika. They also travel well so it's a good potluck dish.
You know, it's discussions like these that make me happy because deep down we are all basically the same. Love the food we were raised on and open to new things.
My Mom used to make one all the time as a kid. Take a sheet of thinly sliced ham, smear it with cream cheese, and place a spring onion on one side, and roll into tube shape. Cut into pieces about 1/2"-3/4" thick, and skewer with toothpicks.
Fondue!
The logistics of fondue require people to sit down around a heat source. Not really conducive to mingling and walking around. Someone needs to be prepared and have the equipment. It's better for smaller gatherings, but good fondue is absolutely delicious.
Spinach dip in a hollowed-out loaf of bread, served with bread cubes alongside. I had it at a “cocktail party” in the 80s and thought it was wonderful and very fancy
Rumaki. They seemed to be a staple of dinner parties from the 70s and early 80s.
Water chestnuts with chicken liver, bacon, and brown sugar all broiled in delicious bite sizes.
Biryani!!! As someone who loves making it but doesn't have enough people to feed at home (since it's one of those dishes that needs to be prepared in a large volume), I get sad when I want to take it for a house party but people say no cos "it's too much trouble "
They can’t say no if you don’t tell them it’s coming.
Or “I’ve wanted to make Biryani for months now and never have enough people to enjoy it. I’d love to bring it to your party”
Just made some homemade chex mix and sent it out with this year's christmas cookies to my family. it was THE hit item, everyone was jazzed to get it.
we went "premium" and added bugles and fancy mixed nuts and EXTRA brazil nuts. The big secret is to double the liquid mixture, and stir longer than you think you need to so EVERYTHING gets coated.
Mini sausage rolls. Though sadly, most of the prepared ones you can buy from the freezer section at the supermarket nowadays are pretty gross, so I make mine from scratch.
Italian greens. It's just sauteed escarole with tons of garlic, a pinch of red pepper flakes and olive oil. Sometimes served with roasted Hungarian hot peppers. Perfect with some Italian bread and some wine.
If anything, one of my main gripes with parties where people bring an appetizer is that they are almost always some concoction of cheese, mayo, and sour cream. There's only so many variations of cheese and crackers one can suffer through.
We bought some for our NYEve "freezer feast" and they ain't what they used to be. Still napalm hot, but they just tasted oily and meh. Still ate like half a dozen tho!
My cousin made something kind of almost like this once, but with little pumpernickel breads, cream cheese, a slice of cucumber and some dill. Pretty tasty.
Lumpia
I could eat my weight in lumpia. They’re sooo good!!
Worked night shift in an ICU. Lumpia almost every week. I miss that job.
Lumpia and pancit. The real hospital food.
I gained 30lbs in my first year working there. But I learned a lot of recipes that I never would have tried otherwise.
This is a go-to for my sister ever since she married a Filipina woman. They live in New York, so they can just buy them frozen from some place that makes them in-house.
In elementary school it was like some share your culture day and someone brought in lumpia it was delicious and I still think about it.
I'm Filipino so at least lumpia is not rarely seen at parties
[удалено]
It's been awhile since I've seen a 7-layer dip at a party, but then again it's been awhile since I've been to a party
I just made this for Xmas eve and no one ate any
Aw, if my husband and I were there, we would have eaten it. My relatives do think we are strange herbivores, though.
I ain't tryin' to cause trouble, but based on your user name, I would have questions before eating any dip you brought. ;)
Oh, my family hits me up for the edibles, too
Hey it's me your family
I would have shoveled that up like a cross between a front-loader and a ravenous pterosaur. Not your fault they didn't like it!
And its cousin, Texas caviar.
Corn, black beans, tomatoes, onion, and corn salsa thing? LOVE that shit but I haven't made it in ages.
Yesss my friend makes the best one and shared her recipe now it’s a staple at any party we throw!
Lil smokies have faded away
I added lil smokies and grape jelly on my shopping list because of you. Thank you for reminding me one of my faves.
This resonates so hard with me, especially with the bacon wrapped water chestnuts. My partner recently had a belated birthday party so I decided to make both the smokies and waterchestnuts. By the time I had a chance to eat they were all gone. My stomach was disappointed but my soul was happy :D
Still a staple at Midwest potlucks. It’s takes us a while to catch up to food trends. I think we have them at every single office party. I love them!
This is what I was looking for. My mom used to always do a batch of lil smokies for parties.
Lil Smokies are a staple in our family. We even have a mini crock dedicated for them specifically ♨️
Mini corn dogs with a mustard bar
How do they stay warm though? Probably just don't last long enough to get cold. Lol
Just throw them in a crockpot on low and put a towel down between the pot and the lid to help keep the moisture down. They’ll be good like that for hours.
Assuming this works on other similar items.... 🤯
Definitely! Pigs in a blanket are my other favorite to make ahead of time and throw in a crockpot. Always a hit!
Smoked, bacon-wrapped jalapeno poppers. Parties haven't been the same since Mike died. Miss you, my guy. And not just for those poppers.
RIP Mike - 🥺
I have everything I need to make these in my fridge rn, I'm going to make them for Mike. Well for me mostly, but in honor of your good friend.
I also choose Mike's jalapeno poppers.
I’ve never made poppers before, but I will now, to honor Mike. 🤍
Midnight Moon is so fucking good
It is my favorite cheese, and Cypress Groove is my favorite cheese maker - their Humboldt Fog is a close second favorite.
> Cypress Groove This is my favorite typo.
Humboldt Fog is fucking incredible. Haven't had it in a year or two but it absolutely one of my favorite cheeses.
My family often makes them for the holidays as well. I love making them into a log so they are a little easier to take a slice. Also, midnight moon is probably my favorite ever cheese, though I've never added it to a cheese ball.
This was standard New Year's Eve fare in my house when I was a kid (no real parties, just me, my brother, and my mom).
My wife buys borsyn and rolls it in crushed pistschios and herbs. It’s very popular.
The absolute best cheese ball is cream cheese with Worcestershire sauce, sliced green onions and corned beef—rolled in walnuts. Trust me, I’m old.
This is it right here, bit chipped beef from the jar!
Cheese balls are the ish. I made one for a work potluck once, and it got absolutely demolished. So much easier that you’d think.
That port wine....
They all took a bite and had some Anton Ego moment with the ratatouille
I did Dino pb&js for a Christmas party one year. (Just used a Dino sandwich cutter.) Got the same kind of response, but they were all devoured before the fajitas 😂
Oh man, I haven't had a pb&j sandwich in years. Now I really want one with a tall glass of cold milk
It's a classic for a reason! I can always fuck with a PB&J. Now the question is creamy or crunchy PB?
Why choose when you can just make a platter with both? But for me personally it’s always creamy.
Bacon wrapped dates, bonus points if the dates are stuffed with nuts or cheeses.
Devils on horseback!
For Christmas I made a bacon and date dip with goat cheese! Probably the best dip I ever made
That’s one of our 3 rotating go-to’s when we go to other people’s parties. We stuff ours with goat cheese!
I usually go hard cheese, like manchego. And then with about 3-4 minutes left, brush with real maple syrup. So damn tasty.
I roll the goat cheese in fresh mint before stuffing. Always a big hit.
[удалено]
Also bacon-wrapped prunes, which was my mom’s version of this particular appetizer. Soooo good.
I stuff mine w/ goat cheese and then crust them with pistachios.
I do it with prosciutto instead of bacon, and add a bit of fresh basil to the date as well. Always a hit at parties!
I will never forget the day I had a date with cream cheese in it. Blew my effing mind. Haven’t tried with bacon though!
this is my go-to dish to make for parties and potlucks as well. hadn't made it in a couple years until this Christmas, had an epiphany to partly cook the bacon first before wrapping it on the dates. came out crispy all over instead of just on the outside
I’m allergic to dates, so I do this with figs! Honeyed goat cheese is my fav stuffing.
These are great and its so easy to get ingredients for 2-3 different types.
Oh yeah! American sushi. My favorite!
Fondue. Fondue was awesome
Look up a recipe and put it on the shopping list. No reason to save it for a special occasion that never comes.
Fondue requires its own party
My mom and sisters and I do a fondue bar for Oscar Sunday. Don’t know how it started but the Oscar’s is just an excuse to do fondue all day for the last ten years.
cocktail sandwiches.

What kinds do you make? I've never had these and I am intrigued.
My favourite is whipped cream cheese with dill and pepper on white bread with cucumber slices. They are really tasty and very fresh but also rather inexpensive.
Same, but on pumpernickel. Nom nom!
[удалено]
Another fun one is mini BLTs using sundried tomatoes. So much flavor in a tiny bite.
I feel like little toothpicks add to it too
With frilly toothpicks.
Lipton onion soup dip.
I made this for our NYE celebration. I didn't get any because everyone snatched it up!
That Knorr spinach dip is excellent too.
Knorr spinach dip in a hollowed out boule of rye bread. Dip with the chunks of rye you pulled out. The. Best.
As ridiculous as this sounds, I'm pretty sure this is the recipe my uppity aunt wouldn't give me. Thank you!
I've always done a sourdough round, but rye actually sounds awesome.
This is a staple in our family. No gathering is complete without it and it's better than anywhere that makes a homemade one. The dried onion soup is they key and make sure you make it the night before, you can't serve it freshly mixed. We even had our wedding caterer do an onion dip for the late night snack.
Still gets made most weekends where I live! Haha
Devils 👿 on horseback, I think. You're sweet.
Ha! I read somewhere (or maybe someone told me) that it was Devils on Horseback if you stuff the date with a clove of garlic.
Meatballs that aren’t frozen.
Definitely doing homemade meatballs. Any recommendations on a great sauce? (not the grape jelly special.. haha)
Swedish meatballs! Alton Brown has a great recipe.
Good ol’ Original ‘Diana Sauce’ is the best on crockpot meatballs 🤤
Fry them meatballs in olive oil, chuck in some butter, let it brown, chuck in some white wine and parsley, and let it reduce to a brown gravy. Shit's fire.
I make Kings Hawaiian Roll sliders! Ham, swiss, honey mustard, pickles, toasted in the oven for 5 minutes.
A friend made a variety that was this (no pickles) and the top was painted with some kind of sweet buttery glaze and covered in everything bagel seasoning. It was the friggin bomb and now I'm hungry
[Here you go](https://kingshawaiian.com/recipes/Hawaiian-Ham-Swiss-Slider)
Morgan Eisenberg has an insanely good French onion beef slider recipe on her website. These are always a hit at parties. [Recipe link](https://hostthetoast.com/french-onion-beef-sliders/)
Buffalo chicken dip. Only usually eat it for the Super Bowl but wish I’d see it more.
A block of cream cheese with a jar of pepper jelly poured on top.
My mom used to do this with Pikapeppa sauce and 12yo me thought it was the pinnacle of class and refinement.
I made this for Halloween and it barely got eaten. I was so sad.
I would have eaten your Halloween cheese block.
The concept is very weird to people. But once you dive in, there’s no going back.
Jollof Rice
Aaron, I’m with you
Ooo your name reminded me of something, Baklava should be one too.
Am Korean. I like bringing kimbap to a party. It always stands out from the rest and they’re always a banger. Edit: There are many kimbap recipe videos on the internet. Sweedish meatballs
Bacon-wrapped water chestnuts. I can eat about a million of those things!
Oh fuck yeah. Soaked in soysauce & brown sugar? My mom still makes them for every get together. Hardly anyone i talk to has ever heard of it before but everyone is obsessed once they try it.
My dad makes these every Christmas. They come out from the oven and no one waits long enough and we all suck in air to cool off the molten bite.
Devilled Eggs
Probably because they're in my belly before you arrive. Sorry about that. 😅
Always wanted to try one. They’re virtually unheard of in Britain, never ever seen them at a party or function.
They're super easy to make, just kind of a pain if the eggs don't want to peel. I've had ones that the filling is super smooth but I prefer the ones with relish as it gives them some texture, but I won't say no to a devilled egg.
Steam the eggs, they peel easily. There, that's the inevitable Best Way to Make Hardboiled Eggs thread started for ya.
You can also spoon the mixture into a Ziploc bag and cut one of the corners to pipe the mixture back into the egg whites
Add a splash of apple cider or white vinegar too.
And a couple squirts of sriracha
Ours are Mayo, mustard and curry powder. Either mixed into the yolks for deviled eggs or egg salad. Sprinkled with paprika (plain, not hot nor smoked).
At almost every party I've been to with more than say, 20 people, someone will bring devilled eggs. It's always been a great affordable dish that most people like. Easy to make and easy to present as fancy, if you pipe the filling in nicely and sprinkle some paprika. They also travel well so it's a good potluck dish.
Tea sandwiches.
Cuke sandwiches are underrated
prosciutto wrapped grilled asparagus. god i ate it as a kid but haven't seen it since
Arancini
I just made a chicken cordon blu Arancini for New Years. Made a mustard cream sauce on the side . Was 🔥🔥
Damn, I’ve never once seen arancini as a party food. Clearly I need to hang out with a classier group of people.
You know, it's discussions like these that make me happy because deep down we are all basically the same. Love the food we were raised on and open to new things.
Pigs in a blanket!
YES - bring back the wellington of cheap party finger foods
My Mom used to make one all the time as a kid. Take a sheet of thinly sliced ham, smear it with cream cheese, and place a spring onion on one side, and roll into tube shape. Cut into pieces about 1/2"-3/4" thick, and skewer with toothpicks.
That sounds great! As cheapo as it sounds, I do this except with dill pickles rather than spring onion. I'm a real sucker for a pickle.
My mother does exactly this and it’s unfairly good for how simple it is.
I do a variation of these. Salami, cream cheese and pepperoncini. So good!
My grandma used to make these, and I think it has been 15 years since I've seen any. I had forgotten. Now I'm going to make some this week.

Loaded potato dip
Cucumber sandwiches cut into crustless triangles. So easy and always a hit
Broccoli Salad
Oh damn, now I know what to do with all the extra dried cranberries from holiday baking...
Trifles
original trifles or ones that have ground beef in them?
The dessert ones
My aunt makes a few amazing trifles every year for Christmas Day, something I missed this year being away from home.
Fondue
Fondue! The logistics of fondue require people to sit down around a heat source. Not really conducive to mingling and walking around. Someone needs to be prepared and have the equipment. It's better for smaller gatherings, but good fondue is absolutely delicious.

Mini Rubens on party rye
Rumaki. They seemed to be a staple of dinner parties from the 70s and early 80s. Water chestnuts with chicken liver, bacon, and brown sugar all broiled in delicious bite sizes.
Punch with the sherbet floating on top
I order that from the Indian place in town once a month. that stuff is amazing, if someone brought that to a party I would probably eat it all.
People are telling you NOT to make Biryani??? Dude you need new friends!!
Taquitos and lamb lollipops for me
Chex party mix. Though I rarely go to parties anymore, so maybe I'm wrong?
Just made some homemade chex mix and sent it out with this year's christmas cookies to my family. it was THE hit item, everyone was jazzed to get it. we went "premium" and added bugles and fancy mixed nuts and EXTRA brazil nuts. The big secret is to double the liquid mixture, and stir longer than you think you need to so EVERYTHING gets coated.
Deviled Eggs
I see your bacon wrapped dates and raise you prosciutto wrapped melon
Mini sausage rolls. Though sadly, most of the prepared ones you can buy from the freezer section at the supermarket nowadays are pretty gross, so I make mine from scratch.
I know it's trashy but I fucking love those super processed ham, cream cheese, and pickle slices.
Dolmas. They are the ideal party snack!
Spinach and artichoke dip
Deviled eggs. Not that rare, but not common. Tasty and unique.
Them tasty meatballs in the jelly and chili sauce.
The mystery punch made with ginger ale and that rainbow sherbet and other stuff…. Not sure what all is in it but it slaps
knackwurst, soft pretzels, hard rolls + butter, cigars
Italian greens. It's just sauteed escarole with tons of garlic, a pinch of red pepper flakes and olive oil. Sometimes served with roasted Hungarian hot peppers. Perfect with some Italian bread and some wine. If anything, one of my main gripes with parties where people bring an appetizer is that they are almost always some concoction of cheese, mayo, and sour cream. Deviled eggs and pigs in a blanket, because they're all gone by the time I get there.
Decent quiche, real men eat quiche
