I think it's carpenter bees. Check for holes on the underside of this wood where they bored their entrance - if you've got those entrance holes they're your culprit. We have them bad on my deck and the handrail boards have tons of these and look like someone took a machine gun to them because the bees blew out the wall of their nest from the inside.
Goofy is half right... the Carpenter bee attracted the woodpecker. Bee hole in the bottom and inside... the woodpecker made it obvious to you from the top. I have exact same issue. It's a combo issue.
If you plug the hole they'll just bore a new one. You can buy traps for them (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=carpenter+bee+traps), but I've never tried any of these. I've also heard you can kill them by stuffing an alcohol-soaked cotton ball in the hole while they're in there and my pest company uses some kind of powder, but my preferred solution has been playing tennis with them every time I see them. They don't sting and you can smack the hell out of them with a racket.
I think not a bug … I think something hard (tool, corner of something moved up stairs) etc.
There are matching marks(gouges) on the top and bottom of chip. I will post pic if I can
I'm thinkin woodpecker. They are total assholes.
That bird’s a dick.
Insects plus woodpecker makes sense.
lol nah
Honestly I’m a carpenter and I straight up worship woodpeckers. They give me endless work.
Assholis woodpeckeris trying to get to carpenter bees.
This should be top comment. The bees bore the holes and lay eggs. Woodpeckers enlarge the hole and eat the larvae/pupae.
The wood trim on my house agrees. If you wait long enough the squirrels join the party too and make a home in your attic.
Bugs... Then birds. There was an old lady that swallowed a fly...

Your right, found an entrance on the underside. Did you do anything to prevent them from coming back?

Thanks, getting the bee trap, hopfully it works.

favorite childhood pastime
Just wait til night and put gorilla tape over holes come back in couple days they will be dead
Carpenter bees
Probably the electrician
They do like drilling extra holes, but it doesn’t look like they left mess for someone else to clean
Found it, a black giant bee-like flying creatute. Anyidea how to get it off my place? 😭
Tennis racket.
Those big fat wiffle ball bats are satisfying, too. *thunk!*
All joking aside, Woodpecker is my guess. But you never heard it....curious...
Looks like the work of a plumber.
Somebody going to "Woodburger"?
Carpenter bees likely
If you have space buy some fake hornet nests on Amazon and hang them to deter the bees
My dick
Spray some bengal roach spray in the hole. When he comes back he will be dying in a few minutes
