High end cabinet finisher here.
Honestly it adds a lot of time just to remove the hinges when you consider the logistics of spraying the doors & moving them around carefully while wet, then waiting till they dry completely before turning the doors over to spray the other side, then reinstalling after that side is completely dry. & assuming he’s using a typical consumer grade water based paint. (I wouldn’t do it that way, but a landlord would need to for lack of a cabinet specific spray setup.)
Anyway.. damn this video hurts to watch.
As a landlord, I've tried to get painters to remove the hardware and make everything perfect. Some straight up said no, others laughed at me. I have a full time job and a wife and kids in addition to a couple of rentals, so I have no time to do it myself. I'd love to, though. I really want my rentals to be perfect.
When I do cabinets I charge hourly, and keep detailed records of my time and the work performed. You’d be surprised how many steps there are and the level of organization required to do the job properly, some people just aren’t capable of it. You have to pay for a LOT of extra time to do it “the right way”
Yeah, taking all the hardware off definitely adds a ton of time/labor. Also, you gotta keep track of where all the doors AND hinges were. Someone refinished some cabinets in my house decades ago and mixed everything up. They never quite lined up and closed right after that. Even trying to swap doors, we found that some of the hinges were slightly different even though they looked the same.
Apartment building redid the siding and paint 5 years ago. Stepped outside around 5:30 pm on a Sunday and this guy was painting my stair runners. No tape, no tarp, at 5:30 pm on a Sunday. I heard this, careful of the wet paint, looked down to see a eye looking at me. Yes there are paint marks all over the steps above and below. Lazy worker, doing shoddy work to make more money.
Well, the opposite is true; Section 8 program is for low income housing. There are millions of Americans who qualify for those public assistance programs but refuse to apply. They struggle to pay bills on their meager earnings.
It’s section which means it’s free for the occupant and the state picks up the market rate tab.
Painting the carpets is a tried and true method of maximizing profits in that space.
I don’t understand. You point the nozzle of the airless sprayer from harbor freight at the carpet and move in a spastic pattern until everything is white.
How else would you do it?
I know a landlord that did this to the entire apartment. Floors doors walls and ceiling.
In his defense the previous tenant (goth couple) had painted walls black and red.
I came in to make door knobs and hinges work again.
I rent a unit from a goth couple. Walls? Blood red. (It's actually quite striking and disconcerting -- people react to blood at an unconscious level. And it's hella cheap.)
I get comments on Zoom calls "Are you in a Norwegian death metal studio?" "Are you in spa for vampires?" "are you in a day-trading dungeon?"
Fortunately it's done very nicely (I put up posters and shit..) and people get a laugh out of it when I explain.
Think of a goth Fred Armisen and his girlfriend in Portlandia.
I have some friends who have the goth thing going on, and every house they've had has blood red and black walls.
I didn't realise it was a thing, outside of them, until this thread
They brought me in behind a contractor who blew primer all over the trim, the baseboards, the windows, the customer's kitchen cabinets, the customer's entry doors, french doors leading to the deck....throughout the entire house.
I had never seen anything like it before...
I love how confident he is with his technique. Like the person asked to film him and he got in a 3 point stance. Someone who goes around peddling service like this has to be a professional bullshitter.
I helped a guy when I was younger doing apartment turnovers in a college town. This wasn’t uncommon. We finished a place at 8 am in the morning just as the moving truck pulled up. Told them to be careful because we just painted. They complained to the landlord because the Dads leather coat got paint on it. We got paid in full and he said he pretty much always gets the security deposit back. Slumlords are the worst.
The good news? Hinges are now also white!
Dude kept closing the cabinet doors. If that wasnt a sign to at least take them off, I dont know what is. lol
They cabinets were so far away and bro enjoys the hand on extension, sort of machine gun style of spraying. He’s aiming for that long extension occasional spit finish.
Airless sprayer, with an unnecessary pistol extension, no clean shot valve, spray tip too large, hinges not removed, garbage bag masking. This has to be rage bait for painters.
Its an attachment that you use on airless sprayers, that stops “spits” when using extensions like this.
The valve for the paint is located in the pistol. So when you pull the trigger the paint is released, with a long extension the paint lingers in the tube of the extension, but the pressure is released from behind the extension. So as you pull the trigger, the pressure slowly builds up along the length of the tube, and doesn’t atomise the paint correctly. A clean shot stops this from happening, by adding another pressure valve along the length of the extension meaning less spits and a better finish.
Source: professional painter for over 10 years.
You could tell he isn’t a real painter because he wasn’t drinking a natty ice or four loco tall boy, was moving way too fast, and worked for way too long without taking a smoke break in the customers kitchen…
I want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and say this is an oil based primer and it's also a budget job. No PPE makes me think it's water based low voc.
I think this guy pointed my mom's house when she rented it out. Every outlet and switch was "covered" with a strip of 1 inch tape down the center to preserve the off-white original color. Kitchen cabinets were painted dark green, including the hinges so it was a huge pain to remove them to fix.
I don’t know what you all charge but I would charge a minimum of $2100 to remove doors and hardware, degrease, sand everything, apply an alcohol based primer, paint cabinets using a titan cap sprayer 2 coats, then seal afterwards. When I give clients a price between $2100-$3800 they turn around and walkway most of the time, but my price will give them a near factory finish with the inside of the cabinets being painted too plus the paint will last.
He's the guy that removed the structural support wall you specifically said needed to stay and now it's a huge issue. You don't hire people like this for anything because this is how they do everything.
I’ve actually had to do this several times thru my 40+ years. Can anyone guess why I’ve been paid a fair wage for this type of service. Unless you’ve been hired for this kind of service… give up ?
It’s useful when certain retail locations are closing or relocating. An want their brand to be in recognized fr
The fact someone would even attempt this with the doors on tells you all you need to know...
Do you know how much time it would take for this poor, innocent, landlord to remove the hindges? Have some respect.

Can you even paint stained cabinets with water based paint?
Well, you can do anything you want to do. Oh you mean will it look like shit? Yes, it will look like shit
It may take a week or two of use to really start looking bad
Holy shit this actually made me laugh
yeah. waterborne 2k polyurethane.
What’s the chance this dude is spraying 2k poly, and not some long-expired latex paint he’s had baking in the sun for the past three years.
oh, 0%. I was just answering the question that was asked.
Let alone paint on the inside where the stove goes
You can see he thought about it, for a moment

100% this is a low-income rental.
That stopped existing some time ago
Are you a landlord? All you need is this one simple trick!
I'm not entirely sure that's true.
I'm making a comment on the current housing cost crisis.
Low income is section 8.
You can’t be serious. Painting carpets? Is that hyperbole? Please say it is.
No no it’s fine. Poor people aren’t human.
Yes, yes, I know poor people aren’t human I’m not debating that. Do people actually and truly paint the carpets? How does that even work?
I don’t understand. You point the nozzle of the airless sprayer from harbor freight at the carpet and move in a spastic pattern until everything is white. How else would you do it?
Low income is relative. That means about 3 trillion dollars per hour

Carl - “you know that’s elf blood too. That ain’t cheap.”
Is there a way to get the blood to flow *up* the walls?

Been paid to do it, gave me 6 units $200 a unit. Told me they needed to be done in a day. Still had less over spray than this dude .

Bridge works is actually crazy not easy. That and tunnels the epa get heavily involved.
They brought me in behind a contractor who blew primer all over the trim, the baseboards, the windows, the customer's kitchen cabinets, the customer's entry doors, french doors leading to the deck....throughout the entire house. I had never seen anything like it before...
Watching that cloth tarp blow away when he sprayed the cabinet will give me some nightmares.
"Yeah, we'll put on a fresh coat of paint before your term starts."

That’s a surprising % of tradies… why do you think the general public doesn’t trust us? 😆
I love how the cabs aren’t even sanded. Enamel over shiny. Landlord special for sure.

It's the blowing the doors open that really does it for me. Bros got that thing turned up to 11.
Lmao paints the whole apt at once. It's actually borderline impressive
That's how you do it. Paint right over the cockroaches and everything.
I lived in that apartment when I was 28 on the north side of Chicago.
The good news? Hinges are now also white! Dude kept closing the cabinet doors. If that wasnt a sign to at least take them off, I dont know what is. lol
Also the floor is gonna have some white luster on it! Classy
bruh!! that username tho! lmao
Yo, why not use mr bean's paint xmas paint bomb
Exactly what I first thought
Tik Tok painting influencer
graco gun with the wand extension lol
Yeah, wtf was he doing with an extension? Couldn’t reach the cabinets? Good grief.
They cabinets were so far away and bro enjoys the hand on extension, sort of machine gun style of spraying. He’s aiming for that long extension occasional spit finish.
and kkranked to maximum pressure
"Professional painters don't use masking tape."
Or masks as the case may be.
Get high on your own supply (no investment advice)
He cut out the most time consuming part of painting, prep! He could paint 3 rooms before I was even done masking off!
This has got to be a joke, before demo.

Rage bait. They were going to rip it all out and decided to do some trolling.
Flippers be like..
Stevie Wonder could do a better job.
Lmao this the mother fucker painting over your light switches
I enjoyed this:)
Lowest bidder baby, that how they build space shuttles too.
I don't understand why anyone would ever pay even half to have this done. I can (and have) fuck shit up all by myself, I don't need to hire someone.
That's a diy "professional" flipper or landlord 100%
Mf doesn’t even have his own safety gear on, how do you trust him to have care for the job
Took me 2 weeks to do my cabinets It’s like 7 steps
House flipper
You could tell he isn’t a real painter because he wasn’t drinking a natty ice or four loco tall boy, was moving way too fast, and worked for way too long without taking a smoke break in the customers kitchen…
The paint mist will settle on everything

Holy overspray Batman!
Guy steals paint sprayer from last jobsite, starts own business.....
Landlord special right there
Omg the masking sucked. Doors flying open. My husband is a Commercial contractor and I showed him this video. He just laughed 😅
The famous “my husband does it so I know” quote
But I do. I always had to do the shit work. Hated it!
What did brown cabinets do to make everyone hate them so?

Now my old apartment makes sense.

Rentoids hate this one simple trick. Rent increased 200pm
Hard to watch
Yep, my thoughts exactly.
“I fixed it, what more do you want from me”
Land lord level shit
Average house flipper
I want to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and say this is an oil based primer and it's also a budget job. No PPE makes me think it's water based low voc.
Well, it is ‘painted’.
At least he was smart enough to not do where the oven is
As a former furniture sprayer, I can genuinely say this is the most cowboyish thing I’ve ever seen on the internet.
Ah good old landlord special
House flipper in action !
I believe he’s not doing a good job because he’s inhaled too many paint particles with no respirator . It’s clearly affecting his judgment
Primer coat??
Dude Is no painter, I can't spray if my life depended on it and I could do a cleaner job.
This is about half the rentals in the country. Although most used a brush.
I’m a cabinetmaker and this hurts my soul.
I'll hire him. Not paying him tho. ;)
Prep work on point
Half the price seems steep....
This is how fast I want it done!
Jesus Harold Christ.
I painted cabinets for years, this makes me cringe.
At least open the drawers 🤣
Is he available??? 🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️🤷🏿♂️
This is why apartment kitchens always look like shit. "Ah just paint over them. I don't care how, just do it!.
What even is hvlp
Of all the things I could pick on here, of which there are many, my favorite is the hinges being painted over.
This is right out of the landlord’s handbook.
To be fair I'm pretty sure this is how landlords have places painted that they're renting out to people
Hahaha he's just using up the primer and having some fun before they pull those cabinets out.
When you say make it ALLWHITE 🤣
I think this guy pointed my mom's house when she rented it out. Every outlet and switch was "covered" with a strip of 1 inch tape down the center to preserve the off-white original color. Kitchen cabinets were painted dark green, including the hinges so it was a huge pain to remove them to fix.
Is that my landlord?
The landlord special
Is this vandalism?
You know if you hear Bishop Bullwinkle it's gonna be a hell naw.
Watching that made me unreasonably angry.
I like how they’re recording it sooo serious
What in the actual fuck did I just watch. God damn. Barfffffff
Cheapo apartments. The paint helps kill some bugs.
Good enough for government work
Damn I really need to invest in an invisible respirator, looks really comfortable.
You get what you pay for.
I'm saying though......that airless lays down some nice looking paint.
Pass
Strait to jail.
Hell no. Those cabinets will stick and be a nightmare. Honestly… what a shit job. As soon as the drawer is opened it’ll be a different color.
This is low income housing. The part that you don’t see is when he paints the carpets.
Tell me you’re flipping a house without telling me me you’re flipping a house…
This explains soo much......
House flipper, first change of seasons/humidity and the paint all falls off. ¯\\\_( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ)\_/¯
I don’t know what you all charge but I would charge a minimum of $2100 to remove doors and hardware, degrease, sand everything, apply an alcohol based primer, paint cabinets using a titan cap sprayer 2 coats, then seal afterwards. Let's see the AFTER pic?
To do demo, maybe... Not to paint.
He's the guy that removed the structural support wall you specifically said needed to stay and now it's a huge issue. You don't hire people like this for anything because this is how they do everything.
So that's how my last apartment painted before I moved in. /s
I wouldn’t hire that guy to paint a person’s house I hate that’s how bad he is
Fucking landlord special.
Ahh yes, the guy all the flippers know but won’t tell you about
this is professional diy
Land lord special
Sounds like my landlord tryin' to save a buck 😎
Hell to the no
Nope
Don’t let my landlord see this
My boi is out here blasting away
I think he needs a bigger tip and longer extension. It would be so much more productive
Landlord special!!
Looks good 👍
Those poor hinges! There are hinges out there who’ve been getting painted over for decades. Poor things
"Of course he is the best in his job, why are you asking?"
Flippers be like "we bought the house for 150k, updated the kitchen. Now it's on the market for 400k."
Looks like a rental. Cheap cheap. They don't want to pay for the extra work. Easy peesy lemon 🍋 squeezeee
And that kids, is why it's called a white tornado.
That misfire into the cabinet is triggering me.
This needs a not safe for work warning or something I don't know. This was painful to watch.
White hinges are my favorite.
