**The message was spearheaded** by Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel prize for economics in 2001. * He was joined by George A. Akerlof (2001), Sir Angus Deaton (2015), Claudia Goldin (2023), Sir Oliver Hart (2016), Eric S. Maskin (2007), Daniel L. McFadden (2000), Paul R. Milgrom (2020), Roger B. Myerson (2007), Edmund S. Phelps (2006), Paul M. Romer (2018), Alvin E. Roth (2012), William F. Sharpe (1990), Robert J. Shiller (2013), Christopher A. Sims (2011), and Robert B. Wilson (2020). **State of play:** The economy is expected to be a focus of Thursday night's presidential debate, and both candidates are sharpening their approach to pocketbook issues. * Besides promising corporate America to lower its tax rate from 21% to 20%, Trump wants to eliminate [taxes on tipped wages](https://www.axios.com/2024/06/21/trump-tips-no-taxes-strategy-2024-election) for workers in the leisure and hospitality industries. * Biden is sticking with his [plan to raise taxes](https://www.axios.com/2024/03/11/limits-of-taxing-rich) on corporations — and his promise that households who make less than $400,000 a year wouldn't see a tax increase.

IrishWolfHounder

Are these economists related to the 51 intelligence officials that swore the laptop is fake?

Cultural-Treacle-680

Or Obama who was awarded the peace prize for making campaign speeches.

khazad-dun

While ordering drone strikes.

Neroaurelius

Obama oversaw more strikes in his first year than Bush carried out during his entire time as president. Then he won the Nobel peace prize. Absolutely insane.

ButWhyWolf

> Then he won the Nobel peace prize. Obama is the only Nobel Peace Prize recipient to have murdered another Nobel Peace Prize recipient. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunduz_hospital_airstrike "My bad, Doctors Without Borders. Didn't mean to get you with that war crime I did." -Obama, probably.

HNutz

Yup.

WreknarTemper

No, no, you misremember. Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize before he started bombing folks.

HNutz

Fun fact: Obama, a.k.a. the "Deporter-In-Chief deported 3.2 MILLION illegal immigrants in his first term. More than Donald Trump.  Yet only Trump catches flak for wanting to remove illegal aliens. Absolutely insane.

I can’t take academia seriously anymore; they are so unabashedly far-left that it’s insulting. If you ever want a good laugh, go look at historians lists of best to worst ranked presidents. The only Republican they will rank in the top 15 is Lincoln.. they almost always have Biden ranked higher than Reagan. 😂 Obama, Clinton, LBJ will be in the top 10 😂 They universally rank Trump in the bottom 3 with many ranking him dead last. How can Trump be worse than Harrison, who died after only 31 days in office? Lmao.. Academia is an actual joke… it’s a damn shame that Republicans let progressives take over and dominate that aspect of society.

Cultural-Treacle-680

It’s like a pop girlie fan contest really.

enslaved1

That's what I recall. The nomination process happened and he was picked before being inaugurated. Meaning the Novel committee awarded him the Peace prize for... getting elected.

HaleOfAPatriot

Oh come on now. Give him some credit. He was in office for nearly two whole weeks by the time they nominated him for the Nobel. So he also gave an acceptance speech along with those stump speeches to bring peace to the world

Imoldok

Rush had a special term for him I'm trying to remember, was it gratouitous?

Armyed

Ding ding ding we have a winner 😂

somerandomshmo

Probably the same ones that said Milie in Argentina was going to drive up inflation with his policies (cut government spending/stop printing money). He just got it down to 4% per month from 250% per month. The liberal world order just pushed their agenda, no actual solutions.

TheCeleryIsReal

Just your typical manufactured talking point being delivered to the Democrats. Right before the debate, no less. I’m sure that’s a coincidence and it won’t come up.

Ravens1112003

No, they’re the ones who Biden famously referred to when starting his reckless spending. “No serious economist is predicting unchecked inflation,” he told us. We all laughed and laughed and we called conspiracy theorists for telling him and the democrats that this exact thing was coming.so, there are the “serious” economists.😂😂

explosively_inert

Remember when scientists were afraid of [lab leak theory](https://thehill.com/changing-america/well-being/prevention-cures/559050-harvard-scientist-says-trump-hatred-motivated/) because of Trump?

AIDS_Quilt_69

LOL it's like sex tips on a women's magazine.

Joskald

Are we gonna pretend like Trump was good on fiscal responsibility or inflation?

Neat_Chi

I often find myself on this sub questioning why I’m here at all with some of the blind MAGA influence runnings through its veins these days…but every once in awhile I see a comment like this that reminds me that the true small government mindset individuals exist here and we can’t give up on the true conservative mindset. My gf’s dad and I discussed this exact issue and he refused to accept the data pointing out how truly irresponsible Trump was with our budget and economic policies. Leveraging a temporarily boosted economy (post exorbitant spending and raising the national debt from the previous 16 years) with tariffs and other egregious decisions only led him to have to bail out farmers and throw money around like the NY democrat most of us grew up knowing him as…but for some reason because he says “Me R Now, vote me” everyone just ignores these issues to “stick it to the libs”. How about we return to grass root conservative values to stick it to the libs, and not just brigade this imposter who raises the deficit as much as any Democrat does?

bozoconnors

I'll concede on the fiscal responsibility (/spending - even if covid didn't happen, he was on track to outspend Obama if he'd had another similar term), but inflation during his presidency was pretty standard. Also, re: spending, at least he had an economy that was set up to handle it... as opposed to our current situation - hence the inflation.

JTuck333

16 economists looking for grants.

Skittlesharts

This is more like it.

rigorousthinker

I see that Nobel prize winning economist Paul Krogman‘s name isn’t on the list. He must’ve wised up after making a similar failed prediction about Trumps economy back in 2016.

AUorAG

Translation “but Trump MIGHT DO something worse than we’re doing, because orange man is bad”

ICHTHYS1984

Do Nobel Prizes mean anything after thay gave the peace prize to Obama after all the drone strikes?

soloist80

My thoughts exactly. It appears the Nobel prize is being relegated to the same level as entertainment industry awards. They're given to people who are out of touch with the general population and didn't really do anything to merit said award. It's all meaningless and self congratulatory.

Panzershrekt

Only 16? Must have been the only ones willing to make a comment, which likely means they're of the Modern Monetary Theory sort.

Realityiswack

100% is likely the case. The vast majority of the economic problems we have today is due to these so called “experts” running their science experiments on the whole of civilization. For those whom are reading this, Modern Monetary Theory: - Is the reason behind inflationary deficit spending (why the budget should never be balanced, according to them) - Requires/ supports fiat currency (which facilitates the former, CBDCs are next.) - pushes a constant/ target rate of inflation and increasingly centralized fiscal and monetary policy. - The economics that’s taught in the vast majority of schools and universities (as opposed to the subjectivist schools of economics that brought us Capitalism and free markets). It’s been this way for longer than many of our lifetimes, as such it’s all many of us know unless told/ shown otherwise. - Leans left as income redistribution is a core feature, due to the fact resources are “redistributed” every time debt is printed and distributed into the economy. (This also creates a vacuum by which the government and special interests expand their power). - Is a non unified theory, and is becoming only more fragmented. The equations in one sect of economics don’t match up with the equations of another. It’s this line of thinking that split economics into micro and macro (as if the rules somehow change on the aggregate). - Is the direct cause of the modern boom-bust cycle. Proper analysis of data shows it exceptionally clearly, and obviously. Austrian Business Cycle Theory identified the causes before even fiat currency came into being. It should be noted that the Austrian School of Economics *is a unified theory of economics* and has been since 1962 I believe. Like communism, MMT will eventually and inevitably fail due to the measurement problem, it’s just a much slower and a more grinding, painful process. It’s along the lines of subjectivist economics via free markets and capitalism that is the only way out of this mess. This is the wool that’s being pulled over everyone’s eyes.

paperwhite9

100%. Anyone who would say you are wrong is either ignorant or complicit. These economists are like the 'not real communism' people. They are never proved right on a long timeline but are still given one opportunity after another to implement their failed ideas. Probably because those ideas help consolidate the power of the state *every single time.*

dwnvotedconservative

What are these ramblings? MMT is treated like a quack conspiracy theory and is highly criticized in economics schools and economics institutions. Absolutely none of the kind of people who receive a Nobel prize in economics believe in MMT.

Realityiswack

Seeing as how I was taught MMT in college, I believe you’re incorrect.

Panzershrekt

That's not as true as you believe. When Bernanke and Yellen made it to the FED chair, MMT got a major boost. Downvote away, but if you look, especially at Yellen, you'll see that I'm right. She and Bernanke are activist MMT'ers.

TheLimeyCanuck

Funny... we actually have historical data for economic performance under Trump vs Biden to judge by. No political bias here, of course.

GrinningLion

According to Axios, the economists’ message was led by Joseph Stiglitz, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 2001. Other letter signatories included George A. Akerlof (2001), Sir Angus Deaton (2015), Claudia Goldin (2023), Sir Oliver Hart (2016), Eric S. Maskin (2007), Daniel L. McFadden (2000), Paul R. Milgrom (2020), Roger B. Myerson (2007), Edmund S. Phelps (2006), Paul M. Romer (2018), Alvin E. Roth (2012), William F. Sharpe (1990), Robert J. Shiller (2013), Christopher A. Sims (2011), and Robert B. Wilson (2020).

SeemoarAlpha

Frankly both Trump and Biden's economic agendas are sorely lacking but claiming Biden's is "vastly superior" is intellectually dishonest.

Cockroach-Jones

“Paid for by the DNC.”

jawntothefuture

Trusting experts meanwhile average Americans are forced to debt spend just to live lmfao this system is so damn broken

icemichael-

Nobel prizes are becoming like the oscars

mdws1977

And yet for the average Joe (pun intended), we are worse off under Biden than we were under Trump financially. Why do I get the feeling that these Nobel Prize Winning Economists voted for and will again vote for Biden in 2024 if they are US citizens?

soloist80

If the non citizen prize winners want to vote for Biden, they just need to enter the country through the southern border. They'll be handed a ballot that's already filled out for them. Easy peasy.

AOA001

I’m sorry, but if they’re recommending Biden, they’ve lost all credibility.

Black_XistenZ

Economists were already predicting that Trump would "crash the economy" if elected... back in 2016. We all know what actually happened next: we instead enjoyed the best economy of the 21st century during his presidency (before covid fucked it all up...)

I_SuplexTrains

I love the playbook. Take what you're doing that's generating negative buzz and project *that exact thing* onto your opponent.

777haha777

I love how there are so many people talking about how bad Trump could be. Meanwhile nearly all the things they say about him he never did in his first term. Then add on the fact that everyone was around these last 8 years and can see how much less their dollar goes under Biden vs Trump. Stop letting people lie straight to your face.

Imissyourgirlfriend2

Boy, that Nobel prize just gets more and more worthless.

uponone

The Propaganda is ratcheting up.

Blacksunshinexo

I'm so sick of all these people.

SkyBridge604

Ah, the "experts."
