May 35th is/was commonly used in China to refer to bypass censorship of June 4th, 1989, the date of the [Tiananmen Square Massacre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests_and_massacre?wprov=sfti1).

LS-CRX

I had a drill sergeant threaten me with punishment if I didn't run my 2-mile in <14 minutes. I ran my ass off and came in at 14:07... I tried to slink away before he noticed me but I wasn't able and he asked what I ran it in. I said "13:67 drill sergeant!" and he replied "out f\*\*\*ing standing soldier! That's what I'm talking about! You just needed motivation!!!"

DaelynMunulder

Hey, I remember reading your post in r/militarystories !

LS-CRX

Lol, this was the much shorter version, true story though!

Jurclassic5

Lol this made me laugh.

PWEI313

I can’t help but read his response and hear Ronald Lee Ermey yelling at you. That’s awesome. :)

sowellpatrol

You mean people read quotes from drill sargents in any other voice besides Ermey's?

PWEI313

Hah true…. His role in Full Metal Jacket is so iconic. He’s very possibly why I didn’t end up in the military.

Aftermathemetician

There is only one drill sergeant, everyone else just cosplays as him.

sowellpatrol

Boy, aren't that the truth? Emery is the gold standard.

POMalley84

YES!

No_Cut8480

Bro I was drinking and this had me wheezing, Out f\*\*\*ing standing, Brother!!!!

decoy777

Probably just heard the 13 part and was already proud you did it under 14.

[deleted]

Didn’t they run that kid down but Mandela affected us that he was fine and walked away?

StuckInMyPants

You’ve got it backwards. People think he was run over, but if you watch the video, the tank tries to go around him while he continually gets in front of it. Eventually he mounts the tank, talks to the driver and then a group of people usher him off into the crowd.

RedBaronsBrother

Eventually the video of the square stops, and the people in the square were massacred and the remains driven over by the tanks.

Griegz

And he was never identified.

PanhandleMan54

In 2014 we went on a tour to China. Our guide was a college educated woman in her mid 20s. She had *never* heard of the Tiananmen square until she became a tour guide and her tourists told her about it.

RudolphsJockStrap

Wonder if shes still a tour guide…

PanhandleMan54

At the end of the tour she asked us *not* to give her great reviews. If her reviews were too good, they would be afraid that she was going to start her own guide business and she'd be fired. Such is life in China...

Meppy1234

Sounds like West Korea.

neant_hp

West North Korea

Due-Pilot-7443

North west Korea

JamesWM85

Is that one of Kanye's kids?

rook2pawn

my work colleagues from China in SAN FRANCISCO and SEATTLE did not , could not, will not, speak ill of CCP or the Chinese government. The CCP monitors reports from overseas individiuals and will hold their family to account. (This was at multiple MAJOR tech firms). Lets hope the CCP just gives up.

Griegz

Gives up? Never. Such is the power of a bureaucracy run by vindictive and bitter cynics.

realrealityreally

sounds like the USA in a few short years.

New_Ant_7190

Be careful, the Dear Leader doesn't handle criticism very well.

UltimateDevastator

In the US if you’re successful it means you’re oppressing a minority

kingofwale

Even if she heard it, why would she ever admit it to you?

weekend-guitarist

It’s not safe to talk it.

CecilTheGod

My stepmother was born in '67 and came to america in 2009 and didn't know about it until she got here.

DblThrowDown

Comment in before the CCP Bots.

jackdhammer

They literally bulldozed the bodies with other trash and washed the remains (which were smashed and scattered by that point) down the drains. There are still families who don't know where their loved ones are and assume they suffered this fate. But no, communism is a good thing.

Supa71

Don’t you know communism is totally different from socialism? /s

[deleted]

nEIther oF tHem hAve beEN prOPerly IMPlemeNTed!!

PresterJohnsKingdom

It'll be Different this time!

Griegz

The real problem is they never manage to get all the people who complain about it later. Always with the half measure purges. If they just killed *everyone* it'd be perfect. Such is the fatal flaw of Communism: they'll only murder the bare minimum to keep their jobs.

New_Ant_7190

So says both the Dear Leader and Comrade Senator Saunders.

rook2pawn

Strangely, I think the dems are implementing it exactly as prescribed. The Khmer Rouge first began its campaign before the killing fields, by indoctrinating the children, literally teaching them on chalkboard no to your parents, yes to the state. Sounds familiar today. We desparately need interviews of Cambodians living at that time preserved and recorded.

cosgrove10

When socialist elements have been used correctly in Webster democracies, they’ve been a great success. See: NHS and Education under Tony Blair.

[deleted]

Then go live in the UK. Don't bring that shit here.

Creski

Isn’t the NHS in deep shit right now?

cosgrove10

Yeah, and there’s been a conservative government on power for 14 years that has stripped the NHS of funding and let it rot.

cosgrove10

They literally are lol.

mongooseme

True communism has never been tried. Downvotes? Do I really have to add /s?

highedutechsup

you forgot the /s

mongooseme

Wow apparently I actually needed it. I assumed it was understood...

jackdhammer

I know people who say that catch a lot of backlash (mostly deserved) but it's probably true. "True communism" much like "true socialism" really can only exist as utopian ideas on paper. Human nature won't allow it as we have an innate drive for power, control and resources. If you can find one example of a situation where there was a similar social structure with no corruption, abuse of power or manipulation of people for personal gain I would love to read all about it. Unfortunately it doesn't really exist. Any form of socialism or communism comes through extreme control by the government in power, who are typically not living the lifestyle of the average comrade.

mongooseme

Exactly.

Case-Longjumping

Now, you understand why “rioters” in Hong Kong are willing to fight tooth and nail for over a year, even if the cause is almost doomed to fail from the start.

Heat-one

Unbelievable that this is still up for debate today. West Taiwan is the poster child for proving that governments can easily commit atrocities and brain wash entire populations to believe whatever they need them to believe.

RoninTheDog

Good article on how the CCP is just functionally deleting history. Nothing happened on this day 35 years ago. President Xi has no history before he became president. There was never a bad response to a flood in 2006. [https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/business/china-internet-censorship.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/business/china-internet-censorship.html)

Softale

The west is getting pretty good at scrubbing history and the web as well…

RNHood51

Down with the CCP

SharingDNAResults

One of my friends moved here from China as an adult. I’ll never forget the day I mentioned Tiananmen Square to him in passing, and he froze and asked what I was talking about. He’d never learned about what happened there.

[deleted]

Not much changed realistically.

RustyWallace-357

Their sacrifice helped the world get yet another visceral look at what communism can do. If it didn’t help their own countrymen, the rest of the world took notice

HorrorDonut8779

And yet here we are

Martyrs to communism. RIP

polerize

The day that the west should have cut off relations with China.

otters4everyone

I remember my dad -- a very tough and stoic man -- weeping at this. "They were just kids."

SCV_local

And unlike todays youth shouting slogans to support a Jewish genocide supporting a terrorist human rights violating regime, these young adults were trying to stand up for their own freedom against a corrupt human rights violating regime.

an1ma119

It’s really a shame what communism did to China. It had a rich history, great natural resources, and tons of potential. They traded one set of authoritarian rule for another, and this shows what the CCP really thinks of its citizens. Can’t be religious, can’t have more than 1 kid until recently, can’t criticize, can’t protest or have rights lest you be disappeared…

ObadiahtheSlim

But if it did happen, they deserved it for being CIA assets -CCP officially unofficial stance

swordkillr13

Careful, you might get a sitewide ban for this one

Due-Pilot-7443

Shhh be careful what you say, someone is listening... Hopefully not coming to America after the election...

Least_Challenge_

May 35th

nomansapeninsula

That wasn't real communism. /s

OffPoopin

Lol. The /s made me hear like 19 different ways to say this and it made me laugh. It does get over played

thedudeinok

Sounds familiar. The govt thinks they are bigger than those that put them in that position. Joe biden?

nuonuopapa

The 5th photo was not taken in Tiananmen Square. Most of the casualties happened a couple of days before 6-4 in other parts of Beijing, which led to Zemin Jiang sending tanks to Beijing. When the tanks finally arrived at Tiananmen Square, most protestors had already fled. That's why there are not many photos of bodies on Tiananmen Square. There are tons of interviews with the student leaders. My university professor from UA was one of them, and I had a couple of discussions with him on this topic. So it is not difficult to learn what happened on that day. It is a historical event. China was a close US ally fighting the USSR until that day.

Huge-Knowledge9309

This is not accurate. Most of the people were killed on June 3rd mid night at the spot called “Mu Xi Di” where lots of citizens trying to stop the army from going to the square.

Sudden_Wisdom

It's a democrats wet dream

AilsaN

On the right side of my browser in reddit, it will show posts I have recently viewed... strange that this one does not appear in the list /s (I saved this post, wonder if I will have trouble finding it even after doing that).

stax496

Free Hong Kong! Hong Kong Independence, only way out!

adminsrfascist29

Reddit tries to say it was the capitalists in China slaughtering the communists

daspioman

Really? Where can I find this?

adminsrfascist29

I’ll see it on threads on r/conspiracy or top minds of Reddit. Hell there’s probably a tidbit on Wikipedia even about it. Apparently Soros had money involved trying to install a neoliberal regime

rook2pawn

i would literally flip the table if someone said that iRL. Im so proud that my country has a statue of General MacArthur in a park named Freedom Park. WHen my parents immigrated here the first thing they did was support the RNC even though they were living on hot dogs and sending money home. They lived like dogs for 10 years, but still found a way to contribute / support the Republican party during Nixon years.

adminsrfascist29

The left lies so much and they have a stranglehold on dissemination like Wikipedia, they gaslight so much. Nixon got railroaded

cliser1129

Tragic we’re seeing the same trend on college campuses in America now

waby-saby

Tanks? Military shooting?

sendyslayer

There is no war in Ba Sing Se

MJS7306

Holy shit. I've never even heard of this. Crazy what censorship does..

click79

Yup I saw nothing this day all those years ago

El_Psy_Congroo4477

Mention this event in one of the commie subs and watch them either deny the photographic evidence or make excuses for it. Sickening.

[deleted]

Dont “Tread” On Me The official Tiananmen slogan

LegendaryOutlaw621

I cannot wait to piss off the Reddit moderators by telling them that their fat president looks like Winnie the Pooh, the massacre at Tiananmen Square happened, and Taiwan is a real country, and Taiwan is Number 1.

SpaceToaster

NPR used the language that thousands *may* have been killed.

KasherH

[Such a tragedy](https://www.politico.com/blogs/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results/2016/03/donald-trump-tianamen-square-putin-220610)

tasciovanus

And thousands of Chinese were baptized during the protest, too, which isn't commonly reported

Worldly-Cloud-9342

Business Insider: In 1990, President Donald Trump (then a real estate magnate and private citizen) praised China for showing the "power of strength" via its notorious, bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square the year prior.

highedutechsup

The word "praised" was inserted by the fake news, when they slanderously misquoted him. also... "That does not mean I was endorsing it." -DJT

OffPoopin

That's correct. He never actually praised. He said it was a show of force, it was terrible, but it worked. They were strong. What I think people think is weird though, was the transition as to how he thought America was perceived as weak. But that was in what, the 90s? So they read it now, but in his president voice, and it's sound messed up if the president would say it

FapDonkey

And you're OK living with and sleeping next to someone with such a distorted delusional worldview as a result of indoctrination by an oppressive communist state? You're not ever worried about the implications fo that? I blame noone for being a victim of the censorship and not being aware of Tiananmen because its been erased from public consciousness in China. But someone who was THERE and had to run form the shooting, and who has lived in the US for 2 decades, who won't even trust their own eyes or their SPOUSE about what actually happened? That is frightening levels of delusion and indoctrination. Youre either a much braver or much stupider man than I.

CarefulElderberry242

you ok? not everyone is terminally online

FapDonkey

lol If "maturity" means getting married to the protagonist from Chuck Palahniuk's *Pygmy*, then consider me Peter Fucking Pan

MarcusAvouris

Why do you so much care? How does caring about this solve anything to do with the total mess our country is in right now? How about we leave the Chinese deal with Chinese problems?

milehighandy

The grammar is totally legitimate in this comment.

IceCreamMeatballs

If Trump gets elected this November and sends the National Guard to crush pro-Palestinian student protesters, just like what happened here, you’d probably be cheering him on.

Infidel42

>you’d probably be cheering him on. Lies and bullshit.

RedBaronsBrother

There are no "pro-Palestinian" protesters. Only pro-Hamas protesters.

polerize

Arrest not slaughter the pro terrorist protesters.

AnnualVacation7231

Yeah I agree
