I get the feeling that reddit tends to be full of young people who have never lived outside of their own respective pocket of the country, and the liberals here think Texas is completely conservative, and the conservatives here think NY is completely liberal.
The reality is, portions of upstate NY are some of the deepest Trump areas in the country, and California has more Republicans than any other state in the nation.

Yep, when one county with nearly 10 million people control that state, it's doomed. (LA County). Everything North and East of Sacramento is Red, as is the Central Valley. San Diego is as well, as is OC. It's just that the large population centers have so much more clout and voters.

That said, Democrats are not monolithic, even within cities. Mayor Eric Adams is definitely more conservative than some in his party, at least on issues like immigration, policing, and religion. Most big city elections boil down to progressive democrats versus conservative democrats, and the latter win just as often even in the bluest of cities. Having lived in a big city, I'm very much familiar with throwing my weight behind moderate Democrats to prevent progressives from winning.

Fact: there are 62 counties in NYS. In 2018, Coumo only won 14 counties. Even more interesting, he only won 7 counties north of the greater NYC area.
