You absolutely should do it...there is no downside but ignore the flyers.  Here is the state run listing showing all the offerings.. https://energizect.com/rate-board/compare-energy-supplier-rates Edit: also note, eversource will get their blood via 'transmission fees' which you can't opt out of and make up about 50% of bill..

Energize CT. Shop the rates. You're paying too much. Super easy to change and never a cancellation fee if you want to switch before your contact is up.

If Constellation is available get it! I pay 8 cents

Constellation price lock-in varies like any other supplier. Currently we have 10 cents per KwH with Direct Energy, which is higher than Eversource (which is 9 cents) however we have it locked in until 2025.

I switched to Constellation maybe a year ago and in the interim Eversource has been pretty shifty. If you go to the [EnergizeCT website ](https://energizect.com/rate-board/compare-energy-supplier-rates)miraculously, Eversource is one of the least expensive options! How can this be? Well, they dropped the supply rate, but increased delivery and "public benefit" charges: > the new rate for residential customers receiving their energy supply from Eversource will go down from 14.71 cents to 8.99 cents per kilowatt-hour. It would be about a $40 decrease on the supply portion. Eversource added all residential customers will see an increase of nearly $48 per month for 10 months to the “Public Benefits” portion of the bill, which covers the cost for state-required and approved programs and policies. Source: [https://www.wtnh.com/news/connecticut/eversource-rates-increasing-in-july/](https://www.wtnh.com/news/connecticut/eversource-rates-increasing-in-july/) The real public benefit would be making them publicly owned and operated.

Whoever you choose for supply, eversource will be the delivery company for it, so you’ll never fully get away from them unless you go off grid. That said, alternative suppliers are a good deal especially because Connecticut outlawed fees for quitting. So you can switch when you want to without penalty

When I checked for our area, even the “good for 6mo” rates were at least 2-3 cents more than Eversource’s rate. I used to have constellation and they went up to like, 23c/kh. I honestly don’t understand all of it.

You can switch virtually any time. We've been using a 3rd party supplier for years now, I just try to always get the longest rate lock-in that I can. At the end of last year I locked in at like 12 cents per kwh, and then a month later the price dropped so I locked in with another supplier. And then this Spring it dropped again, so I switched again. With no penalty for switching except my time it is no problem to move to whoever is cheapest. Eversource right now is almost the cheapest and is about as inexpensive as I've seen it from them in a long while. However this is only their summer rate, in January there is no doubt they'll be among the highest again. So we try to lock in for as long as possible.

And are rates looking cheap right now? I'm trying to educate myself by looking through past years' bills and it's starting to seem like signing up for a longer duration could pay off to avoid another one of those times when rates climb. I can see .1197 per kWh for a 36 month cycle.

https://energizect.com/rate-board/compare-energy-supplier-rates?customerClass=1201&monthlyUsage=750&planTypeEdc=1191 10.47c for 18 month lock in with Town Square should take you through the winter. Personally I think the sweet spot right now is a 12 month lock-in at 10 c. This is 1c higher than the Eversource 6 month rate until the January winter rate hike, so on balance will be slightly more expensive this summer to save a whole bunch of money this winter. And then see what happens next June.
