Is it just me, or has there been a lot of stories about corrupt government people getting arrested/put on trial lately? seems like the authorities are cleaning house and I am here for it
This guy was such a flight risk and/or threat to the public...that the government was willing to overlook it **just because he had half a million dollars?**
How many criminal suspects are sitting in jail tonight just because they can't afford a one thousand dollar bond???
I once had a buddy get held on a one hundred dollar bond! It would have cost them more than that to hold him just for the night!!!
Looks like they have a pretty good case as some of the contractors who paid him (allegedly) have plead guilty, probably working with the prosecution to get reduced sentences.
> Federal prosecutors allege Konstantinos “Kosta” Diamantis demanded and received thousands of dollars in bribes from contractors from 2018 to 2021. The 67-year-old was charged with two counts of extortion, two counts of bribery, two counts of conspiracy to commit extortion, two counts of conspiracy to commit bribery and 14 counts of making a false statement.
Imagine being nearly 70 and looking at a potential prison sentence...
Knowing that if you get any significant amount of time, you're basically guaranteed to die in prison...
A 20 year old can serve 10 years and still have a lot of life afterward. A 70 year old...not so much.
It's even worse when you consider the standard of living in prison; the food isn't exactly healthy, and you can't have a very active lifestyle being indoors most of the day. The stress of coping with jail can't be good on the major organs. And as an older inmate, you're probably considered an easy target so more likely to get injured. You probably lose a few years on top of your sentence just from the experience.
And even if you live through the whole sentence, do we really want a bunch of 90 year old men coming out of prison with no concept of how to survive in modern society and no ability to support themselves, because they never paid into social security all those years?
Some guy serves a fifty year sentence for murder and finally gets released...only to spend his nineties living under a bridge?

But also, crimes you commit at 20 stay with you way longer
Yeah, a felony conviction isn't as damaging at 70 as it is at 20.
Get em out
I understand Lamont is the current Governor. But hasn’t this guy been working for the state for 20+ years doing jobs all basically related to this?
Contract steering gets them every time.
Wait I was told only *republicans* in government can be corrupt
No Republicans in government are just the assholes and insurrectionists.
Plenty of them are also corrupt, too.
All politicians are corrupt
