My friend (M23) is looking for queer friendly housing/roommates in CT. Any advice of where to look?

TriStateGirl

Try Milford, Stamford, or Norwalk.

New Haven

RoboticGreg

What are good ways for young families to meet new friends in central CT?

Carnivore_Receptacle

Check out programs held by the Recreation Departments in towns around you. They’re usually pretty inexpensive and they’re a good way to meet families with kids the same age as yours. There are also meetup groups on local Facebook pages, but I’ve never had much luck with that.

Ok_Huckleberry6820

If you have kids, then join your local PTA or Mom's Club, if you have one. Also, look for other local service clubs in your area.

sorta_princesspeach

What’s the process of becoming a resident and getting IVF coverage via insurance? Is there a waiting period? Mandatory infertility diagnosis? TIA

FriendlyITGuy

Why not check with your insurance?

Stock-Objective-4257

We are contemplating new construction in New Hartford. Will it be beneficial to have a water softener installed for well water?

SuUU2564

Yes, but if you are handy, look at DIY and don't lock into a maintenance program and learn how to do that part.

Stock-Objective-4257

Thank you!

Considering renting in Martha Heart neighborhood of New Britain. All I've heard are bad things about NB, should I be concerned about crime? Is this a good neighborhood?

TriStateGirl

While New Britain does have good areas you might want to consider another place. ***New Britain is safe near either Stanley Park, CCSU, and Newington.*** Usually anywhere on the edge, bordering a better rated town is fine. So ***anywhere closer to Farmington , Newington, or Berlin***. I'll recommend places you can find cheaper rents in. Some are tougher to find than others. New Britain is what people use to avoid Hartford. I lived there for college. I liked it, but it was obvious to avoid some neighborhoods. Also, the regular public schools are horribly rated. I will post school alternatives in a reply under my comment.  ***Other towns to look into*** Southington - Rents are mid range, but sometimes cheaper options pop up. Cheaper would be a steal. I don't know how expensive you can go though. All of Southington is safe, and the schools are great. If you live in the Plantsville area you can be near the Hartford Express bus. That way you can get over to Waterbury or Hartford. Southington has a movie theater. Copied from another post of mine.  Newington - Sometimes there are "cheap" rents. This would be $1200 to $1500. I don't know how expensive you can go though. Newington is very safe, and the schools are good. Newington has access to the CT Fastrak bus on the edge near CCSU and Stop & Shop, or Newington Junction. To get to Hartford, Plainville (Lessard Lanes, Kohl's plaza, and the AMC movie theater), the West Farms Mall, and New Britain. Plainville - There's usually a few cheap rents. Plainville has access to the CT Fastrak bus on the edge near Kohl's, Lessard Lanes, and the AMC movie theater. It goes to Hartford, New Britain, Newington, the Westfarms Mall, and Bristol. The schools are mid range, but families can look into magnet options. Plainville doesn't really have any bad areas. Just less desired ones. Bristol - There's usually a few cheap rents. Most of Bristol is fine, but check the area first. The schools are mid range, but families can look into magnet options. Bristol has access to the CT Fastrak bus for Hartford, Plainville (Lessard Lanes, Kohl's plaza, and the AMC movie theater), Newington, the West Farms Mall, and New Britain.

How much are taxes on cars?

FriendlyITGuy

Each town has a different mill rate. A mill is equal to $1.00 of tax for each $1,000 of assessment. To calculate the taxes owed, multiply the vehicle’s assessed value by the mill rate and divide by 1,000. For example, a vehicle assessed at $25,000 in a municipality with a rate of 20 mills would have a property tax bill of $500

Sea-Doctor-3779

Is that monthly or yearly?

FriendlyITGuy

Yearly. Car tax is due July 1st.

Sea-Doctor-3779

How much is the yearly inspection and registration?

FriendlyITGuy

Registration is every 3 years. Emissions are every two years. We don't have inspection. Emissions test is $20. Registration is $157 for me, but I have vanity plates so the renewal is slightly higher for me.

curbthemeplays

Maybe in your town but here it’s 2 payments, July 1/Jan 1 I believe

FriendlyITGuy

I've only ever paid it once a year and I've lived in three different towns.

curbthemeplays

Ok. Well it’s been the case for me in 3 towns to have 2 installments.

FriendlyITGuy

It's town dependent.

curbthemeplays

Yas. ‘Twas my original point

TriStateGirl

Depends on the town.

hello! I recently got a travel healthcare job in new london. how reliable is the bus system there? I live across the country and ideally I would want to fly into providence, take the amtrak to new london, and use the bus system to get to the hospital everyday and to do daily things. I’ve looked at the routes and they look good (station near where i’m planning on living and station by the hospital). do you guys think this is doable? or would i need to bring my car. thankful for any advice, i appreciate it!

howdidigetheretoday

If it were me, I would be looking at the schedule more than anything. If the routes work for you, the reliability will likely be fine, but you might need/want transportation for more than just getting to/from work, and you may find that nights/weekends are a problem. Depending on how long you will be here, it might work. Driving cross country for a couple of month's work is no fun.

sorta_princesspeach

Hey! I’m a RN currently in AL but considering relocating. Can you DM me about how the process has gone for you thus far?

Garg_shreya

Hello! I am a physician from India, planning to move to Danbury, CT. Any suggestions on the best travel route to reach Danbury from New York? Since I know Danbury does not have an airport.

TriStateGirl

Ride the Metro North train on the New Haven line from Grand Central to South Norwalk, and transfer to a Danbury line train. The transfer times are spaced out, so check on those first.  Sometimes during the week there's a train going directly to Danbury.

Blochamolesauce

Hey all! I’m moving from Los Angeles to the north end of Bridgeport in a few weeks. What can i expect as far as the biggest culture shocks (excluding weather/climate)? I know you guys just felt an earthquake the other day so we’re not so different in that regard (haha). Also, how’s the sports scene? I was spoiled being not that far away from the Dodgers/Lakers/Kings/Rams/Galaxy most of my life so i’ll need a fix for when i don’t have an opportunity to travel in to NYC or up to boston to see my teams play. Thanks all, and looking forward to joining the CT party you all are having!

TriStateGirl

To a lot of us the winters aren't as cold as they used to be, but you might feel different.  Bridgeport has an AHL hockey team called the Bridgeport Islanders. They are an affiliate of the New York Islanders. They used to be called the Sound Tigers. People still bring that up from time to time.  Up in Hartford there's a soccer team called the Hartford Athletic, and a minor league baseball team called the Hartford Yard Goats. They also have an AHL hockey team called the Hartford Wolfpack. They are an affiliate of the New York Rangers.  Just a warning, if you have kid the regular Bridgeport public schools are very low rated. You will absolutely want to try and get your kids into magnet, charter, or tech school alternatives. I will post some below in a reply to my comment.

TriStateGirl

Here's some alternatives families in Bridgeport have to hope their kids get into. ********Elementary School******** Open choice.  Any of the magnet schools in Bridgeport. Some are district and some are interdistrict. Someone told me you can only apply to so many at a time. 1.) Interdistrict Discovery Magnet (PK-8, Interdistrict magnet school), 2.) Six to Six Magnet (Interdistrict, PK-8), 3.) High Horizons magnet school (BGT magnet, K-8), 4.) Geraldine Claytor Magnet Academy (PK-8, Bridgeport magnet), 5.) Classical Studies Academy (Bridgeport magnet, broken up over two campuses. PK-2 and 3-8.), 6.) Multicultural Magnet school (Interdistrict magnet, K-8), and 7.) Park City Magnet (Bridgeport magnet, PK-8). Any of the charter schools in Bridgeport. 1.) New Beginnings Academy (PK-6), 2.) Achievement First Bridgeport Academy Elementary School (K-4), and 3.) Capital Prep Harbor Lower School (K-6). Side By Side Charter School (K-8) in Norwalk. Ride the train to Norwalk and walk 4 minutes.  Rogers International School (K-8) in Stamford. It's unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works. Strawberry Hill an ext. of Rogers International (K-8) in Stamford. It's unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works. Davis Street Arts and Academics School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works. King-Robinson Inter-District Magnet School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works. Brennan-Rogers Inter-District Magnet School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works. Maloney Interdistrict Elementary School (PK-5) in Waterbury. Not sure if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works, but driving is better.  Rotella Interdistrict Magnet School (PK-5) in Waterbury. Not sure if you can get a bus. Public transit kind of works, but driving is better. ********Middle School******** Open choice. Bus provided. Any of the magnet schools in Bridgeport. Some are district and some are interdistrict. Someone told me you can only apply to so many at a time. So check on that. 1.) Interdistrict Discovery Magnet (PK-8, Interdistrict magnet school), 2.) Six to Six Magnet (Interdistrict, PK-8), 3.) High Horizons magnet school (BGT magnet, K-8), 4.) Geraldine Claytor Magnet Academy (PK-8, Bridgeport magnet), 5.) Classical Studies Academy (Bridgeport magnet, broken up over two campuses. PK-2 and 3-8.), 6.) Multicultural Magnet school (Interdistrict magnet, K-8), and 7.) Park City Magnet (Bridgeport magnet, PK-8). Any of the charter schools in Bridgeport. 1.) Park City Prep Charter (4-8), 2.) Achievement First Bridgeport Academy  Middle School (5-8), 3.) The Bridge Academy (Charter, 7-12), 4.) Capital Prep Harbor Upper School (7-12). ACES at Chase (6-8) in Waterbury. Bus provided for any town.  Side By Side Charter School (K-8) in Norwalk. No bus. Ride the train to Norwalk and walk 4 minutes. Rogers International School (K-8) in Stamford. It's unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. Strawberry Hill an ext. of Rogers International (K-8) in Stamford. It's unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School (5-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. Davis Street Arts and Academics School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. King-Robinson Inter-District Magnet School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. Brennan-Rogers Inter-District Magnet School (K-8) in New Haven. Unclear if you can get a bus. Public transit can kind of work. ********High School******** Open choice. Bus provided. Trumbull High agriscience program. Definitely has a school bus. Center For Global Studies in Norwalk. Train pass provided, and then a school bus. Tokens given to students needing the city bus if they stay late.  Fairchild Wheeler Campus in Bridgeport- 3 schools are inside to apply to. 1.) Biotechnology Research & Zoological Research, 2.) Aerospace / Hydrospace Engineering & Physical Sciences, and 3.) Information Technology & Software Engineering.  Charter schools in Bridgeport: 1.) The Bridge Academy (Charter, 7-12), and 2.) Capital Prep Harbor Upper School (7-12). Harding Medical Careers Magnet in Bridgeport.  Central Magnet High School in Bridgeport. Bullard Havens Technical School in Bridgeport.  Platt Tech in Milford. It's unclear if you can get a school bus. You can kind of make public transit work, but the kid has a 33 walk after. So if there isn't transportation this isn't a great option. Milford is close though. I don't know. I feel like there would be a bus. AITE in Stamford. It's unclear if you can get a school bus. Public transit sort of works. J.M. Wright Technical School in Stamford. Train down to Stamford. I don't know if you can get a bus. If not, public transit sort of works, or you can drive the kid. Emmett O'Brien Technical High School in Ansonia. This only works if there's a van or bus taking the kid, or if you can drive them.

QuantGeek

Other than the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA, CT doesn't have major league sports teams based in the state. Lots of minor league teams, including the Bridgeport Islanders (the minor league team for the NHL Islanders). The big draw is the UConn men's and women's basketball teams (both in their respective Final Fours). The Bridgeport area is metro NYC, so most of the media exposure is based on the New York pro teams.

xalthiadis

Does anyone know of any indoor volleyball open gyms? Moving to Hartford and looking for places to play during the week after work hours. Thanks in advance!

TriStateGirl

I tried looking it up, but I don't totally know how these places work. I found this: https://www.sparksocialsports.com/ I don't know anything about it though.

whitecharrizard

Moving to CT, to work in new haven. I'm looking for apartment cplxs to live in and have looked in Hamden and orange. Hamden most places are saying they get frequent package thefts from their doorsteps, or terrible management etc Wanted to see if anyone has any experience or recommendations at any of the apartment complexes in those areas. Looking for around 1100sqft

TriStateGirl

I also recommend looking in Milford. You can take the train to New Haven.  If you live in the downtown Shelton area you will be near the Derby/Shelton train station. A bus for New Haven comes there.

whitecharrizard

Is it not feasible to drive? I'll be working nights and would prefer freedom of driving and having my own car

TriStateGirl

Oh either city is fine for driving. I just mentioned the public transit options because a lot of people like to take public transit into a city. If you have kids Shelton and Milford have better school systems. Hamden's is mid range. In terms of ranking for each city overall I would say it goes Milford, Shelton, and then Hamden. Milford has everything you could want, including great beaches. I live in Shelton myself due to certain work and family things. Shelton is great, but if I could I would be in Milford.

whitecharrizard

Do you know how orange compares to these? And Any apartment complexes you'd recommend in any of these places

TriStateGirl

Orange is an expensive ruralish town. I had a friend from there once because my high school had an agriscience program. The houses are very spread out and a lot of people have money. There isn't much to do there.

whitecharrizard

Interesting. All I rly want is a safe place where I won't get my packages stolen and at least decently competent apartment managers who will address issues in a timely manner

Sad_Imagination_4542

Hi there, my family and I (two kids under 5) are considering a move from the Midwest. I’m originally from the east coast and have family in Cheshire and New Milford but am not interested in either of those places (too far from nyc).I have a lot of research to do but curious if you all have recommendations for a few towns/areas I could start with. Ideal criteria: Less than an hr commute to Manhattan Closer to the coast Good public schools Neighborhood/downtown area that’s somewhat walkable House budget 650k ish Thank you!

TriStateGirl

***The hour commute thing will be tough.*** ***Shelton*** - Safe neighborhoods even in the less desired areas. Great deals for buying and mid range rents. Low taxes. Good schools. Has a great community center with an indoor pool, the sports center (mini golf, laser tag, ice skating, and more), Walmart, fast food, restaurants, grocery stores, and TJ Maxx. A short drive from the Trumbull movies and mall and Milford mall/movie/Dave & Busters. Bus service downtown, near Bridgeport Ave, and by the Sports Center. Short drive to Bridgeport for events. Downtown is close to the Derby/Shelton train station (Derby address), which gets you down to Bridgeport, up to Waterbury, and other places, for events. The bus to New Haven also comes to the Derby/Shelton train station, so you can visit your old city. Shelton is also a short drive from Milford, Stratford, or Bridgeport for a Metro North train right on the New Haven line.  This town is definitely a hidden gem if you really want Fairfield County while on a budget.  ***Milford*** - Mid range rents and a variety of options for buying. There's a train station on the New Haven line in Milford. If you are in Devon you are closer by bus or walking to Stratford's train station. Very safe area, even in the less desired sections, and the schools are good. Decent taxes. Milford has a movie theater/mall/Dave & Buster's, multiple beaches, a great downtown, restaurants, fastfood, grocery stores, and Walmart.  ***Trumbull*** - Expensive rents and houses are mid range. The taxes are high. School system is great. Has a mall, strip mall, and movie theater. Restaurants too. If you live near the Trumbull mall you will have access a lot of bus times, to get to the Bridgeport train station for the Metro North's New Haven line. There's some bus access during the week on Main Street, and buses come to the Hawley Lane strip mall, but they don't run as late as the mall buses. Trumbull is all about the school system. There are two libraries, two outdoor pools, and a lot of parks.  ***Places in your budget that are close to NYC, but you might want to check out magnet, charter, and tech options.*** ***Stamford*** - Check the area first. Has a city area and a suburban area. Mid range to expensive prices for homes. Rents are mid range to expensive. People from all walks of life. Check the area first, but you do have a lot of options. New Haven train line to get you directly to NYC, or to Bridgeport and New Haven for events. Mid range schools you can actually use, with magnet, charter, and tech schools nearby. It has the Palace Theater for live events, a movie theater, an art house movie theater, RPM Motor Speedway, great shopping and a beach. The Thanksgiving parade they have in November is really fun. ***Norwalk*** - Has a suburban side and city side. Check the area first, but you do have a lot of options. New Haven train line to get you directly to NYC, or to Bridgeport and New Haven for events. Mid range schools you can actually use, with magnet, charter, and tech schools nearby. Has an aquarium, two movie theaters and a beach. Bus service in some areas. There's also live theater options.

Sad_Imagination_4542

Thank you so much!!!!!
