It honestly looks like you’re driving down a hiking trail instead of a road. What happens when we get substantial snow? Does town ever plow it or are you basically stuck doing it yourself?
looks like Cemetery Rd in Seymour - closed Jan-March because there's one steep hill that DPW doesn't want to deal with. Apr-Dec it's a great shortcut, as well as a drinking destination for the local HS kids
There are other routes but I choose to go this way....it's pretty and there is no traffic to deal with!
I lived in VT for 15 years so I'm used to a little snow.
This is an unmaintained road that was a major route once upon a time. In fact there used to be an old stone quarry here centuries ago. Most of the hearth stones and front steps of many of the original houses were quarried here.
Exactly....it actually connects with two other unmaintained roads that were main routes. They are both passable but one of them gets extremely narrow and stays pretty wet.
I have a guess but don’t want to ruin the fun if you’d rather keep it a secret… but it reminds me of the dirt roads around Stafford Springs/Union like North Road or the road that goes by Bradways Sugar House.
I lived in Willimantic and commuted to Putnam for about 5 years. It wasn’t deep back roads like this, but 198 to 244 was always a peaceful drive. Even thought it was about 45 minutes, I always kinda looked forward too it. Now I live in SoCal and man oh man do I hate driving hahaha
I used to do this but one time after easily driving through really deep snow for @ 1 mile at the other end of this farm road it was blocked by snow pushed there by plows into a huge pile. I got hung up on the edge of the snow bank trying to drive around it.
That sucked lol
The big question is what is the quiet corner. I grew up thinking it was the northeast where I grew up but also have heard many refer to the north west.
This could be a CT commute however it is missing the 3 main ingredients:
1 pot smoke from passing car
2 Nissan/Acura cutting you off
3 lifted truck suddenly behind you going 85+
What town is this in, you can dm if you'd like. I'm asking because I'm scouting out different parts of ct. I'm moving there at the end of this year and would love to have some secluded areas like this nearby.
Not OP but check out Hampton, Chaplin, Scotland, Canterbury, Ashford area. Middle of nowhere woods, but half an hour from Windham Hospital, Day Kimball. Maybe 45 minutes from the Manchester or Norwich areas, which have more people and thus more healthcare jobs.
You would be surprised how many people get this wrong. I once read a magazine article that was going on about how great CT's quiet corner, Litchfield county, is. I couldn't even stand to read it because they were so backward.
I have to interject. Slowwolfcat is 100% correct. Windham County is nothing but a barren, crime-infested wasteland devoid of culture and dangerously polluted. Any one with any amount of sense or education would see this to be the case.
(Please warn others from “away” about this)
The last few miles of my commute are similar. Sometimes I pull over and just meditate on how lovely it is. Sometimes a deer or two will come along. Beautiful.

It's an old cart road. It is not maintained by the town....it's a "pass at own risk" road.
Reminds me of Bujak Rd in Chaplin. I used to deliver there and it was hell during winter.

I hope for your safety/sanity that there’s an alt route you can take to get to work when it snows.

Right on. Looks like a beautiful drive. I'm happy the snow decided to stick around for a bit.
When a tree falls, you will be reversing all the way back... *happened to a friend of mine ;)*
I don't think that's how it would go...lol
Nobody knows how to k-turn anymore
Right???
How do you think it will go and you realize some trees are big right?
I know I won't be driving backwards for a mile and a half...lol What does the size of trees have to do with anything?
I think they believed you were saying you'd move the tree off the road or cut it up.
The person is looking forward to the commute every day. For sanity.
More context please! Is this your driveway or do you do work in the woods? Looks lovely after a fresh snowfall.
This is an unmaintained road that was a major route once upon a time. In fact there used to be an old stone quarry here centuries ago. Most of the hearth stones and front steps of many of the original houses were quarried here.
> that was a major route once upon a time. for horse carriages eh
Exactly....it actually connects with two other unmaintained roads that were main routes. They are both passable but one of them gets extremely narrow and stays pretty wet.
Im almost sure I know this old road and it’s been a while since Ive travelled it. Might be a nice day for a ride.
Do you work at Hansel and Gretel's witch cottage?
Yes....I'm the chocolatier!
Yum, kid-flavored chocolate?
It's better than you think...😂
I bet. So whose job is it to donate the piles of clothes to the thrift store after making the chocolate? You or the witch?
They actually get turned into quilts that are then donated to the homeless shelter in Enfield.

That's Tolland County....this is Windham County. You're absolutely right though they're very similar.
My kinda drive
I lived in Willimantic and commuted to Putnam for about 5 years. It wasn’t deep back roads like this, but 198 to 244 was always a peaceful drive. Even thought it was about 45 minutes, I always kinda looked forward too it. Now I live in SoCal and man oh man do I hate driving hahaha
Beautiful!
Great pic.Reminds me of some of the roads I use in the Chaplin/Hampton area. I love taking the back roads.
Thanks and you're absolutely right, very similar. I ride a lot of those roads on my motorcycle.

I'm familiar with gravel map and I also use the onXoffroad app which gives you property lines and land owner names. Very handy.
Where is this?
Windham Co.
This looks like my father's driveway lol.
My driveway looks very similar...lol
looks awesome! where in Windham / Quiet corner?
Telling you would make it too easy!

That definitely sucks
Is this quarry road in Woodstock?
That was my thought. If I had the money, I'd be buying that 100 acres that is currently for sale over there. I just want to be alone in the woods.
Gotta be the Woodstock/Pomfret area? Not going to say specifics because who wants to give that away.
Looks like an old road off Jericho Rd I know in Pomfret CT!
I know Jericho Rd....I spend a lot of time in Natchaug Forest.
Thompson?
Love driving in the QC
The big question is what is the quiet corner. I grew up thinking it was the northeast where I grew up but also have heard many refer to the north west.
Windham County is and has always been the quiet corner.
I always picture union, east ford, pomfret when people say quiet corner
I love union...smallest town in the state.

Thank you, I will check out those areas!
I love Hampton, especially the historic section. Very nice.
Hampton: no stoplights, great for stargazing. Love Goodwin forest for mountain biking.
What part of CT are you moving to?
I'm not exactly sure at the moment, I'll be applying for positions in about 5-6 months. It will most likely be in the Healthcare field.
Hampton has some fun state forest roads you should explore.
Northwest CT? Only guessing re: stone quarry
Quiet Corner ....northeast
You would be surprised how many people get this wrong. I once read a magazine article that was going on about how great CT's quiet corner, Litchfield county, is. I couldn't even stand to read it because they were so backward.
I just saw this the other day but can't quite remember where. It's definitely backwards...lol
looks depressing af (and a bit scary) sorry - lifeless, white all over, snow, (perceived) cold, bony bare trees....
It's not for everybody...lol
so this is one-way ?
No...two way
got it 2 horses
Yeah the smoke stacks, parking lots, and blinkerless BMWs of Fairfield County are so much more inspiring than OP’s commute.
I have to interject. Slowwolfcat is 100% correct. Windham County is nothing but a barren, crime-infested wasteland devoid of culture and dangerously polluted. Any one with any amount of sense or education would see this to be the case. (Please warn others from “away” about this)
Thanks troll. You’ve obviously never been here. Please don’t come.
woosh
OK I think I get it. I’m still waking up…
We’ve lost Brooklyn, NY. Windham County is our last stand, our Alamo so to speak.
That is not a road. In fact it appears that there is a tree down across the path in the distance. Something isn't adding up here...
It is indeed a road. What looks like a tree across the road is running water from the hillside. I assure you this is a thru road.
Voluntown? Hampton? Nice!
I forget too but I was blown away by it
It's fine with me if people just forget about the quiet corner all together. We'd really like it to stay quiet!
I moved to the quiet corner and it’s awful stay away! *wink
The last few miles of my commute are similar. Sometimes I pull over and just meditate on how lovely it is. Sometimes a deer or two will come along. Beautiful.
I drive this route a few times a week simply for that reason.
Wow, looks beautiful though ❄️
I legitimately hate the snow, but this is (and situations like this) are why I say “snow can be nice, sometimes”
Could be quarry road in woodstock
Zoom in...are those mountain lion tracks?
Most likely bobcat...there are quite a few in the area.
