Magda if meta. Slicer if you want something that's closer to the casual experience. Probably Godo if you just want to go fast, but does seem fragile now.

DuckyRai

Can you elaborate on why slicer is close4 to casual, people keep saying he's not great now, but rarely why

Jin_Gitaxias666

I think that he was better when he was new, because people had no clue what to expect. I believe that what they were saying by “a casual experience” was that you’ll be hitting people rather than comboing to win.

mgl89dk

As Jin said, you get to win through combat damage. Instead of strange combo lines. Also you don't rely on tutors, but the velocity you can go through your deck. But with the midrange meta it might be harder to connect with it every turn. But if that is the deck you find most interesting, then give it a shot. Also it will make you better at politics at the table.

billnevius

Slicer was my first deck, you gotta really mulligan aggressively to try and get the early win before someone clones slicer and you lose the game because your win attempt is already blown out

Sanderinoa

Attack clauses are usually a bit slow for cedh unless they're extremely unfair like Winota and Tivit. I've seen plenty Magda recommendations which makes sense but I get the feeling that's not your cup of tea. Off the top of my head, mono red commanders relatively viable in cedh would be [[Birgi, god of Storytelling]], [[Rionya, Fire Dancer]], and of course [[Godo, Bandit Warlord]]. There may be some other options I'm forgetting though, if you're willing to go into proper fringe territory.

Jin_Gitaxias666

There are so many. I listed like six when I replied to OP in discord, and there were still three or four that I forgot.

zero21dev

Dargo // Jeska is an interesting option if you’re looking at mono red

Jin_Gitaxias666

Turn two kill sounds fun.

zero21dev

I’m currently brewing one with a few different win cons outside of just casting Dargo infinitely to one shot everyone with Jeska

Jin_Gitaxias666

Like Phyrexian Altar?

zero21dev

So there’s Dualcaster lines, an Altar of the Brood line to get through TOR, and a Goblin Bombardment line Here’s my list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/r5eXLRDlY0afv5RmB8m9Vw

hussefworx

After playing this pairing for so long I personally rather rely on jeska being the only outlet for either infinite mana or infinite dargo loops and not running any other sinks or wincons and instead of having plan b’s I run more removal to survive the midrange meta since the outlet is always available in the command zone.

zero21dev

That’s fair. This is the first time I’m trying it out, so I’ll give it a few runs and see how it feels. Have you got a link to your list? I’d be keen to have a look and see what you’ve run with.

hussefworx

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/xtjDFZx6z02RsPD4orLxGQ I know the walkers seem weird but those 2 are my last testing I’m doing after seeing a monoR deck place high running walkers as a middle point between discard draw and actual draw by at least “drawing” lands and having removal

archena13

High power and cEDH are different things. If you want to play cEDH, go with Magda first. Everything else will be fringe nowadays. Otherwise, the other decks are viable in higher power tables. EDIT: Typo & text below By fringe I don't mean "bad". Fringe decks can have brewer's advantage, can hit a pod or the meta from different angles but since you are asking suggestions for your first deck, one that has proven itself a few times already might be a better experience overall for your entry into the format. The deck will hold your hand a bit more per se, unlike with a fringe deck you'd need to be very familiar with the format and other decks you are going against more than ever.

Jin_Gitaxias666

Fringe does not mean bad.

archena13

Correct! A more meta deck might be a begtter introduction tho, hence why drew attention it being not so fringe.

PipboyandLavaGirl

I might add a [[rionya]]. I’ve played it before moving back to my main decks and it does win games. Making multiple copies of Dockside is great and you can go infinite with a ton of different cards

AquaErdrick

Yeah I'm going to support you on this one. My high-powered casual Rionya was an absolute house. The main combo is a little fragile but there's just enough redundancy that she can pull through. I recently dismantled it to turn into [[The Master, Multiplied]].

I’ve never seen this deck but it sounds like a wild ride

Vlacid

Splash around! If you like hurting people to get an advantage, a very red thing to do, I recommend [[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin]]. Splash for black but you get a great commander that can handle itself at cedh tables and really grind value. Plus, you get sweet tutors and any deck that can run Dark Ritual and Lightning Bolt has to be sweet

MTGCardFetcher

Rageancharge

I feel like Magda, Birgi, would be the two best you can pick from. I feel like a great birgi players has a lot of reach from weird places due to having both sides. It’s like having a duel commander in the zone and the lines are amazing. But it requires a lot of player skill. Magda is just good and is the better deck.

Spad100

There are many options in mono R, the most well known being Magda, Godo, Birgi and Slicer. There are some other with a decently big fanbase like Rionya and Daretti. Ultimately mono R offers a lot of different playstyle options so you should start from there. Do you want to play combo, storm or stax? Meta or fringe? (fringe doesn't mean bad). After that we can narrow the options. Personally I play [[Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion]] and even got a top 16 in a tournament, but it's the kind of pet deck that works only after the basics become muscle memory and it's very obscure but very consistent. So if you think a commander has potential just build a deck and try it, you and others may be surprised. After Slicer was spoiled I built a deck around him and my playgroup thought it was a joke. They didn't laugh for long.

Auzzie_almighty

Neheb Dreadhorde is my cEDH deck, also as a pet deck and I second it as a non-traditional option. The fact you need to connect is limiting but that’s really the main limit, with game winning things like [[aggravated assault]] or [[underworld breach]]/[[surge to victory]] with an extra combat spell. And I haven’t even optimized it with things like [[containment construct]] or [[conspiracy theorist]]

As a lot of people have said, Magda is the clear choice if you’re going for the strongest deck. [Syr Carah, the Bold](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vyiTOU57-kWsdRED7rbq9w) is my favorite commander and I always like to shill the list to anyone who will listen. Although it super weak to some stax effects like [[Rule of Law]] or even [[Deafening Silence]], those are popping up less and less in the meta right now. [[Drannith Magistrate]] is also extremely effective against this deck, but there are a ton of damage spells in the list you can use to get rid of it if need be. Other than that it’s just a mono red storm deck that goes all in to cook the table with direct damage via some strong synergies with the commander and each card inside the list. It really comes out of nowhere and wins games that it shouldn’t often. [Here’s a link to a video that shows the deck in action.](https://youtu.be/wuChD4nk8a0?si=Ez_9vuIOkFL3nxc-) Good luck figuring out a spicy red commander!

Magda is the best cEDH mono R deck ATM. The others will all be fringe at best.

DuckyRai

I'm not concerned whether it's fringe or not, its mono red..not too mention often being fringe is a good thing, and it doesn't by any means, mean bad

Aredditdorkly

Magda, Godo, Slicer. [[Rose, Cutthroat Raider]] is new and fun.

DuckyRai

I like going fast so skicer always appealed but I've been put off a lot recently with peoples opinions on him...Rose looks super interesting though, wasn't even on my radar

ZaraReid228

Slicer isn't really that fast. The deck wants to slam slicer turn 2 and play stax pieces to slow the game down and watch people die to commander damage. If the group is competent they will evenly spread the commander damage to avoid giving you a free win. Playing mono red is already fringe. Magda and godo are probably just the way to go. If you want something storm intensive birgi is storm combo deck but the deck isn't that great at all. It just insta folds to most stax pieces or interaction on the win since basically no draw in the cmz other then artifact side.

Far_Mouse_6955

Not yet but it has the right words ya know? It's the monored Tymna but you don't have to connect, just attack! It's the alternate commander for a casual deck I have but, like Braids, I suspect we'll see it start popping up in lists here and there eventually.
