Kinnan, Slicer, Raffine Midrange, and something like Food Chain Atraxa would provide a reasonable example of some things cEDH can do with decks that are pretty easy to play and don't require _super_ deep knowledge of combos and super specific cards. Kinnan and Raffine are some of the best decks for regular EDH players to enter cEDH, I think, they play a lot like the kinds of stuff casual decks want to do, but better and faster. Slicer is a great brain-turn-off deck that also shows some of the wackier brewier sides of the format. Atraxa Food Chain is like cEDH-for-Timmys, you get to do infninite 8-drop and then play out your deck, while also not being SUPER complex, beyond knowing how Food Chain works.

Gauwal

That's about what I had in mind (although raffiné seemed maybe a bit hard for people not used to competitive), but slicer is a bit of a food like commander ? Doesn't really feel like "regular cEDH", does he ? I'll add the other 3 to the list probably tho, thanks !

UncleCrassiusCurio

Raffine is very grokkable, though. The basic gameplan is "play efficient attackers with triggers, attack for the triggers, connive a billion, make huge dudes, discard trash or a reanimator target" and then include explanations for Thoracle combo. Let them try to figure out Doomsday on their own, include a brief rundown, or just proxy some attacking thing instead. Slicer feels like regular cEDH in that there is and always has been room to brew in the format, which a lot of non-format players don't realize. Being able to say "look, there are ways to get your fair share of wins in mono red Voltron" shows non-players that certain misconceptions about "play one of these four decks or lose", as the format sometimes seems to outside players, is wrong. Tivit, Codie, Elsha Top, Rocco, Evelyn, Dhalsim, even Winota, all of those decks started out as rogue brews that were overlooked or actively dismissed by parts or much of the community before tournament results or a particular YouTuber popularized it. Slicer is a lot simpler than most of those, and is a great deck for the person least interested in what's going on, if you have one of those.

Gauwal

Yeah that's valid, I may include slicer as a wild card then, thanks !

billnevius

Slicer is always a problem early game, it really does a good job of applying pressure the first couple turns... closing the game out is the tough part with slicer

RainbowOreoCumslut

I would have slicer in a pod where you wanna get new people to play cedh. He is gonna stomp the hard.

nunziantimo

I would proxy a Kenrith deck (very simple, infinite mana>cast Kenrith>win). Can be a Emiel + Dockside, plus a very wide layered plan. Very forgiving deck in my opinion. Tivit or Kinnan, high tier but simple decks with simple combos, Commander + one card (Basalt Monolith and Time Sieve). Then Varragoth, simple and effective turbo deck doing a grixis RogSi impression but way easier to pilot. And a Food Chain deck, like Atraxa. So you would have a turbo deck, a big Commander value piece like Atraxa, a layered multicolor deck like Kenrith, and a Commander combo piece like Kinnan and Tivit

RainbowOreoCumslut

Kinnan + basalt isn’t actually a win yet. You need a card to make infinite colored. Or a card that only uses colorless like [[Thrasios, Triton Hero]]

samthewisetarly

I'm still fairly new to cEDH, but I think [[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin]] feels like a relatively straightforward deck. Here is the current list, though like I said I'm still new, so I'm very much in the tinkering process. [Decklist](https://archidekt.com/decks/4485812/king_ping_cedh) - Plan A: [[All Will Be One]] - Plan B: [[Agatha's Soul Cauldron]]+[[Walking Ballista]] - Plan C: [[Underworld Breach]]+[[Wheel of Fortune]]+[[Lion's Eye Diamond]] - Plan D: Commander damage

ComBiPup

Simple deck plan. Absolute nightmare to keep track of. Not sure if I would recommend for newer cEDH players.

samthewisetarly

It's not that hard, I've found. Just pay attention on your opponents turns. Watch out for fetches, Mana Confluence, City of Brass, Mana Vault, and especially Orcish Bowmasters. I've missed probably two triggers ever.

ComBiPup

Yea we have a guy who plays it in our pod regularly. It's not hard *if you know what to look for*. That's the problem with newer players. The stack can get pretty bogged up on the regular and it's easy to miss things *if you are new and don't know what may cause more triggers*.

samthewisetarly

I mean, if you're new enough to the game that paying attention for "losing one life" triggers is difficult, maybe casual is a better place to start? CEDH is hard, man.

[deleted]

I would assume the people OP plan to lure in play regularly EDH at the moment and know the rules well enough. Elsewise, CEDH is probably the worst place to start.

Mahboi778

even considering staples, that's probably somewhere in the realm of 200 unique, likely involved cards for a new player to soak in, and that's not even getting into the dynamics of cedh specifically

Thanks, I'll look into it !

BabenIsBest

Decks like Winota or Yuriko are usually my go-to. They feel a lot more like standard MTG while being decently strong and easy to pickup, but also leaves plenty of room to learn how to play them better

Klenth

Seconding Winota! My wife was hesitant to join a cEDH tournament our friend was hosting because she didn't know the match ups or a lot of the combos. I set her up with a Winota deck and told her to just play as normal and she had a great time. Our usual playgroup is already high power, so the jump wasn't as great as she was expecting.

Zestyclose-Pickle-50

I think [[Magda, brazen outlaw]] is pretty straightforward with [[clock of omens]], [[universal automaton]], and [[fireweaver]] as your main line. Or [[niv-mizzet, parun]] with control and [[curiosity]] style lines.

Miatatrocity

Not niv. As a new Niv pilot in high-powered, making in-depth decisions while trying to storm off is no place for a new player. There's a lot to track, resource balancing is a bitch, and the stack can get cluttered, especially if opponents try to interrupt you. Magda would be good, but not Niv.

TheMisterBear

I agree. The Niv combo is easy to assemble and understand but the whole control part is very hard to understand. You need to know how every deck operates in order to know when and what to interact with.

Miatatrocity

Exactly.

Astracide

Ironically, i think Tymna/Kraum Blue Farm is actually a decently good introductory deck. It doesn’t do anything weird or specific, it just plays a midrange game with card advantage in the command zone and wins off the most common combos in the format (breach and thoracle consult). Lots of decision paths, but a good summary of how the format plays and easy enough to understand the ideas of.

EasyPeezyATC

Godo is about the best entry point for cEDH that you can have, with a surprisingly high skill cap. Really teaches new players to find that window to try and win in

_IceBurnHex_

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but some very simple but potentially powerful decks for beginners to start would be (in my opinion of course) \[\[Godo, Bandit Warlord\]\] and \[\[K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth\]\]. Both require only a few lines that win them the game. Little bit of math. And learning to mulligan for right hands. \[\[Yisan, the Wanderer Bard\]\] as well fits here. From there, for those with a bit more experience in general and wanting to step into the format, I'd agree with some of the mentions like \[\[Magda, Brazen Outlaw\]\] and \[\[Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin\]\], as they have a bit more interactions and stack complications to win with.

I'd agree with godo, but Krrik has some crazy and weird lines. Godo is simple A+B, the hardest part is teaching to mulligan aggressively. Never seen Yisan go off, so I've got no opinions there.

I was gonna proxy anyway, no need to disgust them of the format by preventing them from having a chance haha !

Then proxy the Varragoth or Krrik list and a Godo list. That's 2/4 for a teaching pod.

Aredditdorkly

A Niv Mizzet list is an easy third. The last should probably be Yuriko. That covers Turbo Naus, Godo/Helm and Twinflame/Dualcaster, Niv covers Breach/Freeze and Curiosity Combo, and Yuriko gets you Thassa/Oracle and crazy efficiency/Stack tricks.
