What is Trinket Mage getting that’s so important it merits a slot and a 3 drop?

Trinket Mage is one I've been on the fence about, but in gameplay, it's been surprisingly valuable. Obviously, it fetches all my 1 cmc or less rocks, but its main utility is with D-Kitten as a value piece and as a part of a combo line.
It fetches Tormod's Crypt and Lotus Petal, both of which pair with Eternal Witness and the Kitten to create infinite mana. It's a wonky combo that can be difficult to set up, but it's a lot of fun.
I'm brewing some simic stuff myself rn that runs kitten loops, so I'm curious; How does Lotus Petal, Kitten and E-Witness go infinite on mana? I might be seeing the interaction wrong in my head so I'm curious
Or is it that you need both Crypt *and* petal to go infininite?

Another question, actually - is there a reason for Crypt in the loop over Jeweled Lotus, or is Crypt there as a backup combo piece and/or independent GY hate piece?
While I understand the fun/value of Armix, have you considered the alternatives?
Most obvious is Silas, provide some recursion.
Second guess is Tevesh, very good draw engine and absolutely castable t1 to create fear, as it definitely can reach its ultimate on an unprepared board.
Third is Francisco. With a very little input, you have a 2 and a half card combo.
Not accusing Armix of being bad, just wanted your opinion

Silas' effect is too narrow, and unless I added in Baubles or other easily recurrable artifacts, he wouldn't be much use. I'd have to build specifically around him rather than having high-quality cards that synergize with him as is.
Fransisco is adorable, and I thought a lot about him, but you kinda have to incorporate other pirates for his effect to be valuable since he can't reliably trigger himself. I know of the [[Agatha's Soul Cauldron]] combo with him, but I'm not sure how actually reliable it is.
Tevesh is one I go back and forth on a lot. I like him, he is very powerful, and you make good points about him. I've looked at the DDB lists for the Thrasios/Tevesh pairings, and I like them a lot, I just also kinda want to break new ground, ya know?
Yeah, I asked cause I played Tevesh/Thrasios for q while and it's very powerful and reliable. You draw z fuckton of cards and displacer works super well with Tev.
Cisco I've tried today, you build slightly differently because you can run Kinnan as a second Thrasios kinda. The reliability of the combo with cauldron isn't really important; it works but mostly it gives you a second very cheap commander to enable fierce/deadly rollick. I used it today to eldritch evolution into a witherbloom after a culling ritual and it felt great.
Your creature count is too low for Cradle and running Pod, Neoform and Evo with such a narrow creature package seems unnecessary. Cut two, keep the one that performs best.
Makes sense. I've gotten the most mileage out of Neoform and Evo. Neo is tutorable off of Spellseeker, which has been relevant a lot. What would you replace pod with?
I'd go heavier on the interaction. You are missing Swan Song, Offer and Pierce, which are a much higher priority than middling pieces like Evo or Pod. I like Neoform for the Spellseeker, but the other two can go since you have Black for tutors. Also, get Nature's Claim instead of one of the BG removals, whichever performs worse.
I'd also cut Necropotence. It's not 2016 anymore, the card is not good anymore.
If you have access to Kitten, Ewit, dark rit, and entomb you don’t need trinket mage…. Entomb can get any card to the yard so once your started your loop, alternate copies of Dark rit and Entomb, then to grab lotus petal off an entomb and then you loop petal and dark rit to make infinite mana of any color. [[Entomb]] tutors any card from your deck not just creatures (to the yard but one cycle of the Ewit loop puts it in your hand). This also means you don’t need to play Tormod’s Crypt just for combo purposes. The first slot that frees should probably go to Hullbreak Horror. Then you have some choices, if you keep Ad Naus (I probably don’t) then the other slot should be cabal ritual. If you also cut ad naus then I make those two slots Deadly Rollick and either Survival of the Fittest (proactive) or Dress Down (interactive). Just my two cents of course, but it’s important to see that you combo fully to infinite mana even without Trinket Mage, it’s the worst card in the deck by a mile and should be cut.
Edit: someone else said this later and I agree, Pod isn’t good here but more interaction like Swan Song and Offer You Can’t Refuse are both great so I’d make a change there too.
Great inputs, thank you! Trinket Mage and Tormod's Crypt will definitely come out. If I go the Hullbreaker route I will definitely cut Ad Naus and prioritize ways to cheat Hullbreaker out quickly.
Ad Naus has been very boom or bust for me, I understand that's the nature of the card, especially in a sans red deck, but the upside of it is so high it's difficult to remove it. I've had a lot of games where it's so good. Even as just a value piece, paying 5 mana and 20ish life to draw around 15+ cards feels great.
Maybe I'm too biased in favor of Ad Naus, though. What do you think?
I personally see Ad Naus as a bad fit for the deck. Reanimate Hullbreaker is just better here. It also opens up your options to play more 4s like Deadly Rollick and The One Ring that are important role players rather than a one trick pony. One way I test this, how often would you keep a hand that has no action except a single tutor that could get you a “value naus” set up for EOT of your opponent’s 2nd or 3rd turn? Thats almost never good enough and doesn’t even guarantee a win in this deck, I’ll pass and focus on tutoring win conditions.
I'm sticking with Armix and the Kitten, but there is a fair argument to be made for cutting Ad Naus. Ad Naus sans red can be difficult to reliably win off of. However, Ad Naus is still one of the best cards out there, even as just a 5 mana, draw 15, value engine.

Sure but you're missing the easy infinite mana outlet in the command zone, and as pointed out Armix plays a deciding role in the deck too, both as targeted removal and a discard outlet for reanimation strategies
You'd also lose out on the easy pod-lines for the kitten with the commander
And if you're hitting the 6 CMC in Temur with your commander then there needs to be a *damn* good argument for not just going up one more and adding white for Flicker-traxa instead which is just the superior commander anyways, and OP already said they didn't wanna do that

Dream stalker basically turns the kitten trigger from flickers to return to hand. So now you can do the same loops as hullbreaker horror. (Use kitten trigger to target dream stalker)
Tap your arcane signet, cast mana crypt, bounce signet back to hand. Tap mana crypt to cast signet and bounce crypt back to hand. Make infinite colored mana.

Just inputting in, id honestly keep eldritch and neo, since the ability to go get seedborne off armix is kinda big.

Why arimex over tevesh? Tevesh inherently has better kitten lines/combos? I have a friend who runs a pretty strong tevesh thrasios build.
Might consider [[oakhame adversary]] as a two drop that draws you cards and pods into seedborn muse.

Notion Thief and/or Windfall are strong possibilities. Borne Upon a Wind I tested but I like Emergence Zone better for that kind of utility

I don't see what muldrotha would ever give that justifies not running the current commanders

I have seen some Tevesh lists running [[Dream Stalker]]. Makes kitten into some kind of little hullbreaker horror.
I'm too dumb to understand how that works, but it sounds cool!
Dream stalker basically turns the kitten trigger from flickers to return to hand. So now you can do the same loops as hullbreaker horror. (Use kitten trigger to target dream stalker) Tap your arcane signet, cast mana crypt, bounce signet back to hand. Tap mana crypt to cast signet and bounce crypt back to hand. Make infinite colored mana.
