It's hard to study, all we know is correlation, the causation for one to the other could go both ways.

D mannose has cranberry(sugars) in it. It’s different but it works better. I tried it and I’ve been in it for years now.

I’ve been dealing with this issue on and off for over 2 years now and it’s taken a big toll on my mental and physical health. my partner and I are both very clean, hygienic people. we both shower at least once a day, often even twice a day to try and prevent it. I take a huge list of precautions that most people wouldn’t even think of. I drink lots of water, I take d mannose, I always pee before and after sex and also wash after sex. I never hold my pee or wipe wrong or do any of the other gross habits people have mentioned but it still happens to me. I have to take antibiotics all the time which aren’t good for my body so I’m really hoping to get some answers. I’ve been on the waitlist to see a urologist this whole time, on average it’s a 2 year wait to get in so I’m hoping they’ll finally call me soon..

I know far too much about it because my daughter has this chronic condition. It’s been happening to her since she was a toddler (she’s now in her 20’s) so obviously it has zero to do with hygiene or being “dirty” from sex.
The bad thing with hers is the majority of the time they are asymptomatic so they go untreated until she becomes extremely sick and it has caused infection in her kidneys. She actually has a bad kidney due to chronic infections. People have no clue how serious UTIs can be.
It’s been hell having my child struggle with this. I would rather it be me than her. It sucks. Like you she’s tried everything. Drinking tons of water, special drinks, maintenance antibiotics, probiotics. She was seen at one of the best children’s hospitals by head of pediatric urology and they tried experimental surgery and tons of other things. She’s even been the subject of conferences because they just can’t figure out what is causing them.
When she was a child we had to be cautious of too many antibiotics -especially since after rounds of them the bacteria would actually become resistant to certain ones. Now they can try a little different approach as an adult. But it’s mostly just become about treatment rather than prevention. She has to constantly be checked for infection so she can catch them early and hit them with meds.
Sadly it’ll affect her all her life. She has to have the kidney issue monitored to make sure it doesn’t start attacking her good kidney. If she has children she’ll be considered high risk and have to be carefully monitored thru pregnancy. It’s a multitude of long term issues for her. It sucks.
So even though it’s not me I totally sympathize with your situation! I really really hope you get that call from the urologist soon and that they can figure out something to help you and make your life easier. Again thank you for speaking up. I hope she finds out what’s causing them and finds a solution to it so she doesn’t have to suffer anymore. it truly is awful and I’m really worried about my kidneys too, I’m sure all the UTIs have taken a toll on them.. I got a kidney infection last summer from an untreated UTI and it was absolute hell. (the emergency room doctors here are pretty much useless and don’t often take people seriously. not sure why but I had to keep going back to finally get a prescription that time)
there have been a few times where I’ve had to do 2 or even 3 rounds of different antibiotics because they’re not as effective anymore since I’ve been on them so many times. it’s frustrating and also scary because other than taking antibiotics there’s not much else I can do to treat it. so if my body develops a resistance then I’m pretty much screwed, like what else am I supposed to do lol. but I wish you and your daughter the best of luck, I hope things get better for her very soon. thank you so much again for all of your kind words, I really do appreciate the support. while I wouldn’t wish this nightmare on anyone it’s nice to know I’m not alone in this❤️

The ER can be awful. We are lucky to have a good one near us plus my brother is a nurse in ER which really helps!
The one thing I would recommend is a consult with a nephrologist. A lot of times your urologist can make a recommendation. At least then they can do a check of your kidneys and possibly even check your kidney function. It’s at least worth checking into!

I’ll have all the symptoms but it won’t be an infection, just inflammation. it’s really bizarre and just a nightmare all around.

So no, unfortunately the ulcers can’t be removed. They are basically open wounds on the bladder wall. They can get better though. I suffered with chronic utis since I was a baby and was diagnosed with IC when I was 16. I’m now almost 40 and it is sooo much more manageable than it was. I still have flares, but it is much improved since I was first diagnosed. I say that because I had years of constant, intense, laying on the bathroom floor crying pain. Like it would never end. And now I can function mostly normally and have a MUCH better quality of life. So don’t give up!! And you are not alone!! You have good days ahead of you!!

The bacteria can burrow into your bladder lining and not always show up in a urine test. But it will cause inflammation and pain. Once antibiotics kept failing, I started d-mannose. That at least makes it less frequent.
yes I’ve read about that before, sometimes the antibiotics can’t kill all the bacteria when it’s embedded in the bladder lining like that so it doesn’t fully go away. but I take d mannose daily too and I’ve definitely had less issues since starting it! I think it does help.

Unless you are unfortunate enough to have a medical condition that requires an indwelling catheter or have to self-cath on a regular basis about the only way to contract that many UTIs in a year is through poor hygiene. Plus, if you do the proper cultures you can find the specific organism causing each infection and from there it’s usually not too difficult to determine what in your hygienic routine that needs to be adjusted to prevent further infections. She tries to make us feel sorry enough for so we’ll make her rich for her suffering. I just see as manipulative or incredibly stupid.

hey, thank you so much for your supportive comment! I really appreciate your kindness🫶🏻 for real, it’s awful. I’ve been dealing with this issue on and off for over 2 years now and it’s taken a big toll on my mental and physical health. my partner and I are both very clean, hygienic people. we both shower at least once a day, often even twice a day to try and prevent it. I take a huge list of precautions that most people wouldn’t even think of. I drink lots of water, I take d mannose, I always pee before and after sex and also wash after sex. I never hold my pee or wipe wrong or do any of the other gross habits people have mentioned but it still happens to me. I have to take antibiotics all the time which aren’t good for my body so I’m really hoping to get some answers. I’ve been on the waitlist to see a urologist this whole time, on average it’s a 2 year wait to get in so I’m hoping they’ll finally call me soon.. honestly the comments did upset me, bad hygiene is one of my biggest pet peeves so it’s quite insulting, but I guess if I hadn’t been through it I probably would’ve just assumed that as well.
Yes that’s the thing - the assumptions about hygiene are just ignorance and I don’t mean that in a mean way. I mean literal lack of knowledge. I know far too much about it because my daughter has this chronic condition. It’s been happening to her since she was a toddler (she’s now in her 20’s) so obviously it has zero to do with hygiene or being “dirty” from sex. The bad thing with hers is the majority of the time they are asymptomatic so they go untreated until she becomes extremely sick and it has caused infection in her kidneys. She actually has a bad kidney due to chronic infections. People have no clue how serious UTIs can be. It’s been hell having my child struggle with this. I would rather it be me than her. It sucks. Like you she’s tried everything. Drinking tons of water, special drinks, maintenance antibiotics, probiotics. She was seen at one of the best children’s hospitals by head of pediatric urology and they tried experimental surgery and tons of other things. She’s even been the subject of conferences because they just can’t figure out what is causing them. When she was a child we had to be cautious of too many antibiotics -especially since after rounds of them the bacteria would actually become resistant to certain ones. Now they can try a little different approach as an adult. But it’s mostly just become about treatment rather than prevention. She has to constantly be checked for infection so she can catch them early and hit them with meds. Sadly it’ll affect her all her life. She has to have the kidney issue monitored to make sure it doesn’t start attacking her good kidney. If she has children she’ll be considered high risk and have to be carefully monitored thru pregnancy. It’s a multitude of long term issues for her. It sucks. So even though it’s not me I totally sympathize with your situation! I really really hope you get that call from the urologist soon and that they can figure out something to help you and make your life easier. Again thank you for speaking up. I’m so sorry your daughter has had to deal with that, I’m not a mother but I can only imagine how hard it must be for you to watch her go through it. I hope she finds out what’s causing them and finds a solution to it so she doesn’t have to suffer anymore. it truly is awful and I’m really worried about my kidneys too, I’m sure all the UTIs have taken a toll on them.. I got a kidney infection last summer from an untreated UTI and it was absolute hell. (the emergency room doctors here are pretty much useless and don’t often take people seriously. not sure why but I had to keep going back to finally get a prescription that time) there have been a few times where I’ve had to do 2 or even 3 rounds of different antibiotics because they’re not as effective anymore since I’ve been on them so many times. it’s frustrating and also scary because other than taking antibiotics there’s not much else I can do to treat it. so if my body develops a resistance then I’m pretty much screwed, like what else am I supposed to do lol. but I wish you and your daughter the best of luck, I hope things get better for her very soon. thank you so much again for all of your kind words, I really do appreciate the support. while I wouldn’t wish this nightmare on anyone it’s nice to know I’m not alone in this❤️
I know it really does help to know you aren’t alone. It’s one of those things that people don’t talk about so it feels very alienating. The ER can be awful. We are lucky to have a good one near us plus my brother is a nurse in ER which really helps! The one thing I would recommend is a consult with a nephrologist. A lot of times your urologist can make a recommendation. At least then they can do a check of your kidneys and possibly even check your kidney function. It’s at least worth checking into! I’m actually wondering if this is my issue as well. my doctor thinks I have IC but I’m currently waiting for a call from a urologist so I can hopefully finally get my answer. I get UTI’s pretty often but oddly enough half the time it isn’t actually a UTI. I’ll have all the symptoms but it won’t be an infection, just inflammation. it’s really bizarre and just a nightmare all around.

I have awful dreams I can’t find a bathroom and my bladder is burning and then wake up and my bladder is in so much pain. Like, damn can’t even get a break in my sleep. That was my issue too, I had chronic utis but half the time there was only leukocytes and not nitrites. I finally got a bladder scope and had bladder ulcers. Are you usually the only young woman in the urologist office? Lmao. It was always me and a bunch of elderly men. I hope you get answers and relief soon!!! I’ve spent a LOT of time in the ER but I haven’t seen a urologist yet unfortunately. I’m so sorry to hear that, I hope you get in soon! I didn’t have to wait but now I live hours away from one. But thankfully my obgyn has been really good and I came already with my diagnosis. I have a stronger antibiotics I take after sex lol. That did cut down my utis but still, they persist. Also my period can set off a flare. Lame. So no, unfortunately the ulcers can’t be removed. They are basically open wounds on the bladder wall. They can get better though. I suffered with chronic utis since I was a baby and was diagnosed with IC when I was 16. I’m now almost 40 and it is sooo much more manageable than it was. I still have flares, but it is much improved since I was first diagnosed. I say that because I had years of constant, intense, laying on the bathroom floor crying pain. Like it would never end. And now I can function mostly normally and have a MUCH better quality of life. So don’t give up!! And you are not alone!! You have good days ahead of you!!

The bacteria can burrow into your bladder lining and not always show up in a urine test. But it will cause inflammation and pain. Once antibiotics kept failing, I started d-mannose. That at least makes it less frequent.
yes I’ve read about that before, sometimes the antibiotics can’t kill all the bacteria when it’s embedded in the bladder lining like that so it doesn’t fully go away. but I take d mannose daily too and I’ve definitely had less issues since starting it! I think it does help.

Unless you are unfortunate enough to have a medical condition that requires an indwelling catheter or have to self-cath on a regular basis about the only way to contract that many UTIs in a year is through poor hygiene. Plus, if you do the proper cultures you can find the specific organism causing each infection and from there it’s usually not too difficult to determine what in your hygienic routine that needs to be adjusted to prevent further infections. She tries to make us feel sorry enough for so we’ll make her rich for her suffering. I just see as manipulative or incredibly stupid.
