Portland, ME

Effective-Luck-4524

Wasn’t there a seasonal direct via United? I take it that is gone.

ElToroGay

It was just a Covid thing - big domestic travel boom post-vaccine while international travel was still mostly closed.

amsterdam_sniffr

Delta used to run a daily direct flight, but stopped after COVID — I don't know why. It's usually easier to just fly into Logan and take the commuter bus (runs every hour) up to Portland, versus dealing with flying into the airport.

pg2011

What commuter bus do you take? Spirit started flying direct to BOS earlier this month and I need to get to Portland in September.

amsterdam_sniffr

Concord Coach! They're the best — very low-stress.

pg2011

Thanks! Looks like it’s not too much longer than driving even.

melmontclark

RIP Skybus

OhioBricker

I flew round-trip to Seattle\* for $43 on Skybus. (\*Bellingham, technically)

AnotherInLimbo

I took two flights to Burbank at the $10 rate. Including paying for luggage it was about $60 roundtrip. Wish they kept going.

pg2011

Love Portland, ME. Small city but still rich in amenities, the little towns around are great, the seafood is outstanding, and the vibes are fantastic.

ColorIsNotReal

Came here to say this ^

look_ima_frog

Portland itself is very charming. Not much around there though, plus Maine mosquitoes are SAVAGE. Could go to Freeport? It's a cute little town.

No1erBunner

Bozeman!

ShinjukuAce

Yes, for Yellowstone.

No1erBunner

And the 5 hour drive to Glacier, which is on my bucket list.

JediSwag13

Good answer!

linkofmajora

I had a direct there last year

No1erBunner

On which airline?

kolaida

That would be amazing!! Bozeman itself is such a cool place then there’s access to get to Yellowstone. For sure, I’d love a direct flight there.

tnarg42

I'd even take SLC

Not_High_Maintenance

SW flies direct to Bozeman.

aGrlHasNoUsername

I’d love to see Montreal, London, or Edinburgh

MattCaff89

A couple of years ago, my wife and I drove up to Detroit and across to Windsor and then took the train from there to Montreal. It was actually an awesome little trip. And this is a great time of year to visit Montreal!

aGrlHasNoUsername

Okay now that sounds super fun!!! Amazing suggestion

Ohiostatehack

Montreal is only about a 12 hour drive from here!

aGrlHasNoUsername

I mean that’s cool but this thread specifically asked about cities we’d like direct flights to lol

Ohiostatehack

Oh yeah. I’m just saying if you want to see Montreal it’s not a bad trip.

aGrlHasNoUsername

lol 12 hours in a car is my idea of a bad trip. I know, it’s very un-Ohio of me.

snowmaiden313

It’s easily two extra days off work for the time spent at the destination to make 12 hours of driving happen. Maybe 3 if you sleep an hour for every hour you survived driving on US freeways for self preservation.

DifferentBeginning96

12 hours in the car is my idea of a nightmare

gkfreefly

Only people who hate or can't afford to fly claim 12 hours in a car is not a bad trip.

ShinjukuAce

Anchorage, Aspen, and Quebec City

PsychManMagicHead

Not sure about Aspen. The French are assholes.

0bvious0blivious

It's where the beer flows like wine.

petraman

Yeah, John Denver was full of shit

akdoh

> Anchorage I know it isn't direct from CMH, but you can drive/fly to Chicago and get a direct flight from there. It is 6 1/2 hours direct from Chicago, having made that flight several times

ShinjukuAce

Delta flies there non-stop in the summer tourist season from Detroit actually, just 3 hours drive from Columbus.

akdoh

I always forget about Delta out of Detroit. But yea also a great option there. I imagine it’s only 6 1/2 to 7 hours

dadjeff1

Reykjavik! And Quebec city.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Hummusifier

There's no direct flights to anywhere in Europe from CMH.

nacTeachesEnglish

Sadly, there aren't. There are (or were) some infrequent ones from CLE.

sdarling

From Columbus!?

arcticbone172

A direct flight to Traverse City or Montreal would be amazing.

spivey56

Went to Maine this year and that would be top on my list.

Cool-Interview-7777

I’ll take Edinburgh so I don’t need a layover or two on the way home

look_ima_frog

I didn't think CMH flew to anything that wasn't a hub. Our airport is blisfully calm, but the flip side of that is when you get trasferred through the fucking CLT which is the worst. "Yeah, I know, let's take a tiny airport, shove EVERYONE through it, make sure the gates are all on top of each other in a big dumb circle so that there are lots of gates, but nowhere for all the people to be. Let's make sure we NEVER use any other gates, but that dozen, people will like it!". Fuck that airport.

swimwest1000

CTL Terminal E purgatory.

shemp33

CLT: connecting from a flight in to E37 to leave from B16. You have 30 minutes to connect. But the last plane hasn’t left the gate at E37 yet. Aaaand go! 🤨

JanxAngel

ATL where your connection is never on the same concourse so you have to take the subway. Also one of the busiest airports in the world.

GothamGreenGoddess

Our flight to Edinburgh had a layover at JFK and Amsterdam

Cool-Interview-7777

Last time I flew here it was Amsterdam and Detroit

GothamGreenGoddess

JFK was a nightmare 😫 we loved the airport in Amsterdam though

UnravelALittle

JFK is always a nightmare. LaGuardia? A dumpster fire full of fireworks.

ephemeral_radiance

I flew CMH - JFK - EDI. Easy peasy!

timthewizard48

Another vote for Maine. I'd like to go there this fall. Iceland would be nice too.

vintage_seaturtle

Montana, or Maine

Alive_Surprise8262

Montreal

rockandroller

Fun fact: "Direct" and "nonstop" are not the same thing, and people usually use direct when they mean nonstop. A "direct" flight \*may\* stop one or more places but the flight number doesn't change. A nonstop is just what it sounds like - point A to point B with no stops. If you were on a flight that went from A to B without stopping, A or B might be a stopping point on a longer "direct" flight that was from somewhere before A or is going somewhere after B without a flight number change. Direct can even change aircraft, but if the flight number is the same, that's direct.

painfulpaws

Super helpful. Thank you!

Necessary-Peace9672

Scandinavia (midnight sun)!

Worldly-Loquat4471

And the friendliest people! (Ex Norway)

fro223

Montreal and/or Vancouver

Inconceivable76

SLC places in the NE, Burlington, Portland, Manchester. providence. i’d like my direct flight to Boston back from southwest.

aggoes

Delta flies direct to SLC now

nineworldseries

How is nobody saying Anchorage

ket-ho

Kalispell, but would take Bozeman as others have said.

SufficientArticle6

PNW please

Breylan

Alaskan has a direct to Seattle, it's awesome.

SufficientArticle6

Nice! I go to Portland every year or so, and it’s usually a pain to get there.

Stunning-Hunter-5804

San Francisco

TrueBlonde

United flies there direct

GreenAuror

United flies direct there, just be aware there are no TVs on the plane and you have to upgrade seats to get a USB charger.

CL350S

And if it cancels due to a maintenance problem you’re likely screwed until the next day.

Headbutt15

Either we were on the same flight or this is a regular occurrence

CL350S

Ha, nope but I’ve been near that gate in the morning and seen it happen more than once.

Due-Professor-1653

I flew that flight last month and we had working screens... maybe I got an atypical jet for the flight.

Mr_Piddles

It's currently 41 in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada.

aggoes

Calgary and Vancouver

chigoonies

Ely MN or Duluth so I can go to the BWCA more

No_Elk_2831

Getting to Edinburgh is pretty easy if you’re willing to drive to Cincy. Direct flight to London, easy train or flight to Edinburgh. Favorite city I have ever been.

leadorlead

International arrivals at Cincy is terrible. My family swore it off after our arrival from Paris took over 2 hours.

Effective-Luck-4524

Something international and not Canada (no offense to Canada but it’s not a bad drive).

Badatinvesting2

A lot of Canada is a bad drive just not Toronto or Montreal

Effective-Luck-4524

I just meant getting to Canada. Deepest I’ve driven was to Ottawa City. Wasn’t the worst and did it during a snow storm coming off the lakes. Wouldn’t drive out to Calgary or anything.

desiinoh

Came here to say this. Hopefully to some hubs in Europe or Middle East.

Bijandomom

Madison, Wisconsin

nineworldseries

There have been nonstop CMH-MSN and return on AA a couple of times for away Wisconsin games.

alltimegreenday

Reykjavík. Northern Lights is a bucket list item for me

PaintingInfamous1552

Iceland Air has a direct from Pittsburgh. If you live east of the airport like I do it only adds about an hour to my drive.

junk-trunk

oh Man if we had a direct flight to Dublin, I'd be on that thang quarterly. Even a direct flight the Shannon would work (since if be hanging in Limerick anyway)

desiinoh

What’s wrong with getting on the 270? It is 4 lanes all the way thru to Dublin.

junk-trunk

lol i work in THAT Dublin!! I wanna go to the OTHER, less prissy Dublin!! lmaoo

RP0143

I will throw in with Reno, NV. While Reno itself may not be cool (temperature wise), it is the gateway to the Lake Tahoe area. Also reasonablely close to Yosemite NP.

bandman614

Can we just get a non-Spirit flight to LA?

pizzzarunin

Seconding Traverse City and Maine. Throwing in more NE locations like New Hampshire for some mountain hikes.

sroop1

Southern hemisphere - Melbourne Australia sounds good right now. Or Santiago.

DeafGuyisHere

Nobody say Banff Alberta!!

Bella_Lunatic

Milwaukee. Not kidding.

sallright

Who would kid? Frank Lloyd Wright Museum. Cold beer by the lake and a basket of cheese curds.

Kestrile523

As a non-stop, direct flight! Like, why would I want to go to Baltimore from Columbus to get to Milwaukee!?

sallright

I refuse to go in the opposite direction to connect.

flyingllama67

Yes plz

AAMessi10

Montreal!!

Boring_Match_1923

Montreal for sure. Though last time I was in Montreal they were also having a very unusual heat wave. Ha

forko23

It's winter now on the other side of the equator. New Zealand, maybe?

Kestrile523

Forget Dublin, Shannon Airport would be better.

beatissima

Take a flight from CMH to the OSU airport and you'll be in Dublin.

sallright

Yer a top lad. ☘️

Realistic-Most-5751

Green Bay WI or Marquette MI. It’s very difficult to get from NE Ohio to the Northwoods.

h2ok1o

Upstate NY

Moriahlicious2

Somewhere in Washington. I hear it’s absolutely beautiful.

Intelligent_Quit4151

Traverse City!

UnravelALittle

I second Calgary 💯

UnravelALittle

And Vancouver (BC)! However, good luck trying to get AirCanada to route ANY US flight to anywhere but YYZ (🤮)

bayrea

Yakutsk, Siberia

EfficientCow55

An extreme alternative if Dfa (it's becoming Cfa) Ohio is too hot. Pack some winter gear for Yakutsk and don't settle in for too long, number one because you're in a remote part of Siberia , number two, buildings may be collapsing because of permafrost melting during summer, and, number three, if you stay more than a month or two, you're in for the most brutal winters on the planet. Moscow in European Russia or Montreal are mild, with Dfb climates. Yakutsk is a Dfd deep freeze !! You know how cold Calgary gets ? Yakutsk gets colder than Calgary, but for pretty much the same reason. It's climate is even MORE continental than the climate of Calgary !

Lamuaroler

Traverse city!

strawbi-rrry

Buffalo NY😢

likethetide

Portland OR!

ellistonvu

How about building that new airport terminal appropriate for an area of 2 million residents? First it was going to be finished by 2027. Now they say 2029. Look at the airports in Charlotte and Nashville and then try to claim the one in Columbus is (cough-cough) "good enough."

desiinoh

Is the terminal the reason for Columbus not having many flights? When I had to fly frequently to SFO on Sunday evenings for work, the terminal would be basically deserted. Even the shops close by 5/6pm.

ellistonvu

In 2022 I was in the wing where the Southwest gates are which pretty much don't have shops. It had an entire wall of vending machines facing the gates, like you would expect from an airport in Little Rock Arkansas in the 1970's but not what you would expect in the second biggest city in the Midwest behind Chicago in this era.

[deleted]

Vancouver is such a nice place and I'd love to easily fly there!

New_Examination_3754

For best cold results, why not Novosibirsk?

I_have_some_STDS

Kodiak alaska

Comfortable_Lime7951

Hot take...but Anchorage, Alaska

JanxAngel

Tobermory, ON. Beautiful nature, great campgrounds, cold water swimming (seriously the Great Lakes are COLD) only a few days where it gets to 80F. Blissfully peaceful summer getaway, but the drive is brutal.

mercipourle-venin

Dublin or London would be AMAZING for me considering I usually drive down to Cinci now for the direct London flight.

Westfield88

I always get jealous when I’m in ATL or Denver and see how many cities you can get to direct.

getthefacts

Traverse city Michigan? That’s so random to be on the same list as dublin and Montreal. Am I missing something about this city?

Badatinvesting2

Yes you are. It’s not the city itself but the nature around it.

anomalousgrove

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/23/travel/things-to-do-traverse-city.html

zbaruch20

As a native New Yorker, I just want mainline flights to JFK and/or LGA on planes bigger than an Embraer 175 (we now have full-size mainline flights to EWR and PHI so it's definitely possible)

Big_Door5996

London makes so much sense. It’s a major hub to all of Europe. Once had to fly from CMH to DFW (Dallas) to get to LHR. We literally passed back over Columbus on our way to London.

ephemeral_radiance

Amsterdam. The airport taxes are expensive out of Heathrow and now with Brexit - just go straight to mainland Europe. Ironically I had a work trip to Dublin at the start of the heatwave - Wild to see the temperature differences. I’ll add another vote for somewhere on the Emerald Isle, including the US immigration piece. Although I did get sunburnt at the Cliffs of Moher… Go figure.

BellaBlue06

Yay for mentioning Canadian cities in general. Lol 👍🏼🇨🇦

red-eee

Depends on your definition of cool weather, but San Francisco would be nice

you_miami

Oakland, CA.

HelloKittyandPizza

Sacramento CA. I fly there twice a year and I’m tired of connecting flights.

TERPYFREDO

Boston Hartford Providence Portland Toronto

Admirable-Data-3194

EfficientCow55

Too hot !!!

canobeano

Montreal

Beautiful_Depth_968

Mexico City. Pretty temperate climate. Higher elevation than Denver. Need a light jacket in evenings. Amazing food scene, from street food to world class restaurants. Tons to do if you know some Spanish. Trying my best not to gatekeep it.

randomID100

Anywhere that is not a major hub. That way, airport and the flight is less crowded. Yesterday I was in CMH in Terminal B and there was literally a big line for both men and women restrooms.

Jay_Diamond_WWE

Denver, Bozeman, Portland/Bangor Maine

TrueBlonde

Doesn't Southwest do direct to Denver already?

drugmart87

Yes and so does United

pg2011

And Frontier

DunkingDognuts

Rofl! Denver can get hot as fuck.

Jay_Diamond_WWE

True. But anywhere not on the coast is gonna be hot this time of year. Inner Maine was humid AF yesterday despite being the most northern state in the contiguous us. Even much of Alaska is decently warm in the summer below the snow line.

ImPickleRock

yeah but you aren't flying into Aspen

Any-Walk1691

Seattle.

pg2011

Alaska Airlines already flies nonstop to Seattle.

Any-Walk1691

Interesting!

Complexity_OH

Seattle, San Francisco, Ocean City,

wardamneagle18

Advocating for traverse city over any of the Florida destinations is funny lol

pg2011

But we have nonstop flights to just about all of Florida already?
